How Not to Date a Demon

Rate this book
Did I swipe right on the wrong guy?

This is a question Maeve has no choice but to ask herself as her boyfriend’s sins pile up.

Besides the usual dirty socks on the floor, the dishes left sitting beside the sink, and having to clean up after him like his damned mother, now he’s brought home three solid black puppies. At the request of his boss, who’s been holding a promotion over his head since the beginning of their relationship.

So fine. She’ll watch the puppies. They are pretty cute, after all.

…If she can ignore the way they guard the bedroom door with glowing red eyes.

What’s not cute? Galen’s shirts appearing in the hamper with the same two tears along the shoulder blades, the late-night walks, and the weird chanting in the middle of the living room.

Determined to get to the bottom of her boyfriend’s sudden weirdness, Maeve concocts a plan, a series of tests to figure out what the hell Galen is exactly.
Vampire? Werewolf? Something from Hell itself?
She’s damned well going to find out, even if she has to use all the salt in the pantry.
~
Is Maeve right to lead her own investigation into her boyfriend’s weird antics? Get in on this silly adventure and learn How Not to Date a Demon.

This was super cute and steamy, I adored it! Specifically Galen, who gives the term cinnamon roll a whole new meaning. Maeve is annoyed with her boyfriend of almost a year. He is a slob, he’s working way too much to earn a promotion that he’s up for, he brings home THREE PUPPIES, and he’s acting…weird. And then one night she follows him and realizes that he has fucking horns and wings and a tail and everything! Turns out, sweet, sweet Galen is a demon, folks. And me likey.

So Maeve finds out, Galen shows her around Hell, and they have all kinds of sweet, sexy times. Galen was trying really hard for this promotion because only demons of that status are able to marry, and he’s desperately in love with Maeve. So yeah, this could not have been much cuter or sweeter, I am all heart eyes for Galen! The puppies were cute, Maeve is a hilarious hard ass with a touch of dominatrix, and again…GALEN!!!! Loved!

“This is definitely wasn’t what I expected when I swiped right on you. I didn’t think I’d have to learn how to date a demon.”

“I’d say you learned how not to date a demon, if anything.

PD: Me encanta la portada.

SO thankful for an early copy of this book - Lana is an absolute delight of a human and a writer.

It was funny and sexy and sweet and I love Maeve and Galen so much - getting to read their full book has been lovely.

"I love your temper. It's hot."

First of all, I think we should all take a moment to just appreciate the work of art that is the cover of this book. I really hope we get a similar vibe for the rest of the books in the Cautionary Tails series because the art style is wonderful and I just can't get enough of it.

This book was so cute and unexpected but in a good way and I found myself not only swooning over how hot Galen is but also laughing literally out loud over some parts in the book. It was a super quick read and enjoyable and I especially loved the fact that I wasn't constantly stressing out about the relationship!

I think this one is a great book to start you on your monster romance journey!

this book catfished me, unfortunately.

i'm always a sucker for books that have nice cover art, and it didn't hurt that the premise of this also seemed cute and fun. i was excited to read it!

that said, it really missed the mark for me. call me boring, but i was disappointed that like 50% of this book is just sex—i was anticipating a little more substance, and there just wasn't any. i'm sure some readers will appreciate that aspect, but unfortunately, i'm not one of them.

i also didn't really get the sense that the ML and FL had been dating for a year. i don't usually like books where the main couple starts out already together—i need to see them fall in love to really be invested in their relationship—and this one wasn't an exception. i didn't feel any chemistry between them, and it didn't feel like they really even knew each other.

even as individuals, they both fell flat for me. the FL was the type of "feisty" character whose only personality trait is that she makes stupid decisions. this was a lighthearted book, so it wasn't like her stupid decisions had any real negative consequences, but still—her recklessness was enough for me to dislike her from basically the first chapter. does she have no sense of self preservation??? as for the ML: he had basically no personality aside from being a demon and loving the FL, which was just as boring.

all in all, maybe i was expecting too much from this.

3.5⭐️ picked this up as a quick read, which it was, but it left me feeling a little flat? I loved the characters & I loved that we didn't have too much of a slow burn (as the characters are already in a relationship), but I was frustrated. The whole premise was that Galen didn't share his big secret, which most people in any relationship will agree is very annoying. Just communicate people!!

Cute spicy story, but left me with questions.

Maeve and Galen were cute together and their spicy scenes were pretty well done. It was a more domestic love story than I was expecting for one about a demon. I thought the resolution was a bit rushed and there were many unanswered questions about what their relationship would look like in the future, as one of them is immortal and one is human.

Spice: 4/5, moderate spice

Triggers: very brief mention of animal abvse

It was a quick read and had some funny moments that kept me from DNFing it, but I wasn't feeling the energy between the couple, the world-building wasn't there, and the plot was okay. I don't see myself continuing the series at this point.

I give it a 2.5/5 ⭐and a 2.5/5 🌶️ (how I rate spice written in my bio).

The cover is truly stunning, but the book itself truly let me down. I liked the smut, but the descriptions (or rather the lack of thereof) made it next to impossible to imagine anything that happened in the scene. The writing felt chopped, and sometimes I found myself going back to make sure I didn't miss anything. And also, the heroine was very annoying to me. I am not justifying the guy here, as I am a little bit suspicions of how exactly he managed to get that promotion with his communication skills (or rather the lack of thereof); but the girl could have at least confront him ONCE before plunging right into this pathetic clownery sequence.

Indecision swirled in her stomach. Galen was good to her. Should she even be putting him through these dumb trials?

This book was a super cute, quick, steamy read! Maeve, our shameless heroine, starts to get the idea that there's something not quite right with her live-in boyfriend. So what does she do?

How had she never realized it before? Galen was hot as hell, with dark hair and a genuine smile and nice pecs and nicer muscles and an ass you could take a bite out of- okay, we get it. Her boyfriend was hot. But he was very clueless.

The trials were funny and the spice sprinkled through this book was a great, lighthearted escape! I actually really liked how it all went down - for a moment I was worried that Galen was a sweet, delicious MC and I'm glad things rolled out quickly for his sake, after all his hard work to The last bit of the book where he took her to was fun too!

"Did you forget the part where you tried to poison and maim me? I'd say you learned how not to date a demon, if anything."

I'll definitely be reading How Not to Date a Dragon in the coming days!

This was so cute! 🥰

We start this short story with an established relationship of one year between Maeve and Galen. I love a good established relationship story, just because they're rare. Maeve was a kickass lady, and Galen was a total cinnamon roll!!!

I think the miscommunication trope in this story worked well enough simply because it was short and silly and we didn't spend too much time being rom-commy about it before it got boring. It basically resolves by 60%, and there's NO breakup over it.

Another thing I loved was that we got switch scenes of both Maeve and Galen being dominant in the bedroom with safewords, so there was plenty of unique spicy exploration.

Maeve has been dating this guy for a while, they even live together but then he starts acting strange! Determined to figure out what Galen is up to, Maeve follows him one night and discovers - he’s a demon?!

This was so fun & cute! All of the ways Maeve tries to figure out *what* exactly Galen is we’re fun, Galen is such a simp for her, the spice was hot, and the plot was fun! I’ll definitely be reading the rest of this series ❤️

HOW NOT TO DATE A DEMON was certainly spicy and I enjoyed the way Maeve would take the lead in the bedroom, but it was pretty sparse on plot details. I barely know what Maeve or Galen look like, though Galen's demon form was pretty detailed. Also, it wasn't until almost 60% into the book that the author explains that paranormal beings came out to humans years before. That seems like a pretty important piece of world building that was not incorporated well.

This definitely falls on the fluffy side of paranormal romance and while I don't mind that, the stakes were so low that there was hardly any tension. Even Maeve's "monster trials" felt really low stakes. Overall, it was cute and quick but didn't inspire me to read more by this author.

How not to date a demon is a fun short read you should definitely download right now on Kindle Unlimited. This book edges between cute and sweet relationship to some very spicy antics. For a short book there is a lot of spice that's well written.

The book is quite unique and it doesn't take itself too seriously. I did wish there was a little more background and world building to the whole hell and demons and supernatural creatures. But regardless, it was a fun read. When Meave tries to find out what kind of supernatural being he is I laughed a lot.

Glen was sweet and sexy at the same time. He was not what you would expect from a typical Demon. He was a lot nicer haha. I did love their relationship and how they worked and communicated.

If you are in the mood for a fast read that will make you laugh and blush at the same time. This is a great book to speed through.

Lana Kole is a new to me author. I discovered this book on twitter when someone shared some fan art and it somehow got on my feed. Naturally I was very curious and definitely was interested in reading it.

I didn’t know what to expect but for a book that was just over 150 pages it did not read very quick. A lot of their problems could have been resolved by, you know, talking to each other and not assuming shit. I understand why Galen couldn’t say anything, but if he was breaking the rules by dating her in the first place, why not tell her the big secret? Maeve has no excuse, like I honestly don’t remember what caused her to start investigating what Galen was.

All in all, I found myself bored and setting this book down often.

I wish there would have been more Galen POVs, Maeve was getting frustrating the majority of the time.
