You never know where you may learn the biggest lessons in your life—it may be in school, in church, or it may even be dancing on stage half-naked in a room full of strangers while clinging to a brass pole for dear life!
Such was the case for this author. In Everything I Need to Know I Learned In Go-Go, Sydnee offers practical skills to become more confident, compassionate and happy. Enjoy, and learn from, her stories from many years of working in Gentlemen’s Clubs. This is personal development with a spin!
Sydnee shares her lessons learned from her mortifying first audition to her rise as manager in a cut-throat world. No matter what your profession, here are tips for anyone wanting to reach their goals. No pasties or thongs required!
This is an awesome book that explores the darker side of society and how the author resisted its pull, highlighting the power of our mindset in determining the quality of our lives. Sydnee's limitless use of humor in how they dealt with the rough stuff and uncanny ability to stay objective throughout reflects the author's strong mindset, reminding us that how we think about our skills and how we deal with different life situations significantly affects our ability to improve our lives. And the best part? They shared all their learnings in a no-BS, honest way that I really appreciated.
What I loved most about this book was the reminder that personal stories matter and that we should all share them. It's a powerful message in a world full of fake stuff online. It's impossible to please everyone, so the most important thing is to tell your story in a way that feels authentic to you. And Sydnee pulled this off effortlessly, in an approachable, non-pretentious way. At its core and worth, it's also the reminder of the things we often take for granted or don't realize until it's too late - Don't let anyone else's opinions hold you back from sharing your truth with the world, the sole purpose of our existence is to strive towards becoming the best version of ourselves that we can possibly be, and that maintaining strong, non-toxic and close relationships is the secret to good health and true happiness (which, by the way, is backed by science researched extensively by Harvard: https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/stor...).
If you're searching for practical advice on personal development that actually works, give this book a read. Seriously, go read it.
I particularly enjoyed the author's voice; self-effacing, confident, and crackling with wit. The stories and characters within are humorous, highly relatable, and readily conveyed with just the right measure of positive enforcement. Looking forward to more!
tldr: save your money and your time, this isn’t the personal development advice you want.
I wanted to like this book. I’m usually a fan of self help books that are “real” - free of toxic positivity and perfect lives… but, while this book may be “vulnerable” as someone claiming to be one of the author’s kids put it in an earlier review, vulnerability alone does not make a good book.
This book is written at (maybe) an 8th grade reading level and peddles questionable life advice that seems to include: 1. Do whatever you want, no one else matters
2. Take responsibility for nothing, and if anyone cares, pee in their food, intentionally give them head lice, or “give them the boot” (yes, those are real things this author claims to actually have done to people)
3. Drop any relationship with anyone who isn’t blindly supportive and call it “self care”
4. Claim everything you do is bound to be criticized because of your career choice, not because it might actually be deserving of criticism
The author seems to keep it together in the first ten chapters or so— there are some mildly interesting stories about her dancing career. But the second half of the book devolves into what seems to be a running criticism of everyone from her life… it’s hard to ignore the “everyone was wrong except me” vibe, and you start to think maybe these are things the author should have hashed out in therapy before trying to make the switch from ex-dancer to “author”.
Two stars for effort— because it’s hard to write and publish your own book. Minus three because some people should probably think twice before doing so.
It is not the usual self-help book, certainly not compared to the ones I have read over the years. You need to approach it with an open mind. Also, if you want to be critical about Sydnee working in a Go-Go bar without an understanding as to the reason why, then give this a miss. And if you have issues or problems with talking about sexuality or are easily offended by strong / rough language you may have some difficulty with this. Something Sydnee warns about right at the start.
If, on the other hand, you manage to look beyond all that, you will find that there are lessons the author learned that helped her to improve herself and reach her goals. These lessons may be of help to you as well.
I do not know Sydnee, but I find it brave from her to write about her life’s journey so far and the things she has learned in order to get ahead and in what she has achieved.
I loved reading the book as it is a breath of fresh air, it has its humorous moments, thus making it very easy to read. At the same time, it has a message and gives an insight on how to go about achieving your goals. She has clear rules for herself on what her limits are, something for yourself to set in what does Go and what doesn’t Go.
I loved this book! I laughed…I cried…and I got inspired. Whoever thought becoming a go-go dancer could teach you so many things?! The hilarious stories Sydnee told kept me entertained all while the author made me think about things I’ve been too afraid to do. This is not your typical self-help book. If you are offended easily by frank talk about sex…or by rough language, this book is probably not for you. I, on the other hand, learned quite a lot about myself and how I feel when I look in the mirror. Sydnee’s book is a definite five star read for me!!!! Some take-aways: “You are only as good as your next achieved goal.” “They say it takes a village to raise a child, but it also takes a village to raise you up to be the person you were put on this earth to be.” “If the people you surround yourself with aren’t pushing you to achieve your dreams and move your life forward, then I DARE YOU!”
You know the saying: "Never judge a book by its cover" Well. This book is not what you think it is. Passing it over because you assume it's contents is going to be a mistake. This book is a warm, funny, sincere and heartfelt journey with solid tips and advice to tackling life's challenges, and the inner battles everyday living throws your way. With some really funny stories, and a few that will make your heart ache. You'll learn a lot about life, and the lifestyles you don't think about. It'll help put a different 'spin' on your perspective about so many things! Definitely recommend this one!
I'd thought this would be funny stories about stripping, but it's full of random advice on joining MLMs and whatnot. I don't know I want self help advice from someone who thinks it's funny to tell stories about serving up food with pee in it, mocking a dancer who had a hard time with a customer, handing a coworker objects that had been in someone's butt, etc etc. Weird living in the past book where stories that are often dull and mean from strip bars are used to support random thoughts about the world.
Funny, raw at times & it's clear the author is authentic because she does not hold back which is a brave thing to do. You can see there's a good heart there & very honest about mistakes that she's made. Don't we all but none of us publish our mistakes so I give big props to courage it took to write this. I'm still laughing at the endless names & terms she comes up with for every body part & crazy shit she's encountered like the repeat customer who would be "beating the bishop at the bar" 😂 I'll leave it to you to find out what she's talking about. Fun, quick read with hilarious stories
This is nasty, she talks about hooking up with (female) customers like that isn't prostitution and she's above everyone else. Not fun like Jenna Jameson's book. She says she had kids at home, crazy to think she wrote this knowing they'd read it someday.
I loved this book! There are so many people in the world that walk through life without a good story. This lady has plenty of stories, lessons about life and has a great sense of humor. Thank you for sharing!
A well-meaning self-help book written by a preacher’s daughter who became a go-go dancer, never compromising her principals and gaining her sense of self. She speaks of the boundaries she set and lessons she learned often through dangerous or questionable circumstances. The book is peppered with cringeworthy go-go stories that are not for the faint of heart. Despite this, it maintains its sense of humour and positivity throughout. Sydnee left the go-go world a richer, more confident woman who could go on to be the mom she always dreamed of being in a healthy, stable, and loving environment. A fun read written by a bright and positive woman.
