9th Grade English Project?

I teach 9th grade English and I'm pretty sure a freshmen wrote this book for his final project. It's repetitive, doesn't really give concrete examples of 80/20 outside of just saying "focus on 20%." The author hates perfection, which probably means he was never an A student. I gave it a 2 because some chapters made sense, but to dedicate a book to this concept is kind of ridiculous. I'm just glad it was on sale. 80% off because only 20% is useful.

Pareto principle is one of the major productivity tool. AS per the author, Pareto principle will increase efficiency, but not perfection. Life is short and there is not enough time to attain perfection. Efficiency is more important as it will help one to grow in career. 80/20 principle will boost efficiency.

In the book, the 80/20 Principle, the author explains how the 80/20 rule can be applied in different sets/circumstances in one’s life. The principle is great and has been applied by many people in different ways, but the book is not as good as it could be. The author has not taken the time out to actually explain how the 80/20 rule can be applied in different sets/circumstances in one’s life and perhaps analogies or testimonials of people who have applied and succeeded by applying this principle also seems to be missing.

I am thankful that I became aware of the principle of energy conservation as early as possible in my life. I realized that I was already on the path suggested by this book and it came as an assurance of the right path chosen. This book is a must read for all those who wish to save and conserve energy for the important things of their lives rather than consuming themselves by doing unimportant mundane things.

There is not much to say about this book except the fact that for everything in life the author believes and proposes that we should apply the 80/20 rule.

First of all, 80/20 is a Pareto principle which basically means that 20% of your actions produce 80% of the results or in other words, if you focus on the really important matters (i.e. the 20) than the rest of matters will be taken care of by itself (i.e. the 80).

The principle is great and has been applied by many people in different ways but I didn’t appreciate the book or the writing that much as the author has simply provided different titles to the chapters such as relationships, studies, employees and colleagues and the like and proposed the 80/20 rule. The author has not taken the time out to actually explain how the 80/20 rule can be applied in different sets/ circumstances in one’s life and perhaps analogies or testimonials of people who have applied and succeeded by applying this principle also seems to be missing. I would much rather recommend reading the compound effect. Brilliantly written with personal experiences and how to steps.

If you're already familiar with the Pareto Principle, skip this book; you're unlikely to learn anything new, and the content will feel like a blog post stretched thin.

If you're new to this material, however, it's a *very* lightweight intro to the idea.

Overall, it's repetitive and not substantive (for me), but I did appreciate the treatment of relationships, as well as the section on phones.

I had a high expectation for this book claiming that it talks about how to get done more with less effort and changing life in theprocess. Initially the author narrates about the Pareto principle 80/20, how it influenced him and why he wants to implement it in all aspects of life. Then he gives an idea about what to expect in further chapters. 80/20 strategies suggested for most aspects are agreeable and pragmatic whereas few suggestions are timesavers at the cost of unhealthy choices like refrigerating foods in advance to save time and cut down the cost of eating out in restaurants and ignoring perfectionism forsake of achieving results and saving time. The author surprised me with his suggestions for finance management too which wasn't what I expected. There’s a lot of information and suggestions to apply in various aspects of life from everyday activities to running small businesses. By the time I noticed there are areas where the author could've given better insights, the book came to an end concluding that this book is to give a new perception and its only to create this 80/20 mindset. For some reason that changed the way I felt about this book and content until then. I figured it out that reason to be the contradicting impression I had with the book subtitle with the concluding final thoughts of the author. If ever the final thoughts were in a different rephrased way pretty much adhering to what he claimed in the beginning would have made me give 5 stars for this book. Apart from that, I really enjoyed my reading journey with this book and extending my gratitude for the author to enlightening readers like me with the pareto principle which I only learnt from this book.

I've implemented 80/20 for over a decade and believe in the principle. This is a high-level introduction, but reading it acted as a nice refresher/reminded for me. The book has a few editorial errors.

80/20 Your Life! covers several essential areas in your life where a simple mindset change produces a significant impact. This change is adopting the Pareto Principle, the 80/20 rule. I found Damon’s insights original, practical, useful and I kept my head saying “yes, that’s it!” most of the time. In the end, as Damon says, success is not measured by how hard you work and try to do better. It’s about find he leverage. This book is a perfect example of Archimedes insight “Give me a place to stand and with a lever I will move the whole world.” This is what this book can do in your life, “move your whole world” toward greater success.

HIGHLIGHTS:
1. The 80/20 LIFE:
- That’s the 80/20 rule in a nutshell: doing more with less.
- Being efficient means you’re getting things done in a methodical manner. Makes the best use of your resources.
- Start with a purpose, and then concentrate on the few inputs related.
- Greater simplicity leads to greater efficiency.
- It’s about changing how you perceive the connection between your time and effort.
- Imperfect results are the accepted cost of sustained efficiency.
- Dedicating our focus and energy to tasks that produce the greatest impact with regards to our goals.
- Focusing on the big stuff, the 20%, saves valuable time, ramps up productivity, and moves the needle further when it comes to goal achievement.
- most of the things that trigger my unease are not worth my attention. This is consistent with the Pareto principle. Eighty percent of the items that cause me concern never come to pass. Therefore, they can be ignored without consequence.
- By focusing on the 20% that matters, you can accelerate the decision-making process and feel comfortable owning your choices.
- Once you clear your plate of the noncritical tasks, you’ll be more inclined to take action on the few important ones that remain.
- when you attend networking events, focus on the 20% of individuals you know are able to help you. Nurture those relationships.

2. HEALTH
- short walks and pushups.
- eat something before you arrive at the event. Almonds and apples are good options because the contain fiber. The fiber will give you a sensation of satiety, which will prevent you from gorging later.
- you don’t need to do more exercises. You just need to do the right ones.

3. LEARNING:
- your ultimate goal in learning new things is to become more effective, more productive, and ultimately more valuable. Perfectionism has nothing to do with these outcomes.
- Negative outcomes don’t imply failure as much as suggest the value of revisiting objectives and considering different,

4. READING:
- commit to jumping ship at the 25% mark if a book fails to engage you.
- Come back to these passages later for reminders or to glean new insights from them.
- Social media has bamboozled folks into believing their online relationships are just as rich and textured as those they enjoy in person.

5. RELATIONSHIPS:
It’s difficult to appreciate our loved ones when we’re irritated with them.
- Much of our irritation stems from our immediate circumstances.
- tendency to maintain too many friendships. Their time is divided in too many directions, leaving little to spend where it’ll yield the most rewarding results.
- Saying no to people you’re unlikely to enjoy will allow you to more quickly find people you will enjoy.
- Successful dating isn’t about finding the perfect partner. It’s about identifying and spending your time with the ones who show the greatest potential.
- The older we get, the more importance we place on our values and convictions.
- Always remain approachable. Even though most new relationships quickly fizzle, you might meet someone that eventually becomes a great friend.
- Most of us maintain too many relationships, and end up spending valuable time on those we don’t enjoy.
- Refrain from returning voicemails and texts unless they’re urgent. In most cases, they won’t be.

6. BUSINESS:
- Your best customers will generate very few customer service problems.
- Bend over backwards for your best customers. These are the folks who’ll spend the most money buying your products or services.
- “Opportunities” may sound promising, they’re distractions. They’ll spread you too thin and divert your attention to things that lie beyond your core competencies.
- Diversification can be a great way to spur growth. But it’s important to diversify in ways that allow you to leverage your current assets and resources. Any opportunity that doesn’t allow you to do so is a distraction, and possibly a costly one.
- Nurturing top talent isn’t a simple task. But if you give them the tools and offer the right blend of motivation and guidance, you’ll see these employees flourish.
- Your time as a manager is limited and always in demand. You can’t spend your day catering to the neediness of a few employees.

This book annoyed me. Seriously. Though I believe the principle of 80/20 is useful and actually have already used it before picking up the book, the ruthlessness with which is was suggested to be applied here set my teeth on edge. I see some people take similar paths, and while I believe everyone should play to their strengths, at a certain point, this kind of behavior leaves a mess for someone else to clean up, everything you 80'ed out of your life but is actually still important to the community, and someone else has to pick up.

I couldn't get over the feeling that I was listening to a middle aged, successful, guy explaining why everyone else should pull themselves up by their bootstraps and be as successful as him. When he assumed that someone could write a list of 100 friends, as a given, my negative reaction was gut level. Even as I agreed with him about nurturing a close, smaller group to put investment into.

The writing was redundant. This could have been an article, explain the principle, suggest how it can be used across several situations, move on. I needed to 80/20 reading the book, which I pretty much did, I scanned through it, focusing on 20 percent of the text. However, perhaps some other readers will enjoy the repetition. That's a personal preference.

Take the idea, apply it with compassion, to yourself in others, read the first 20%.

Okay read

As the title says the book focuses on how the 80/20 principle can be applied to various aspects in life. The author doesn't go in depth into each aspect but gives generic examples around them. Many of the things mentioned are common sense topics so just flicked through the book for taking away some key snippets.

Seems like this book is being written for lazy ones and by a lazy one. In my opinion, Pareto Principle doesn't seem to apply everywhere, as there are certain skillful activities/goals that demands immense focus and time where one can't really think of escaping the long route.

One of the best life changing self help books

A lot of self help books work on an individual at the emotional and psychological level, but this book works on practical level. It not only theoretically explains the meaning of the 80/20 Pareto principle, but tells you actual practices on the ground level to implement the same in various areas of life.
I am thankful that I became aware of this principle as early as possible in my life, so that I can extract the maximum potential from the 24 hours I get everyday. I did not realize the fact that I was already on the path suggested by this book. This book came as an assurance of the right path chosen.
It is a must read for all those who wish to save and conserve energy for the important things of their lives rather than consuming themselves by doing unimportant mundane things.

This book is incredible it should be given a 5 star and i encourage everyone to give it a chance because I personally love it!!! The metaphoric words and life experience samples and other people choice experience with the laws of attraction, Craig use to understand this process of 80/20 are wisely toughs and dynamic thinking, everything Craig's refer too as enough charisma to allow your mind to get profoundly attach to acquire the want to pursue the laws of attraction, i think for me his sens of humor makes it worth while to read or listen on audio, either way i love every single books he wrote.

Just what I needed

As a new manager of a high performing team, I was looking to leverage our productivity. We just never seem to be able to get the high priority stuff done. We're audited multiple times per month, and no sooner do we get the audit report, another audit is scheduled. I was looking for a way to get more done in between the audits; to correct the findings. The 80/20 is the answer I was looking for. This book was easy to read and follow and to apply to my situation. I've read many of Damon's other books and they always hit their mark. I highly recommend this book.

Anyone who wishes for a maximisation of outcome with minimal effort, this book provides loads of contextual examples of how that can be done. A good starting point for experimenting with efficient working models that works (and not).

For me personally, the narrative style of the book seemed too repetitive and hence I started losing focus. While there was a chapter on the book that said if you are not able to read a book with ease and have to really take effort, then you should move on to the next, I decided to see through till the end as has been my habit, despite being tempted to drop this one at that point.

LOL. First I have to say that I went to the sections most relevant to me, like the author suggests later in the book.

Also, to my surprise, I realized that I have already been following this principle for the past 10 years of life. I always set a 5-minute time limit for each task: emptying the dishwasher, vacuuming the floor or vacuuming the sofa. Over the years, it has become a sort of game but it keeps me on point. A set time every week for talking to people I am close to. A quarterly review of finances. No fancy diets but balanced home-cooked meals and home exercises.

Sometimes, you just need a better way to describe a philosophy you've already been living.

Really enjoyed reading this one, a fun and productive read! Frames your mind to focus on getting to the core in anything you want to progress in - whether it be a skill, work productivity levels, fitness, cooking, household chores, time management, education, investing, social relationships, business decisions, teamwork and lots more. Focuses on cutting out the potatoes and getting to the meat! Definitely one I'll revisit now and then to get a refresher! Recommended :) !

Amazing, simple and easy to implement

You read this book and say "oh this is obvious, I know it. "But you don't consciously put effort on these tasks.
How to take less stress of getting everything right and just start and focus on highly important tasks and ignore un productive or less productive, is what I got from this. And he talks about each aspect of life be it job, work, family, finances, education, networking or business. Good read.

Not great, but not bad. I first learned of the Pareto Principle 16 years ago in early 2005 in grad school. Therefore, I was already familiar with the basic concepts. This book was a good refresher. I still believe these books (by Damon Zahariades) should be condensed and combined into one large book that sells for less than the total of the individual short books. Just one person’s opinion. Worth the read if you’re not already familiar with 80-20.
