Wei As the new music professor at Korham University, I need to focus on my job. I can’t get entangled with that tall and handsome Facilities Manager who I keep bumping into on campus. Did we have a hot moment together at Christmas? Maybe, but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s taking my music lecture. Students are off limits, no matter how flirty and sexy they are. The problem is that Logan’s not just a student; we’re co-faculty, neighbors, and we’ve become good friends. I’ve started to peel back the layers that make up who he really is. It turns out there’s more to this sweet guy whom I’ve been growing closer and closer to. As the semester winds down, the days of him being my student are numbered. Pretty soon, nothing will stand in the away of us hooking up. It’s scary, but can an athlete like him really fall for a performing artist like me? Because I’m afraid I’m already there.
Logan I’ve been broken for a long time, so I make my job at KU my life. No one has been able to tug on my heartstrings for years. So of course I’m blindsided by this talented and gorgeous new professor I meet. He makes me smile and gives me something to look forward to for the first time in so long. The one catch: I’m taking his intro to music class. That’s fine by me, I can push down these feelings. I can totally ignore the blazing hot chemistry Wei and I have in the tiny practice rooms while he teaches me scales. But as the semester goes on, I realize he can offer me so much more than just a pretty face; it’s possible that everything I lost all those years ago exist in Wei. When he plays a song, or whenever it’s just the two of us, it feels just like magic. I refuse to make a move on my professor, even though we’re both faculty. Good things come to those who wait, right? I just have to not let him realize I have a massive crush on him and not let him kiss me…again. And again.
[“The Strings We Play” is a low-angst, male/male romance about two working adults. It involves music lessons, workout sessions, kissing under the stars, soccer-themed birthday cakes, and discovering the love that only a found-family can bring, HEA guaranteed. It is the third book in the “Artists and Athletes” series but can be read as a standalone.]
CD Rachels has been coming up with stories since he was little. At first it was all about superheroes and pocket monsters, but his genre of choice has expanded since puberty.
He’s been consuming young adult gay fiction since he was a teen, but within the past five years moved up to the big leagues of gay adult romance. In 2020 during quarantine, he burned through more male/male romance books than he ever had in the previous 29 years combined.
He lives in New York City with the love of his life and is a nurse by trade. When he’s not reading and writing, he’s playing board games and practicing music. He is honored to become a self-published author, and if you’re reading this, your support means so much to him that it’s giving him a tingly feeling (in a good way).
Awh shit I'm crying again. The last two chapter and the epilogue made me a sobbing mess it was so beautiful. This book made me feel warm and secured and somewhat hopeful.
"You make the strings in my heart play a symphony."
Oh Logan, you sensitive sweet jock. This was such an endearing read. There was very little angst and so many romantic moments. From their first glimpse of each other both Wei and Logan felt the pull. Logan hadn't felt much of anything for a long time, ever since a tragedy upended his life, so he was determined to seek out the feelings Wei stirred in him. Wei was far from unaffected himself, but unfortunately he finds himself as a brand new Assistant Professor to none other than Logan on his first day of teaching.
"You taught me how to play music, but you were really teaching me how to live again."
I loved watching them dance around each other for the semester. Since they'd decided that anything physically romantic would have to wait until Logan was back to being just a member of faculty at the end of the semester, it gave them time to develop a friendship. Of course this friendship came with a wealth of pining which I loved. What I also loved was how well Logan fit into Wei's tight knit family. For so long it had just been Wei, his sister, and his nephew he was helping raise. Logan slotted into their unit like he'd always been there. Seeing Logan interact with Galen, Wei's 7 year old nephew, was absolutely adorable and I really enjoyed their moments together.
The ending brought a tiny bit of drama, but thankfully that was settled fairly quickly. And that epilogue! It was simply beautiful and it wrapped up Wei and Logan's romance perfectly. There were so many swoonworthy moments. I am totally looking forward to Omar's book and OMG I think I figured out who his love interest is. And let me tell you, if I'm right, things are about to get even more interesting in the Artists and Athletes universe.
A really lovely, super sweet story. Probably my favourite in the series.
They are both such lovely people. Wei is struggling to pay the bills for his family and achieve his dreams. Logan has been working to hide the numbness he’s been feeling. When they meet they feel sparks, but though they are co-faculty, they also discover they are student teacher. But they can be friends right?!
This was a slow burn, thanks to them choosing to be friends until the semester was over. Building trust and love. It’s pretty special when they can finally act on their feelings. And seeing Logan come alive again was also pretty great.
If you are looking for a heartwarming story that will keep you turning the pages, this is one you should definitely add to your list.
Okay, so I’m coming into this one smack in the middle of a series but I didn’t feel like it took anything away from the flow of the story, so I don’t guess they have to be read in any particular order? Anyway, in this one, we have Wei and Logan. Logan, I wasn’t sure about in the beginning. He wasn’t very likable to me. He went from an overconfident dude bro to an overzealous fan-girl any time he was around Wei, and I thought it was kind of cute, though the dude bro kinda became silly after realizing how he really felt by his inner dialogue. Both men are as opposite as night and day and I love that about them. I love the opposites attract thing, especially, like these two, the power dynamic and coupling aren’t the way you’d stereotypically think of them. I love that too! These two feel like a real couple to me. Plus, I’m such a sucker for a good dad figure, or in this case, an uncle. It’s what sucked me in! Overall, very cute story.
Goodness gracious, CD Rachels, this story was absolutely beautiful! Wei is finally reaching his dream of becoming a college professor. He’s gotten a position at Korham University, and he gets to teach and learn music. His professional life is falling into place, and his personal life is full with his sister and his nephew. Logan loves his job. He’s the Facilities Manager at KU, and loves helping out the student athletes. He may be alone, but he’s got friends around, and he’s ok. Mostly. When Wei and Logan meet, there’s an instant spark for both of them. But when Wei discovers Logan is taking his class, he can’t risk his dream job. After a rough start, these two build a beautiful friendship. Wei finds someone who supports him and bonds with his family, while Logan finds connection and family that he hasn’t had for years. He’s so incredibly sweet with Wei’s nephew, and such a good soul. Wei is happy to give Logan everything he’s looking for. This story is sweet, emotional, funny and very sexy. I absolutely fell in love with Logan and Wei, and I loved seeing the Athletes and Artists boys again!
Logan has been in the background of the first two books, so getting his story was nice. And it was certainly a great one. Then there's the wonderful new music professor, Wei, who was such a huge help to both Landon and Dane. I love how the stories are really starting to intertwine more as the series goes on and the KU world gets a little bigger. I'm completely hooked!
I did not think this series would be able to maintain it’s strength through this book in the series. I thought that switching the focus to the faculty would be less enjoyable than the previous books that focus on university students. I could not have been more wrong. Wei and Logan take the emotional ante up a notch, maybe because of the very fact that they ARE adults who have more life behind them.
Wei is a newly-hired music professor (excuse me, Assistant Professor) at KU and is living his dream playing and teaching music. Nothing means more to him than that, except for his sister, Pei, and her 7 year-old son Galen. Logan is the facilities manager at KU, living only for his job in a gray lonely life. These two meet and have chemistry immediately, which is normally fine for co-faculty, but unfortunately not for teacher and student which they also are… since Logan is taking a beginner music class from Wei.
The forced distance between them because of their temporary student teacher relationship allows them to get to know one another as friends first. And to discover that the other is worth the wait.
Once we get to the good stuff, it was worth the wait. Logan is hiding more layers and emotion under his tough physical appearance than expected, and Wei is a flirty little minx that has more confidence that expected. Their chemistry is gorgeous and written in amazing detail - this line did it for me…
”I thread my hands in his hair, and he hums, knowing what’s to come - me, I’m what’s to come.”
Mistakes are made, emotions are intense, and forgiveness is a welcome relief. I enjoyed this book every moment. And the epilogue? Exactly what an epilogue should be. Thank you, CD Rachels for weaving an enchanting story with a beautifully wrapped gift at the end. Made saying goodbye to these characters a little easier! 5/5 stars from me!
Loved the characters in this book. Wei and Logan are great. It explores more into the family and grief of being alone. Really highlights that found family is enough for a lot of people.
This book made be happy and teary at the same time. Logan and Wei's story was beautiful and lovable and sweet.
Wei is a new music teacher at Korham U. And he comes with some baggage (but don't we all?). He helps his sister raise his nephew, works two jobs to support them and has some trust issues after his aunt left them when they were still young. Logan is the facilities manager at Korham U. He's a loner, feels alone and doesn't really know what joy feels like after his parent's death until a handsome angel plays a beautiful piano piece at an event and gives him a kiss on the cheek under the mistletoe.
As main characters you cannot really ask for sweeter ones than these two. Both have so much love to give and happiness to share.
The only thing between them is that Wei is actually teaching the class Logan's taking at the university so their romance would result in so much trouble neither of them is willing to take. Because of this the first galf of the book is full of tension and waiting and makes it a good *almost* slow burn.
And in this case slow burn is defined by the time that passes in the book from the time they meet until they finally share a romantic moment (maybe 5 months?) But it still happens somewhere around the middle of the book like in almost every romance book. It is different from my definition of slow burn which is that the romance doesn't reach its peak until the last few chapters of the book. But I get that it's just my understanding differently, still it threw me a little.
The romance was very sweet and honest between these two guys regardless of the timing. I loved how they secretly fell for each other even though they couldn't be together for a while. The kind moments they shared felt more real like this without the physicality of a relationship mixed in.
I loved little Galen in the story. You can basically throw a book at me, say there's a sweet child character in it that both MCs care for as parent figures and I will read it immediately! As a child character his view on the world and the situation was so innocent and sweet! And of course seeing two men loving and taking care of a kid makes all hearts throb a little faster!
My only observation, which I noticed in all of the author's books, is that the storytelling accelerate in the second part of the book. The scenes are not that detailed, the inner thoughts of the characters are not shown much just barely mentioning what they're feeling, and overall, it feels like we're now rushing to the end. I feel like a lot of opportunities to deepen the emotional connection between the reader and the book is missed by this fact. Every time, I love the first part of the book and then it becomes a bit superficial and then the ending is sweet again so I love it. But I want to see more in between, especially when it comes to relationships with side characters!
All in all, the romance between Wei and Logan was just so nice to read. It made me happy and tear up sometimes. It was definitely a bumpy road emotionally for everyone. And the sweet moments and obviously the ending brought it all together.
I adored Wei and Logan 😍❤️. They were sweetest. Love their insta-love kinda story. They were not perfect just like any Real life couples. Their problems were realistic and so were the solutions. Wei has a cold childhood, where Logan has lost his parents in an accident. The problem of Wei's Aunt was self quickly and perfectly in the book, so was the problem between the MC's. I love C.D Rachels writing style. This was my first book by C.D. Rachels, and highly satisfied 😍. Looking forward to reading more books by her.
#ARC was provided by GRR and this is my honest review.
I've read the first two books in this series, and while I enjoyed them I wouldn't say they moved me. This one really touched my emotions, I connected strongly to the themes of family and acceptance. And it has to do with all the work CD has put into their writing. I can't wait to see what they write next, and how their craft gets better.
Family is the concept that is at the heart of The Strings we Play by CD Rachaels.Family both lost and found. A continuation of the authors Artists and Athletes series we are given the story of Facilities Manager Logan and new professor Wei. They first meet through coincidence and feel an instant attraction. Unfortunately timing is everything in this tale of love and their timing at first is not optimal, leading to roadblocks in their path to being together. Circumstance dictates that they proceed slowly, which allows them to truly get to know each other and fall in love in this slow burn story. They have both suffered loss in their lives which makes the choice to take a chance again even more difficult for the both of them but as usual love wins out in the end. Great story, just like the others in the series. Recommend starting from the beginning if you want to read a great series but definitely not needed to enjoy this book all on its own.
Nice! Both Wei and Logan are the sweetest guys ever. There’s layers, of course. Wei has his cold childhood, Logan the loss of his parents. I like the little twist- it’s not professor/student, exactly, as Logan is co-faculty. I also love that they aren’t man-children, either. The events are those of real life, of the struggle of being adult. Through it all there’s music. Oh, and camping!
Logan might be one of my favourite characters so far from this author. He was so sweet; not what I was expecting based on the glimpses we got of him in the previous books, but when he’s adorable as Logan is that’s more okay. The instant attraction followed by the mutual pining was delightful to read. I’m addicted to this series.
Wei Wong is happy with his new job as Assistant Professor of Music at Korham University. The catering group is another job he fills in.
Logan Micucci is the Facilities Manager of the KU Athletics Center. He is impressed by the Asian guy who plays piano at the Athletics Formal and catering the event, it’s more like he’s head over heels. For more than six years he never felt like this. He feels lucky to get music lessons from Wei at KU.
Logan is confused by Wei’s hot and cold shoulder. Wei is confused by his feelings for Logan. He can’t stay away but also can’t start anything with the man. He’s his teacher, even where they are both adults and also sort of colleagues too. They can’t be more, when you speak that out loud enough times then you gonna believe it yourself.
After Wei gets to know about Logan’s trauma, he wants to comfort him, and that’s what he does.
For my pleasure Wei was way too reserved, he’s in his right because of the teacher-student matter, but still. In the beginning, they were a bit awkward together, I cringed at times watching them. Later on, they found a way around each other. My heart reached out to Logan, what he’s been through, ugh! There are a few sharp moments but most of the time it was a sweet easy-going story. I found the music aspects a wonderful addition! In the end, they have their deserved HEA. Overall a nicely written story. I think created with the intention to make this an, as much as possible, uncomplicated sweet romantic read, mission accomplished!
Wei and Logan are both good, responsible guys. Logan has basically spent the last few years working hard at the Korham University but not really living. Very little gives him spark or brings him joy. Until he spots Wei at a holiday event and becomes interested in getting to know him better. Wei and his sister Pei have been all they have had essentially for a while and they are dedicated to making sure Pei's son Galen has all he needs as well. So Wei is a graduate student, plays piano for events, works catering gigs and now has landed an assistant professor gig at Korham University so that more steady income will come into their home. They are not your typical couple in this series as they are co-faculty, neighbors and friends. And as such they would be free to pursue their mutual spark and attraction but Logan is taking a class with Wei his first semester teaching so they are careful as they get to know one another not to cross the line. Their slow burn attraction, getting to know you and romance is so delightful. Yes, it takes them a while to get on the same page, but their journey is sweet and angsty and gives the reader lots of time to get to know them and root for them to make their way to one another with a hiccup along the way that is quickly resolved. And oh the epilogue brought a tear to my eye. I received an ARC from GRR for an honest review.
I absolutely adored this book! Wei and Logan totally stole my heart in “The Strings We Play!” This book made me want to give Logan a big hug. I felt for him so! I was also glad to see Wei be the apple of someone’s eye for the first time in his romantic encounters. I love that the Facilities Manager of the KU Athletics Center and the newest Assistant Professor in the Music department got their own story. Yay faculty romance, with a student-teacher twist!
Logan and Wei are very likable characters, so their big conflict had me on edge. I was glad to see the resolution fit the pair. Pei, Galen, Aggie, and Otis were great side characters. It was nice to see cameos from some of the KU soccer players as well.
I could tell this book was close to CD Rachels’s heart and I was here for it! This book has a great message about found family and/or how you define your family. It also hits on notes of loneliness, marginalization, and finding someone to be the light in your life. Add all of the musical moments and I was one happy campy. Per usual, there’s a lot of heart in the story. There’s also a good amount of heat!
Can’t wait for “The Roles We Own” up next in the series!
Full disclosure, I text-to-speech this book, which can decrease the effectiveness of the writing. However, even accounting for that, these characters felt very hallow. Not much character building or development, who are these people? I don't know anything about their values, what they think of others, what drives them and what makes them tick. Occasionally they'll behave completely out of character (was Wei really strutting around naked literally one scene after he told Logan to wait?
The book also has a lot of telling instead of showing. We're told that Logan won't ever betray Wei again, but we don't see him working through the mistake and realizing why he was wrong.
This is a new author and they have good ideas, I'll probably wait a few more books before trying them again.
Logan and Wei stole my heart, they broke it and put it back together. I adored this books so much because both MCs were older being faculty in college instead of students which made their dynamic different from the previous book in a great way.
I loved Wei’s family and his relationship with his sister and nephew, and how well Logan integrated with them.
Logan having a complicated past made me feel for him so hard and I was so glad Wei could help him through his issues.
Five stars all the way
This series keeps getting better ❤️❤️❤️

This was better than the first book in the series. The characters had more definition and made it easier to care. However, the editing of the book continually distracted me. There was no consistancy to the start of paragraphs, some of the new sections started with double breaks, and a few pages only had a couple of words on it - at first i thought it was an artistic choice, but then realized it was more likely an printing issue. If this book had been cleaned up a bit more, i would have been less distracted while reading.
This series just gets better and better. Here with Wei and Logan we have an interesting twist on the student/professor trope as both men are on the faculty so technically have equal power, but Logan is enrolled in one of Wei's classes so there is also that power imbalance. Watching them navigate their multiple relationships in class as well as friends hoping to be so much more outside of class made for a great steamy read.
Least favourite of the series. I struggled to connect to Wei. His reaction to Logan contacting his aunt, forgetting about his aunt's voicemail. I also wasn't convinced he would have contacted Logan if Galen hadn't run away. Also when they reconnected the apology was tame. Logan deserved more. And I think he could do better.

Sweet romance! Wei and Logan are all sparks when they are together but being teacher/student doesn’t do them any favors. It’s a feel good story with some angst and totally enjoyable.
Firstly let me say I’ve got this book of gay romance reviews and this is me leaving my honest review. Wei Has just had his dreams come true by becoming a music professor at Korham University. He was also happy when he was asked if he would play the piano on campus at an event that he is already working. You see He has a little job working for a catering company to bring money in for him, his sister and nephew. But he gets a bit lost when he’s looking for the music hall and he comes across the most gorgeous man he has ever seen. And to make matters better he’s shirtless. There is an instant attraction but he gets called away before he can talk to him. Logan doesn’t really enjoy attending these parties at the University that He has to attend because he is part of sports department. But things are looking up because as he gets ready he turns around to the most gorgeous man asking him where the musical hall is. For the first time in years his body reacts straight away to this gorgeous man. Logan knows already that he’s going to find out who he is. He could listen to him play the piano all night long he is so talented but when he follows him to find out where hes going he finds out that he’s also working for the catering team. Logan still wants to know more so as the night goes on he helps the catering team get finished up so he can speak to this sexy man. The night ends with Wei kissing him on the cheek and Logan can’t wait to get to know him better but then the problem arises. Because they’ve just worked out that Logan is one of his students because he had decided that he wanted to learn an instrument so he’s taking part for one semester. Wei knows straight away that he cannot be involved with a student.
I really feel for these two because the attraction that they felt for each other was instant you could tell the chemistry was just going crazy. I really enjoyed getting to know these two and I really liked Wei’s Sister and nephew and how Logan became a big part of their lives. I thoroughly enjoyed this, what a great read. Can’t wait for another book in the series.
Don’t get me wrong, I was overjoyed to see Logan getting his HEA. I knew there was something up with him from the first book. I loved seeing him happy and being loved. Wei was an amazing character, and I enjoyed watching him flourish as well. They BOTH deserved their HEA after reading about their lives up until they met. I just.. I kind of felt like the whole Fa plot point didn’t.. mesh? Like it almost felt like an afterthought, thrown in there to add to the inclusion this series has been so great about from the beginning. It’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it, it just felt like it didn’t quite fit. I feel like a jerk saying that, but I can’t help how it felt reading it. I did love the book, and I still can’t wait to read the series finale. This one just jumped large chunks of time at the end, and almost felt rushed when the first two didn’t. It also felt like some of the side characters got rushed into their own satellite HEAs at the end as well. As much as I loved this one, there were just parts of it I didn’t like as much as I probably could have. Please don’t hate me because I do still love this series! I recommend this book wholeheartedly, it just wasn’t a 5/5 for me.
This was a really sweet and fun read, I enjoyed the slow burn feels of Wei and Logan. Must say nephew Galen is adorable and did make for so many great scenes, helping bring these two together.
I loved their first meeting, the development through lessons together and journeys along the way. Slowly getting to know each others stories and finding a path forward together, how they support and help each other towards a better future.
This one did have similar issues to the previous one for me though, with the continuous time skips and drama thrown in that just didn't seem needed. It felt almost random, but I suppose it needed the angst for a bit and wel make sense with Logan's past.
Just wasn't a big fan personally and the story with the Aunt seemed random, didn't really make much sense with the whole thing of abandonment. I wasn't keen, although always great to see representation so that was nice.
Sadly I just feel like aspects were rushed so romance didn't grab me as much, didn't see the chemistry as much as the previous couples that I adored.
Overall it's an easy and enjoyable read, just didn't grab me as much as the previous two but love a happy ending as always.
I'm so happy for Logan to get his own story after being a background character so far in the series. He and Wei really have to hold out for their romance in this slow burner, neither wanting to cross the student/teacher line, even though they are also work colleagues, kind of neighbours and working towards friendship. Wei is a lovely guy, so loving and supportive of his sister and nephew, the most adorable seven year old. It's clear both are lonely and they have the most adorable first meeting. It's slow progress from there, constantly aware of Wei's position of authority but also their chemistry, draw to each other and generally just how lonely they both have been. There's a hint of drama towards the end but it just shows Logan's need for the person he cares for to be happy and complete in his life, knowing that he cannot have what Wei can. A lovely, heartwarming romance in the Artists and Athletes series. An easy read that brings together two men who are clearly meant to be. I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
I seem to have this habit of coming in during the middle of a series, but I haven't been bit by it yet. Even though this is #3, I was still able to understand everything perfectly. So if you're really interested in the blurb, you can safely go into this without issues!
The story was really cute. I'm used to the whole 'forbidden romance' trope being all about sneaking around and hiding and getting caught. This was really more about building a friendship and a whole bucket load of pining. So... slow burn ahoy, if that's your thing!
Things I loved: *Wei and Logan's relationship. There was something really realistic about it? Some strange mixture of insta-love and waiting all at the same time that was satisfying to watch unfold. *How sweet the main characters are. <3 There's some real depth to them, but they're so soft and I love it. *Side characters. Which I think is always great to love when it's a series, because you just know you'll see them later on!
All and all, this was a really sweet read. Definitely recommend!
Enjoyable student/professor romance with a heartwarming finding family trope woven in. It’s a sweet, low angst, low heat story about two hardworking, nice guys who have had to overcome a lot to get where they are. Wei and Logan have both known loss and grief, though in different forms, and there’s definitely a hurt/comfort aspect to the story too. Which is something I really like in love stories. Logan and Wei have chemistry from their first meeting, but they can’t act on it because it would endanger Wei’s job. After a while, they start hanging out as friends and as they get to know each other, their attraction grows and their feelings for each other become too strong to ignore. The secondary characters are a great touch. Wei’s sister and nephew add a loving, playful dynamic to the story, and it really helps to see Wei in his interactions with the people he holds most dear. I was surprised by his aunt’s background story but liked her unexpected storyline.
