Drago has now learned the secret that his Betan clan has been hiding for almost a decade. He’s currently alternating between moods of pitying his second cousin and fighter team leader, Jaxon, and wanting to strangle him.

They both have to put their feelings aside though, and concentrate on using lumbering solar array transport ships to help with the repairs of the five Earth solar arrays, because Earth is critically short of power. Fortunately, repairing solar arrays is perfectly routine work, so Drago definitely can’t get into trouble.

SO GOOD! I'm sorry, if I'm going to write an honest review I'm going to have to gush a bit.

A lot of books these days are very formulaic: Start with something to grab your attention, then enter a standard three part story focused on a single issue ending with a climactic scene and possibly an epilogue. this is not that book.

Yes, there's stuff happening - there's a problem that gets solved in a really satisfying way, but that's not what makes this great, it's not really the point of the book.

I'll try and explain - book reminded me of a really great mystery like The Hound of the Baskervilles in which you are slowly piecing together facts dropped here and there. The fun is looking at the information you have and trying to fill in the blanks. But instead of a murder (or glowing dog) when you are reading this book you are discovering an amazing universe with an epic history.

This book slowly reveals events that literally made my hairs stand on end - they would make such brilliant series in themselves.

Drawing us through these revelations is Drago, a very likable and well meaning character who you can't help rooting for. Exactly the sort of character that I miss the moment I finish the book.

If you like discovering new worlds - read this book. If you like reading about characters you care about - read this book. If you like puzzles to get your brain working - read this book. If you like utterly brilliantly written action scenes - read this book. Actually, if you've got an ounce of imagination - read this book.

... but start at the beginning, read Hera 2781, it's short and really good.

I've said it before, of all the authors writing today, Janet Edwards is my favourite.

[End of Gush]

And now the wait for the next book begins. With this author, it's always worth it.

I love science fiction/fantasy, and there are many fictional worlds I would happily inhabit. Even the Hive Mind world has a backhanded appeal - everyone is just so...fulfilled. But after reading Array, this is now my favorite alternate existence. This book fleshes out the concept of Fidelis, with the central tenet of individual and collective responsibility and guilt. Sadly, that's something that is missing in much of the real world. And it's also why I class these books as utopian rather than dystopian.

Note, I would never, ever want to live in the Scavenger world! But it gives rise to this one, which in a way, gives hope for humanity.

Too much? How about this - it's a fun read. And I really, really want to know what Drago learned at the Tell Clan coming of age ceremony. Enjoy!

The very best

I loved hearing about the Tell clans history. All those little tidbits just make this world more real. But this one didn't end off on a cliffhanger. So now I wonder what secrets will be revealed in Sol 2782.

Spoiler questions below

So many questions

I’ve had the pleasure of reading both the short story ‘Hera 2781’ and Hestia 2781, which deal with events leading up to this book. And while I definitely recommend that you get hold of both of these books as they are stormingly good reads, if you did happen upon this one and decided to dive in without having read the previous books, I don’t think you’d flounder. Edwards does an excellent job of giving sufficient information without silting up the pace.

Picking up this one reminded me all over again just how much I enjoy Edwards’ bouncy, upbeat writing style. There is an energy and optimism in her work that is so often missing in sci fi writing, which often deals with the worst-case scenarios. That isn’t to say there aren’t disasters and action adventure within this book – they’re there, alright. But it is far more about the people who strive to do the best in difficult circumstances, rather than concentrating on those who are only out for themselves.

The main protagonist, Draco, could so easily have come across as a bit of a Gary Stu – he comes from a rich, well-connected family, can charm the stars out of their solar systems and is classically handsome. But without having him seem unduly victimised or whiny – Edwards also demonstrates that those traits can also be a major disadvantage. It’s cleverly done and a lot harder to achieve than Edwards makes it look. She is also adept at providing all sorts of details about the solar array that powers Earth in 2781, without any of it coming across as remotely boring. It reminds of when she took us on all those futuristic archaeological digs in Earth Girl, which had me rapt. As I read this one the pages turned themselves, until I was approaching the final chapter with dread as I didn’t want the adventure to end – which is always a sure sign I’m reading a well crafted story with charismatic characters, moments of humour and a cracking plot.

Very highly recommended for science fiction fans who appreciate science fiction that isn’t painted in shades of dread. I was provided with a review copy of Array 2781 by the author, which in no way has influenced my honest, unbiased opinion.

Three-quarters of the way through this book I was considering awarding it a full five stars, but the last few chapters left me a little disappointed. I loved the page-turning excitement of Drago's attempt to save a solar wing, but so much more than that, I love the connection that has grown between him and Betha. I will be very curious to see if there are any more developments in that relationship because as it stands, it feels like a let down. Also, is it just me, or does General Admundson still seem super suspicious? I wonder if there will be further revelations there.
By and large though, Edwards has again successfully kept me captivated through a few hundred pages. Her books never mine particularly complex material, but she's so good at satisfying with straight forward storytelling that it feels wrong to complain about that.

I loved it so much!
But what I'm wondering, what's the plot of the next part going to be about??
I mean, the main story points are nearly rapped up.... soooo unless there's a f up...
But no matter what, I WILL pick up book 4 :D

And Janet Edwards needs to stop teasing us with stuff, and just give it to us c:

I thought that nothing could beat the Earth Girl trilogy but the Drago Tell Dramis trilogy is shaping up to be nearly as legendary. Array 2781 follows Drago in the aftermath of the Hestia kidnapping scandal. Things seem to finally be calming down after the leader of one of the main political parties was arrested. There’s still plenty of drama surrounding the fighter team though, personal and professional.

The five solar arrays of Earth are still badly damaged and in need of urgent repairs. They are finally making good progress on fixing the arrays but they are still encountering difficulties. Shipments of supplies have been going missing for months now and Drago suspects that a high profile general may be involved. The supply issues suddenly escalate into a horrible attack targeting dozens of solar array staff though.

They desperately need to figure out who is behind the attack and crucially stop them before they can launch another one. Drago’s personal connection to Earth and the solar array staff drives him to everything all he can to help catch the saboteur. Drago has developed feelings for his liaison officer Betha and he has to keep Earth safe for his lost little cousin Jarra who is stuck somewhere on Earth.

Hestia 2781 focused on the relationships between Drago, Jaxon, and Gemelle. This book focuses more on the relationships between Drago, his parents, and his dreadful cousin Cordelia. Drago finally has a breakthrough in his relationship with his father who is finally starting to treat him like an equal. He also learns more details about how the relationship between his parents started and the different problems they’ve had to overcome.

We get so much background on Drago’s immediate family, more than the basics that his father is the fearsome ironman of Sobek and his mother is the famous composer Madrigal. It’s very interesting seeing the dynamic between the three of them and the impact that Drago’s parents had on him growing up. Additionally, we also learn about Drago’s infamous grandparents Draco Tell Dramis and Persephone Incarnate.

A few incidents that were briefly mentioned in the Earth Girl trilogy are explained such as the Persephone incident that directly involved Drago’s grandmother. There is so much modern history that the Tell clan is closely involved with which is no surprise given their legendary lineage. The two greatest secrets of the Tell clan are also hinted at. I wonder if they will be revealed when Jarra goes through her coming of age ceremony.

Array 2781 is another nonstop adventure with crisis after crisis in true Tell clan fashion. Drago is naturally drawn into getting involved in every major crisis happening across the sector. He also attracts plenty of personal drama despite his attempts to lay low and be inconspicuous until the crucially important gold list meeting. This book is another instant classic with plenty of action and humor but also an inspiring heart of fighting injustice.
