Unperfect #2

Unworthy

Rate this book
Unreliable, irresponsible, unpredictable, unaccountable —Yaz knows how her family view her. She was never like them though, never academic enough, never serious enough, never really good enough.
But he was different.
Heath was the one who stuck up for Yaz when she was a child. As her brother’s best friend and ten years older, he had been her hero—always defending her to her family, always seeing the best in her—he made her feel worthy of approval.
But as her childhood adoration morphed into full-blown teenage love for her idol, and Heath grew from the good-looking boy she knew to the devastatingly handsome emergency department doctor he is today, his attitude seemed to change. For some reason, her quirks went from charming to annoying—her alternative world view from refreshing to ridiculous. In fact, there are a lot of things about her Heath seems to now find
“You look ridiculous, Midge.”
“All this alternative therapy crap is a ridiculous waste of time.”
“Your obsession with windsurfing is getting ridiculous.”
“That ridiculous bike of yours is a bloody health hazard. When are you going to grow up and get a car?”
Having gone from worthy to unworthy in Heath’s eyes, Yaz convinces herself that his cruelty has killed her childhood crush. After one humiliation too many, she finally cuts ties altogether. By the time Heath starts to see all that he could lose, it might be too late. Maybe it’s not Yaz who’s the unworthy one after all?

Full-length, brother's best friend, secret crush, unrequited love, enemies-to-lovers contemporary romance.

I know I am just being a fickle bitch, but I am just not getting into this story. I love asshole heroes, and this Hero is definitely an asshole, but he's acting like one for no reason at all. Just to be a douche. I hate him the way I'm supposed to, but I also don't care what happens to him at the same time. And I don't care enough to keep investing my time in this story.

I read this out of order as Unperfect comes before this.

Doesn't matter because "Aaaaargh!" The same things drove me crazy in both books.

Yaz is a manic-pixie mermaid as she LOVES the sea and alternative healing etc. She's diminished by her practical parents and loving brother. They mean well, I guess, but put her down constantly then laugh it off.

The H is just out and out mean as he denigrates her whole lifestyle and belief system. Silently adoring heroine + Mean hero = Standard Susie Tate fare. I'm not complaining because it's very well done. The H and his twin sister have a horrific backstory to explain why the H is so ridiculous about Yaz's so called scattiness. It's believable and Tate has the heroine do a 180 as she decides she simply can't trust the hero, and she actually lays into her family for a well deserved scolding. The hero has some serious digging to do to get his girl.

I kind of bought it, but I'm now reading Unperfect and I'm mad at the parents and Heath all over again.

Still a 3 star Susie Tate is still better than most of the dribble out there.

3.5 stars. This is a brother’s best friend trope with good grovel and angst. The only reason I rated it lower than 4 stars is that it doesn't have that extra special something that makes me obsessed with a story or characters enough to give it 4 or 5 stars. But, it’s not bad at all.

Yaz, who’s in her mid 20s, has a 10 year age gap with her brother’s best friend, Heath. She grew up in love with him. He was always nice to her as a kid, but when she was a teenager, he grew distant (out of guilt for feeling attracted to her). He’s a doctor, and due to an unstable upbringing, he literally has a checklist of what he’s looking for in a woman (reliable, college educated, career oriented, etc). Yoga and crystal loving surfer Yaz doesn’t fit his criteria. He’s a dick to her for a while, sneering at her interests, and he even puts her down in front of other people. One night, they sleep together and he’s like, “Well, I guess we might as well be a couple now." This is obviously very insulting to her. So, she shuts him out of her life.

It had never occurred to me that she would turn me down. I was beginning to see that the way I’d acted, not just today but over the last few years, had probably killed her feelings for me. Just as I was coming round to the fact that she was the woman meant for me, she was concluding that I was the last man on earth she would want to be with.

From there, this is a grovel book. The grovel is mostly him apologizing for his past behavior and also standing up to her parents on her behalf (since they’re also condescending about her interests) plus doing actions like showing up for her, being there for her, and helping her at various points.

We also learn more about his past to explain his behavior This book ALMOST took a detour into using his past trauma to let him off the hook. But it just managed to avoid doing that, since he really DID own up to his shit.

The steam could have been better. That's another reason this is 3.5 stars, it's nearly "fade to black." But otherwise, if you just want an angsty read with decent characters, grovel, and an interesting setting (the world of windsurfing and also medicine in England), this hits the spot.

The power of words can make people miserable. This story was so good and emotional that I may have teared a bit (ok a lot).

Not for me, I really disliked Heath and the heroines whole family. They were terrible to the heroine and even after being reprimanded and told they were being terrible they kept putting their foot in their mouth and I got tired of it.

I actually liked when it looked like the heroine was ready to stand up for herself. Honestly, I wish she went no contact and left them behind, but I knew that was not going to be the case which is why I stopped. I also did not like the direction it was possibly going

ha, I usually have a "hit or miss" case with this author's books, meaning I either very much like them or don't...
This one I loved, or very much liked...the H is a bastardly prick-ish at first towards the heroine (whom I adored, simply bravo! - cause this author has a tendency of portraying the heroines as weak actually disguising them as shy and introvert BUT they don't look like that to me while reading, so, there's gotta be a big issue with the actual portrayal and use of the words in their description)

BUT this one, I loved, Yazmin/Yaz aka Midge is a free spirit, wild and unbound and to everyone around her she seems reckless, loose and unreliable...when she's all BUT that...and it will take time for everyone to see, to open their eyes and look beyond the conventional....especially the H - Heath, who had his share of bad childhood experiences and is looking for everything that Yaz isn't...

And yet again, the heart wants what the heart wants, you just need to let the brain catch up...*wink*

I forgot how much I love Susie Tate's books. I've read all of her earlier works and, though I loved them all, I can really see how her writing has grown. She's just superb!

I wanted an angsty romance where the FMC emotionally withdraws after the MMC treats her like shit, and well… I forgot that meant I’d probably need to hate the MMC for a while. Every time free spirited Yaz was misjudged and hurt again and again by Heath… ugh. I’m glad she stood her ground when he started to grovel. I’m not sure if he fully redeemed himself by the end, but I liked that he knew how lucky he was to be with her.

I guess that’s the long way of saying this made me feel things.

The MMC is a condescending asshole throughout the entirety of the book. I mean, apparently, his reason for being an asshole was that he started liking her too much when she was 16. He's 10 years older people. Why is a 26 year old looking at a 16 year old like that?!?! And the only way to stop feeling those feelings were to constantly put her down and make her cry? Weird ass man.

I was also promised grovelling booktok, where is it !!!!!

Ok hear me out
This was bad… I just can’t get over the amount of times Heath put his foot in his mouth with horrible words towards Yaz. Even after he realises his feelings Add to that the way her family treats her this poor chick cops a bashing. BUT she is strong and there’s no BBS in sight which was what gave it that extra 1/2 star.

After seeing Yaz and Heath interact in Unperfect, I was worried about their dynamic in this one. Brother’s best friend tropes aren’t normally my favorite because they tend to come with a very emotionally whipped heroine that lets the guy get away with way too much.

Enter Yaz and Heath. I loved Yaz. Her free spirit and kind heart had me concerned she would give Heath all the excuses for the way he’d treated her, but instead she had a steel spine and stood up for herself. I loved how her family slowly grew to appreciate and value Yaz’s lifestyle.

Heath’s backstory was such a great way to humanize him as well, even if it was heart-wrenching to learn about. It was another opportunity to him to discovery how reliable Yaz was, and their love shining through despite their differences held this book together for me.

Side note: Mia finding her voice after her past and standing up for Yaz against Max and Heath’s relentless teasing was SO SWEET. I adore hers and Yaz’s friendship.

I just couldn’t relate to the leads at all. And I found Yaz hippy personality kinda pick me. Heath was a huge douche but yeah he was more tolerable in my opinion.
I literally stopped bc I couldn’t stay the dynamic from her partners and everyone around her with her issue of surfing but I guess in a real life kinda situation she would be considered a bum. Would not recommend

This one had so much potential to be a real grovel fest. The H misjudges the h and it is fun to watch him be proven wrong. I’m not quite sure why, but all of the elements didn’t fall into place. 2 3/4 stars.

I like the theme of unrequited to requited love and this started strong then it just fizzled out. I didn’t connect to Heath and Yaz and started skimming so decided to give up.

★★★★.5. I loved this book. I loved Yaz. Her free spirit, her wanting to be her own person. I love the plot of the self-esteem being taken away by people she loves only for her to realize it and starting to stand up for herself. My favorite thing? SHE DIDN’T FORGIVE HEATH RIGHT AWAY. She made that man grovel for the WHOLE BOOK. I don’t think she should’ve forgave her parents that quickly when they were HORRIBLE to her. And that’s the reason for the 4.5 along with the fact that we didn’t get much scenes with Max and Yaz.

Heath. So pathetic. When he realized his feelings for Yaz, he messed up horribly and told her he pretty much settled for her now. Once he realizes his screw up, he grovels completely by not only immediately apologizing; but his whole demeanor changes and he realizes how important Yaz’s job/lifestyle is. I liked how the author didn’t use his trauma from childhood to be the reason for his actions and instead still made Yaz not forgive him. His relationship with Verity was the best. I can’t wait for her book.

This was my first book of Susie Tate, but will not be the last.

This story was great. The writing conveyed the emotions so well, my heart twinged and squeezed so often because I was really feeling it all.
The characters were well developed, and felt genuine. Even the dialog had a sense of realism to it, as if pulled from actual conversations.
I liked the heroine, she doesn't just forgive everyone immediatly like it usually happens in this type of books. For a supposed flake, she is actually a mature person.
I liked the hero in the end, too, even though at first i wanted nothing but to punch him.
They struggle through, and even though they get their happy ending, they continue to work on their issues.

Yazmin Hardcastle has been in love with Heath Markham all her life. Heath is her brothers best friend, and has the been pretty rude and downright mean to her the last couple of years.
Heath is a doctor, born into a family of aristocrats, suffused with history, money and land. He is twin brother to Verity (Max business-partner) and struggles with severe abandonment issues. Heath has a list of qualities expected in his future wife, and Yaz does not fit these anywhere. Yaz on the other hand struggles with her family’s and Heath’s image of her as a irresponsible, alternative, slightly crazy, and exhibitionist.

I have tried that before and honestly it’s much, much worse than just laughing along as they take the piss. When I put myself out there and they dismiss me, I can literally feel my self-worth sliding away. And I need to believe in myself[…]

My heart broke for Yaz, she was truly a remarkable young lady who believed in herself when nobody else would. She made a name of herself, took chances, didn’t depend on anyone - always being there for everyone, wearing her heart on her sleeve. When Heath made mistake by mistake towards her, she put him in place and demanded respect. She did it with integrity and love. I loved Yaz!

I used to think you were such a gentleman. Dead posh, charming, perfect. Well, I can see now that you’re anything but a gentleman. A real gentleman would never have spoken to me the way you just did.

I liked “Unworthy” better than “Unperfect”, there was just something more to this story.

- No cheating
- OW/OM drama: H has a girlfriend at the beginning (this was totally drama-free and fitted his character)
- Triggers: child neglect (off page)
- HEA with epilogue 6 months later

I loved how protective and OTT Health was with Yaz. Man, that dude could really put his foot in his mouth though lol. On one hand I liked that she drove him to such hysteric verbal diarrhea on the other hand it was a little ridiculous that such an accomplished educated man was such as tool. When we really got into the why he is the way he is some of it made sense but still dude, think before you speak. Overall I felt more exasperation than angst with this one. It was still an enjoyable read but I just never really loved either character. The ending and the epilogues were so so so sweet though and that’s why I’m rounding my rating up.

Overall: 3.5

So I had actually read the first book in this series like a long time ago. Which means that I remember nothing much from the first book, only a few bits. I actually enjoyed this book because the H did some grovelling and I love it when men grovel. 💖🤷🏻‍♀️
I felt for the heroine and how she was treated by her family and the H for so many years. But she did annoy me in some parts of the story. 🙄
However I can't complain. This was a Mediocre story for me with some Angst. A 3.5/3.75 🌟 🤩 for me. Did love the H though, towards the end. 💟

Yazmin and Heathe

Another fantastic read from Susie Tate.
A loved Yazmin, a free spirited surfer that lives her life on her on terms despite the disapproval of her family.
They think of her as flaky and irresponsible, but she is everything but despise it all, she's still tries to maintain a close bond with them despite their hurtful remarks.
Heath is an idiot. He keeps hurting her at every turn, and to be honest, I would have let him go long ago with the disrespectful way he often talked to Yasmin.
Nonetheless, a great read. Highly recommended

It was good but not great, I thought the story got boring as it went on. The book had really good potential and I loved Yaz but I just didn’t see the connection with her and Heath and I wasn’t sure if she actually really loved him or if she finally got to be with her long life crush. I am still excited to read the book about Verity. 🩷

Amazing

What a GREAT book! Susie Tate is a new to me author but she is definitely an author I will read again!

This was a story of live, loss, growth and rather than a coming of age but a coming into you’re self story.

Full of laughs, romance, love and saucy talk it’s a great book on all levels!

Partially read

I couldn't read the whole thing after the 5th "no let me explain" "no" moment. Plus, I'm so over books where the heroine is drop dead gorgeous. Double standard? You bet. I love a plain, not just thinks, no magic makeover, but a real plain woman gets the hot guy book. This author has already set up where all her characters are gorgeous. I might have missed something but don't want to start another series where everyone is always the same.

I wanted to love this book so much - and I absolutely adore Yaz - but I felt like I was getting whiplash from the characters compared to the previous book. Everyone treats Yaz so terribly (other than Mia of course), especially Heath, yet they were the ones (especially Heath) that were so amazing and kind and supportive of Mia in the previous book. Also, I felt like everyone got off too easy and was forgiven too quickly after the years of verbal abuse to Yaz.

I wanted to love this book I truly did. But the underage flashbacks from when she was 11 and he was 21 really didn’t sit right with me. Especially bc he was fantasizing her at such a young age. The plot was pretty much MMC and MFC family constantly putting the MFC down and belittling her lifestyle and of course MFC is in love with MMC. Which makes him hard to turn away.
