USA TODAY Bestselling author CHRISTI CALDWELL blames Judith McNaught's "Whitney, My Love!" for luring her into the world of historical romance. While sitting in her graduate school apartment at the University of Connecticut, Christi decided to set aside her notes and pick up her laptop to try her hand at romance. She believes the most perfect heroes and heroines have imperfections, and she rather enjoys torturing them before crafting them a well deserved happily ever after!
Christi makes her home in Charlotte, North Carolina where she spends her time writing her own enchanting historical romances, and baking surprisingly good cakes (almost 2 years in lockdown will do that) with her courageous son and twin daughters, each who with their daily antics provides limitless source material.

When one of my favourite authors returns to one of my favourite series I know I’m in for a treat – did it disappoint? A big fat no. I loved it. Andrew & Marcia are like chalk & cheese, he’s the wastrel, she's the innocent well behaved young lady until she's ruined. I loved their journey, the situations they found themselves in but most of all the chemistry between the pair. Another emotional roller coaster, which, of course, had me reaching for the hankies as well as laughing out loud. Another engrossing, enthralling read which I loved My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Yes Andrew was right. After being left at the altar, found out about the big secret and now having everyone look at her with pity, his words rang true. "You should feel free to do whatever you want." Marsha decided that is just what she would do. Stop trying to live to society's rules.
Andrew knew he was a lost cause. He drank to excess, gambled and was a rake. But he did not want Marsha to think for one minute he would help her "sin." No, he would not. No.
But then he began to realize she would try to get herself in trouble anyway and he would not let her do that. No. No he would not
A wonderful journey of healing and trying to find love, even when they did not know it!! Fantastic!!
Friends to lovers and marriage. Not my favourite CC story, although I do love The Heart of a Duke series. Just a little bit too long for me. Loved it for the most part though. 4☆
Amazing friends to lovers story with Miss Marcia Collins and Andrew Barrett, Viscount Waters. Marcia is left at the altar with scandal surrounding her. Her family and friends are trying to protect her, and one of her friends, Andrew, is recruited to help. These two have a wonderful relationship already, and the story of their journey to love is riveting. It seems telling each other their true feelings, or not, is going to be the difference. Couldn't put it down.
I loved the romance! Five stars for the romance, one star for the constant repetition of how unworthy the hero is and how pure and innocent the heroine is.
The friends to lovers story was written perfectly. The witty/realistic dialogue, the slow burn and realization that they desire each other, the honesty they shared in their feelings. I was able to buy all of it and consumed the book as fast as I could.
What I wish could have been edited out, or at least slimmed down, was the silly drama after the wedding. For one thing, the hero decides to become serious and business minded to properly take care of his new wife and future family, which demanded that he spend time in his office during the day. The heroine gets bent out of shape that her husband was not spending the whole day and night with her and that obviously meant he did not like her, etc. And then as Christi Caldwell likes to do, she takes the drama and makes sure you are updated and fully aware of every aspect each and every chapter. Maybe even each and every other paragraph... She write well, love her story telling, but just too much of rehashing inner turmoil and feelings of unworthiness.
I give this 4 stars⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. I would have given it a five if Marcia had met Virgil her half brother.
17. To Catch a Viscount MC H Andrew Barrett, Viscount Waters ( father passed) mother remarried with two younger siblings. His father was a bigamist. Marquess of Rutland Phoebe’s husband,Keeps close tabs on Andrew watching over him. He is also best friends with Marcus Gray. h Marcia Gray ( parents Eleanor and Marcus Gray , Viscount Wessex. When he wouldn’t pay them anymore they exposed Marcia’s parentage. So I started reading Christi Caldwell in 2013, read a few books and then didn't pick her up again faithfully until 2015. This is my 66th book by her.
Some of you that follow my reviews know I don't say much. I hate reading a book synopsis anymore because I want to be totally surprised about everything I'm reading. I don't want to know what the characters do, their story, nothing before I start reading. Since I pretty much read mostly authors I've read for years and love, I know it will be a good read anyway so I don't need to know what it's about. I noticed reading some folks reviews, they give away too much and I don't want to do that to someone looking at my review.
Most of you know, I read almost or over 400 books a year and some really great authors that are fabulous writers so that alone should tell you something. :)
Let me say, I LOVED this book. It was such a great read. Don't take my 2 days to read as an indication it was slow. I've been trying to catch up on "The Witcher" so spending hours at night drooling over Henry Cavill instead of reading.
Marcia and Andrew where such a great couple to read. I loved their story. I loved Marcia's relatives and their friends. It was just so well written. It always seems so ridiculous to me the "rules" the ton shuns people for, yet most of them are the worst sinners. I just love stories of perseverance.
The series has been around since 2015 and I have read everyone of them.
I would definitely recommend this book as well as all the others by Christi Caldwell.
Christi Caldwell is an amazing talent! Loved Andrew and Marcia’s book. Great storylines and a captivating mix of characters, both familiar and new. So excited to see this author bringing us more stories from The Heart of a Duke series!
I like "friends to lovers," and Christi Caldwell's done a good job with the trope in a few of her past novels/novellas, so I was really looking forward to this one. I haven't read all of the entries in this series, but was somewhat familiar with the characters from reading books 6 and 8, which were published several years ago. Book 8 featured the parents (including the biological father) of the h of this book, Marcia. The premise of this book sounds promising, as both Marcia and the H, Andrew, are dealing with their feelings about their tainted lineage. They are misfits of the ton.
Unfortunately, I simply didn't think this H/h had great chemistry. Andrew is supposed to be an old friend of Marcia's, but he really never behaves like a friend, especially during the first half of the book. Family members have to nag him to stand by her when she's going through the most challenging experience of her life, which didn't endear him to me. He's more like a childhood acquaintance who's had a longstanding attraction to her that he's tried to suppress, and he spends most of the book behaving like a jerk. He hangs out with his buddies, flirts with various wenches, broods about his dad, then puts himself down ad nauseum. I know he's supposed to grow up as part of his character arc, but his behavior gets old. More time is spent with the MC's thinking about how they got along as kids than interacting as equals who like and respect each other.
Marcia is a sympathetic character, but on the naive side, and I wanted her to confront Andrew sooner. There is an odd scene when she sees coldness in his eyes, but it's merely pushed aside and she doesn't rethink the physical aspect of their relationship. When she does finally confront him, it's over money, which always seems like a bit of a cop-out by authors. To me, this has become one of the most annoying aspects of the "marriage of convenience" trope, especially when it has to do with the H being strong-armed by other characters.
Some of the scenes seemed rushed or just don't quite flow. (A final aside, the word "bribe" is misused several times. I'm not sure why it wasn't called blackmail instead?)
Faith is an interesting character, however, and I look forward to her book.
Bottom line: I wanted to enjoy this, but the characters and their scenes together just didn't gel for me. The book really only becomes lively when Marcia is saved by ruffians who are acquainted with Andrew. I'd like this author to start incorporating more dry humor and banter, and get back to the basics that make romance novels fun.
DNF at 50%. I am so so shocked that in any of the reviews I read, no one mentioned how much discussion of SA happens. Like SO MUCH. I saw no content or trigger warnings. If it’s in a story I would prefer to know beforehand or not read it because it’s not for me. I was enjoying seeing how the heroine processed the information that happened and her inner thoughts. No romance. Just jealousy, evil doings and lust.
Viscount Waters, Andrew, finally gets his redemption story and it is perfect. I love the familiar characters in this story as well, Rutland in particular. This was simply another great addition to the series.
This was a really good story. I really enjoyed how both Marcia and Andrew were able to talk through and overcome their demons. I enjoyed their best friends to lovers story and enjoyed the steam as well. I will definitely re-read!
4.5 rounded to 5. Really enjoyed Andrew and Marcia’s love stories and very much liked them as people. The book kept a good pace. It didn’t blow my mind but it was a really great book!
Childhood friend and rake Andrew is just the man Marcia needs when her life and heart are broken. Marcia is just the woman Andrew needs to show him he is more than the man he believes himself to be. This book was full of all the delicious emotionally charged moments I have come to expect from a Christi Caldwell story, from heartbreak and tears to joy and laughter. I was given an advanced reader copy of this book which I voluntarily read and reviewed with my own honest opinion.
Have always loved this series, so seeing new books in it was wonderful. Marcia Grey is abandoned at the alter by Charles who she thought was the love of her life. Now shunned by society and feeling she can't become more ruined Marcia decides to live down to her reputation and visit places a proper young lady shouldn't. Andrew Barrett Viscount Waters, a childhood friend is picked to be her partner in crime. All goes well until Andrew and Marcia are found in a wicked club by her father. I loved this book, partly because it's about Andrew the last of the Waters family to find happiness, ( we've met his mother and both sisters in earlier books in the series), partly because we meet others we've seen in earlier books, and partly because I remember reading Marcia's parents book. Mainly it's good writing, and good plot. I want to know what happens to Atbrooke and his horrid sister.
PS I now find myself rereading the whole series now, hopefully I'll be up to date by the time the March book is released.
This may well be the best Christi Caldwell book I have ever read. The characters are complex, much of the dialogue is good, there's a few touches of humor, and there's considerable growth from all.
But for goodness sake, Ms. Caldwell, could you PLEASE employ the use of Grammarly? The tiny slips detract from what is a pretty great story. There's really not a good reason for a seasoned author in this day and age to ever be using "an" before a consonant, and "studiously studied" is ridiculously redundant. Just a little less volume and a little more accuracy would go a long, long way.
CUTEEEEE! I don't often read friends to lovers, but it's a wonderful trope to enjoy once in awhile. This was just so dreamy~~ Christi Caldwell's stories are often enjoyable, and this one is one of them.
ANDREW was an absolute rake, and pardon my language but quite a waste of space in society when he doesn't do anything productive but carousing, gambling and whoring. Like a typical gambler, he was also deep in debts. He seemed irresponsible and unreliable. Imagine the surprise when the girl he's known all his life turns to him as an accomplice for debauchery, and suddenly he developed a conscience. That pretty much tells us he isn't as bad as he seem. The poor fellow was merely pushed into his current disposition by something that happened with his sister and brother-in-law, the origins of his birth and how everyone expected him to behave depravedly. Naturally, he wielded the mantle as they called him - until getting reacquainted with Marcie. For everything Marcie, Andrew was an absolute softie, hooked, lined and sinker. Honestly, it took him THAT long to realize his feelings. Trust me, he'll change his ways - eventually, in way that you know he's not a bad person. He just needed someone to believe in him.
I adored their intimate moments - both in conversation and sexual nature. It's nice to see the awareness between friends who were once platonic and suddenly they were seeing each other in a new light.
MARCIE was a typical good girl. Once upon a time, a diamond of the first water, but suddenly thrusted into a "scandal" when the true nature of her conception was revealed, and being jilted at the altar? Well, that just ruins a woman's day and self-esteem. Tired of the pitiful looks and abject scorn from society, Marcie decides to embrace her "bad seed" side and wants to live up to the slanderous rumors about her parentage. Who better than Andrew to guide her in London's debauchery? Judging by her situation, Marcie was only hurt and wanted to lash out but also she was just confused about her identity. She was well loved by her family, never wanting for anything, so some might call her a selfish, pampered bred who truly didn't know the real sufferings of the world.
OVERALL perhaps some parts were farfetched, but this IS a fictional romance, and I enjoyed the chemistry + easy camaraderie between Andrew and Marcie. Their friendship was everlasting, and the passion between them...effortless. Ironically, Andrew and Marcie assumed they were their (bad) fathers' children, but unknowingly mirroring their thoughts whilst Andrew and Marcie only saw and brought out the good in each other. Nevertheless, sweet and encouraging. Nothing beats having a partner who appreciates your ups and downs, and has seen you at your lowest points.
Childhood Friends to Lovers is one of my all time fave trope, because love doesn’t hit our main couple with a lightening bolt… but they realize slowly over time their love has been building with each moment and memory!! That’s so much more romantic to me.
I was a little bit worried about Andrew. He had so much emotional baggage he needed to unload. But I love that he started evolving to be a better man for Marcia. I also love how possessive he was, even before he made Marcia his. That is sooooo YUM!!!
I wanted to hug Marcia!! Goodness, she was put through the wringer. I can’t say any spoilers, but my goodness… she also had to sort through a lot in order to find herself. I’m just so glad that Andrew was there to hold her hand every step of the way.
Some of the topics in this book were a little bit dark. But there were a lot of moments that I laughed out loud. Andrew and Marcia knew each other so well that I felt they were dancing in sync to their own private tune. They were such a joy to get to know.
My normal state after reading a Christi Caldwell book…. Ugly crying AF. This book was every thing I wanted… and MORE!!! It held my heart from the very beginning… then continued to squeeze all the feely-feels until the end. Absolutely wonderful read!!
Side note…I’m officially going to say that Benedict Adamson, the Earl of Wakefield’s book is my most anticipated!! I can not wait to see who will eventually win his heart!!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily review it and the comments are 100% my own.
My Star Rating: 5 stars Ugly cried AF. Major book hangover. Characters and storyline were freaken amazeballs. Made me wanna hug the author for writing a book that gave me all the feels!! Will definitely be reading this story over and over and over again!!
Another fabulous story from the brilliant Christi Caldwell featuring second generation characters. Although this book is part of her Heart of a Duke series it can be read as a stand-alone, with no prior knowledge of the series required, that being said new readers will want to go back to the beginning I am certain. Marcia, has always adhered to society’s rules and behaved as a proper young lady should that is, until her betrothed leaves her at the alter when the scandal of her past, which she had no knowledge of is revealed. Shamed and shunned by society, she decides to embark on an adventure to discover the dark and seedier parts of London. To do this she turns to her long time friend, Andrew infamous rake, gambler and drinker. At first he is reluctant to aid her, and tries to deter her but seeing she will do with or without him he concedes in a bid to prevent her from harm. During their time together they come to the realization that their pasts are not so different and present threats are linked. Ultimately they realize their feeling are more than friendship and are forced to make a decision to prevent further scandal. I love Christi’s character development, she takes secondary characters, who have faults and is able to find the hero or heroine in them. Andrew doesn’t believe he deserves happiness because of his odious father but Marcia and his fabulous brother-in-law Edmund, who makes such a welcome return make him see he does deserve a happy ever after. Marcia discovers she doesn’t need to live up to society’s standards and finds love and happiness with Andrew. Such a worthwhile read and like all Christi’s stories it left me wanting more. I received and reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book and this is my honest opinions and review.
Marcia and Andrew are friends, they have been for many years. When she’s left at the altar and with a ruined reputation through no fault of her own, she decides to live up to Society’s expectations and lead the dissolute life everyone expects from her. And she needs Andrew’s help… Because who better than a notorious rogue can help her walk the path of sin and debauchery? Even if he’s not so easily convinced of the soundness of her plan… As always, Christi didn’t let me down! This book is wonderfully written, with the right dose of angst and gorgeous character development. Marcia is strong and vulnerable at the same time and such an interesting, true-to-life character that I found myself suffering with her and cheering her on in her quest for a different life. But the character who steals the scene, so to speak, is undoubtedly Andrew, charming rogue and wastrel from the outside, but a tortured and totally sweet man in the inside, a three-dimensional character whom you can’t but love. I must confess that I didn’t read the previous books of the series that are connected to this one, but nevertheless this made for a good standalone, even if I was left with the curiosity to look for the intriguing characters that I found here and their own stories in the previous books. Because Christi’s books always leave me wanting for more… I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Let me start by saying this storyline did not disappoint and has made it to my top "this book makes me melt" list. Without giving anything away, Christi writes in a way that capture all human emotions. There were scenes in this book about trauma and the way trauma can affect the children involved, Christi captured the emotional turmoil one would expect from the re-telling or learning of the traumatic experience delicately and I felt all the same emotions as the characters. You could feel the pain and anguish, which is a sign that a story is able to connect to the reader's soul. On the romance side of Christi's writing, she is able to capture, those breathless first time kiss moments, with such exquisite detail that you find yourself with shivers down your spine, while melting into you couch, while fanning your face, and saying out loud "yes please". This storyline was beautiful, the hero and heroine did not disappoint. This is a perfect story to read while curled up in a blanket and it will make you eager to read more of Christi's books. And in my case, it will also make you go back and re-read the stories of all the other characters again because you are reminded of just how good you feel when you read all of Christi's books.
marcia was waiting at the altar when she learned her groom wouldn’t be showing up. a scandal involving her birthright broke before she could marry charles, and though she wanted to retreat from the world, her parents and friends pushed her to stop wallowing in guilt and self-blame. marcia, realizing she was already branded as scandalous, decided to embrace the very sins polite society ignored. to do this, she turned to her friend, andrew. viscount waters is infamous for his wicked ways—gambling, promiscuity, and a knack for finding the hidden spots in town. initially, andrew refused to help, but once he realized marcia might turn to others, he agreed without hesitation.
their journey from friends to lovers is set against a backdrop of troubled family legacies. both of their lineages come with baggage, which deeply affects their actions and choices. while the premise has a lot of potential, i do wish their friendship had been more developed. it felt like there was still an emotional distance between them, even though they were supposed to have known each other for years before this.
Marcia Gray's world comes crumbling down around her on what should be the happiest day of her life. Distraught and confused, she turns to the one person she thinks can help her live the life she now believes is her only option. Andrew Barrett, Viscount Waters, has lived his life in the shadow of a faithless, ruthless father and believes it his to own. Together, two lifelong friends begin to show each other that they are not who they believe they are and that the sins of others are not their own. This story is heartbreaking and inspiring as they find their way together. Christi Caldwell tells a story of hope found for two wonderful young characters who thought there was none. We relive some of the tragedy of Eleanor and Marcus' story, and Andrew's family history as we see two young people struggle to find hope and love. This is a must read for any Christi Caldwell fans, as well as anyone looking for hope found. It's also a great read if you're looking to heat up a cold winter's day!
Wonderful story about a young woman, Lady Marcia Grey, who is jilted on her wedding day at the altar for reasons beyond her control. As a result of the humiliating debacle, Marcia decides she has been a "good girl" all for nothing, and she may as well have a good time experiencing life on the wild side. She enlists her long time family friend Lord Andrew Barrett, Viscount Waters, to assist her in this new endeavor. While this noted rake is a reluctant co-conspirator in her plan, he goes along for reasons of his own. His acquiesce to her request is what leads them both down the merry path.... This plot is interesting, and has more than one conflict they must face. (One particular conflict is of a serious nature, and the thoughtfulness in which the author addressed it is well done.) The characters are colorful , as both the H and h have a set of loyal, entertaining friends; and both are surrounded by interesting people. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.
I never write a spoiler review, but with this story I wish I could! We meet (again) Marcia, a young woman who was ready to be married. But on that day, her life changes irreparably. We meet Andrew, a long time friend, whose life has been influenced by his wastrel, bigamist father. This story follows the turmoil and challenges that face these young, innocent people. Marcia is a strong, confident young woman who is devastated by the reality of her birth, but her strength moves her forward. Andrew just doesn’t think much of himself and believes he can only be the rake that he is, until he doesn’t. I just can’t tell you how heartbreaking and how wonderful this story is. The supporting cast will capture your heart too because they are the best kind of relatives and friends. The villain is horrible and I can’t wait for him to get what he deserves…soon I hope!
When I read a Christ Caldwell book, I know from the start that it will have a great storyline and wonderful, complex characters. I’ve not been disappointed yet! I will admit, however, that I was not so endeared to the hero, Andrew, at the beginning, being a total wastrel, and acting proud of it. He accepted that’s how he was and nothing could change him. Marcia on the other hand, had always done everything right, until falling into disfavor with the ton through no fault of her own. The pair had been friends from childhood and had a special camaraderie so when Marcia decides to live a life of debauchery, he’s not about to let her go off without him. The two end up in all sorts of situations, so unpredictable that I never knew what to expect from one page to the next. A very entertaining and delightful book!
To Catch a Viscount, book 17 of Christi Caldwell’s Heart of a Duke series is fantastic! I just fell in love with the story of Marcia Grey and Andrew Barrett, Viscount Waters. It was wonderful to be back in the Heart of a Duke world, and see favorite characters from previous books, and their children grown and become young ladies. And to see Andrew Barrett, finally come into the man he was meant to be, believing himself a good and worthy many and not a wasted like his father. The added element of intrigue thrown in, makes Marcia and Andrews love, all the more poignant, because it is hard won! This story like all of Christi Caldwell’s books, pull you in, and make you feel so much. It is that, which makes this story the best one yet, in the world of the Heart of a Duke!
Andrew/Waters- dad was a despicable wastrel, womanizer and a terrible gambler. Marcia Gray- birth resulted from a rape and her biological paternal family is using that info to gain money.
I enjoyed reading this friends to lovers story that is well written with developing characters. They were childhood friends but in adult life has taken different paths, he's following his fathers (feels he has too) and she a respectable lady -until she was stood up at the alter. I like how the necklace played a part and her moms reactions to it. This marriage of convenience due to scandal or prevent one had their friendship tested but love was the result. Their story has a loving and romantic HEA.
I received an this story as an ARC and I am giving my honest opinion/review.
Marcia and Andrews story is the perfect edition to the Heart of a Duke series. Have you heard the Rogues make the best Husband’s? Marcia’s life and reputation are turned upside down on her wedding day of all days! If Marcia’s reputation is ruined, she might as well have some fun and explore the wickedness of London Society, right? Well, maybe not if Andrew, Viscount Waters has anything to say about it. He might not be interested in marrying his long-time friend but he won’t let her embark on her crazy plan alone. The reader will learn some rather interesting and risqué tidbits about our Hero and Heroine. Come along on this crazy ride and see if the Heart of the Duke necklace can work it’s magic one more time. I received this ARC in advance for a fair and honest review
