Guardian League #3

We're Going on an Elf Hunt

Rate this book
Fed up with being prey, Red prepares to take the fight to the Infected, but her plans derail when humanity falls victim to an even older foe—greed.

Having found a planet willing to negotiate for the enchanted artifacts used to draw out the Infected, Red provided the Earth a chance to protect itself from invasion. Frustrated at the prospect of a future defined by hiding and defense, Red embarks on a mission to stop the Infected once and for all. But when greed and ambition square off against limited resources amidst a collapsing inter-world economy, Red must forego her quest and keep humanity from destroying itself.

The human colonies, plagued for eons with world-ending attacks by the Infected, battle over the remnants left behind by the vanished elves. And amidst the chaos, her sole comfort lies in an impossible love, doomed by time.

Can Red unite humanity against its common foe, or will the story of mankind end in self-destruction?

I am coming down on the narration and points of view, honestly I think 3 would suffice! It also got a bit convoluted at the end although it could very well have been cleaned up in the final copy

Let me parcel my thoughts out, I do enjoy these books thoroughly but this one was equal parts really good, and a struggle

Red and the gang are back for more action. Off planet, Galad, Red, Harry, Scan, Smith, and Grundle are searching for the elves. They end up making camp in El da’Shar with the Forsaken and Emerald Farms human colonies. While part of the group follows Mort, Forsaken Regent, to colonies for support….the other half is left to fight monsters ported in from a traitor hiding with everyone else’s enemy.

Rocks and Elliah are handling things on Earth with the infested and coordinating with those off planet. When the time comes, Elliah joins the search for the elves. Rocks is facing a mystery that quickly turns into a murderous traitor. Will they find the elves? Can Rocks locate the traitor before anyone else is hurt? Will the infected over take the colonies and Earth?

Ahhhhhh!!! This book. First off, I was left with a cliffhanger. Secondly, I am NOT fond of what happened to one of the characters I love. Thirdly, hot damn this book was good. I liked the back stories. The villain off planet I wanted to punch. The elf high lord I wanted to kill. I’m hoping Scan can work his magic for Red and Smith. I will say if you don’t read the title of the chapters, you will get confused on who is telling the story. Just read it and you will be good to go.

I loved this book this story is just so good I am really looking forward to reading more once there is more out. I really do love the characters especially Red and Galad I like the romance between them it is very well written. There are so many interesting characters to read about here I even like a bit of incite into the villains it makes for a very interesting story. I am really liking how the story is handling many of the serious issues while also having a bit of a light hearted funny side which makes a really interesting story. I am really loving the plot we pick up right from where the last book left off with the characters dealing with the infected and a couple bad elves along with the separate issues of other character all while telling of the past. So overall I am really loving this series so far really looking forward to more.

Slow building series really taking off

The first two books of this series were a slow build but now that the universe has started to flesh out, I really enjoyed this addition. I read it over twenty-four hours as I was
quite invested in the characters and their journey at this point. I found the first book a little bit of a slog, the second one an improvement and this one enjoyable. I am looking forward to the conclusion.

4.5 Rounded to 5

Whew! Well that was UH-MAZING! And a lot 🤣🤣 This is the 3rd book in the Guardian League Series and boy does this pack a PUNCH!

There is so much going on, with multiple POVs, past and present timelines, off-world adventures, 'bamfing' (teleporting) all over the realms and humor that is just SO ME. You have to read it to see what I mean 🤣🤣

You also get a little smoochy here (Galad & Red) and a lot of smoochy-crashy there (Grundle & Smith), and maybe a little hey, hey, hey for Scan in the future. ~insert me humming 'Love is in the air'~🤣🤣

Pair all this with the potential destruction of Earth and all worldkind as war with The Infected still rages and just WOAH! That ending though??!! Ugh .. so good and yet excruciating as I'm left adrift waiting for book 4...

Now this is a Sci-Fi/Fantasy I can 100% get behind and sincerely say...go grab this series! Even if it may not be your norm...it is worth the read. I bet it even becomes a new favorite series. Come on...let's step outside that comfort zone for a series I'm sure you'll love 💕

I sincerely appreciate the publisher and By the Book Virtual Book Promoters for providing me with a review copy. All opinions expressed herein are mine and mine alone.

“Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.”

With detailed world-building, a well-developed cast of characters, some sly humor, and a bit of philosophy, We’re Going on an Elf Hunt swept me away! It’s the third book in The Guardian League, an urban-space-fantasy. Morris’s writing has gained depth and he ruthlessly switched between multiple compelling plotlines, keeping me hooked throughout! About half the book is flashbacks to the past, hinting at the origin of the big bads (the Infected) and also revealing how elves wound up on Earth. I'm not sure who the main character is, but for me, Elliah and the goblins absolutely stole the book. I cannot believe how much I cared about the scaly and fanged goblins! Probably because they are truly gentle creatures and just very likable and I want to know absolutely everything about their culture and origins. There's some truly despicable villains, lots of comradery, and inventive magic.

My favorite element was the world-building and the distinct cultures that he created - the cover here shows a dwarf, a troll, a goblin, and an elf, and that’s just scratching the surface. Each species has its own history, politics, and culture. Here’s how the dwarf describes two humans who have an affinity: “Lani and Red shot the breeze like two cave-sisters hitting the same vein of crystal.” The least appealing part for me was MANY POVs, all in first person, and not in sequential order. It was almost too much at times (I don't like having to go back to double check timeline and narrator identity and I had to). However, I did appreciate that Morris has gotten better at keeping narrators distinct and original compared to the earlier books.

The book surprised me a little by getting quite dark at the end, revealing that the external enemy our heroes are facing is tied to the worst enemy of all - the abuse people inflict on each other. The treatment here is perhaps superficial, but I am confident that Morris will be delving into it more in the final installment. There’s quite the cliffhanger, which I expected, and I can’t wait for the next book. I hope they'll be spinoffs - I want a series set in the AllForest, about the elves and Trolls and the Mother of Trees and the Father of Stones! If you love great world-building and are up for an extended cast, I highly recommend this series! I think you actually could jump into the third book if you don't mind learning on the fly, but the series is richer starting from the beginning.

Content warnings: references sexual abuse, attempted rape/sexual assault, fantasy violence, profanity.

Talk about world-building

The scope and breadth of these books is staggering. So much so, that you really have to pay attention. The sheer logistics that are just alluded to are overwhelming. We go from the context of a small band of warriors to the massive resources of a PLANET put in motion.

Here in book three, I kinda miss the budding relationships (okay, there’s Smith. Super cute).

And somehow, you don’t get impatient for the final conflict. It’s there. Waiting for you. Be patient.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ review for Going on an Elf hunt by @steven.j.morris.writer

Spoilers so if you haven’t read this series… why haven’t you didn’t you read my other review it’s a great series you need to read it !!!

So holy cliffhanger Batman! Like really!! My characters are all up in the air what are we going to do??? I guess read book 4

The POV’s in the book got a bit overwhelming at times but let me say each POV was distinctive and Unique. The world building hit a new level in this book to the point of me asking where are we going now???? This is such a wonderful character driven story. This book is witty and smart. This book was full of action and adventure not skimping on any of these things to get you ready for book 4. I am so glad I didn’t have to wait for the 4th book.

The adventure and nerdiness continue... elsewhere. The back story that's starting to pull at the threads of the why behind everything was great. The constant coupling up of everyone was a little annoying. I mean, these are folks spending all of their effort to save the universe and you expect me to believe they all have time to be checking out their fellow warriors and disappear into the forest for a bit. I mean maybe once or twice, but every planet needs it's own hints at a spicy little tryst? I don't know. Other than that, it's a fun time.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
We’re Going On An Elf Hunt is the third installment in The Guardian League fantasy/sci-fi series by Steven J. Morris.

This genre is out of my comfort zone for sure, but I feel right at home with Red and the gang. I’ve grown to really love this series and am so honored that Steve continues to use VBP for sharing the love for his debut series.

We get tons of backstory here and it’s so impressive. I’m in awe of how a single person (Steve) has come up with this amazing storyline and can keep it all straight. Honestly, it’s genius. 🤯

Red is still a badass here but we see a softer side of her as her relationship with Galad (the Empath elf) develops. We get some new characters too, Matt (a goblin) is my fave. The storyline goes back and forth from new worlds to Earth as our hero’s continue to eek out and destroy ‘the infected’.

Harry and Grundle (#teamgrundle) go through some stuff too - both good (Grundle has a girlfriend) and bad (Oh Harry 🙈). The reader is left with yet another cliffhanger and I’ll be waiting for the 4th book! 🙌🤷‍♀️

If you are a fantasy fan, I cannot recommend this series enough. It’s seriously so smart and witty with fun references and magic galore.

It’s a lot to talk about in a review but it’s all good stuff!

I highly recommend the Guardian League series! I can now confidently say that I will reread this series (I rarely reread books so this says a lot).

I don't want to say much about the plot to hopefully avoid spoilers. We're Going on an Elf Hunt is packed with backstory, but it's done in a way that doesn't detract from the current day storyline or feel overwhelming. The banter between the characters is hilarious and they feel like people I'd like to hang out with...and to have my back against alien invaders. Steven J. Morris has a wonderful writing style that seems to subtly change for each character's narrative. Some of the things he comes up with are amazing and a little terrifying lol. There are several worlds introduced and each one is unique and easy to imagine.

Each book picks up where the last one ended, and each one is as good as, and in some ways better than, the previous book. I really hope there will be more books in the series as I'm not ready to say goodbye to these characters.

Thank you to Steven J. Morris and By the Book VBP for letting me be a part of the book party.

Stephen J. Morris's gorgeous storytelling builds a sensuous and mesmerizing crescendo that reminds me of Maurice Ravel's Bolero. I'm enjoying the whole series and I especially thoroughly enjoyed Book 3, We're Going on an Elf Hunt. On top of the fabulous story and characters, Book 3 has it all: spectacular action scenes, villains you love to hate, spicy romance, deliciously revealed connections within the story arc, fantastical imagery, and some profound philosophical notions. I'm diving into Book 4 right away!

Can I just say that cliff hanger!! Seriously!!! (In a good way) well sort of. Poor Harry. If you want to know then I highly suggest picking up This series’s. All book are very easy fast paced reads. Book two and three get into a lot of POVs but Steven makes it very easy to follow so your never lost going from one person to another. I think book three is my favorite of them so far. I loved all the action and some of the new characters that were introduced. Can’t wait to see what happens to Red and most of all Harry.

Another great installment in the Guardian Leauge series!! This story is so complex, it's hard to follow at times, but SO good, and I have no idea how Steven manages to keep it all straight in his head!!! I loved seeing the blooming relationship between Red and Galad, and the issues they had to work through. Now that I'm finished with the book finally, I'm going to have to go through and read the little short stories that have been coming in the Newsletter!! Can't wait for book 4!!!

This was a strong third entry in the Guardian League series, it had everything that I enjoyed from the previous two books. The characters worked well overall and I was enjoying the feel of the world. Steven J. Morris has a great writing style and can't wait for more in the world.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Really good addition to the series. Characters continue to develop and evolve. Plenty of action and suspense. The story is complex and well worth the reading. Recommended

This one was bit tedious.

I certainly hope all of the confusing back story from recent past through15,000 years help resolve the mysteries. It was a long drawn out book. Looking forward to wrapping this up.

As the other reviews, the narration is to confusing....if you can put the person narrating out of the picture and just skip read....not a bad story
