Memoirs of Being an Omega #1

The Exception to the Rule

Rate this book
Violet Dawson loves her job as an event planner at Hughes Publications. She's spirited, independent, and definitely not your typical Omega. She's determined not to be drawn to the gorgeous Theodore Chamberlin, senior editor and company Alpha asshole. She hates him. Truly she does, even when he smells like heaven on earth.

They are thrust together to plan an event, and all seems to go well until Violet's workspace floods, and they have to share an office.

What will become of them when their close proximity causes Violet to go into heat? Can they put aside the experiences that have made them guard their hearts? Or are their differences too much for them to find true love?

The Exception to the Rule is the first book of the Series, Memoirs of Being an Omega, which follows four Omegas - Violet, Rachel, Alex, and Mia - in their quest for true love.

THE EXCEPTION TO THE RULE has all my favorite flavors ... or rather, scents ... when it comes to Omegaverse stories.

Office romance
Forced proximity
Subverting designations
Breakthrough heats
Obliviousness and hesitations
... and 🦋

A note, y'all will wanna have a basic understanding of Omegaverse vocabulary before getting into this but(!) it's also a very nice place to start because at its heart EXCEPTION is a classic contemporary office romance with demihuman mating imperitives.

Violet and Theo have the classic first day as coworkers misunderstanding of he avoids her because he's so attracted to her and she thinks he's an asshole for his avoidance. Add a splash of forced to work on a project in close proximity with eachother and its classic romance done with the biological need to mate when you find someone you're so compatible with their scent comforts you. Yanno, the yuzh.

Highly recommend for a novella length starter Omegaverse story. Or for readers wanting a meaty morsel of spicy goodness. Its the perfect compact romance. Loved it muchly.

Initial Thoughts Post-Completion:
Hot, steamy, sexy: absolutely everything that you want in a rom-com wrapped and written wonderfully.

Review:
Alpha, Beta, Omega (A/B/O) dynamics and rom-com? Yes, please!
As my initial thoughts summarize, this book had it all with the steam, the spice, and everything (naughty) and nice. I always love reading a workplace romance, and this absolutely delivered.

This story followed Violet and Theo, the main girl and guy characters respectively, and you’d think their first meeting goes as well as two extremely compatible people would. Spoilers: horribly. But not to fear! If not feelings, their work assignment will bring them closer, whether they want it or not.

While certain concepts of this book are of a fantasy flavor, the author brings an honest feeling to the characters and their narrative. Little details in scenes or descriptions bring a vivid story to life, and makes it easy to imagine the story playing out. I loved the bits where clothes were described, or settings were described allowing the reader to have a clear image of what was happening.

Considering the characters, I absolutely loved them. I know that’s an unhelpful statement but I just loved them immediately. Despite the “alpha” label and all its connotations, the characters are fleshed out beyond what the reader’s initial thought of them would be. Quite honestly, I thought they’d all be unyielding and rude and everything someone wouldn’t want to deal with, but no, the author subverted my expectations, and I was all here for it. Thinking of the “omega” label, these characters go beyond societal convention, and let you know they’re more than their designation.

As for the romance (*mother gothel voice*), they were charged, electric, stunning, show-stopping, never been done before. If you want the absolute force of feelings that a hate-to-love-esque tale can bring you, this is the book to read. While fast-paced and exciting, the book also gives its fair share of slow and soft intimate moments, really digging into the romance of it all, which gives a great reading experience.

I loved this book, and as the first of the series, the author sets up a wonderful world and I can’t wait to dive into the other stories within it!

Rounding up to four stars but I’d say this is a 3.5 for me personally.

It was an okay read for me. Just a bit middle of the road. I wasn’t obsessed with Theo and didn’t love Violet unfortunately so it made it harder to love the book. But I read it all and enjoyed it enough. If you like omega verse books, you might enjoy this one. I’m just not super familiar with that type of book.

Violet and Theo had a rough start, so when they get thrown together I just knew sparks would fly! I love how detailed the author is in everything from setting up the scene, to the smells and tastes the characters have. First of a series can be daunting as the author starts to create a new world for us to visit. All the tiny details Ms. Ambrose shares help you to really understand the roles these Alpha and Omegas, even Betas have. Theo was really brought out of his shell, and Violet was full of humor when they have to deal with a breakthrough heat! The intimacy these two have was electric, and leaves you wishing you had your own Alpha! I love all the story’s supporting cast of characters, leading hopefully to many more Omegas to fall for! Really appreciated the attention to detail of each character so you “know” they are a vital part of this story. Amazing first book, and excited for the next ones!

Overall rating: 2/10

Synopsis: An event planner falls for a senior editor, someone she hates, but ends up loving him about 1.5 seconds

- I read the wrong book (meant to read the Christina Lauren one) I thought it was going to be an innocent romantic comedy, only to be later confused af and find out its set in the Omegaverse
- didn't realize it was a fan-fic until the pre-chapter notes
- too rushed, fast storyline, lacks depth
- no worldbuilding
- omegaverse, enemies to lovers, spicy, horrible plot

A delightful gateway Omegaverse romance (gateway for me, anyway) with an office setting, meddling but well-minding friends, and frenemies to lovers theme. Looking forward to the next story in the series.

The main characters were super cute. I was on pins and needles, waiting for the moment they finally came together. Fun, quick, and easy read.

Very sweet comfort book that I needed right now. It was short, but made me feel like I was curdled up in a warm cozy blanket in front of a fireplace when it's raining outside.

Are you looking for a spicy A/B/O with rom-com elements? Then look no further than The Exception to the Rule!

What happens when our main character meets a very handsome Alpha? An immediate connection? Or a turn of events that turns these two into almost enemies-to-lovers or, what I love to say: idiots-to-lovers.

Violet is wonderfully assertive, funny, and determined not to let her designation as an Omega stop her from anything.

Then there’s our Alpha Theo… He’s not what I was expecting, and I LOVE him! I’m not going to spoil anything about him, but the author made me feel for the guy, even though he’s a bit standoffish at first.

Try as she might, Violet pines for him, but does Theo feel the same?

I loved the twists and turns we got before our Alpha and Omega got together. The author did an incredible job explaining the A/B/O elements and what our characters are feeling throughout the story. I felt for all the characters in this story as our lovers made their journey in a fun-paced story that left you wanting more in a good way. The Exception to the Rule is a wonderful start to the author’s upcoming series.

1.5

Things I liked: I really loved how they both were experiencing a heat for the first time together. It was endearing.

Other than that, this book just wasn't for me. The writing felt flat to me and I somewhat wish that it was dual POV. I also felt like we didn't need the reminder that I was reading an omegaverse book every five seconds. Them addressing each other as Alpha and Omega left me more annoyed than me finding it touching or endearing or however the author intended the audience to feel when we read them. I truly just felt like I was being told that they were in love than rather watching them actually fall in love on the page.

I received an Advanced Reading Copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I loved everything about this story. The characters were endearing. The pacing was wonderful. So many wonderful little details. I won't spoil them but they were great. What I really loved about this book was that there was no misunderstanding/noncommunication that causes a breakup at the end of so many romance books. The characters actually talk things out and come to an understanding.
