A Commentary on the Book of Genesis, Part Two: From Noah to Abraham

Rate this book
Part Two covers Genesis 6:9-11:32. The Appendix is the beginning of Part Three, Abraham and the Promised Land, on Genesis 12-17, but Cassuto died in the course of his work thus we only have fragments of his remaining comments.

The aim of this commentary is to explain, with the help of an historico-philological method of interpretation, the simple meaning of the biblical text, and to arrive, as nearly as possible, at the sense that the words of the Torah were intended to have for the reader at the time they were written.

This is not an easy read. I have very limited knowledge of Hebrew so some of my reading was necessarily skimming. That being said, Cassuto had a very valuable insight into such important stories. I wish we had the rest of his commentary on genesis. I would recommend this to anyone who takes an interest in higher criticism in Genesis.
