I've been reading professionally for 20 years and was hesitant to buy another book on tarot as most are geared toward beginners. But this isn't your typical learning meanings text. This is the book I wish I'd had before I turned pro. Jenna offers so much behind the curtain insight and exercises to prove her points. She brings in psychological knowledge to help you understand the differences between interpreting the cards and providing the best possible guidance for clients. A lot of great questions to ask the cards and clients from a choice-centered perspective. These tips make your readings go deeper than you might anticipate. Anyone thinking of going pro needs to read it. Pros will resonate and might even find new ideas to ponder.

Take the Hesitation out of Tarot.

Will You Give Me a Reading? takes tarot education and frames it in the lens of reading for others. Taking things step-by-step, Matlin discusses everything from self-doubt and nervousness to reading for friends, reading for money, AND dealing with negative feedback. I could NOT have hoped for a more comprehensive guide!

When I am ready to read for others, this is the only tool I will need. Hopefully it helps you with any questions you may be facing also.

This is a book I wish I had when I first started reading tarot for others. It’s a great reminder about boundaries, interpreting the cards, and interpreting our intuition. Perfect for beginner readers and pros.

Really enjoyed this book and its little exercises. Very practical, encouraging and easy to read, understand and do. It read as if Jenna was directly talking to me. In this book, she focuses on lowering the barrier when learning tarot to read for others, on psychology, different kinds of people who ask for a reading, and the importance of the place where readings are done.

The book has short chapters and useful examples.
Even the chapters about being psychic I found insightful, because at first I didn't even know what it meant of whether to believe what was possible for some readers.

I adored Will You Give Me A Reading?.

Granted, I was predisposed - I know Jenna from the professional tarot circles, and joined her in Ireland on her tarot readers retreat to Springfield Castle in Spring of 2022 - however, I do pride myself in being able to think critically and check my biases concerning friends and colleagues.

I agree with Benebell Wen's observations in her foreword, "it is rare to find an author of a tarot book who harmonizes logic and intuition," and "a well-written intermediate text that deep-dives into the bones and spirit of a card reading is hard to fine. Will You Give Me A Reading? has filled that gap."

I've been reading professionally for over 20 years, though not full time as author Jenna Matlin does.

I sat down, and decided this was a great way to dive deeper into one of my newer decks, as I had heard the book provided excellent activities.

I agree!

As a theatre artist by degree and by practice, I had so much fun weaving together my own stories from the cards she drew in many of these exercises. Reading through some of the incredibly challenging situations she's dealt with as a reader, makes me grateful both for my own tamer clientele and for Jenna's resilience. She has stuck through some challenging situations, and still remains true to the cards and the messages coming through, plus has chosen to distill her experience in a way readers at all stages can learn from.

While I obviously cannot really guess how I would have received this book as one of my first texts, as the daughter of a librarian who was taught to love books and to read everything from cover to cover, I appreciate her direction at the beginning of some chapters of, "this chapter is a bit technical, so if you are totally new, you can skip ahead now and return later when you're ready."

It might sound silly, but that little bit of permission, would have meant THE WORLD to me when I was younger and still in my conditioning of - I must read a book from cover to cover. Knowing it was OK to skip around a bit, that I wasn't dumb or somehow disrespecting the book and author by my actions, is big.

Heck, as that permission is one of the things that sticks with me at the end and having slept on it a few days, is indicative in and of it's self.

Which also tie in to one of the many reasons I adore Jenna as a person, reader, and author:

Consent.

She names it, explains how consent work in readings, and calls back to it at all the right times.

Consent was already an important central practice of my life, and it was great to see it named and explained so well throughout the book. There were also new to me bits from Will You Give Me A Reading? that I have already tucked in to my readings for others/day to day conversations:

- fight/flight/freeze/fawn impulses attached to the reversed Knights (or their equivalents)
- monochronic v. polychronic peoples. I knew these time ideas generally, but had no idea they were named! And actually scientific and researched! The research on this has jumped to the top of my "to read" list.
- a recommitment to have compassionate, loving, firm, boundaries.
- taking more time with querents on their questions. I am a reader who is very comfortable giving general readings for so many reasons that I won't get into here. One of the few places I disagreed with Jenna, was in her invitation to do general readings at the end of a session rather than the beginning. I completely understand her logic, however my experience and style flow differently. Which is OK. Because no doubt, one day, I will get the querent for whom that flow will end up being perfect. In the interim, I have noticed that taking a bit more time with my clients on their why - who are more often groups than individuals - has definitely deepened the readings and been a very positive experience for me and my clients.

Where ever you are on your tarot journey - or even if you're one of those folx who are just curious to why tarot works - I highly recommend Jenna Matlin's Will You Give Me A Reading?

I first discovered Jenna Matlin through a video by Benebell Wen on the Five-Minute Party Reading, which featured an earlier book, Have Tarot Will Travel: A Comprehensive Guide to Reading at Festivals as a Tarot Professional (2019). Since then I followed her on TikTok/YouTube, where I learned a few new interesting reading methods, such as the Thin Slice technique, and even a really efficient 5-minute reading using the four Aces.

"Will You Give Me A Reading" isn't a meanings or interpretations book. It's like having your own friendly mentor aunt, who's been in the biz for a very long time, and doesn't mind passing on her hard-earned tips. It's juicy shop talk, the behind-the-scenes of being a tarot reader. I really wish I had read this much earlier in my journey, for example, the chapter called "Half the Work is in the Question". There's definitely an art to guiding a confused, vague question, and really getting to the heart of the matter. Sometimes people come to you not really knowing what they want, and there are soft skills involved in coaxing it out of them, so you can give them a helpful reading.

I enjoyed the case study examples, and it was fascinating to see how she spun the interpretation from the cards that came up. Especially using court cards, as those seem to stump a lot of people, so she has two chapters dedicated just for those. I felt so validated to see that she doesn't recommend One Card readings. I've always found One Card meanings hard to do, and it was always at least 3 cards for me (two was workable, but three always felt more rounded).

Although Jenna Matlin herself incorporates using her psychic impressions in her readings, her advice can still be used by a person like me who hasn't leaned into really developing this area just yet. I appreciated all the tips on guarding your energy and your boundaries, taking care of yourself. There's even a list of crystals and herbs you can use, if you're into that thing. There are tarot journal activities at the end of chapters, which allow for personal reflection on the ideas you just learned.

The Recommended Reading section is gold. I'll be bookmarking it and using it as guide on finding what to read next. There's a psychological flavor to the selection which is absolutely my thing. Earlier in the book there was a section on relating the Knights to trauma responses (fight, flight, fawn, freeze), and that blew my mind. It makes so much sense.

I could relate so much to the examples of querents who have this block that prevents them from hearing what you're saying, and insisting on their own meaning.

The overall impression is that this book is solid on the insider info, but throughout the whole thing, there's a theme of encouraging you to have confidence in your abilities, at whichever point you are in your learning. I think that's very spot on from someone who is a Queen of Wands. For myself, recently I was feeling a little blegh and discouraged with my slow-going tarot practice, and reading this book fanned the tiny spark a little bit and made me feel more positive about what I'm doing.

It's worth having a copy on hand, as this book probably deserves a reread or revisit now and then, both for refreshing your memory on the techniques, as well for a boost of inspiration. Again, this is not a "meanings" book, nowhere is there a reflection on the individual cards. But this fills the gap of... you know how there are "books about books"? This is like, meta-tarot. This is not about the cards themselves, but focuses more about the reader and reading process, especially for those who are thinking about going pro. Recommended for any tarot reader, whether you just started or you've been practicing for years.

It's wild how, with so many tarot books out there, I've never encountered one that gives specific guidance on how to give tarot readings to others! All the books I've read are either beginner guides to learning the cards or books full of spreads and layouts. Which are both excellent, to be clear. But Jenna Matlin's book is so very unique, and she does an incredible job of giving advice on how to read the cards for others with confidence and assurance.

Jenna's approach is both deeply accessible and wildly comprehensive. Despite the fact that she pulls in ideas and layers from tons of sources (I did NOT expect to encounter some basic time theory in a tarot book, but I loved it!) her voice remains measured, approachable, and absolutely understandable. I learned so much from this book that I cannot wait to apply to my own readings.

There are quite many books out there for reading Tarot, and I’ve read quite a few of them. What I like most about this one is that it addresses how to handle a reading that isn’t quite what the seeker wants to hear. It happens, after all, it’s in the cards. So many books guide you through reading the cards, but not how to handle a reading that isn’t positive and could leave the seeker angry or upset.

This is definitely a book to read if you are planning, or are, giving readings to others. You’ll be as pleased with this take on reading the cards as I am.

5/5 stars!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This book is a very helpful tool for those of us wanting to be more in tune and professional when reading tarot to others. I got a lot of insights and tips in this book and I am just so delighted with that. I also appreciate the section in here about ethics and free will which are not commonly talked about in books about esoteric topics (especially ethics). I highly recommend!

Jenna ia an amazing reader and has taken the time to skillfully lay out how we can improve as well. Jenna is one of the best at what she does, and I'm so happy she decided to share her wealth of knowledge through this book!

Jenna Matlin's Tarot books are different from the usual factual ones on the market. Hers always speak to me in a real, "I've got tips for you, my friend" way. This latest book, WILL YOU GIVE ME A READING? is her best, yet! From how to zero in on the REAL question to make a reading more accurate, to developing your tarot language fluency, to separating your emotions from your readings...it's all here in chatting across the Tarot table user-friendly language. From beginner to experienced, there is something in here for everyone. I love Jenna's heart and the way she speaks. You will, too!

The book Will You Give Me a Reading by Jenna Matlin is perfect for anyone reading tarot for others. I believe this book can help beginning, intermediate and, in my opinion, advanced tarot readers. Jenna Matlin covers so many possible scenarios that can arise when reading tarot for other people. She covers so many questions I have had as a very nervous reader when reading in person. I recommend this book to anyone that plans to read on a one-to-one basis. Thank you, Jenna Matlin, for this book!

Jenna Matlin’s Will You Give Me a Reading? has some solid advice for readers looking to build confidence in reading Tarot for others, but it doesn’t quite deliver the depth I was hoping for. Matlin’s friendly tone and practical tips are helpful for beginners who feel nervous about reading for friends or clients, and her anecdotes show she understands the highs and lows of being “on the other side of the table.” But for anyone who’s been reading Tarot for a while, the content feels a bit basic and could have gone further in exploring the more nuanced aspects of professional reading.

One thing Matlin does well is address common fears and pitfalls. Her advice on handling awkward questions or when a reading goes off track was relatable, and I could see it being a relief for those new to reading for others. She emphasizes the importance of boundaries and self-care, which is crucial for anyone diving into Tarot professionally. I especially liked her tips on dealing with tough messages and finding the balance between honesty and compassion—topics that aren’t always covered in Tarot books. But after the first few chapters, I felt like the material started to circle the same points without adding much new information.

The book’s main shortcoming, for me, was its lack of depth. While Matlin’s focus on building resilience and confidence is valuable, the techniques and advice sometimes felt more like common sense than eye-opening strategies. Her emphasis on asking the right questions is solid advice, but it’s ground that’s been covered in countless other Tarot guides. There were moments where I found myself skimming through sections, wishing she’d dig a little deeper or provide a more unique perspective on reading for clients.

That said, I do think Will You Give Me a Reading? has its place, especially for those who are just stepping into reading Tarot for others and feeling anxious about it. Matlin’s warmth and enthusiasm make her a reassuring guide, and the book could be a confidence booster for someone looking to overcome the initial jitters of interpreting cards for someone else. If you’re brand new to Tarot or looking for a pep talk, this book has a lot to offer, but seasoned readers may find it a bit light on substance.

Will You Give Me a Reading? By Jenna Matlin

Filled with valuable information for those interested in or already reading tarot for others – great resource that I would love to have had when I began reading my deck. The lists and hints, tips and activities, personal anecdotes with clarification, and abundance of information eventually sent me into overload and had me realizing this is a book that would best be read with time to spare and use to apply various ideas shared.

Having several tarot decks, spent time getting to know the cards as well as I could, and still feeling a bit lost…this book offered the suggestion of finding one word for each card in the deck to pull up when reading. There was also the idea of researching the various descriptors of cards and combining them, finding one detail on the card that speaks to you, and writing stories about the court cards to get to know them better…all of these ideas would have been useful to me in the past.

This is a book I will be asking my daughter to buy for me and one I look forward to using in the future because it has inspired me to get my decks out again, spend time with them reading what they have to say when asked a specific question.

Thank you to NetGalley and Llewellyn Publications for the ARC – This is my honest review.

This book is very important to read if you are going to do any kind of reading for others, professional or otherwise. I had the good fortune to study this book in an online book group run by Jenna Matlin, the author, and it was very enlightening.
The speed at which I took to read this book is in no way a reflection on its contents, over a year to finish because it’s a lot to absorb and i took on other projects, but finishing the book now I am ever more fuelled to keep going at the reading as I know I love doing them and want to do a great job.
Jenna gives very solid advice from years of experience and practical approaches to readers.
Fantastic resource that will keep close at hand. Thank you 🙏

If you're already familiar with the cards, or at least feel some conceptual & spiritual relationship with Tarot, then this is your next book. I destroyed it in a few days and filled up my journal with *every* activity she describes (Not just the end-of-chapter ones).

I left feeling like I had 10x stronger relationship with the Cards and the process of reading for myself and others. Some of her journaling/study activities had me crying healing tears <3

My readings for friends, family, and myself are significantly more fluid and interesting now. I also feel the self-confidence to push further into the world of Tarot reading because of the practice and skills she gave me.

Thank you for this amazing book!!!

The book is really great and incredibly helpful. Because unlike most other tarot books, here not all 78 cards are described and explained extensively - but it is really about the act of reading (and loving) the tarot cards. You learn so much from Jenna's book, whether you are a tarot beginner or have been working with the cards for a while - you will find lots of ideas and inspiration in this book.

Absolutely recommended!
(By the way, this also applies to Jenna Matlin's tarot readings. These are great as well. One more reason why the book is so successful - she knows exactly what she is writing about!)

Whether you are new to Tarot or working toward becoming a professional reader, this book has something for you. Jenna helps you develop confidence and fluency in your readings, with the philosophy that Tarot is a language. I have found this book to be incredibly helpful on my own Tarot journey, in moving away from memorizing the meanings to developing a meaningful, personal relationship with the cards and strengthening my intuition. Highly recommended!

If I had to choose only one tarot book keep..

If I had to choose only one tarot book keep.. this would be it.
Has totally freed me and changed the way I read tarot. It’s made tarot like a BFF I can call throughout my day and ask quick advice from who answers with wisdom and insight… I’m no longer trying to wrestle a spread but letting the question show how the cards are answering…. I know now that they ARE answering exactly what I asked. I “get” the answer now.
Amazing!

A well written, easy to read book exploring tarot reading beyond definitions and spreads. I like that it got me thinking outside the box, on things like ethics, free will, and intuition. The author also addresses that not all tarot practices or methods are for everyone, and to take what info applies to you. Overall, a good tarot book.

Quick impressions: This is definitely a very good intermediate level book. If you know your basics, this book is a good step up. Even if you never intend to read for others and/or publicly (and many Tarot readers never do), you can get value from reading the book.
