Mockingbird Place #3

The Fireman in Unit C

Rate this book
JACKSON

I'm a bit of a neat freak. I have my reasons. Call it OCD. Call it dealing with the past. Call it whatever you like. I call it keeping life nice and tidy. An act of arson to the hot fireman's unit next to mine makes my life messy. Real messy. What was I supposed to do? He's needed a place to stay and I had a spare bedroom. You see I've been into Eli Grayson for some time. But he has baggage. An ex-boyfriend who just won't go away. And worse, Eli seems oblivious to the jerk's manipulating BS. Willpower. That's what I need. Lots of willpower. But the more time I spend with him, the less willpower I have. He's got it all together, even if he forgets to hang the towel up after a shower. Me? I'm great with keeping the towel in place, but I definitely don't have it all together. I just have to get through the next few days until he can move back into his apartment and back into his crazy life with his ever-present ex. That's it. Should be simple. But with him right across the hall every night I'm afraid it's going to be anything but simple.

The "duh" gif above was because I read anything and everything firefighter related. But now the "duh" gif is more about me being speechless. This book was bad. Not "offend my sensibilities" bad, but bad none the less.

I'll write a review when I can figure out how to express myself.

****4 Fiery Stars****

This story has a lot of action and gives the reader awareness of some social issues not usually brought out in the open. Jackson and Eli live in a complex called Mockingbird Place. Jackson has OCD, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. He has to have his space clean and neat, obsessively clean and neat. This stems from what he suffered through during his childhood. Eli lives by himself and is a fireman. He has an ex boyfriend who doesn't want to let go. The story starts with Jackson saving Eli from his apartment when someone throws a Molotov Cocktail through his window. Someone appears to be targeting gay people. Jackson has been attracted to Eli but never thought Eli would feel the same. He invites Eli to stay with him while his apartment is cleaned up. I love how all of the neighbors come together and help. There are some very interesting characters that live in this complex! The chemistry between Jackson and Eli immediately sparks to life and there are some steamy encounters. I don't want to recap the whole story but there are some scary moments, some angst, and obsessions revealed. Kudos to the author for tackling the issues of OCD and hoarding and bringing them out in this light and quirky story!

Wow, to say I didn't like this is an understatement :-/. All over the place and just ... odd :-/. I MIGHT decide to give one more book a try and if that one doesn't work either, I'll know it's time to call it quits for good where Kris Cook is concerned.

While this is the third book in this series, it could be read as a standalone. Personally, I'd recommend reading the first two in the series before starting this one as I think you'll get more enjoyment from this that way.

Here in The Fireman in Unit C, we get a bit of drama with the suspense and mystery surrounding whoever is setting the fires in the community. It hits right at home for the Mockingbird Place residents, and while you might think there's an obvious culprit, there's enough doubt to keep you guessing.

Jackson and Eli seem like a very good match, though Jackson does waver a bit. They go from good to tension to good to more tension, keeping things on edge for a good chunk of the story.

I did feel that things were a little rushed in this book, and at the beginning it felt like I was dropped into the story already in progress, but other than that it was a good overall read, and fans of the series will be happy with the results. We also get some glimpses toward other possible couple matchups for upcoming books in the series, so I'm looking forward to reading more.

If you have not read the below I would recommend reading those books(s) first
The Marine in Unit A (Mockingbird Place, #1)
The Cowboy in Unit E (Mockingbird Place, #2)

I thought I could jump into series on the third story and be okay but that is not the case. You get to know about all the people in the community along the way so when I picked up this book I was a little lost. These two men are both carrying around there own issues. When they are stating their relationship one decides that he just might not be good for the other. As they both must work through their past issues their relationship goes really fast. I didn’t feel the connection I thought I would with the characters so it seemed more forced then an even progression of the relationship. Can these two figure out if they are going to stay together or if they just need to be apart?

I really enjoyed this one. Mockingbird Place is a tight knit group of people. I like the different dynamics of the people who live there. Jackson and Eli have had sparks flying, but never acted on it. After someone sets Eli's place on fire it brings those two closer together. True feelings are realized, but will Jackson's past prevent him from a future with Eli. Things escalate with the arsonist where lives on the line. The waffling of Jackson was a little on the annoying side, but I truly understand because he has his own demons to work through. I really like the white kitty Snow that's in the book. makes this cat lover happy. I also like the set up for the next book.

Set your heart on fire with this one in the Mockingbird Place series. Just when you think that these stories cannot get any better, Kris one ups the story and keeps you wanting to read this all in one sitting.
This is Jackson and Eli's story. They both like each other, but skirt around each other dealing with their own drama. Jackson has a major OCD issue based upon his past and Eli has an ex that cannot deal with the word, "EX". Unfortunately, for Eli his apartment is set on fire by someone and is displaced. While tragic, this gives Jackson a chance to help Eli (even if only as a friend). Eli moves into Jackson's while his apartment is being refinished.
They each give mixed signals and each have their own jealousy to deal with when it comes to them attempting a go at a relationship. Only the crew at Mockingbird Place can set these two straight to see what is in front of them.
After many events that occur in this book, Jackson and Eli finally tame the fire and give it a go at a relationship. While the fire may be tamed, their love for each other is on fire. While reading this you get a sense of Deja vu when a turn of events occur and they each are put in the same situation. What you may be wondering? Mmm read it and find out cause both times you gasp. You may just need the oxygen mask from a fireman when reading this book. Just saying. A blast from the past is thrown at us with the Doctor and I may just have heart palpations reading this upcoming book. Thank goodness there will be a doctor onsite. haha.

Hearts on Fire...

I loved revisiting Mockingbird Place. All the residents are close knit friends and have each others' backs. The Fireman in Unit C is the third book in the series that I have read so far.

Eli and Jackson are made for each other, but they don't see it yet. Jackson has OCD issues and feels no man would want to take that on in a relationship. Jackson had a tough childhood and is still coming to grips with the fallout. He needs someone who will love him despite everything that has led him to his OCD problems. Eli is a fireman who has feelings for Jackson but he too has baggage in the form of a disgruntled ex.

There is definitely lots of drama in this story, but it makes for an interesting read. We get a hint of what is to come in the next story in the series, and I am looking forward to reading to see what comes next.

Fires for the Fireman

An entertaining story of a couple with baggage that find love. Protagonists Eli, the title character, and Jackson, a student nextdoor, face challenges separately and together, as their bond forms. Both characters are drawn well, the plot moves along well and the Dallas setting is nicely visual.

As I am a gatherer of books, I collect books and ebooks from a variety of sources: Goodreads wins, Bookhub, BookFunnel, emails from authors and publishers, and others. I do lose track of their sources. But, as a reader, I feel I should give an honest, unencumbered review for all I read.

I really loved the action and drama in this one. Even though Eli and Jackson had been friends for a good while first, I felt it was a little too mushy too soon. The pace was faster than I thought the situations warranted.

Felt like a real couple

This is probably my favorite in the series so far. I liked that Jackson and Eli had a history as friends and neighbors for so long that their getting together in this book felt natural.

✩ ✩ ✩ ✩ FOUR-STAR ✩ REVIEW ✩ ✩ ✩ ✩

Judging a Book by it's Cover:
Evening city skyline below lead characters. Synopsis sounds chaotic, crazy and fun!
Looking Deeper:
First Person POV, Jackson's perspective.
Jackson suffers OCD as a result of childhood shame and guilt over his hoarder mother. He's a bit neurotic and manic, too. He's also studying to become a psychologist. Eli lives next door. He's a fireman. When a firebug targets Eli's unit, Jackson opens his doors to Eli without hesitation. Both men have been attracted to the other for some time now, but neither have ever made a move - oh, and they each have a TON of emotional baggage.
I love Eli's strong, supporting and nurturing nature towards everyone, yet is not afraid to get a bit dominant bossy in private. He's a genuinely good guy that you cannot help but fall for and hope the best for. Jackson took longer to warm up to. His hot/cold, on/off attitude left me wondering if maybe HE was the one that should be evaluated at a mental health facility. Through council from Harvey and Aunt Jenny, he finally starts to pull his act together and becomes a more stable individual. The residents of MP provide a full and rich cast of characters that are always enjoyable. Add external conflicts, namely and arsonist - which may or may not be Scott, and Brad, and you've been treated with a bit of suspense and mystery. The plot is dynamic, the writing flows smoothly. Unfortunately, I figured out the firebug pretty early on and it left me wondering how THEY missed it. Other than that, it was great. The endearments in the last third of the book are very heavy and comes off a bit TOO mushy at times, but not so bad to be distasteful. The conclusion is mostly solid and wholly satisfying. We are also offered a tease about the next book to the series.

I really like this series so far and can not wait to read more.

However, I really miss multi pov with these books. The only time they show a multi pov is in the last 2 chapters. I need it throughout. Give me what both main characters thoughts and feelings are. Show me their depth. Give me something to become emotionally attached to. With a single pov, it's hard to grow an attachment to both characters.

The story line was pretty good. It was pretty obvious from the get go who our resident baddy was in this one, but it still made for interesting reading. Granted, we had a 50/50 chance.

We got to learn a lot of back ground about Jackson in this one, but not really a lot about Eli. We were kinda left in the dark about him except for his ex Scott. I missed the characters from book one in this one. I really liked those two and wish they would have shown up other than one lil mention snippet in this one. I like when a series gives me updates on what the other characters from the previous books are doing. Example, Ava dating someone new, etc.

I did like the characters, I just needed a bit more from Eli. The story flowed nicely. The dialogue segments seemed kinda choppy with a few of the characters (almost like thrown in as an after thought).

Written as a first person/single pov. (except for the last 2 chapters)

All in all, I did enjoy this book and look forward to more.

Would I recommend this book? Yes

Would I read more from this author? Yes

Copy provided by Enticing Journey Book Promotions for blog tour review

Even though this is the third book in the series The Mockingbird Place, I went ahead and jumped on reading it for the blog tour. It can be read all on its own, except I don't really recommend it. Mockingbird Place is a community somewhat like Melrose Place where everyone is involved in everything .... so in order to fully enjoy the story, it might be best to start from the beginning. But that's just a personal preference of mine. The book can be fully enjoyed all on its own #PROMISE
Now on to the story .... so Eli is in a pickle. His apartment was just torched and he needs a place to crash. Well, Jackson is more than happy to accommodate ;) lol Both men have been attracted to the other for some time now, but neither have ever made a move. Will this unfortunate circumstance be the push they've both needed to see where their attraction might lead? Maaaaaaybe ... but there's a lot of influences at play. We have neurotic OCD baggage, ex-boyfriends who may or may not know what ex means, an arsonist and a whole lot of neighborly love.
I really enjoyed reading this story. I can't really say that any of it wow'd me, but it was a steady enjoyable read. I think I would have liked a little more development between Eli and Jackson, they felt a bit rushed to me. But I also think that maybe I missed that development/growing feelings from previous books.

** Copy provided to Bayou Book Junkie in exchange for a fair and honest review. ***

After an arsonist sets Unit C on fire, Jackson offers to share his own unit with sexy fireman Eli. However attracted Jackson is to Eli, he's not too sure about giving into his feelings, seeing as Eli's ex is still very much present in Eli's life and Jackson is dealing with a lot of emotional baggage himself. As if that wasn't enough, the arsonist seems to be fixated on Eli, although is he who the real target is?

The arsonist storyline was very good. I had my suspicions on who it might be, but the author managed to keep me interested in that part of the storyline.

I also loved that the Mockingbird Place family is such a tight-knit group. I loved how they all rallied to help when something happened to one of their own and how some of their stories got intertwined with the main story in this book.

I loved Eli. Sweet, sexy, very dependable Eli. And after a bit, I warmed up to Jackson, but he was too much of a hot mess, going on and off and hot and cold with Eli most of the time. I think I would've enjoyed the book a whole lot more if it'd been Eli's POV and not Jackson's, or at least if we'd gotten a dual POV book.

Anyway, the book is well-written and enjoyable for the most part, although I could've done without the mushiness in the last portion of the book, it was still a good read.

This my third book that I've read by Kris Cook and I must say that I have thoroughly enjoyed each and everyone of his story's. This story will have some twists and turns throughout the story that you won't expect. This is Eli and Jackson's story and what a touching story it is, the story opens with the worse nightmare that anyone can have and that is a terrifying house fire. Eli just happens to be a fireman and he's the victim of arson and then there's Jackson who steps up as a good neighbor and reaches out to Eli an invite for him to stay with him . But poor Eli comes with some baggage and that baggage goes by the name of Scott, who just happens to be the ex that won't let goof Eli. But Eli isn't the only one with baggage ,Jackson has his own demons .This is a romantic story of love and demons will those two be able to overcome everything for love. Will Eli ever fine out who set fire to his apartment or does he already know who did it? This touching story by Kris Cook will grab you and hold you onto it's pages from start to finish and will leave wanting more. Kris Cook has given us such a well developed story with characters that are always strong and loving and that is what make the story flow so smoothly. I could go on and tell you more about this touching story but that would spoil it for you. I highly recommend that you read this touching story ,you won't be disappointed.

Eli & Jackson have been a part of this series from the beginning. I was excited to read their story and watch them fall in love...though I think they’d already fallen, they just needed help getting together.

There are definitely some twists and turns in this novel that I didn’t see coming. As a reader, I had expectations for certain characters and they completely blew me out of the water...I had no idea what was going to happen next sometimes.

I liked that the story was told from just Jackson’s POV so that we could imagine (and I even found myself being more sympathetic to) Eli’s needs as I was reading. Jackson totally has the hots for Eli though and this paragraph says that with the best words:

He’s got everything I find attractive in a man. Good looks. Warm personality. Honesty. Kindness. The whole package.

I really cheered thru the whole novel for Eli & Jackson to get their crap together and wake up and see what was in front of them. And of course, their are some extra steamy scenes that I wouldn’t want to give up, too.

Overall, I think the author is doing a great job with this series and I can't wait to read the good doctor’s story next!

The Fireman in Unit C was the first I've read in the Mockingbird Place series, so each book can be read as a stand alone - but after reading Fireman - I will definitely be going back to read the others in the series.

Kris does a good job of bringing you into the inner circle of the friends that all live at Mockingbird place. You feel the sense of family, love and protection they all have for one another.

Eli's apartment goes up in flames - leaving a mystery as to who would want to harm the handsome fireman, who is a friend to all those who know him. His next door neighbor Jackson is there to lend a helping hand and lets Eli stay with him while the investigation is taken care of and he receives money from the insurance company to replace the items that are now gone. Jackson has always had a crush on Eli, but both men come with enough baggage to make anyone run for the hills. Jackson has a severe case of OCD and Eli has an ex-boyfriend who seems to manipulate him into still helping him out whenever he needs him.

But things aren't always as them seem.

I truly enjoyed the book and look forward to reading more from Kris!

Well, unlike The Marine in Unit A, the Fireman in Unit C wasn't as compelling for me. I missed The Cowboy in Unit E, so I felt lost in the series with the addition of new characters. My fault for not staying on track. That said, the relationship between Eli and Jackson felt forced, then once it happened, it advanced too quick for my liking.

Eli is the Fireman in unit C at Mockingbird place and Jackson just lost his roommate to another neighbor, which makes room for Eli when tragedy strikes. These boys are both carrying mounds of baggage as well. As things start to heat up, Jackson gets cold feet and decides that he isn't good enough for Eli and without warning, turns on him. Sick of mind games, Eli lets Jackson go and hopes that he comes to his senses about the relationship and how they can overcome the past together.

The book is well written with both men having a say and I loved that we are still in touch with all the neighbors at Mockingbird place. I didn't connect to Eli and Jackson this time around, I wanted more from them. Maybe some more heat, or angst, I don't know.

**The Fireman in Unit C, Book 3 of the Mockingbird Place series by Kris Cook is another fun read. You can read as a standalone but you understand more about the backstory if you read the series in order. We have met Eli and Jackson before now.
Eli Grayson is a Fireman who loves his job and has good friends in the fire department. Eli has just gotten back to living alone. Now different attacks are happening to him.
Jackson McAllen, an Artist, psychology student, has OCD. He is living alone in the Unit next to Eli and has been attracted to him for a while. When Eli needs a friend Jackson is the one who offers his support.
Kris Cook gives us another issues driven story that his Mockingbird Place Guys must deal with to get their lives settled. Kris keeps us up to date with the lives of the other residents of Mockingbird Place. I loved Eli and Jackson’s story. If you have read this series you are so going to enjoy Fireman. It is a must read to discover Jackson & Eli’s secrets-I loved it. I look forward to the next book in this series -Doctor in Unit H. Give Kris Cook’s Mockingbird Place a try; it is a nice place to visit.
Thanks Kris Cook & Good Writing

Finally, this series gave me a story with some substance. The character's of Jackson and Eli have A-more back story going on to make their story more interesting and B-current events and situations that make the story move at a faster pace and more interesting.

Eli-the sexy firefighter who lives next door to Jackson, the young college student with OCD issues. Eli-who has an ex who is suffering from his own demons and mental illness. And someone is trying to hurt Eli by setting his apartment and car on fire.
Jackson, who now is living alone since Trace moved in with Luke, offer's up his home to Eli when his is damaged in the fire. These two men are attracted to each other but Jackson thinks his problems make him unattractive and does not think he is long term material. Plus, he has a crazy stalker who in the end shows his true colors.
Because there was more to this story than just the standard boy meets boy with some issues and falls in love at warp speed, I enjoyed it more. Both Eli and Jackson were likable, neither appearing to desperate and both just honestly wanting what was best for everyone.

This is book # 3 in The Mockingbird Place series. This book can be read as a standalone novel. It would be in the readers best interest, however, to read this series in order. This would add better understanding and enjoyment as the inside jokes in the book will make more sense.

Jackson and Eli live next door to one another. They are both attracted from afar. Jackson is concerned that Eli has other interests that make him a poor choice for a boyfriend. He also has low self esteem that gets in the way.

Eli is busy with his job and obligations to others he has promised. He also cannot stop wishing in his heart for a chance with Jackson. Can they make it work?

Eli and Jackson have really hot chemistry that leaps off the page! The character development is a little slow. I felt like it was a little hard to keep up at times, but this story does enhance the series and is a good read.

This as the title says is a tale about a fireman(Eli) who lives in unit C in an apartment block named Mockingbird Place. I have only read this book from the series and feel it would be better enjoyed if you read the other books in the series first as previous characters are involved in this book too. The book revolves around the growing attraction between Eli and Jackson who also lives in Mockingbird Place. The story has a bit of danger, a bit of mystery and a couple of twists which do keep your interest but, the relationship between Eli and Jackson seems kind of forced and rushed. I would have felt more into the story if the characters had more depth. The love scenes were kind of cold and rushed too fast. I feel the reader would warm to this couple if the book wasn't written with separate pov from Eli and Jackson. More detail would brought the book to life for me. I quite liked the story but it could be better.

OK your really quick PSA: This is part of a series, I do suggest that you read the previous books, as there are returning characters and all that jazz.

That being said, on to Eli and Jackson...

So this story starts with one of my personal nightmares, my house being on fire. Eli is the fireman in our story and he is a victim of arson. Jackson steps in being the good neighbor and invites Eli to stay with him. Eli comes with the baggage of Scott, an ex that doesn't want to let go.

Jackson has his own personal demons, and dealing with Eli's ex is not on his top priority list.

Can the two get over the issues they both have? Will they give love a chance or just walk away?

This was a good story, I did rather enjoy it but not as much as the previous stories. I give this 4 stars.

This was a first read for this author for me recommended by a friend, This is a brilliant story of going through life with a mental disorder and what it effects. Jackson is a student at Uni studying forensic psychology. After arriving home to his complex he sees smoke coming out of his neighbors Eli's unit and rushes in. Jackson has a crush on Eli but thinks his baggage and his OCD would be a mistake.
Eli is a fireman rescuing other peoples properties but when he becomes a victim of an arsonist himself he cant believe it. Who would do such a thing? Eli has problems of his own with his Ex boyfriend that cant take No as an answer..
A brilliant book I loved the funny banter scenes between Jackson and Eli. includes drama, danger and romance but things are not safe with an arsonist around..
