Hotshot playboy and devilishly handsome hockey winger, Declan McAvoy, is a big man on campus and I’m just the nerdy little sister of his teammate... or I was until I let it slip I had never been kissed.
With the NHL draft hanging over his head and my brother at his side—both on and off the ice—I’m afraid I’ll be stuck in the friend zone forever. The way I feel about Declan and his stormy gray eyes is anything but friendly.
He has secrets to keep and I have a story to write… If we cross the line, complicated doesn’t even begin to cover it.
He might be known as a callous player, but he’s one player I’m willing to gamble on.
Declan
This is my year to draft to the NHL and nothing can stand in my way… especially not a complication like kissing my teammate’s little sister.
Poppy is beautiful, brilliant—and off-limits.
For the first time in my life, I’ve found someone worth the risk, but she deserves better than keeping secrets and sneaking around behind her brother’s back.
On the ice I have it all figured out, but when it comes to her... I’m all out of plays.
The stakes are higher than ever... and my heart isn’t the only thing on the line. She has an article to finish, and I have a pro career to focus on.
Falling for Poppy could mean game over for both of us, but that won’t stop me from wanting to make her mine.
This book was alright for me. I said it before, but I like sport romances, even if sometimes they are for younger main characters.
Declan and Poppy were a really nice couple. Even though that it wasn't insta-love for both of them, I liked how the story was going and that it was a slow burn one. Both of them had personal struggles, but despite it them, they still wanted to give the relationship a go.
The secondary characters were pretty interesting and I presume that in the future we will have a book about Poppy's brother. It will be really really interesting to read.
Book three in the series and this callous hockey player is going to steal your heart! Declan McAvoy isn't a man of many words at least he wasn't until he meets Poppy McGuire. Declan's story has so many secrets, but the only person he's really hurting and hiding things from is himself. Can he salvage his friendships with Cole, Wolfe, Rhyes and the team? Can he make his brother proud? Can he keep his secrets and make it to the NHL? Will he let Poppy help rewrite his story? You're definitely going to want to grab a copy all these questions are answered and more. The pace was fast and fun. Each couple so far has been just a little quirky and I love how real, and relatable that makes them feel in some aspects. I really can't wait for the next book in the series. I have voluntarily left this review.
Looking for a forbidden romance with a best friend's sister with a slow angsty build up??!! Then this is definitely the book you want to grab.
This book has the forbidden romance vibe with the awkward freshman Poppy the younger sister of Ryse the teammate and best friend of Declan. You find Declan as the broody guy who seems to have the weight of the world pressing down on him. He's closed off and just wants to make it to the NHL to give his family a better life. He's definitely not looking for a relationship or even a one night stand. So when fate steps in and these two have their first meeting its not as memorable as they wished.
Poppy is a girl trying to navigate her first year at college with an overprotective brother. She just wants to make friends and get a spot on her college paper, oh and maybe finally kiss a boy. Yes her brother has made her life a bit difficult in the dating game. Chance meeting and then a chance to prove herself as a journalist she gets the big story on Declan. They both realize they have more in common than they thought and a friendship forms only to turn into more. Lies from the past and now lies from sneaking around will make this pair have a few obstacles to overcome to finding any kind of HEA.
If you're looking a slow burn at first to heat up into an inferno before the end with two people who have to fight for what they want, then I definitely recommend this book. It has that lighthearted moments when you find that first love. You follow these two characters into a journey of lies and secrets to finding each other. I voluntarily signed up for an ARC with nothing to gain other than giving my honest opinion/review.
Declan has one goal - to get drafted into the NHL so he can not only play the game he loves, but more importantly, take care of his younger brother. Then Poppy happens to him. Poppy, the journalist assigned to write a story about him and his past, the girl who seems familiar, the girl who happens to be his teammate and friend, Ryse's little sister. Sigh...things really are spiraling out of control for poor Declan, who never opens up about his feelings, his past, or anything beyond his hockey ambitions. How can he keep his secrets to himself when Poppy is making him feel things, making him want to open up and be vulnerable?
These two! I just wanted to hug poor Declan, who was suffering so much, who held so much inside and felt so alone with no one he felt comfortable enough with to bare his soul to. Thank God for Poppy who torpedoed past all his defenses. I loved their slow burn, sweet story, and am really looking forward to more hockey and Westfall U love.

Callous Player is the third book on the Westfall U Series. Books are interconnected standalone’s. Declan and Poppy’s story is probably my favorite so far. I adored Declan and Poppy is absolute perfection. From their first encounter to the end -this book had me. Poppy is just the person to shake up Declan’s world, be the rock he needs, and offer all the support that will fill his voids. This slow burn romance builds up the chemistry until Declan cranks the romance up.
Book is told thru dual first person perspective.
Declan has secrets that have been eating at his soul. As he is able to enter the NHL draft keeping those secrets under wrap is even more important.
Poppy is in her freshman year and earns a much coveted spot on the school paper. And, the opportunity to write the spotlight story on Declan. If only he would cooperate.
Poppy is an open book and Declan appreciates how refreshing she is. And, despite knowing he should stay far away from her… he cannot. The more time they spend together the deeper their feelings become.
Her brother is not only his teammate, but one of his best friends. And, he has plans to get drafted, leave, and help his family.
Poppy becomes his safe haven. And, keeper of all of his secrets. She will go to all the lengths to keep the safe.
This was just an alright read for me. I do like sports romances and I haven't read one in a while, and although I did enjoy parts of Poppy & Declans story, I never felt an overwhelming connection between the two of them.
Declan is Poppys brothers best friend and totally off limits, but one night Declan let's his guard down and tells her his burning secret. As she promises not to tell a soul, she's thinking that maybe this is the start of something and she'll be seen more than just shy and quiet little Poppy.. but Declan was so drunk he doesn't remember their conversation. Fast forward and they are now thrown together again so Poppy can write a story on Mr hotshot for the school newspaper. Declan sees this as a huge annoyance, but as he and Poppy start to get closer, he soon realizes she's the very best part of his life. If only he could make her brother realize that too.
Overall this wasn't a bad book by any means, I just didn't connect with it like I wanted to.
**I received an ARC of this book and these are my honest opinions!**
"I think of Poppy. The way her sweet lips tasted. I want more. More of her sweetness and her openness, her honesty."
When Declan McAvoy, in a moment of inebriation, whispers a secret into a beautiful stranger's ear, he never expects to see her again. When Poppy is assigned by the college paper to write Declan's story, he is horrified to realise that she's the stranger and could blow his private life wide open. Things are further complicated by their mutual attraction and the fact that Poppy McGuire is his best friend's younger sister.
This was a great story. I thoroughly enjoyed Declan's need to be with Poppy, even though he knew that he was risking his friendship with her brother, and the equilibrium of the hockey team. I loved that Poppy brought light, perspective, and hope into his life. She was caring, trustworthy and only had the best of intentions. Her brother, Ryse, was overbearingly protective of her, but she definitely knew her own mind and could look after herself. I loved how the she finally found her own tribe and how she dealt with her roommate. This story was sexy, sweet, and heartfelt.
Callous Player is a fabulous read. You are going to fall in love with Poppy and Declan from the very beginning. I love the chemistry and the kind of slow burn as Poppy and Declan get to know each other. They have more in common than you think besides hockey. Poppy is caring, compassionate and has this way about her that will get you to open up. Declan is closed off and keeps his personal life close but is there for his hockey team to count on. I love how everything unfolds in this one. Poppy and Declan are lovely together. You are just going to love how close they get and how everything unfolds. Westfall U is a fantastic hockey series that takes you heart from beginning to end. I loved every moment of this one and cannot wait for more to come.
This was another good story in this sport series. I really liked Poppy and Declan they were such a cute couple and easy to fall in love with. This is a slow burn romance done well with the added forbidden element of brothers friend. I particularly enjoyed watching them get to know each other. Declan has always been an enigma keeping his life outside hockey a secret. Poppy has a kind caring compassionate nature who manages to get him to open up to her and his friends. I liked the pace of the storyline and how the relationship unfolded it didn't feel rushed. The chemistry was hot and had those moments I look for, the secret looks and touches the waiting for them to give in. The Westfall U series and the charcters is fast becoming one of my favourite hockey series.
Declan plays hockey at Westfall University and Poppy works for the college paper. She is assigned to write about Declan for the Spotlight segment. Declan has always been closed off even with his teammates who truly don't know his backstory. Poppy is the breath of fresh air that comes into his life and makes him realize he doesn't have to be ashamed of where he came from. They do have some problems, a jealous roommate and Poppy brother is Decline best friend.
Declan and Poppy have now replaced Wolfe and Rebel and are in the second place. xD Their chemistry was just so perfect. They always had each other's best interests in mind before making a decision.
Declan the star player of the Westfall U, known player, had lots of trust issues and given to his history, it was bound to and the way Poppy helped him open up and grow as a person was stunning to read. Poppy is a journalism student who landed the opportunity to write an article on Declan when she was just a freshman. And she wanted to make the best out of it and man did she get more than what she wanted. Not only Poppy was writing an article on him which had their relationship in question, she was his team mate aka best friend's sister.
The emotions this book got out in the end was just so... I have no words to describe. I think I went through all stages of emotions.
ARC provided in exchange for an honest review. Thanks to GreysPromo and R C Stephens.
⛔️ I’m sorry, but this story is ridiculous😂😂 H didn’t recognize h THREE fucking times, okay, I might’ve let it slide for the first two times, because the first time she was in glasses and different outfit and he was drunk when they first met and the second time she didn’t have glasses had different outfit and so on… but the third time? Are you serious? How could he not recognize her, her face doesn’t transform every time they meet, only if she has done some kind of plastic surgery every time they meet but she hasn’t, she has her own unique features that he should’ve remembered and recognized her for fucks sake. I can’t read further where the main love interest doesn’t recognize his future girlfriend. Honestly, that freaked me the hell out that I can’t continue, who doesn’t recognize someone that he has met and conversed with multiple times, I just can’t get over this😂
It’s such a cute story. If I have read it as a standalone I would have given a better rating. The book is such a disconnect from the previous books in the series, for example the timeline, characters’ behaviors and even a repeated scene with different characters in it. It’s like a different author took over this book and didn’t read what happened before. I’m not even going to get started about the hockey part where the guy is a winger but it’s mentioned a couple times he’s defense. I got really confused and my head was hurting trying to make sense of all the inconsistencies.
Declan and Poppy's story is an absolute emotional roller coaster. They get thrown together and never thought they would share their secrets with each other and form kind of a friendship. Poppy wants to experience college life to the fullest but with her overprotective brother, it's kind of hard. Then Declan has his own issues and weight to bear himself. But with Poppy, he can be himself. Add to that, their undeniable chemistry and connection. However, it's not an easy journey for them. I enjoyed their story a lot.
I really wanted to like this book and it started off pretty well. Sadly it went downhill from there. I didn’t find the writing all that great and couldn’t get onboard with the two main characters. They needed to come alive on page, but they didn’t.
I think this has been my favorite Westfall U book yet. I love the brother’s best friend trope, and Declan and Poppy were so much fun to read about!
Declan and Poppy were absolutely adorable together. They were actually really unproblematic as a couple, which I liked. Even their “breakup” was handled (relatively) maturely from both of their sides, and it was nice to see them communicating like the adults that they are.
An aspect of the book that is handled exceptionally well, especially compared to similar books in the romance genre, was consent. It was always clear and almost always verbally reiterated multiple times, which is something we need to see more of in books with sexual situations.
I liked that the book was both predictable and unpredictable, in a good way. Poppy and Declan had a lot of pressure on their relationship, both externally and internally. Both had reasons for keeping their relationship a secret, although I think the threat of Poppy not being allowed to write the Spotlight on him for The Gazette should’ve been emphasized a bit more — I think she had more to risk career-wise by that coming out than Declan’s worry about his friendship with her brother, Ryse. Ryse was another external pressure that was bound to explode, but Poppy’s complicated relationship with her roommate was one that didn’t play out exactly the way I thought it would.
At the start, it seemed like Bonnie and Poppy would be friends, but that quickly turns out not to be the case. I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to remember Bonnie from any of the previous books, but felt that Ryse should’ve told Poppy anything he knew about her when he found out they’d be roommates. I think he just knew her from her hanging around the hockey players, but her whole “be nice to Poppy and then do a total 180” wasn’t totally clear. She might’ve just been being nice to try to get to Ryse.
The fact that Poppy would just leave her journal out knowing that Bonnie was likely reading it stressed me OUT. What ends up happening with that was a surprising twist, but one that I think was done very well. Poppy had no reason to be as worried about what happens later because of it like she did, because she didn’t do anything wrong.
Slight spoiler, but her being named as a temporary replacement for a position on the paper seemed kind of odd since she was a freshman, but I just kind of figured that their school newspaper was set up in a way that was a lot different from the one at the college I went to.
At times the dialogue felt a little unrealistic — not in the conversations that were being said, but more so in the way that they were being worded. It was slightly distracting at times, but not to the point where I couldn’t keep reading.
We get to see Wolfe, Rebel, Cole, Holland, and their families again, and a few of the scenes overlapped word for word with previous epilogue-type scenes in the other books, which was a really interesting way to ground readers into how the timelines overlap, and it really payed off. Ryse and Poppy (mostly) had a really nice sibling dynamic, and seeing Declan with his younger brother Logan was fun too. Declan accepting Poppy’s help regarding his brother was surprising too — not that he eventually accepted, but the speed at which he did. It could’ve been a huge blowup breakup fight, but it wasn’t, which was refreshing.
Overall, I think this was a great addition to the Westfall U universe – I’m looking forward to reading the next book, which I assume will center on Ryse and Paris. It was kind of strange that Declan’s full name is Declan McAvoy and this is a new adult/college ice hockey romance since that’s the same everything as the character Declan McAvoy in the book “Shameless King” in the Kings of Rittenhouse series by Maya Hughes, but I much prefer this Declan…he was a lot sweeter and more respectful love interest.
As with all new adult books, I recommend them for 18+ due to the sexual content.
Huge thanks to the author & Greys Promo for providing me with an early e-book to review!
I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

This is the story of Poppy and Declan. If you haven't read the first two book in this series I am now going to recommend them to you because I am loving this series very much and was super excited to get Declan and Poppy's story in my hands. Declan is a guy who carries the weight of the world on him. He is probably one of the nicest best guys you would ever meet. He is trying his hardest to be drafted in to the NHL and help our with his brother. It is the most important thing in the world to him. Not may people get to see the real him because he won't let them. He is a guy that drowns his sorrows while hiding all the shame he carries for all the lies he has build. It's a lot of pressure on one guy to keep all that close to the vest. I felt so sorry for him for this. The guys is good on the ice and he relentlessly works all the time to makes his dream a reality. One night at a bar though and he finds himself helping a girl out of a sticky situation all while still drowning his sorrows which leads him to share a lot of things with this complete stranger of a girl. The next day though he has no memory of what happened at the bar. Poppy is the girl form the bar and she knows all to well what it is to struggle and have to work really hard to get the things you want out of like and keep your place in the world as you know it. She has a dream of stepping out of her shell and become a journalist. She is tired of living in the shadow of her hockey playing brother. Her assignment turns out to be writing a story about the next great hockey sensation who just so happens to be Declan and he sees all of this as one big annoyance. But the more time they spend together the more they begin to see who Poppy really is. A girl with a big heart that is good and honest and driven and very generous. He needs that in his life, he actually more than needs he craves it and he soon finds himself opening up to Poppy as well. Will these two be able to make it since she if off limits and onw of his best friends sister? Add in family drama a hockey team, a NHL draft, some jealous roommates and a hole lost of sparks flying off the pages and you have a really great read. On that I enjoyed and loved Declan and Poppy as the main characters. It is so easy to fall in love with both of them and their amazing story. You do not want to miss it.
CALLOUS PLAYER, book #3 in the Westfall U series was another wonderful read from R.C. Stephens. A best friend's younger sister, sport romance, which drew me in from the first chapter. A slow burn romance where a friendship develops into something much deeper. These are two characters you will definitely fall in love with very easily; a hockey player who has hidden his past and desperately wants to prove to himself that he is good enough to make something of himself, and a young woman in her first year of college looking for a fresh start in life, new friends and being able to develop her journalism skills.
"I think Declan McAvoy is the sweetest and hottest guy on this campus ... I'm just the nerdy girl assigned to make him shine."
Declan McAvoy was introduced in the previous two books in this series, and he always came across as a party boy and a playboy, however there is so much more to this amazing man. Declan hides his past, his upbringing, from everyone, out of fear that he may not be accepted. Now the pressure of his secrets is starting to weigh heavily on him, especially on his hockey game, he's not the player he once was, even his personality has changed. A chance encounter is about to change his outlook on everything when he tells his secret to a stranger. Poppy McGuire had come to Westfall to follow her dream of becoming a journalist. She is an absolute breath of fresh air. She likes to blend into the background (hence the baggy clothing), she's a total open book - never shy to say what she thinks. She's also has one major problem ... an overprotective older brother, who also happens to be on the hockey team.
"I've got a lot riding on the line and sweet Poppy is a risk I shouldn't take, but one I can't walk away from, nonetheless."
CALLOUS PLAYER is a beautiful story about finding your first love and the difficulties that are experienced along the way. The more time Declan and Poppy share together, the closer they become. Nothing is easy though, as Declan knows they can't advertise their growing friendship, because it would only cause friction within the hockey team and with his friendship with Ryse. I adored how Declan was when he was with Poppy, she made him want to be a better person, she made him happy and rethink the secrets he was hiding. I loved what Declan brought out in Poppy, the shy, innocent girl hid a sexy, sassy vixen. Their friendship/relationship brings out all the feels: anxiety, calmness, peace, fun, frustration, and of course, love. There's a bit of drama involved, but nothing too drastic, all in all this story was very relatable.
My dreams have been a lot sweeter since you've been in my life."
This was such a fabulous, entertaining read. Definitely my favourite of the series, so fAr. I enjoyed catching up with the characters from the previous two books, they know how to add extra fun and give some good advice. I'm looking forward to book #4, Reckless Player ... oh please let this be Ryse's story, and hopefully a hook-up with Paris, they definitely have something going on that they're not admitting.
CALLOUS PLAYER is a wonderful addition to the Westfall U series.
Poppy is a freshman at, Westfall University, and she is there on a scholarship. She is hoping, to be a sports journalist, once she graduates. Her brother, Ryse happens, to play on the hockey team, which is a guarded secret per her instructions. Why? You may ask. Well, being the younger sister of a hockey player is, not easy. You have girls only wanting, to be your friend and, to get closer, to your brother. Then, there are the ones that don't even bother, to become your friend they just invade your space and start asking, a million questions about your sibling.
She meets, Bonnie, her roommate, she is a sophomore, and, she is so nice. When they are talking on their first couple of nights on campus, Poppy tells, Bonnie she’s never been kissed. She decides, to help her odds of being kissed and maybe more. So, she signs, her up for the, College Pro dating app. And because, Poppy is always trying, to blend in with oversized clothing. Bonnie lends her some clothes and does her hair, and makeup. The first date she is, to meet at a bar called, Black Market off campus.
And the guy's name is, Cage, but as she is looking around the bar. She isn’t seeing anyone, that looks like the picture. Except, she knows she has been catfished. Just as she is getting up, to leave once she sees he’s the guy next, to her at the bar. He’s the one, to get her text. Telling him she arrived, although he is at least, in his forties, graying, and pugy. When he has the nerve, to grab her by the arm, to tell her, to stay.
He’s asking her for a chance and she’s like, no way. Deceit doesn’t deserve second chances. He lied so nope. The drunk guy on the other side of her decides, to stand up, to confront the catfish guy. Telling him, a Westfall hockey player so, even drunk he could take him. Poppy laughed because he is, also five inches taller. He scared him off. She knew she had, to play it cool. Using only her first, name because if she were, to give her last, ‘Declan McAvoy’ would be sure, to know her brother. Then she would become, the girl with the plague. Instead, they got, to talking and, Declan entrusted him with his darkest secret.
However, the next day when he sees her in her regular clothes, and glasses instead of contacts, he has no clue who she is. The Spotlight piece is about him this year, and she’s assigned it. Ryse has agreed, to not know her, until the piece is over. So, she can get an open, and honest article piece. Then, they meet at the gym, Declan doesn't recognize her again, same at a local concert. But, now he's intrigued by her, and, her open and honest personality. Because she came from nothing, got a full-ride scholarship, and works for the extras.
This is such a full, and encompassing story. With friends who they choose, to make a family. Once the guys go pro, it means nothing if their, Westfall family, isn’t their home base. This has some very endearing moments, about his kid brother that touch your heart and your eyes.
#callousplayer by @rc_stephens_author is book three in the series.
Declan has something to prove to himself. That He is good enough, he will make something of himself and he will take care of his family. But in doing this, the stress brought him in a downwards spiral. He’s at a bar, drunk, when a girl a girl next to him needs some assistance with a guy. He helps her out, and in doing so, he lets his guard down for a second and spills some secrets. Realizing he needs to change his ways to go pro, he agrees to straighten out. Now, being the spotlight of the schools paper is definitely unwanted attention. Until the reporter is oddly familiar. He gets to know her, shares more of himself than he ever has. But can he trust her with his past? Can he trust himself with not just his heart, but someone else’s too? Or is it bound to crash, burn or leave just like everything else in his life?
Poppy is an open book. She’s never hid behind anything or anyone. But that doesn’t mean she’s not sick of being in her older brothers shadow. She wants a fresh start in college, but her brother doesn’t make it easy. She has her writing, and reporting. Now, she’s given the big spotlight assignment. Having to get to know and discuss the life of a hockey player should be easy. But with Declan, nothings easy. Can she make it work for her article? Or are the feelings she has along with the confidence he gives her enough to withstand a storm coming her way?
I honestly loved this book. I’m a total sucker for teammates sister and best friends sister. Declan was so much more than just a jock. He was more sincere and caring than I ever expected. He wanted to prove himself and show his brother what he’s accomplished. I love that Poppy was shy but strong. Her confidence built and seeing the friendships she’s formed were perfect. Can’t wait for the next book! I have a feeling I know where it’s going.. and I can’t friggin wait! Definitely recommended this read!
Poppy has always been in the shadows. Her brother plays for the Westfall Dragons, and she is just his nerdy sister. When she decides to go out on a date, she realizes it was a huge mistake. Thankfully Declan is there to help her and after some time hanging out with him and his teammate, she goes back to her dorm figuring she wouldn’t see him again. The thing is he shared a big secret with her and well she shared a secret with him as well. She will never tell anyone what he said. When she is tasked with doing the spotlight piece on Declan the more time, they spend together the closer they get. However, he is still her brother’s teammate and that makes her hands off. Problem is all he wants is her. Can they make this work or is it game over?
Poppy is just the sweetest heroine. She knows what she wants to do- journalism and hopes to become editor someday for the Gazette. She may only be a freshman but knows with a lot of hard work she can make it happen. As she realizes the feelings, she has for Declan are a lot more than friends, she has to decide if the chance is worth it. Making it all the more difficult this is the season for the Dragons, and they have high hopes of being champion of the Frozen Four. Declan has the biggest secret and he trusted Poppy to keep it. Granted he told her while they were drinking but he is hoping that it will stay under wraps. He has had one goal and that is to make the NFL Scouts notice him and get drafted. There is so much riding on that and he doesn’t want anything to derail him. I am so invested in this series. Just love catching up with the players and the former players. It is always fun to watch as the girls continue to get closer and protect each other.
Callous Player is the third book in the Westfall U series by R.C. Stephens. This new adult/best friends little sister story is an angsty yet sweet romance that burns slow yet hot that you don't want to miss. While this story is part of an interconnected series, it does hold well as a complete stand alone.
Oh dear Declan and Poppy. I really enjoyed these two together- they had this instant connection and feeling of trust for each other. At first glance you wouldn't think that they work together, Declan is a tight lipped, broody yet attractive and popular hockey player for a prestigious team/school while Poppy is by all accounts a nerd who tends to blend into the background but is also an open book.
I was very curious about Declan in the first two books of the Westfall U series- he was around but also seemed like no one really knew much about him, so I'm thrilled that he was one of the MCs in this book. The secrets that he has felt like he had to hold about his family had him crumbling with anxiety and not knowing what to do. Then enters Poppy who learns what those secrets are while also revealing one of hers before finding out she is in charge of writing the spotlight story on Declan. The more these two are forced together the more chemistry and connection they form- with just one slight problem: Poppy's protective older brother, Ryse, is one of Declan's best friends and teammates putting Poppy completely off limits.
The angst interwoven was good, the sweetness between these two in their budding relationship was fantastic. I liked how the drama with Poppy's brother played out though the drama with her roommate Bonnie was kind of eh. Overall I really liked this story and the breadcrumbs of what may be coming with Ryse and Paris has me excited to come back and spend some more time with these hockey hunks of Westfall U!
Declan McAvoy carries the weight of the world on his shoulders and doesn’t let people in too close to his world. He drowns his sorrows while hiding in shame of the lies he has built and the pressure of keeping his life close to the vest. What we see is a guy with a heart of gold that will not allow anyone to ever see it, a guy that has a goal of being drafted to help his brother and he works relentlessly to achieve that. One incident at a bar leads him to helping a girl out of a sticky situation while drowning his sorrows and he feels compelled to share with this stranger his secret, yet he can’t remember a thing about it the next day. Poppy knows what it is like to struggle and have to work hard to get to where she is at. She is determined to step out of her shell, prove herself as a journalist, and step out of the shadows of her hockey playing brother. When Poppy is assigned to write a newspaper article about the next great hockey player she sees this as a great opportunity for her and Declan sees it as something awful he will have to endure. As they spend more time together Declan starts to see the heart of Poppy, he already thought she was beautiful, but her heart was kind and generous. She held nothing back, was always honest, and Declan craved that so he started to open up to her. Throw in family drama, hockey players fighting, attraction that can’t be denied, and jealous roommates you have a great read and this had it all. I loved who Declan was, he’s true self. I loved that even if he found it difficult to open up to others Poppy made him want to be better and I loved the family that this group of friends have created because not all family is blood. Such a great read with amazing characters, group of friends, and a fall into love that can’t be stopped.
Declan McAvoy has one goal, to play well enough this season to make it to the draft and catch the eyes of NHL scouts. Which means he is going to have to keep his grades up, keep his partying to a minimum, and allow no distractions into his life. Which seems easy enough to do... that is until a beautiful, but slightly nosey, reporter comes wandering in to his world!
The pages of Callous Player come brimming with all the first time love feels and heart-squeezing emotion your heart can handle! These two come together by coincidence, but after a few interactions it's easy to see that it wasn't a coincidence at all... like maybe fate had a hand in it. Declan knew getting involved with Poppy would not only cause friction with his teammate, but every time she was near he felt a calmness he had never known. She made him want to be a better man, a man worthy of her heart, and he wanted to fight for her, even if it cost him everything. It was such a good story!!!
From beginning to end these two love birds kept me captivated, every page I turned had intriguing drama, steamy toe-curling moments, humor, and heartfelt emotion... it was a perfect late night escape! I have loved getting to meet the characters in this series, but I have to say these two totally stole the spotlight for me! They just struck a cord and have hung tight with me for the last few days... they were truly unforgettable! Highly recommend you get your hands on this one, it words are bound to warm you heart!
