There are shockingly few resources for learning Afrikaans as a second language. So, really, this deserves 5 stars just for existing. It’s like the definition of being an 아줌마/Karen to give three stars to something that I’m just grateful exists.

But….this has a few issues. Namely, organization.

There are two unforgivable issues: first, the table of contents is at the end. The second is that pronunciation is *also* at the end. Pronunciation lessons are boring, but should always come first.

The other issues are more personal preference. There are three types of lessons: Basic Bootcamp (basic vocabulary/phrases), All About South Africa (cultural info like holidays and famous people, popular food, etc ), and pronunciation. All the lessons of one kind are grouped together.

It would be better if the cultural and vocabulary lessons alternated, mainly because It would help me stay focused and active, in “student mode” rather than passive “listener” mode.

But this is basically a podcast repackaged asan audiobook, so I get it.

Other than that, the sentences chosen as examples are sometimes pretty random. Antique books and stuff like that. More emphasis could have been put on useful vocabulary and phrases.

Despite these criticisms, I am really grateful this series exists!! Keep ‘em comin’, I will keep listening!

Edit: I have been running a lot of this vocabulary by a native speaker, and there are quite a few errors. I am
Not taking any point off this review. But you should be aware there are some issues with the Afrikaans you will learn from this series.

You can find the flashcards I made, roughly based on this book, on Memrise, Quizlet, Quizizz, and Anki. All the flashcards have been double checked by a native speaker and corrected. They are tweaked a bit though, to prevent copyright issues and also just because, like I said, a there are a number of errors in this series. You may not find all the words from this book in my flashcards, there are extra words not in this book. And if, some dear language student in the future comes across this review or my flashcards and notices an error, find me on some platform and message me. I will fix the error, to at least keep the flashcards right haha.
