The Occuscript

Rate this book
Deep in a cavern, within the mysterious forests of the Wilds, an amazing book is found. Its table of contents will taunt readers as page after page appears frustratingly blank. A select few will find a single leaf visible to them with runes and symbols magically granting all knowledge of a particular expertise. Physicians will cure the infirm, warriors will become individual forces of destruction and dragons will--once again--have their riders. But the titles of the book's last three chapters will attract the attention of powerfully evil forces, fueling intrigues, battles and prophecy-driven quests. Ominously, the last page remains untitled. Onyx-driven folk plot to seize the book for their own dark purposes while the Pearl-driven struggle to fulfill prophecy and deliver it to its required destination. For it is there, in Castle Ironhinge, that the one who must pen The Last Chapter awaits the burden of delivering their world from certain annihilation.

I had high hopes for this book and was excited to read it since I am a fan of fantasy books. However, it took a while for me to really get absorbed into the story, and even then it was still challenging for me to stay with the story. I thought that the overall concept of the book, the land of Gailan, the classic battle between good and evil, people realizing magical powers they never knew they had, was good. I thought they way the characters worshiped gem stones and used phrases such as "by the pearl!" lent a cult feeling to the dialogue. To me, it sounded a lot of the time like they were worshiping an inanimate object rather than trying to following the teachings of a supreme being. There is a lot going on in this book and I feel like some of the details may have been glossed over due to lack of space and trying to jam in too many different things. Maybe things will improve as the series progresses, but I will probably not be reading those books.

This book had a good writing style and the story lined flowed pretty well. The author does a nice job giving the prophecy (even though it plainly states what happens) because only the part of the prophecy that has happened is revealed in the book. I also liked how the author didn't set up the "good" and the "bad" side at the very beginning of the book, it kind of allows the reader to make that decision before it is revealed. The end of the book has a twist that makes you want to read the second book!

I may be a little bias because my uncle wrote this book but it’s still one of my favorite all time books! It was amazingly written, I’ve been trying to convince my Uncle Kerry to write a sequel!
