Asset-Based Community Development: An Incomplete Guide

Rate this book
ABCD stands for Asset-Based Community Development and it refers to a type of community development based on the work of Professors Jody Kretzmann and John McKnight. ABCD challenges the traditional deficit-based approach that tries to solve urban and rural development problems by focusing on the needs and deficiencies of individuals, neighbourhoods, towns, villages, etc. ABCD demonstrates that local assets (people, physical assets etc.) and individual strengths are key to ensuring sustainable community development and that people have a life of their own choosing. Citizens - not professionals, consultants, CEOs or entrepreneurs as traditionally considered - are placed in the lead in ABCD. We believe it is the citizen who rules the future.

"Asset-Based Community An Incomplete Guide" is an accessible beginner's guide to ABCD for those starting out exploring the field, or for those with more experience who want to revisit the fundamentals. It is an excellent primer before going on to books such as "Rekindling A Professional's Guide to Working In Citizen Space" or taking a course at the Centre for Community Renewal (communityrenewal.learnworlds.com).

We called this primer an “Incomplete” guide, because we are very dubious about the notion of a complete guide. "Complete" suggests some expert from on-high has figured it all out and can now offer you a complete map to follow and consume. This to our minds is the opposite of ABCD. We are all on a journey, and this is a report out from the field, no more, no less. Please view it as an invite to join us, as we learn together how to deepen our shared lives.
