Four sisters. A vast fortune. And a mother who thinks she knows best ... Where there's a will, there's a way. A funny, moving, brilliantly observed story about letting go of the past
When multi-millionaire Jacki Turner is forced to take stock of her life, she sets her daughters a challenge - in order to inherit her vast fortune, each must fulfil a task that she believes will push them to become better versions of themselves. Rose, an exhausted mother of three, must write and publish a children's picture book. Exercise-hater Mel must run the Gold Coast marathon. Isla, the eldest, must figure out who she is beyond her wealth and status, while commitment-phobic Jess must stay in a relationship for longer than three months. For each, Jacki's terms seem an impossible task, bringing painful wounds to the surface and straining tenuous relationships. But when the sisters are faced with an unexpected turn of events, they must learn how to move forward and forgive, or risk losing it all.

Terms Of Inheritance
I adored this uplifting and heartfelt family drama debut by Aussie author Michelle Upton.

Four adult daughters, Rose, Mel, Jess and Isla are set challenging tasks by their multi-millionaire mother, owner of the successful chain of Turner casinos and hotels. Jacki Turner has received some life changing news and to inherit her vast fortune the siblings must all successfully complete their individual terms with evidence otherwise their inheritance will all go to the charity organisation Aussie Animal Rescue.

I found the story engaging, relatable and loved the relationships between the siblings and how they were all so different yet supported each other. The story delved into challenging family relationships, tough love and stepping out of your comfort zone.

This is a sparkling ✨debut and a must read.

Michelle Upton was the winner of the 2021 Banjo Prize which is presented by HarperCollins Australia. Terms of Inheritance is Michelle Upton’s debut novel. A story of family ties, personal goals, failures, achievements, relationships and honesty, Terms of Inheritance is a candid Australian contemporary fiction title.

Jacki Turner is the matriarch of her family fold, but when life throws her a curveball, she works to change the mindset of her children. Jacki is a wealthy woman and her children are all set to inherit her fortune, but they must each prove their individual worth before they receive any money. Jacki tasks each of her offspring with an individualised challenge that will ensure they both receive their money and grow as a person. Jacki’s daughter Rose is a harassed mother of three children who is given the task of publishing her own children’s book by her mother. Then there is Mel, a woman who detests exercise but is given the task of completing her first marathon. Jacki’s eldest child Isla is required to look beyond her wealthy frontage. While finally Jess must commit to a relationship that is beyond her usual expiry date of three months. Jacki’s requests of her children seem to be out of reach, adding pain and personal turmoil to each woman. Will Jacki’s daughters be able to fulfil her requests in time?

Queensland based author Michelle Upton is a new face on the Australian publishing scene and it is really great to be acquainted with the writing of this Banjo Prize shortlisted author’s work thanks to Terms of Inheritance. Funny, moving, witty, poignant and connective, it was a pleasure to spend time with the clan featured in Terms of Inheritance.

The powerhouse driving this debut novel from Michelle Upton is Jacki, the mother figure of this tale. Jacki is a bright, bold and flamboyant character who seemed to light up the pages of this story whenever she appeared. Jacki is issued with a huge life change, which she embraces with a sense of dignity and care for her children, even though they don’t see it that way. Jacki’s situation reminds us that life is precarious and short. There are moments of high emotion, despair, forgiveness, acceptance, goal setting, elation, ire and failure in Upton’s journey based novel. I was with each of the core characters as they embarked on their personal goals and I’m glad that Upton ensured that each woman had a very different challenge to attack. The way this book is written ensures that we are placed in the centre of the action, and we are made to feel as though we are an extra sibling in this tight knit family circle. The side characters are also well drawn, believable and entertaining. It was a fun to follow this crowd in general!

With themes of wealth, privilege, status quo, entitlement, personal health, sisterhood, motherhood, conflict, romance, bonds and life lessons all playing a part in this tale, Terms of Inheritance proved to be a sincere read. I cheered each of these women on in their efforts and I backed them completely in their individual quests. A story that challenges our ideals of wealth, subsistence and inheritance, I’m glad these women were able to see beyond the monetary aspect of their mother’s legacy. A stunning and sunny Gold Coast setting illuminates this tale, providing the perfect backdrop to this engaging narrative. I’m glad that I selected Terms of Inheritance to be my travel book buddy on a recent long-haul flight, it provided the perfect combination of warmth, sincerity and pleasure.

“Four sisters. A vast fortune. And a mother who thinks she knows best… Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”

TERMS OF INHERITANCE is a fantastic read. It doesn’t mess around before getting the story underway and i just loved that! The premise was particularly clever because it set the plot up within the very first chapter. From there, I just couldn’t wait to see how it all panned out for the four daughters of multimillionaire, Jacki Turner!

This multi-POV novel features delightfully developed characters delivered with a heap of heart and humour. The resolutions to the story were entirely satisfying and also a lovely surprise.

This debut novel from Michelle Upton is right up there with other Aussie family dramas I’ve adored. If you’re a fan of Aussie authors like Liane Moriarty and Rachael Johns, TERMS OF INHERITANCE is a book you can’t miss!

Pick up TERMS OF INHERITANCE for a book that’s guaranteed to lift your mood & leave you chuckling along to the antics of Jacki Turner and her four daughters.

I can’t begin to tell you just how much I enjoyed Michelle’s book! It came as such a fantastic surprise - the more I got into it, the more difficult it became to put down. I found it to be the perfect blend of reality and life lessons with a splash of humour. Terms of Inheritance is a book I would highly recommend and couldn’t wait to share with friends.

‘And so, in a last-ditch attempt to be the best mother I can be, there will be conditions on the inheritance of my fortune. You'll each have one year to complete the task I've set for you. Each task has been designed for you alone, to push you to be the best version of yourself. Should any of you fail, you will all fail, and my vast fortune will be left to Aussie Animal Rescue.’

A story about five women, Jacki the wealthy family matriarch, who sets challenges for her daughters in order for them to inherit her fortune. With the aim to make them better people, all four siblings must complete the tasks in order to inherit. The eldest, Isla must do some soul searching beyond her current wealth; Rose, a busy mother, must write a children’s book; Mel must complete a marathon; and Jess needs to stay in a relationship for longer than three months.

‘Just because you're ticking all the boxes doesn't mean there's nothing missing. Mum gave us these conditions for a reason - maybe you should think about what that reason is.’

In my interview with Michelle (see the blog) she wrote how writing Terms of Inheritance allowed her to reflect on the many lessons she had learnt from life and the growth that ensued. I actually loved each of the women equally and the journey of growth they went on through both the internal and external challenges - even Jackie’s.

‘I want you to be pushed out of your comfort zone. I want you to question what it is you really care about. I want you to ask yourselves: who are you right now, and who is it you want to be? … You need to question everything you're doing so you can make changes now, before it's too late. I don't want you to get to the end of your life and have regrets.’

There is just so much to takeaway from this book on how families, despite all the love, can be the most complicated and challenging of relationships. Yet, for me however, Michelle’s tale spoke loudly about stepping out of your comfort zone in order to experience real growth. That you have to let go of what you know in order for life to happen to you - challenge you, exhaust you, reward you.

‘The tasks I’ve asked of you aren’t easy, but growing into your true self is supposed to be hard. That’s the point. The doubts, the missteps, they're part of the journey. The times you fail are the most important, because that's when you're broken open and where you really get the chance to move beyond what you thought was possible.’

This is a truly wonderful story - so real and relatable. A story of how people can show love in its many forms especially when it comes to families. That letting go, forgiving and moving on are crucial and that your life’s attitude can determine so much. Terms of Inheritance …. read it. You won’t regret it.

‘We should make a toast to Mum.' 'You're right, said Isla, and she raised her glass. ‘To Mum, and her bloody terms of inheritance.’

The highlight of the book was when two of the characters attempted Parkrun for the first time. It was hilarious and very relatable. The author used the real Parkrun location, too.

The matriarch of the successful Turner Empire is dying, and she's making her four adult daughters work for their inheritance.

The eldest, Isla, needs to discover her inner self.

Second eldest, Rose, must achieve her dream of publishing a children's book.

Middle child, Mel, has to complete the treacherous Gold Coast Marathon.

Finally, the baby of the family, Jess, must commit to a relationship for more than three months.

They've got just a year to push themselves out of their comfort zones. If they fail, all of Jacki's money goes to charity.

Terms of Inheritance is endearing and I enjoyed every minute. Out of all the sisters, I felt more connected to down to earth Mel and Jess. I really liked the two eldest as well, but damn. Isla's tendency to act the spoilt brat and Rose's harsh treatment towards her mum was a bit too much for my liking.

There's no doubt that as they navigate through their terms, all four also learn some pretty serious life lessons. Their journeys really push the limits, but are done in great faith.

Jacki was a whole heap of fun. Despite her lack of stating it, she genuinely adored her kids and was immensely proud of them. I really enjoyed the flamboyance, quick wit and unpredictability that made her personality shine.

Loved how realistic and relatable this read was! If you strip away the material wealth, these gals are just like the rest of us! Another factor that made this so great were the hilarious situations everyone was placed in! The side characters were unforgettable as well!

Such a superstar debut from Michelle!

For me, the first two-thirds of this book were all about getting to know the Turners - Jackie, Isla, Rose, Mel and Jess, rather than about the story. You get a really good sense of the family dynamic and each character and begin to like/dislike each one, but I did find myself waiting for and wanting something to happen several times and sections of the book were slow.

Each chapter is told from a different character’s perspective although all are written in the third person which I liked. Unlike other books I’ve read with this structure, Upton has used it well. She hasn’t repeated parts of the story unnecessarily and each chapter seamlessly picks up where the previous one ended.

I loved the references to Coles, Big W, Boxing Day sales at DJs and locations I’ve been too. I also liked the section that so accurately described every ParkRun that has ever taken place and being swooped by a magpie while running - a terror only Australians understand.

Having run a marathon myself, and the Gold Coast half marathon twice, I loved relating to Mel’s journey (chafe, sweat, euphoria, runner’s trots and all) as she worked to meet her terms of inheritance.

There were parts of the story and a few inaccuracies that annoyed me such as calling swimmers “togs” and the timeline felt a little bit disjointed at times, but if you can get past that and not overthink it, this is an enjoyable, easy read. I laughed, I cried and I didn’t want to put it down.

I quite enjoyed this. It started strongly, and the characters, and relationships between the sisters were well developed. It was at times amusing, and touching. However, the somewhat predictable and unrealistic wrap up of the story line left me disappointed.

4 sisters and a mother challenging each of her daughters. For sisters Isla, Jess, Mel and Rose they must each complete a task set by their mother the formable Jackie Turner to inherit her vast fortune. Fail and it will all be donated to a charity.

This is a story about family and their relationships. A book about love but also about past hurts. As each daughter starts their challenge they must also look at themselves and their lives.

I really enjoyed reading about each of the sisters and how they connected to each other and their relationship. Set in my own hometown @michelleuptontheauthor brings together a beautiful debut novel.

Terms of Inheritance is now available. Thank you to @harpercollinsau for my eARC.

What a delightful debut from Michelle Upton! With a scrumptious cover and intriguing tag-line, I knew I was in for a treat when I picked up 'Terms of Inheritance'. A story that was both compelling and heartwarming, sobering and insightful, Michelle has highlighted the complexities of mother-daughter relationships, explored what it means to be a family and how to forgive. A wonderful read.

Jackie Turner sets a task for her four daughters, each has her own challenge to complete, and if one of them fails, the Inheritance goes elsewhere.

Rose, Mel, Isla, and Jess couldn't be more different, raised by their mothers' personal assistant as their mum ran an empire of casinos and hotels.

Will they achieve what their mothers wishes.

It is a story of family through good and bad challenges that life throws upon them.

Loved reading this book 📖 ❤️

Good easy read, interesting characters and I enjoyed the themes and plot. It was a good pick up put down book.

I did find it a little repetitive and there were times where I was waiting for something to happen and nothing did. I also felt like the book focused on one sister more than the others and I didn’t connect with her personally.

This book had good characters and a great story line. It wasn’t a “Must tell all my friends to stop what they’re doing” read, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
The middle was a bit slow and not much happening but I quite enjoyed the end and it was sweet.
Can tell this was the authors first book - it wasn’t bad and it wasn’t astounding. Just a middle of the road happy to pick up and keep reading book.

Michelle Upton’s slick and sassy debut is one that will be on everyone’s lips this summer.
A story that delves into a tale about a matriarch of a wealthy family and the task she sets for her daughters to inherit her fortune.
Jacki Turner, owner of the luxurious Turner Hotels needs to take a look at her life.
When bad news arrives Jacki decides to challenge her daughters.
Each must complete a assignment, one that will make them a better version of themselves.
If all of them succeed by the required time, they will become the richest women in Australia.
Rose, a mother, must write a childrens book.
Jess must stay in a relationship longer than three months.
Isla must make a journey to see beyond money and success.
Mel must run a marathon and complete it.
Each believes it’s easier said than done.
But as they begin, they all discover that there’s more to life than power, money and control.
Terms Of Inheritance is quick witted, fun, engaging and most of all entertaining.
A brassy, bold and touching read from a new voice in contemporary fiction.
At the heart of this book is sisterly relationships, the female sibling bond is like no other and it’s very strong here, they’re gorgeous, flawed and courageous as they navigate life from the ultimatum given by Jacki.
Colourful characters, an expensive setting, an imaginative plot and a down to earth approach to life.
There’s more to the Turner family than just money!

Thank you to HarperCollins Australia for sending me a copy of this book to review!

When multi-millionaire Jacki Turner is delivered the news that she is dying of cancer, she sets each of her four adult daughters a challenge that they have a year to achieve before they can take possession of their inheritance. Isla must discover her true self beyond her wealth and status, Rose must publish a children’s picture book, Mel must run the Gold Coast marathon and Jess must stay in a relationship longer than three months. If they don’t achieve their tasks the money will all be going to an animal charity.

Each seems an impossible task and the sisters go between embracing it and hating it (more hating it takes place though!). Each also have painful wounds to face as well as their relationships with their mother and each other, although it seems like all of them are doomed to fail…

This was an easy and enjoyable read that covered some fraught relationships and an interesting premise. Some parts of the story were a tad predictable and there were a couple of tedious characters, but overall this was a fun read with some great messages around believing in yourself and giving things a go. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5.

I loved this witty and poignant read. It was a gift.

It’s a story of family ties, relationships, and goals being imposed on others. Jacki, a wealthy, hard, and prone to bitchiness woman, is the matriarch of her family of four daughters. When she finds out she is dying of colon cancer, she sets her daughters different goals to achieve if they’re going to inherit her vast fortune. Otherwise, she threatens to leave it to an animal rescue charity.

Jacki is like the mob in Succession, pretentiously jetting around in a helicopter. Jacki’s daughter Rose is a weary mum of three children who is given the goal of publishing a children’s book by her mother within a year. Mel, who is on the chunky side, is given the task of completing a marathon. Isla (the mum’s favourite and most successful career wise) is tasked with doing more than being wealthy and co-dependent on her husband, and finding her true self. She complains to her mum that this is a nebulous task. Jess, a free spirit, is tasked to committing to a relationship that is beyond her usual three months. Jacki’s requests are all deliberately difficult for her daughters.

Jacki reeks with uber self confidence. From her position of power and privilege, she thinks she’s doing her daughters a great favour by pushing them in this way. I didn’t like her much as a character, although she hit the pages vibrantly whenever she appeared. All the characters are well drawn, including the peripheral ones.

I found this book with its themes of wealth, privilege, conflict, and relationship issues within families to be engaging and absorbing.

The women pursued the goals they were set avidly. There were of course successes and failures along the way. There was frustration, much high emotion, and despair as they embarked upon their set tasks.

I highly recommend this absorbing and engaging read to others.

When millionaire, Jacki, is diagnosed with a terminal illness, she calls a family meeting with her four daughters. Jacki informs the girls they all have a year to complete an individual task, set just for them, which they will have to succeed in order to inherit Jacki’s vast fortune. If any of the daughters neglect to complete the task, the money will be donated to an animal shelter.

Isla is set on a task of self-discovery, to find out who she is beneath the layers she has protected herself with. Rose’s task is to return to her love of writing and publish a children’s book, a challenge when she had 3 young children to look after. Mel’s task is to run a marathon. And the baby of the family, Jess’ task, is to stay in a relationship for three months. A difficult task when her marriage lasted just a month.

The sisters all commit to their task, despite being overwhelmed with the enormity of the many small steps they have to undertake in order to have even the slightest chance of success. Not only do the tasks require determination and a change in the girls’ day to day lives, they have to face many challenges they have previously ignored.

As readers, we join the girls on their journeys, the ups and downs, the moments of clarity and understanding why these tasks have been left for them. There is a rawness to the family relationships, not everything is sunshine and rainbows.

This book left me pondering the tasks I may possibly be left with, and would leave for my loved ones, should I be confronted with death in my immediate future. What opportunities does death provide us with in our last years, months, weeks and days?

This was the loveliest story, all about mother/daughter relationships, and sister relationships. It's poignant, funny and relaxing. A great first novel!

When Jacki tells her daughters that she is dying, they are stunned, and have difficulties coming to terms with it. Jacki is a larger-than-life character, and still young. She's been a neglectful mother, putting most of her energies into her business on the Gold Coast in Qld, which has made her tremendously wealthy. The four women all have different relationships with her, and Rose, one of the daughters hardly speaks to her, for various reasons.

They are even more shocked to find that they each have a task to do before they can claim their inheritance, and they all have to complete their tasks in three months! Otherwise, the money will go to charity. Of course, none of them want to fulfil their tasks, but Jacki knows that, and she has given each of them something that suits their personalities, but which they will find a difficult challenge. Jess, for example, has to stay in a relationship for three months. Isla has to find herself, and there is a hilarious scene which concerns her going to a meditation retreat. Mel has to run a marathon, and Rose has to write a children's book. I was with them every step of the way as they all experienced different trials and tribulations, discovering more about themselves, and their relationships along the way. I was sorry to finish this book!

I received this free ebook from NetGalley in return for an honest review.

Jackie Turner has built a hotel empire but when life throws her a reality check she is forced to contemplate a very different future to the one she’d always imagined. Her relationship with her four daughters is not how she’d imagined and their lives have pulled them in very different directions. She decides that each will have to earn their inheritance by fulfilling a task that will make them a better version of themselves. They have one year to complete their challenge.

Her daughter Rose, who is juggling three young children, must write and publish a children’s picture book. Social worker Mel who hates exercise must run the Gold Coast marathon. Isla, her eldest, must figure out who she is without her wealth and social status and the youngest, Jess, must stay in a relationship that lasts longer than three months. Things, of course, do not turn out as expected.

Terms of Inheritance is your perfect summer beach read. Michelle Upton (who subscribes to this newsletter—hello Michelle!) has crafted a story that is warm, witty and wise. It’s full of surprises and unexpected twists. All the characters are fun and this truly is a entertaining family drama. The blurb says it will appeal to fans of Liane Moriarty, Marian Keyes and Sally Hepworth and that’s spot on. It was also shortlisted for the 2021 Banjo Prize, which tells you the writing is good!!
