The discovery of her mother’s diaries unravels a secret which sends Lani on a journey to New Zealand …
She lost her mother in an accident. Now, Lani Dekker is determined to meet the man who, according to her mother’s diaries, is her father. He’s not what she expected, a bit on the extravagant side, but she soon warms up to him, thanks no less to Dylan, her father’s neighbour. Despite her attraction to Dylan, she can’t figure out whether he’s a friend or foe.
Dylan Harper is merely going through the daily motions after his wife died in a ski crash. That is, until his life is turned upside down by the arrival of his neighbour’s daughter. Their attraction is instant, even more so when they wake up in the same bed after an earthquake. However, it’s her accusation that his interest in her involves her father’s money rather than their mutual magnetism that derails their newfound bond.
Will finding the truth about her parents be a chance for Lani and Dylan to overcome their differences?
Iris Blobel writes warm, sexy, and sometimes witty Australian Contemporary Romance books for readers who, like herself, still strongly believe in love and Happily Ever Afters. And she knows HEAs. Her couples are hungry for life, done with the past, passionate about family, and emotionally hopeful for a future. The stories are mainly set in Australia but also in New Zealand and even the US, depending on where her travels take her. She loves nothing more than for her readers to join her on her journeys.
This is a Women's Fiction/Romance. This is a plot driven book that is very fast paced. I really enjoyed this book and the characters, but there were times that Lani's character really drove me crazy. I felt that Lani's character acted way younger than she really was. That fact did not upset my reading or stop me from really enjoying the story. I love the message in this book. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher or author (Iris Blobel) via Booksirens, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

In the Shadow of a Lie by Iris Blobel is a wonderful, heart-warming romance that spans two continents and two generations. The time period for this story is open-ended. Bar the use of cell phones, it could be written in this century or the last. It is a heartfelt story about family bonds, fear, regret, love, the need to control, and the consequences of actions that may have been taken years ago that come back to haunt a person, turning their world upside down. The main characters are Lani Dekker, Dylan Harper, Teddy and Mae Larson, Tobias Linaker, and Lani’s grandparents.
In the Shadow of a Lie catches the reader's attention in the opening paragraph and then takes the reader by the hand and leads them along a rocky path to the last page with a surprising ending that is totally unexpected. The descriptions of the area in which the story takes place are wonderful and help to bring images to mind of the world beyond where we live and to see a totally different part of the world through the eyes of the characters. Iris Blobel uses each of her characters with their own unique personalities to build a lovely and compelling story that makes it a must-read. The author highlights the fact that romance has not changed but brings a whole new dimension to how we see it and how the younger generation sees it. Thank you for this delightful story. I really enjoyed it.>
In the Shadows of a Lie was an excellent read. Lani uncovers a deep, dark secret that her grandfather kept for all these years. She finds her mother's diary and learns of her birth father.
Lani saved her money to travel from Melbourne to New Zealand to meet her father for the first time. He never even knew he had a daughter, thanks to Lani's grandfather.
While in New Zealand, Lani meets Dylan. Essentially, this is two romances working side by side, though the main romance is Lani and Dylan's story. The other romance is between Lani's mother and her long-lost father, with the drama heightened by Lani's grandfather's involvement.
Heartwarming story about love, forgiveness and acceptance. Lani's grieving her Mother's death and trying to cope, when her grandpa opens up and tells her about an untruth, lie. She finds her lost father, unbeknownst to him he even has a daughter. Toby, Lani's birth father, never married or loved another woman after her mother. Toby's neighbor, Dylan, and long time friend had lost his wife after only 2 years of marriage and he is still missing her when Dylan finds Lani in the stairwell of Toby's home. Lani's mother's belief in memories and forgiveness helps Lani move on in forgiveness toward her Grandpa, accepting and loving her Dad, Toby and loving Dylan for who he is.

My overall impression of the book was good. Interesting story, beautiful country, secrets between people.
It's a story of a family, story of lies and silence that can destroy people and their relationships.
As for characters, I'd say that they were not completely clear for me. I didn't have a good sense of their appearance and personalities. There definitely were some glimpses, but not enough for me.
What made me happy was the acceptance of mistakes that were made in the end. And mending of relationships.

A very emotional book about family ties and acceptance. I really enjoyed seeing Lani and her father start to get to know each other and connect, it was written realistically and I really appreciated that. I also liked the resolution that happened with Lani and her grandfather.
If you like books about family secrets and how lies can reverberate throughout the generations I would very much recommend this book.
