No Idea What I'm Doing But F*ck It

Rate this book
In this book, Ron goes through the process of his journey – from realising that he did not want the same path as everyone else, the time he spent having internal debates and convincing himself to leave, to eventually leaving and seeking his own path by buying a one-way plane ticket. Throughout the process, he writes about the obstacles he had to deal with along the way in having to figure out all the answers alone, seeing how long we take to do the things we wanted all along, and realising that many things in life are actually straightforward, but yet we make it unnecessarily complicated for ourselves.

This book is a compilation of thoughts and lessons learned throughout the journey of "wanting more in life" – expressed in the form of modern poetry and short quotes. Each chapter is categorised into a "phase" in life, and together, the whole book further emphasises the life motto, "no idea what I'm doing but f*ck it".

About the author

At the age of 22, Ron packed his bags and bought a one-way ticket out of the place he lived in his entire life.

Thinking back, “I remember when I was on the plane by myself, leaving for the first time with no destination in mind, there was no fear. It felt strangely… liberating. And it was in those few starting hours of my journey that I already knew that I’ve made the right choice” he said.

“Time flies when you’re on the road. All you do is try to live in the moment and focus on the next thing, and before you know it… years have passed and you have come a long way”.

While on the road, Ron found inspiration in his journey and started documenting his thoughts publicly on Instagram. It was also during this time that he found an interest in writing and in 2020, he started a separate account solely dedicated to posting his writings – @ronwritings.

In less than 2 years, @ronwritings amassed over 600k followers and in December 2021, Ron released his debut book – no idea what I’m doing but f*ck it.

"you have to believe that change is possible. you have to believe that you have the power you need in you."

I am no expert in poetry but this book made me feel so good about myself. Made me want to buy a one-way ticket and just continue on like that. I have done it before and I know I can do it again. I thought about a lot of things I overcome over the years. It was as if Ron had expressed exactly what I have thought for years. I know that in the future if I have to get a push to do something or feel like everything is falling apart, I can refer to this book and say fck it.

Ron has done it yet again.

I started following Ron’s Instagram page back in 2020. At a time when the world stood still, I was confined in my house for weeks and then months, I found Ron’s posts on Instagram to be cathartic healing. Since then, I’ve always looked forward to Ron's work.
I’ve always wondered how Ron’s writings resonate with me, and so many of the 623,000+ people who follow his writing page. Now, having picked up writing myself, I think it is the raw words that Ron lets out through his raw experiences that make our raw emotions resonate.

This book, titled “no idea what I’m doing but f*ck it”, is Ron Lim’s first book and the perfect gateway to experience what Ron’s writings are about - no-frills attached - vulnerable raw words, raw emotions, raw experiences. It is the humane, simplistic approach of the writing that makes it so unique.
Through this book, Ron takes the reader on a journey of his experiences from buying a one-way ticket to the internal dialogues we all face in our day to day lives, be it about self-belief, consistency, uncertainties, or the choices we make.

From the first chapter/part of the book - “no one knows anything” to the last chapter/part - “the answers you need are in you”, Ron gives you the questions you need to ask yourself, the warmth of an old friend, and the friendly push one needs to make a choice. The book also makes one realise that while we all might be living purely different lives, it is this different, unique and yet common ‘human experience’ that binds us all as people.

All in all, this book is a chicken soup for the soul- comforting, warm, and strengthening- and I’m glad I’ve read it.

I’m very happy for Ron as I’ve seen him grow from Instagram to now - self-publishing his first book. As always, I look forward to what Ron's next projects turn out to be and I’m excited to see him grow and share his experiences!

This book has some good advice I need to remind myself of, but I think I'm not a fan of the poetry genre.

What I dislike about modern poetry is that the vocabulary used is frequently less than 20 words. I appreciated the author’s message, but it was far too repetitive.

"you glow differently when you stop giving a fuck about what others think"

"we tell people the things we want to hear but never had the courage to say t to ourselves and call it advice"

"give yourself time
whatever that means to you right now"

"nothing will go completely to plan. nothing. the best plan is to react to whatever comes along."

"you don't know what you are doing so you look for answers in other people, but the truth is, nobody really knows what they are doing either and instead of letting someone who has no idea tell you what to do why not just fuck it up yourself anyway?"

I don't know how to describe the way I feel about this book. Everything that was written felt so personal and in a strange way felt so foreign. I know the author was talking about his personal experiences, but at the same time he was able to put into words the EXACT thing that I would have trouble explaining to someone. If you have a chance I would totally recommend reading this book. It wasnt a Ling one but had so many things worth taking into account.

»make space for the things that make your heart beat
a little faster.«

When you're self-publishing you might also be your own editor. Normally this isn't something I would be able to ignore in a book but despite a few grammatical "thingies" here and there, this book really spoke to me -- so I don't mind! It felt like a series of important, concise reminders I should have written to myself long ago and made sure to read and re-read weekly. It's a quick but important read, especially for those of us who feel stuck in time and space. I applaud the author for self-publishing, because I very much enjoyed this book. Someone should really pick him up for his next work because he deserves all the promotion and success that (sometimes) comes with being published. I look forward to reading whatever he releases next.

This book is everything. Ron is one of the most incredible poets on this planet and he deserve literature rewards! The way he writes is just magical. So pure, straightforward and in just the most relatable and comforting way. The moment he announced that he had written a book I ordered it! I'm so happy. I'll take this book with me everywhere I travel and live <3 no matter what type of person you are, o think you need this book. Especially if you're younger, and is struggling.
My only advice - buy it. The best would have been to but it yesterday, so the second best is to but it today :) I also think that the price is very reasonable which I appreciate a lot!

Much love, Wilma 21 years old

"if you wait for too long, it won't be the same anymore."
Undoubtedly the best book I've bought so far! In fact it's more that a book- a guide to surviving life and a companion. There are things that you need in life nd things that you want, and this book is something that you'll NEED!
