Out of the blue, a young Space Fleet officer's dream becomes He's made captain of a starship. Just in time for the return of humanity's most terrible enemy, after 50 years of peace.
To survive against this enemy, Captain Tad Thatcher will have to do more than learn how to become an effective commander or how to wrangle his wayward crew. He will need to reinvent space combat. From scratch.
We hope you like space battles. Buckle up for Spacers, the military sci-fi series you've been waiting for. Download this six-book bundle today.
I survived the first five books and said the hell with book six. The books are okay, but not really all that interesting. The author goes from battle to battle adding just enough plot to support each decision.
I wasn't attached to any of the characters. The characters were BORING.
I will say that you get a lot of reading for a very low price, but it isn't all that well done.
This is one of those series that goes on and on and never really gets anywhere. Getting too boring? Kill a character. Need that character later, no problem, bring them back with some insane side story.
Just don’t. It has the absolute hands down worst ending in the history of literature! No closure, no completion, no answers. Space opera for 9 and a half books. Then a metaphysical rushed cluster fluff of an conclusion. It’s so bad he had to add an authors note defending it.
Solid space opera with some nice twists and good character development.
Actually, I am on Book #5 in this set. Getting into Scott Bartlett's Spacer universe by way of a six-book bundle for less than $1.00 CDN was a real bonus for me. Bartlett's stories operate within the space opera genre, with space battles, missiles, lasers, selfless marines willing to put their lives on the line and an implacable alien enemy (and simultaneously, many human opponents as well). But it also sports an ever-shifting alignment and re-alignment of corporate entities, where bitter opponents can be honest in their dealings, and alliances are always on the verge of disaster because of lies and subterfuges on the part of their participants. Bartlett has created a unique environment with his own spin on military technologies, forcing his main character - Captain Tad Thatcher - to create, revise, implement and re-evaluate original tactics that give his ships and crews the chance to survive where conventionally understood tactics are doomed to failure. Having six novels in hand lends itself to a glorious binge reading where the reader doesn't have to fear that when one books ends, the reader must wait until the next one comes out. At least with respect to the first six books in the Spacer series. Totally satisfying, by my taste. And, Fleet Action (Book #7) and Dawn War (#8) just went on sale at $.99 apiece, and I immediately purchased them. And the adventure will continue.
I'm just part way through the story but here's my initial impression. The main character is annoying, irritating, whiney, and obnoxious. He's supposed to be a brilliant military mind but then he whines like a lovesick 12-year-old girl. His mental state is so fragile that he apparently will fall to pieces and give up if something happens to his wife but on the flip side is able to send crewmates and himself on missions that may get them all killed without a second thought. What sort of mental disorder does he suffer from? It feels like the main character's personality changes radically to suit the author's needs for that particular scene rather than being a fully fleshed-out character.
And I've ordered the next in the series! Have to see how it all ends. I only wish there wasn't so much death and destruction! It is possible to imagining that psychotic people like the major characters in the future depicted in these stories will exist.... After all... They have always existed. But how disgusting to think that corporate profit out weighs the defence of humanity!!!
Bit on the slow side to start and a bit repetitive at times, however thats all the negative comments out of the way. Once it starts going it just doesn't stop. Great cast of characters Thatcher, Rose and supervillain Simon Moll are larger than life the Alien threat is weird to say the least add to the mix a bit of time travel and Pirate activity and you have a grand read 👍😁
If you like Military Science fiction at the fleet level, you should have a look this series. The author does a good job with his universe building and the interplay between the various military arms of the corporations is interesting. The books move at a good pace and keeps you motivated to keep reading.
This was another great series by Scott Bartlett. Many twists and several surprises. The characters were well developed and the story was fast paced. Lots of space combat action. I have all of the books in this universe that Scott has created and I'm looking forward to starting the next series in this set. I highly recommend this series.
Wow, I feel so angry I wasted money on these books. I read all ten. In the last book the author gets pretty religious preachy fyi but also the ending is easily the worst ending I've ever read in a series, literally undoing the entire series timeline. the first 6 books were great. loved them, but after that is just got worse and worse. Never recommend.
Good guys with the usual human foibles, like honor, and bad guys representing the worst of humanity, all dancing to the tune of an extra-dimensional alien threat.
Attention getting Bartlett starts out strong with premise though not original he manages to weave a solid well paced story . but tends to . bog down in minutia but I still recommend the book though toward the end it gets somewhat boring and very predictable!
Long and gets longer. This is the NEVER ENDING storyline. Now that I've finished 6 books I find out there are 3 more. Too long, to wordy and just too much. 3 out of 5, save some words for some other novels.
I have read this over the past several months. It's been a superb action thrilled thought-provoking space opera. If you're looking for something that will keep you going this six books will make it so well worth your time.
I finished, as I probably won’t continue with the future additions. It held my interest, but at times it seemed to drag on. The action was just like the Army hurry up and wait. Then for 20% of the time it was pedal to the metal. Thanks for the entertaining read.
First Command: The Spacers Series 6-Book Box Set. Military style conflict with adapted enemy alien drones. Purchased this 3 book series from Amazon for $0.99. Read with the Alexa audio assist application. Purchased this edition on October 16, 2023.
Great book series but got to the end of the "box set" only to find there were 3 more books. This to me is not a box set. A box set is the complete story. Very disappointed Scott.
This box set brings together the meteoric rise of Captain Tad Thatcher. His first commission, expecting a son with his beautiful wife Lin, life is good. But suddenly after 50 years, war came. The Xanthic, an insect-like alien had resurfaced from underground where they would hibernate. Thrown onto his starship the New Jersey, with a seasoned crew who resented what they called arrogance in their new Captain, was ready to save the world. Or does the Xanthic have other plans for Captain Tad Thatcher? Scott Bartlett weaves a military sci-fi story like no other writer. This brilliant collection is proof. If you like fast-paced military stories, you're sure to enjoy it.
