I thought she was The One. But she was the one who broke me.
In high school, I wanted Katriona Merrick more than my next breath. I dropped hints and flirted like hell with her, but she never took the bait. So, I waited. And waited…
Graduating a year ahead of her, my resentful goodbye, paired with her oblivious farewell, crushed me. How could I be so wrong about her? She tossed me aside without a second thought, making me swear off so-called love forever. Yet, the emptiness and heartbreak have haunted my every second. And every one-night stand.
Flash forward a decade to my temporary return to my hometown. Running into her was a pipedream wrapped into my worst nightmare. When she blindsides me in an unexpected place sporting a changed appearance, bitterness wars with hope. But as an engineer, I’m an expert at building walls of all kinds, and I refuse to be her victim again.
Before I move to Philadelphia for my new job, a huge part of me wants Kat to suffer the pain she’s inflicted on me all these years. Still, when her past accident rules her present, I offer to help her learn how to drive, with a side goal of finally nailing her. It’s a win-win until she reveals the truth about what I thought was reality.
Though her ditching me created this broken, vengeful, and unfeeling monster, I think I’m the one getting schooled. And another broken heart.

I don't even know how to write this review! I wish I could rate it higher than a 5 star read because it definitely is! This book blew away every other book I've read this year! Ren grabbed a hold of me and did not let go, she still has me in her grips and I'm okay with that. I can't stop thinking about this book. We got a glimpse of Jared in The Wild Sparks series and I never imagined he would be the way he is. He is nothing like his sister Hadley. Jared has some issues, well he has a lot of issues. He has never been in love and doesn't even think it exists. I just want to write my review as; this is the perfect book. I laughed so hard, so freaking hard, there was love, fighting, out of this world banter between all of them! The dialogue could not have been any more perfect, I actually pictured myself sitting with them laughing and busting each others balls. I was kept on my toes on every single page, there was no thinking I figured it out because just when I thought I had it BAM, Ren through in a freakin loop! I LOVED IT!! I could not read this book fast enough, and now that it's over I want to read it all over again. Jared and Kat have so many things they need to say, and they never say them! Drives me crazy, I just wanted to reach into the book and shake the shit out of them!! Wake up and LOOK in front of you, quit pussy footing around! But then the story wouldn't have been so great! I loved how they were separated and reunited, after so many years and their pent up feelings really makes the perfect love story. Not running back into each other's arms, but fighting to just be friends. Can Kat and Jared actually become a couple? Will they admit their deepest, darkest secrets? OMG is it ever HOT!! The build up, the sex, and the sex was out of this world!! There are scenes where my face was red, I know it! I still can't believe how hot and sexy it was! And not to mention I am now going to be buying red lipstick, not telling why, you'll have to read it for yourself!! I could go on and on and on about how much I loved this book but I don't want to let anything slip out! The story flows so well, there aren't any holes and the characters are out of this world. I have never laughed so hard reading a book, there were parts where I had to put the book down because I was laughing so hard there were tears running down my face and I couldn't see the words! The way the characters play off each other is amazing, and the chemistry they have is unbelievable, I actually felt like I was in the story with them. They felt like real friends, like people I could see myself with. I can't say enough good things about this book. Ren really did an amazing job with this story! And again I will say it's perfect, it has everything in it that I love. I can't wait to read more from this outstanding author. Ren Alexander you blew my mind!!
“I never changed my mind about loving you. I just admitted it to myself and then grew the balls to tell you. I love you, Kit Kat. Not just present. My past and future too.”
“How long are you going to stand there and gawk? You move slower than a legless turtle.”
“She’s my… everything. I went without her for so long, and I never want to go back to that place. I don’t even want to imagine my life without her in it anymore.”
"The day we met, she changed my life, but the day I walked away from her, changed me."
"You were my first love. I just didn't know it."
“I love you right this second and every second left of my life. We'll make this work. Just trust me.”
“You’re the one I held everyone up to in comparison. You’ve always been in my heart.”
“I’m sweeter than sugar coated bee crack.”
My Review:
The crafty wordsmith know as Ren Alexander has given us another highly entertaining gift. And it is stunning. I didn’t think it possible, but her stellar writing and story-telling excellence continues to improve with each new book. She has graced us with yet another well-crafted, absorbing, and deeply moving love story that has the emotional depth of the ocean floor, with a healthy serving of humor, snark, and sensuality sprinkled throughout. I readily admit to being a jaded and cold-hearted cougar, yet Ms. Alexander had me in tears several times. She also had me gasping and grabbing for clean linens, red lipstick, cold drinks, and alcohol. My husband started hiding from me for some reason…
Although officially an adult in his 20s, Jared Beckett’s emotional development seems to have stalled at puberty. He has since taken up permanent residence in the sullen phase of adolescence. He is a cranky, damaged, snarky, and immature jackass. And throughout much of the book, I did not like him… at all - but I couldn’t stop reading about him. I swore as I read and cursed him and his selfish behavior – yet I was totally invested and couldn’t put the book down. I despised how he treated his friends and family, and I deeply resented any interruption of my reading while I was hating on him. At first I thought him a narcissist, but later discarded that theory as he actually hated himself most of all. Guilt, secrets, and resentment were destroying him, and he was imploding at a sharply accelerated rate that concerned and baffled his friends. I was baffled that he had friends given his foul moods, sharp tongue, and asinine behavior. I deeply enjoyed feasting on Jared’s story and witnessing the peeling of the onion. Following his long awaited epiphany and redemption, I was shocked to realize that I had even became a convert to Team Jared.
Ms. Alexander’s books are always an engrossing, compelling, and emotional journey, and her characters are consistently fully fleshed-out, complicated, and fascinating. Her writing tends to rattle around in my head and remain with me long after finishing. And no matter how long her books are, I always find myself wanting more, but I am greedy like that. I eagerly await her next opus, as I look forward to seeing what and who she comes up with next.
***POSSIBLE SPOILERS PRESENT WITHIN THIS REVIEW***
2/24/15 - DONE! Holy crap, now I have to think about writing my review. I need a minute or two or possibly three...
Jared and Kat, well let's just say they were epic! I've read a lot of books, tons of books even, but there's not that many that I would say were beyond stellar. But, this was definitely one that achieves that level. Beautiful love story. A wounded but yet complicated Hero and a damaged but yet strong Heroine are the leads in this book. Both searching for that lost love. And, before I can go any further, hats off to Ren Alexander!!!! She made my day!!!! Loved, LOVED, Loved this book!!!!
Over 800 pages, and worth every paged turned....
Tears that this amazing book is over:(
2/27/15 - So, ladies, that’s how it’s done! One long book that tells the entire story with a beginning, a middle, and an end. No wondering when the next book in the series is coming out. No forgetting what you’ve already read after months have gone by and the next book in the series finally comes out. Just a complete story that gives you closure after the final page is turned.
I couldn’t imagine a more appropriate title, The Keys to Jericho, for a story about a young man that has erected such walls around his heart to protect himself after he’s been hurt in the past by two important women in his life. Jared Beckett is one hardass. He definitely speaks his mind. He doesn’t hold back and sugarcoat anything. With his crass language and need to be always right, he makes the reader almost dislike him. That is until the reader gets a deeper glimpse as to why Jared is so harsh. He’s actually far from perfect, but he lures the reader into his story because he’s just that appealing. He’s funny and smart, and when you get down to it, he’s really a good-hearted person. And, of course, don’t forget that he’s gorgeous with dark hair and hazel/green eyes that just screams attraction.
Ren Alexander really pulled me into Jared’s story with her impressive characters and heart-stopping drama. Not only is the story told in mostly Jared’s POV, which I loved, but we also get a glimpse of a former friend’s POV occasionally, which is female. Katriona Merrick and Jared have a past. They’re old high school friends. Both had wanted more of their friendship, but being young and inexperienced had them both scared of rejection. So, they really never pursued that avenue. Now after not seeing each other in about fourteen years, they reconnect under surprising circumstances.
Wow! There just was so much back and forth and push and pull with these two. Both afraid to admit their feelings, but also realizing that during all the years apart they’ve never really felt any connection remotely significant as what they have with each other. As Jared helps Kat with a project in her life that so long ago claimed a loved one’s life, they spend more time together rebuilding that irrevocable connection. It was beautiful to finally see them back together as at least friends, but heartbreaking to see them struggling with their relationship on a more romantic level. Some major tearful moments were depicted as Jared finally admits his apprehension to commit to Kat. It only comes from the love and caring of his friends and dad that he actually breaks down and admits to his fear. This was a major turning point in the novel that pretty much affects everyone. I loved every character portrayed – Dash, Rio, Liberty, Hadley, Finn, Adam, and Brenda. Jared had the most loyal and honest friends ever! I would love to someday see Dash get his own story! I’m sure it would be amazing!!!
I liked how the author just kept the story going with all the little details leading up to their final milestone – birthdays and holidays were celebrated along with Kat’s long-awaited achievement. The story just moved along so quickly, I couldn’t believe that I read over 800 pages in two and a half days. There was never a dull moment, and I was so sad when I turned the last page. Usually this type of thing puts me in a book funk, which I now am, and I just can’t get into reading anything for a few days. That’s how I know that it was such a great story!! It was heartbreaking, but yet triumphant. I found myself feeling just as each character was as each emotion was embraced. Jared and Kat’s love story is romantic and sensual. The scenes, once they got together, were HOT and EXPLOSIVE! After all of these years of waiting, they finally got to acquaintance themselves with their “soulmate’s” lusting passion and true spirit. Things that Jared never experienced with anyone else were intimately illustrated with Kat.
This was one brilliant read! My emotions were all over the place when so much drama and suffering caused distress to be inflicted between the characters. But, the final outcome was one of victory and happiness. This magnificent couple got their heart’s desire – each other. A moving love story filled with anguish, intimacy, and conquest. Cheers to Ms. Alexander for a novel well written!
The mark of a great writer is leaving the reader wanting more. I just finished Ren Alexander's book The Keys to Jericho and that is exactly what I want-MORE. I love books that pull you so far into the story that you don't notice how long or short the book is. All I know is that when my kindle stopped turning pages I was a little sad that the journey had ended. I have been a fan of Ms. Alexander's for awhile and was more than excited when she asked me to beta read this book. Little did I know that this book would grab me by the heart and refuse to let go. Part of the reason may be that I see a lot of Jared in the man in my life and in several other people I know. Her character development is dead on. I feel like I know each and every one of them and would hang out with them on the weekend. The writing is smart, romantic, sensual and funny. While sex scenes are off the hotness scale, the love story between Jared and Kat is complicated and beautiful. The plot is well thought out and while the road for Jared and Kat isn't smooth, it is a wonderfully satisfying trip.
When Jared's mother abandoned her family while her children were young, she had no idea how that one act would impact her children. While Hadley seems to have her act together, Jared is a mess. A man who does not believe in love, he forms limited personal attachments, even with his friends. His relationships with women have been limited and short term. The one constant woman in his life is his unrequited high school love, Kat. Both of them being awkward teenagers and not being able to communicate in school, impacted them far into the future. Even when they are reintroduced to each other more than a decade after graduation, communication was still an issue. Both of them carry a ton of regret and emotional baggage, which adds to the layers of the story.
The supporting characters give this book a lot of depth and heart. The humorous Dash is the perfect foil for the often sullen Jared. He is the bridge between Jared and Kat, being friends with both, not realizing that the couple knew each other before he introduced them.. Rio is Jared's more grounded friend. His relationship with Liberty causes a lot of friction with Jared, but there is eventually truce between them for the greater good. The reader gets a little deeper look into Jared's family and why the family seems fragmented. I love Brenda, Kat's mom, at the end of the book, she is hilarious. More than anything in this book, I enjoyed the transformation of Jared. There were times I thought he was the biggest jerk on the planet but when his friends and father intervene he becomes the man he is meant to be.
I have noticed Ms. Alexander's growth as a writer. She has woven a beautiful story, with sub stories that need to be resolved. Hopefully that means we have not seen the last of the Beckett family. Dash needs a story of his own and poor Hadley needs to have her heart mended. I highly recommend this book and anxiously await the next project from Ren Alexander.
I loved The Wild Sparks series, when I heard there would be a prequel, I never imagined that this is what Ren had in mind. The story of Jericho (Jared), Hadley's younger brother from The Sparks series. Catching only a glimpse of him in the series, I had to read this book to find out more! Jared Beckett, a man scorn, a true friend, who believes that love does not exist and anyone that falls into it is pretty much just looking for heartbreak or is a sucker. His 2 sidekicks, (whom I refer to as the Pony Boys,) Rio and Dash fill this story with laughter and crazy antics while trying to get Jared to open up about himself. Such an amazing book. Ren seems to have written this book to make you feel as tho you are friends with them characters, you laugh with them, freak out with them and of course fall in love with them all. I couldn't laugh anymore then I did in this book, I wanted to shake that man to wake him from his state of delusion. When this book was over... It left me wanting more.... So please Ren, don't make this be the last we hear of Jared!!
Jared Beckett... FOREVER MY NUMBER 1 book boyfriend!
Ren Alexander totally outdid herself with this book! It is definitely not what I expected from her! Absolutely loved Jared's story!! 5/5 and then some!! Will be hard to top this book in my #1spot.
If you pay any attention to my blog at all, you'll know that I am thoroughly obsessed with Ren Alexander's Wild Sparks series, more specifically Finn Wilder and that, frankly, I haven't been able to stop thinking about it in almost a year. So naturally I couldn't wait to pick up a new book from her. Even if I was a little worried that she could never top Finn & Hadley's story. Ren has done it again. She has this amazing way of creating characters that feel like close, personal friends. I feel everything that they go through in such a powerful way that it actually hurts my heart or makes it burst with glee. Though the main focus of the story is Jared and Kat, you will fall in love with each and every character in this book as an individual. *NOTE: Dash is the Greg Rodwell of this story and therefore holds a very special place in my heart. This book is a must read but you should prepare yourself for a long-term investment because it seems as though Ren Alexander cannot write a book that won't forever stay in your heart or on your mind.
LOVED this book, Ren has a talent to writing, you can feel what she puts in words, you laugh out loud, shed a tear and get anxious about scenes between characters to the point you have to adjust your neck and remember to breathe. After reading Keys to Jericho I want to be one of the friends of each characters and hang around with them and be a part of their lives. The sex scenes are, let me say" HOT". Highly recommend this book and all that Ren Alexander writes, I am a total fan. Thank you so much it was such a good read, Cheers
Holy crap!! Jared and Kat! Where do I start? They were friends in high school, neither knowing the other wanted more. A chance encounter brings them back together. This book takes place in the middle of Hadley and Finn's story, Jared is Hadley's little brother. I loved loved loved this story! I laughed and cried and yelled. Thank you Ren for another amazing book!
Ren Alexander has blown me away with this book!! It's a MUST READ!!!! I loved this book and could not put it down. Fantastic storyline, Dynamic Characters, wonderfully written, all around Amazing!!! The Keys To Jericho is defiantly 5 plus stars!!! I didn't want this book to end.... I Want More Jared!!!!!! So, if you are reading this review, what are you waiting for, Add this book to the Top of your list, you will not be disappointed!!
If there was anything that could be said about this story it would be this: "This amazing story is filled with everything for every type of reader."
Ren Alexander is a great manipulator of words. Her Wild Sparks Series left me wrecked and wanting. The Keys to Jericho, Kat and Jareds (Jericho), story, is no exception. I am left wanting. I am left needing more.
The angst filled storyline is brilliant. I never expected the story to be filled with so much powerful emotion, but it was and so much more. I laughed at some of the antics and musings of each character. I teared up at some very personal epiphanies by these characters as well. It was eerie how so close to home some of this story hit. I smiled at how much was said with actions and how we all want validation with words to make things feel real. I enjoyed this story from the first to the last word.
I could explain the storyline with my own words and I wouldn't be able to do it justice. I advise you to go right on ahead and pick it up and read it for yourself. I love this story. I felt like everything that happened needed to happen. When a guarded man whose hurt and self hate has no outlet, what becomes of him when his past comes knocking makes for a great story. Jared is an enigma and Kat is the woman that is drawn to him like a moth to a flame. They want each other with absolute certainty, but there has been too much left unsaid. What can the Keys to Jericho unveil? Can the walls to Jericho's heart be healed? One click it to find out.
2.5/5 Jericho was kind of a jerk. Overall, it ended up as a good romance. Although I can see why his life made him jaded, other parts just made no sense.
Him and his high school friend/ crush reconnect years later and intrigue one another. They both have had feeling for one another over years but Jared (Jericho) choses not to feel any emotions. Kat is also attempting to learn how to take her life back into her own hands.
The man seems to hate his nice guy father for actually no reason. His friends stick by him only for Jericho to make fun of them at every moment. Buddy hates all women because he has mommy issues and feels guilty over something he did at age 13. I thought the story was cute, but Jericho's actions were not how an adult at aged 30 should behave.
I will say I did enjoy this book and it had redeeming moments, but I found Jared to be a very difficult character to connect with.
Where to even start? Second chances are a terrific thing and that is just what Jared and Kit get. Although they wouldn't have needed a second chance if they had just opened their mouths to begin with. The characters are all well developed, even the secondary ones. At times I felt I was there with them. This book is angsty, full of drama, hot sex and can be read as a stand alone. Although it was a tad on the long side, the author does an excellent job of moving the story along so it doesn't drag too badly. There were times that I literally laughed out loud while reading this. Of course, I also wanted to slap the crap out of the two main characters at times too, especially Jared with that mouth of his. Overall, though I would definitely recommend this one. Just be prepared for a long one.

The story of Jared and Kat is a gripping tale of the fear of rejection and of second chances. The lustful spark between the two began in high school but was unrequited. Years later, a chance meeting brings them together and the sparks flare to life. Kat is looking for love, marriage, babies. Jared believes all that is bull and women cannot be trusted, only used to service him. So the tug of war pulls back and forth. Swallowed up by lust followed by shame and guilt felt by Kat she takes a stand and backs off and Jared's mind descends into darkness toward the brink of insanity. She holds out for love; he doesn't believe love exists. But their chemistry is so powerful, they keep returning like a yo-yo. Observing Jared's torment was fascinating. Seeing him grow, overcome his fears and stubborn beliefs and to open himself to possible rejection was deep, intense and interesting. He has one buddy that so irritates him that their conversations provide comic relief. Excellent drama in every way. I simply could not put it down. I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Five Stars!

Wow - What an amazing read. One of the best books I have read!
This book just kept going and going, I though it was never going to end and I didn't want it to. So many times I was caught between loving and hating Jared, where many would have given up and walked away from this sarcastic and arrogant man, his family and friends stood by and got him through - by the skin of his teeth, but they got him there. Who knew that beneath all that sarcasm was a scared and broken man? You are left wanting to smack him one minute and hug him the next.
Both Jared and Kat are not very good at communicating with each other and only goes to show that miscommunication is what leads to all misunderstandings and eventual breakdowns of a relationship. Even if that relationship is only friendship. But it was great to see how they both worked it out (with ALOT of help from other parties) and we get a happily ever after.
I cringed, I cried and I laughed my fool head off on so many occasion I could count. Jared certainly has a flair for the dramatic, which made me love him even more. And Holy Sex Scenes!!! Hot Hot Hot!
The author did a fantastic job with this story. I wondered to myself if it wasn't a bit long - but I don't think she could have left anything out and achieved such a great result. I hate not knowing what happened to Hadley and how she wrote in her drama with out giving anything at all away was a stroke of mastery. I and now desperate for her book!
OMG I have come to the conclusion that I just cannot properly review Ren Alexander !! Her stories are just so intense it is insane !! I always feel tortured but yet completely sated after I read her...
So we met Jared/Jericho/Jare/Sonic in the Wild Sparks series , he is Hadley's brother. I really didn't know what to expect of him but he totally surprised me. First off I will say he is worse than a pre-teen hormonal girl !! OMG his attitude is downright horrible and although I LOVE the banter between him and everyone some of the stuff he says is just wrong !! No worries you will love him anyways !! I know I did. His past was rough , both he and Hadley are still working hard to deal with the rejection they have felt since their mom left them all those years ago. You know this is the main reason Jericho acts this way. He pushes away everyone that loves him with his cocky and sarcastic comments. He tries his friendships constantly and although he will do anything for anyone he WILL NOT open up for anyone. He has harboured some feelings for a girl since back in high school. He thinks of her often and really can't explain the reasoning why they ended up apart. He doesn't do the relationship thing at all and gets bored quickly if he tries. In between a big move and starting a new job he is spending the summer with his dad. He is thrust into the lives of his friends and dad everyday and one girl he meets may just throw him for a loop !!
Kat is devastated that he doesn't remember her. She knew he never returned her feelings but to just forget her , WOW. Crazy how small the world is and that she is now facing him everyday. Once the connection is made there is a lot of time spent forming a new friendship with Sonic and Kit Kat. They are both plagued by their past and yet both too stubborn and scared to admit how they felt then and still feel now. It is a frustrating journey and you will want to smack them both and just jump into the story and yell !! There is a lot of work and heartache put into this and will there be a payoff ?? At times it seems there will be and let's just say the HEAT these two radiate is phenomenal !! But it is not all easy going , many hurdles mainly themselves and their fears. Hang on for their ride !!
Ren puts a lot of detail and scenes in her stories , her books are longer than the norm lately and this is both refreshing and scary !! How much drama and heartache can she fit in one story !! You really get a feel for everyone involved , you feel like you are there with them , the good and the bad. I love the banter , I love the small scenes that may seem pointless to some but just give you something to enjoy and another way to connect. All of this combined with the main storyline makes all her stories 5+++++++ star reads for me !! Any of her characters could have a spin off and you would have an immediate connection with them from meeting them in a previous story. Thanks Ren and i look forward to more !!
There was much that I liked about this story, but Jericho/Jared tried my patience more than once. For me, it was a slow start. I was not fond of Jared. I did like Kat, Dash, Rio, and even Liberty. He was very rude to Liberty, Rio, and Dash. I wondered at times why Dash and Rio even stuck around. As the story unfolded, I began to understand Jared and why he was so closed off and even mean to everyone, except for Kat.
I liked the colorful characters of Dash, Shell, and Victor. I found myself laughing at times at their crazy antics. I was touched as Jared tried to help Kat push past her fears by teaching her to drive.
"However the truth is I've only been a victim, as Jared said, living in fear of getting behind a wheel, and allowing the fear to drive me instead of me driving a car."
Honestly, there were times that I just wanted to smack Jared when he interacted with his dad, Dash and Liberty. I wish that Rio and Liberty could have had a side storyline, but I was satisfied a bit later when Liberty had a part in helping Jared. I was also glad later as his Dad and he got a chance to clear the air about a past situation that had continued to affect them both.
I enjoyed the difficulties of the missed chances, the games played, the fears of being rejected, and unwillingness to be vulnerable that both Jared and Kat experienced as they tried to go from wanting to be high school sweethearts to becoming friends again and the transition to lovers. Ren got the awkwardness and uncertainty of their feelings and conversations. There were the times I was aching for them to say what they were really feeling. It felt real.
There were quite a few hot sex scenes, so if you're not into that... If you are, this might be the book for you.
As Jared said, "And clueless sweethearts finally getting their sh** together."
Jared learned to let down some of the walls of Jericho for his family and friends, but Kat definitely got the 'Keys to Jericho'.
There was the part about Hadley from the Wild Sparks series. This can be read as a standalone, but the parts of the story dealing with Hadley and Finn and their unfinished business left me curious enough to want to read that series, too. Jared showed that he was a caring brother when Hadley needed him to be there for her.
Note: I received an ARC from the author, and this is my HONEST review.
Jericho is hard to like in most of this book. He’s painfully mean in his sarcasm and dry “humor”. It’s obvious it comes from a place of pain but he doesn’t let it go and he’s so caustic with everyone. And heaven help you if he thinks you’ve crossed him in some way. And honestly, his family and all his friends are really annoying with their “Talk to me.” crap all.the.freaking.time. I wouldn’t talk either because they’d annoy the crap out of me. Though I do understand why they do it. He doesn’t talk to ANYONE. And bottling all that up isn’t healthy. But I can understand why Jericho gets so cranky with everyone. Kit Kat is gun shy in general and especially with Jericho. He had hurt her heart in the past and she’s afraid he’d do it again.
There are people in this book I loved. I FLOVED Dashiell. He kept me laughing. Most of my belly laughs came from scenes involving him. I eventually fell in love with Jericho. He was a man of truly few words that truly mattered, but as they say, still waters run deep. And in this case, it’s positively true. I loved Kit Kat. I loved Adam Beckett and Hadley. I wasn’t fond of Liberty. Throughout the entire book, I couldn’t stand her. I wasn’t a fan of Rio either. But this is true with all books, you’ll find characters that you like and dislike.
The story is long. So, don’t expect it to go by quickly. But it’s a great read. It’s detailed and it covers some time. But it’s definitely worth the read.
Ms. Alexander writes a very detailed world where people are annoying and lovable all at the same moment. Their struggles seem surreal sometimes and they seem over the top, but the truth is, we’re all messed up and if you don’t communicate then people are going to misunderstand your motives. And she does an amazing job of showing just that, even to the reader. So the question begs to be asked. Would I recommend...(https://textuallove.wordpress.com/201...) Read the rest of the review behind the link.
Jared (aka Jericho) is a hard character to like. He's rude, brash, and sarcastic in a mean way. I honestly found myself wondering throughout the first half of the book why his friends were friends with him. If someone treated me the way he treated them, I would have said goodbye a long time ago. That made me think that perhaps he was a different person when they were younger, but as we learn more about his past, he was always kind of like this, although it got worse as he got older. All I can say is his friends and family (and Kat) have the patience of a saint.
I do think that Alexander did a phenomenal job of redeeming Jared. By 50% of the way into the book, I figured there was no way I could ever like his character, no matter what she did. By 80%, I surprised myself by actually starting to come around on him and by the end of the book I was okay with him. I wouldn't say he's my next book boyfriend, but him and Kat being together finally made sense and brought a smile to my face.
Just a few things to point out--this book contains a lot of strong cursing, graphic intimate scenes, and is REALLY long (like 3 books, practically). So, be warned if any of those things bother you. I'd say the style of this book is very similar to Alexander's other books so if you liked those, you'll love this. Overall, it was an enjoyable read that really tries your emotions. If you're looking for a quick and easy weekend read with a swoon-worthy guy right from the start, look elsewhere. But if you're looking for something that will allow you to immerse yourself into the lives of two broken people and experience all the highs and lows (lots of lows) as they figure things out, then one-click this today!
Let me start out by saying that Ren Alexander put my heart through the ringer with The Keys to Jericho. With that being said......5 stars isn't enough on the rating. LOVED this book.
Jared Beckett is a tortured soul due to his mother leaving him when he was a toddler. He doesn't care what people think of him and that love is for fools. He has 2 friends that he is as close to as he can be with anyone. They are trying to help him find the love that will thaw his heart out. He had fallen in love with a girl in High School and when he thought she didn't return the feelings, he left after graduation without looking back but he never stopped thinking about her. However life, as it often does, threw Jared a curveball and they met again 14 years later when he returns for the summer.
The Keys to Jericho had all the emotions a person could feel in it. I laughed hard, cried, got mad, sighed loudly, and the love scenes were HOT! All the characters were brilliant and complimented each other tremendously with out of this world chemistry. I wanted to hang out with them. The story flowed perfectly and was super easy to read.
This review was really difficult for me to write because it's hard to express the feelings I had about this book without giving spoilers away. I read it in one sitting because I physically couldn't put it down once I started it. This is the first book this year that has given me a severe book hangover and I NEED MORE! It's simple, Ren Alexander blew me away with The Keys to Jericho and EVERYONE should read this book.
What an emotional rollercoaster!!! This novel was one hell of a ride.I didn't believe I could possibly be so pissed off at a character as much as I was with Jared. This was one of the longest novels I've ever read(Charles Dickens would be proud!!!)... it was a trilogy set in a single book!!!Jared's reactions to Kat throughout the story were so uncalled for...frustrating the reader ever so much!Being stuck in his past,he simply lived a life of bitter lonliness, keeping to himself, silently suffering and not even allowing his friends or family in.Only when Kat comes back into his life is he totally derailed from the path he had chosen to live, only she has the power to tear down his walls. She was the only person who held "the keys" to his heart and through a series of failed attempts does love truely prevail and glow in the end turning Jared 360* to another direction altogether. He loved and loved deeply but only Kat managed to get that out of him. This novel made me furious, excited, laugh, teary, happy and oh so emotional till its final page.A beautiful story of love lost and found.Ren Alexander...The Keys To Jericho does really deserve 5 stars and I a visit to my shrink!!!Thank you for gifting me such a great novel!!!
O.M.G!!!! WOW! Are there even words to describe how much I loved this book! Jared will capture your heart and then throw it back at you. You cant help but to love to hate him. He is perfectly imperfect. I related to this book in so many ways, it really had a deep impact on me personally. The book was very satisfying leaving you with the complete story and no stone left unturned. I was so thankful that Ren Alexander made this book the length that it is I got my fill of Jared and Kat plus some. This book brought me to tears on more then one occasion but also gave me great joy. The lows were extremely low and the highs even higher. Jared and Kat embark on the bumpiest of roads but their journey takes them to a place that surprised me with this Author. Her previous series The wild sparks runs along side this book. But it could be read as a stand alone. I personally loved The Wild Sparks series and high recommend reading it first or after. Either way you must give it a go. I absolutely loved this book!! 10 stars!
This book is worth more than five stars! If you loved reading the previous books in the wild sparks series well then this book will have you gracing for more of our favorite characters.
Kat and Jericho story is one you do not want to miss out on. The witty banter, humor, emotion and yes the under your breath mumbles will have you laughing and ready to choke them in the same moment.
To see how these to grow and come to their sense is pure joy. The relationship Jericho has with dash and rio well let's just say we see what true friends are made of and how these guys will do just about anything for each other.
I must Jericho is a man that can have you melt with just one smile and make you cry with what comes out of his mouth but it's all part of his charm.
Without giving any spoilers I must say one of my favorite lines is "Damn kid of a stripper. What a troll" and you will just have to one click this book to find out what that is referring to.
Well freaking done Ren for giving us yet another awesome read!
I loved the Wild Sparks series but the journey I just went on-indescribable. This is a journey that defines the saying "actions speak louder than words." Jared has so much love to give but he just is incapable of opening up and so damn unsure of love himself. Kat, she needs the words like every other woman and has plenty of self-doubt herself. I felt like I needed to be medicated while reading because I could get mad at Jericho but I got seriously pisssed if anyone else was saying anything against him- like screaming at my kindle crazy mad at them. The intricate way the author allows you to bond to her characters through her words is inspiring and a trait that you don't always find. This was a lot more than I expected and it showed me a whole different side to her writing. I'm blown away once again! My new phrase for this author is #likethis.
Oh. My. God! This book...I have no words, really. It has me twisted in knots. It makes me question my judgment. I was sure that I hated Jared as soon as I read this book. He's the biggest dick I've read in a book. But that changes everything when he got his head out of his ass and get his shit together and went after the love of his life.
So, here I am. I ended up loving Jared. I think I even love him more than I love Finn Wilder. You guys need to read this book. It's long, but its worth it. It is funny, heartbreaking, and heartwarming all at the same time.
Cheers Ren!!! I knew I'd love this book as much as I love your other three, or maybe, I even love this book the best!!!
I loved this one by Ren. Oh, how much I adore her. Just loved the supporting characters as well. It was a little to long a read for me as compared to the one that I read, but it was worth it. A must read.
This book is amazing! I cried, laughed, got mad, wanted to slap their heads together (more than once)!! I didn't think Ren could top her Sparks series but I have to admit this book is better! Now I want to know what's next for our Beckett crew!
This book is awful. I can't believe that it's considered a romance novel. The main character and the way he talks about women is disgusting, the way he talks about his friend's girlfriend is disgusting. I ended up shelving this book after a few pages.
Ren Alexander has a way with making you fall in love with the characters. I felt a range of emotions with each book I read. There are high ups and low downs. This book will make you happy, steamy and heart broken. I love Kat and Jared but at the same time you want to shake them. Loved every minute of this book and had a hard time putting it down.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Ren Alexander has written a 5-star book. Kat and Jared had liked each other in high-school but Jared never did what he said he would do with Kat. Now years later they hook-up again. Things do not go well for them at first since she doesn't believe anything he tells her. They have their good times and bad time. There are different things that each one must overcome if they are to be together. Jared's friends try to talk to him but he doesn't listen to them. He tells Kat that he doesn't believe in love and that he will never fall for that trap again. Kat and Jared are at her apartment one night and while they were making love Kat told him that she loved him and he said a lot of nasty things to her. Will Kat and Jared work past their difference and get back together or will she walk away from him and move on? This was a wonderful book and I would recommend it to anyone.

" I'm not sure yet. I'm currently working on Ricky's from my Wild Sparks series, and then a fourth Wild Sparks book. From there, I have no idea. We'll see how Sparks 4 goes, since Dash will pop up in there. ;)" Author's thoughts:
That's the #1 question I get after anyone finishes Igniting the Wild Sparks, but I'm so glad that readers want more of Hadley's story. :) The answer is: yes...eventually. I need a break from Igniting because it was so draining. Right now, I'm working on Hadley's brother's story, The Keys to Jericho, releasing this fall. After that, I'll be doing another Sparks-related book. THEN...I want to do Sparks 4, hopefully.
My thoughts:
I cannot for the life of me remember Jared/Jericho from the Sparks series seeing as the pivotal characters were larger than life creations themselves. So an 800 page book is kind of a self indulgence on any authors part & a truly puzzling publication when fans that originally supported a new author have begged for the conclusion to Finn & Hadley's saga. And who the hell is Ricky who is apparently next in line with a story to be told & how do any of these secondary mediocre characters supersede the main players & warrant an 800 page epic.
So no matter how many stars this book gets from 'new' fans who have not read the 'original',I will not be participating in this 'string the reader along' farce.
I do sympathize with your statement above as I too would have been drained after a writing 'tome.'And with all due respect I beg to differ if you were taking an hiatus away from the sparks world because as you stated 'it is so draining'than you would have avoided any or all of the players there within, even the mediocre ones.
So I for one will no longer be 'begging' as I have lost all interest.
This is the story of Jared, a structural engineer who, in between job, comes back to his home town. While participating in the building of his father's assistant's house, he reconnects with his highschool sweetheart, the one who got away and hurt him. His reluctance back in high school hurt Kat deeply and pretty much changed the course of her life, so this story is their second chance at love, following them getting past their insecurities and building their happily ever after.
This is a long, too long, book. It is filled with a lot of drama that at times makes it feel a young adult book, the characters are not very mature, at least emotionally. But they both had a traumatic past. It has a strong "real life" feeling, there is just so much stubbornness, so much insecurity from both of the characters. And the hero is more of an antihero. His reluctance an fear of being hurt is totally understandable, but there are so many rude and heartless actions and words he does and says, it was just very hard to like him.
What I do appreciate is the writing, it is a well written, complex, book, it makes you want to keep reading it. I also loved how beautifully the change in characters is shaped through their actions and how their relationships change through it all. Many of the side characters are lovely and their personalities are well built.
I thing this is a great book for anyone wanting to immerse in a long story, who loves this "real feel" and who feels close to the theme of this book.. In the end it's a beautiful soulmates kind of love story.
I received this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
** I received a copy of the Keys to Jericho from Net Galley and BooksGoSocial in exchange for a voluntary and honest review. My opinions weren't solicited and are given willingly. **
The Keys to Jericho by Ren Alexander is a hard one to review because for the life of me I don't know how others gave it 5 stars if I struggled through the whole book wondering why Jared/Jericho was so hard for me to like. He treated his friends badly and Dad even worse so I'm sorry that bugs me a lot. Anyhow I give the book 3.5 stars and this could be that I haven't read the other books, drank a lot or just perhaps but I just couldn't connect with Jared.
Jared (Jericho) can't commit to any woman mainly because his mom walked away when he was a kid but he's a love 'em and leave 'em kind a guy. He's heading home to Baltimore to visit his dad before starting his new Structural Engineer job in Philadelphia. He'll party with his buddies Dash and Rio, his sister Hadley with boyfriend plus reconnecting his high school crush Katriona. They'll fall in love and he'll have to accept that his mom just lost out on both his kids but he can love someone and have a HEA.
I hate leaving low rated reviews so I'm giving this a 3.5 stars and hopefully when Hadley's book comes out it will be one that I like.
