Murder. Corruption. A race for power. Exiled from the career she loved, former prosecutor Jessie Black feels lost. Fighting for victims and their families gave her purpose and fulfillment as a homicide prosecutor. Her new role as a criminal defense attorney only brings anxiety and doubt. Then the District Attorney, Damon Faber, is arrested on corruption charges. The city needs a new DA, and Jessie sees an opportunity - not just to return to the DA’s Office, but to lead it. But Jessie soon discovers that the cutthroat world of Philadelphia politics pales in comparison to an even more sinister threat. Something festered during Faber’s reign - a deadly conspiracy involving the city’s rich and powerful. And the last person they want as DA is Jessie Black. The city desperately needs a District Attorney with the courage to put justice above politics. Will Jessie answer the call, even if it makes her the next target?
Many times a series gets boring after the first few books, but Larry Winters has kept this one fresh and interesting. Jessie Black gets back to being a prosecutor and attempts to clean up after the former DA is imprisoned for all of the crimes he committed. It’s exciting and keeps you turning the pages to see what happened next. Very enjoyable and I look forward to the next installment. I did receive this as an advanced reader copy (ARC) but give my review honestly and freely.
When the current DA is arrested Jessie sees an opportunity to return to the prosecutors office even tho she doesn’t like the politics involved with the job. Will she decide to go for it? There is a lot of corruption involving some of the cities most powerful. Can they discover who is killing people before there are more bodies. This is a fast paced legal thriller, I read it in one sitting. The book is part of a series but could easily be read as a stand alone.
I have been an ardent fan of Jessie Black ever since I read Grave Testimony and Burnout, the prequel and Book 1 in the Jessie Black series. I have every book in the series in my digital library. Some of them I have read multiple times. I have watched grow as the fearless prosecutor, giving her all to find justice for the victims of the dregs of society. I watched in grave sorrow as she was forced to resign as a prosecutor by a corrupt DA and cheered when she took him down. I watched her become a defense attorney, when in her heart she wanted to prosecute them, not defend them. I knew in my heart that Jessie Black would be back as a prosecutor even before Winters announced that he was writing Return of The Prosecutor.
Return of The Prosecutor is perhaps the best book in the series to date we watch Jessie fight her hatred of politics to become the interim DA. We watch and cheer her on as she takes on some of the most powerful and influential members of society to take down the hit-and-run driver that left a little girl to die in the street. She risks everything, her new position as interim DA, her life, and her husband’s life, to find justice for a grieving mother.
All the Jessie Black books can be read and enjoyed as standalone novels, except, perhaps for this one. The hit and run driver and all the powerful people perpetrating the cover up are in jail awaiting their day in court, this Storey doesn’t end there. It ends with the opening for Last Stand. Return of The Prosecutor and Last Stand could be part 1 and part 2 of one book. Last Stand is already up on Amazon, and I strongly recommend buying and downloading both at the same time. Like all the Jessie Black books, they are on KU as well.
I received an ARC and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
The story begins with the murder of a detective. This is a lead into future events. A few days later, Jessie is trying to make a decision whether to apply for the Interim D.A. that has become open since the original was arrested and was awaiting trial. Jessie is later approached by Roly to not apply. When Jessie went to talk to Roly he advised her to not apply or she would be blackmailed. Hearing this, Jessie decided then and there that she would apply. Jessie was getting assistance through Jesus Rivera her mentor and former boss brought in individual political specialist to run her campaign. Their suggestions were ones that Jessie didn't think was appropriate. As an example, Jessie did an interview with a reoirter and later met with a member of the town commission. The results of this day were not good. Soon it was time to present herself to the group who was making the decision of who would be selected. In the end Jessie was the winner.
Jessie first act was to discover what Roly and the dead detective were working on. As she learned more, the individual that was responsible for killing the event got word and then both Leary and Jessie became a target. Jessiiie wth other people's assistance finally figured out who the mastermind was.
To discover what event Jessie pursued and who was behind and what involvement the mastermind had, then you need to read this book. It is definitely a winner.
Return of the Prosecutor and Last Stand are the latest in this intriguing who done it series. With just enough legal and court procedures to educate you but not bore you this series rocks. Every story is different but at the same time the themes of dedication to the law and catch the bad guy permeate the whole series. Usually after several books in a series the author runs out of new ideas and characters become cliche. Not with.Larry Winters. From the very first chapter of book one til the last chapter of Last Stand I was riveted to the story lines. I hope you enjoy this series as much as I did. Mr Winters is an outstanding writer.
Jessie Black and Mark Leary once again entertain and challenge us in a fast paced legal thriller. Jessie decides to apply for the Interim DA position when the corrupt DA loses his position and his freedom due to his criminal activities. A complex situation with multiple murders will not let Jessie Black rest until she brings justice to those who have lost their lives far too soon. You won’t want to put this latest Jessie Black legal thriller down until you reach the end.
Defense attorney-ing never sat well with Jessica Black, so when the DA gets murdered, Jessie decides to run for interim DA. Even though it's an office that plays politics, Jessie seeks it out with a promise to clean up the DA's office of corruption. The further she digs the more horror she finds .. Follow along in a fun filled ride to see Jessie restore faith and fortitude in the DA's office!
Such a fast paced, edge of the chair, book. As always, Jessie Black & Mark Leary make an incredible pair. Faced with insurmountable obstacles, they must find the answers before another murder takes place. This entire series draws you in for a glimpse of the underbelly of society that they deal with. I recommend this book, highly, and the entire series as well.
The Jessie Black series is one of my favorites, and a new installment in that series is always highly anticipated. This one definitely does not disappoint!! Being from the area described in these books, I appreciate the place nane references and little nuances as well. Cannot wait for the next installment....please don't make us wait another year!!!
Book 10 continues the saga of prosecutor Jessie Black. The book was fast paced and kept me anxious to see what happened next. Definitely looking forward to the next novel. Spoiler Alert ...the author borrowed a page from Dallas leaving us with a real cliffhanger as the book concluded.
Jessie and Leary are back! Justice will be served when this couple are hard at work to solve a hit and run of a little girl. They go to all lengths to ensure the driver and and anyone else involved are arrested. So many surprises await them along the way. Such a good book!
Always enjoy Jessie Black books, very suspenseful and keeps you guessing until the end. Would definitely recommend this book to all mystery and suspense readers.
WOW! This is a fast paced story. The characters are still very interesting and the storyline is compelling. I have read all of the Jessie Black books and I still love them.
I have loved every book in this series. There are twists and turns to keep you guessing. I enjoy a series that keeps several of your characters in ongoing roles that keep expanding.
Jessie and Leary are back together fighting murder, corruption and blackmail in the city. Jessie is elected interim DA and begins to clean it out. Exciting throughout and they both suffer physically and emotionally in their battle for the truth.
It's so good to read Jessie back in action. And I do mean action. There is plenty of hard hitting action to keep the reader engaged. And the plot twist s keep you guessing. Another first rate hit for Larry Winters.
This is an excellent book to read! One of Larry’s best! I’ve read all the Jessie Blacks’s novels and this is my favorite so far! Keep them coming, Larry!
My first with this author! I enjoyed the deception and final clarity. Will read the next one, hoping for more exciting twists and turns... As you can read, I don't do book reviews but enjoyed
I enjoyed this book. As usual Jessie and Leary kept you thinking of where it was going next and who really did the crime?? But kudos to Jessie she hangs in there until she finds out.
Jessie Black is back to her former job as a prosecutor, but in a slightly different situation. Excellent book with Larry A. Winters' superb characters. Check it out.
Love Jessie Black. This book was exciting and I didn’t want to put it down. This book solved some plot lines and opened more. Hurry with the next book.
I have enjoyed this whole series. The plot has twists and turns and returns with the same characters as previous novels. My only complaint is the book was too short!
This author is in my top ten of authors. I suggest you start with the first book in the series and go from there. I promise it won't be a waste of time.
