Secrets taken to the grave don’t always stay buried.
In No Time to Die , Jenny is devastated by the recent death of her sister, Liza. Looking for a sense of closure, she secretly signs up for the drama camp where Liza died. Jenny knows that someone here holds the key to what really happened to Liza that night, but if she doesn’t find out the truth soon, she may become the next victim.
In The Deep End of Fear , Kate has tried to bury the horrible memories associated with the Westbrook estate. After her best friend Ashley drowned on the estate, Kate vowed never to return. But now, twelve years later, she is drawn back towards the house and that fatal icy pond. There, Kate still feels Ashley’s presence and the past seems to be pulling her back towards Ashley’s life-threatening dares.
I re-read this so I could decide if I'm keeping it in my bookshelf or donating it... and I think it's staying?? We'll see.
No Time to Die: ★★★☆☆ I enjoyed the story but found the ending to be a bit much. It came out of nowhere, going against everything we've seen from that character throughout the book. We got a few vague clues regarding the motive, but no way to connect that to the murderer or any hints that the nice facade was just that: a facade, hiding a ton of anger and aggression. It would've been nice to see them slip up just once.
And there are some issues:
The Deep End of Fear: ★★★★☆ This one was the stronger story in my opinion, but the ending was also a bit theatrical and cheesy. That being said, I enjoyed the romance and how it wasn't the main focus.
Overall: ★★★☆☆ Simple writing and two pretty entertaining stories. I think both endings could've been written better, but it's still enjoyable and super easy to flip through.
Also, Elizabeth Chandler really likes evil monologues.
In No Time to Die, Jenny is distraught at the recent death of her sister Liza. She decides to enroll in the drama camp that Liza was in when she died. But even though all the evidence points to a serial killer as Liza’s murderer, Jenny is starting to get the sense that’s not really what happened. But setting out to find the truth on her own might be a deadly decision. In The Deep End of Fear, Kate returns to her childhood home after her father dies. She takes a job there as the tutor for a young boy named Patrick. She expects to have strange memories of her time a child there, but what she doesn’t expect is for Patrick to have a capricious imaginary friend named Ashley—who has scary similarities to Kate’s childhood friend who drowned. Kate must figure out what is really going on before it’s too late.
Dark Secrets 2 contains two more murder mysteries from skilled author Chandler. As in Dark Secrets 1, Chandler’s stories here take place in or around the town of Wisteria and are filled to the brim with murder, secrets, lies, danger, and an element of the supernatural. All of this makes for a couple of very enthralling reads. Even though the gist of No Time to Die and The Deep End of Fear is extremely similar to that of Dark Secrets 1, I still thoroughly enjoyed Dark Secrets 2. Chandler has this way of drawing the reader into her stories that makes even the most comparable storylines interesting. In addition to fantastically created mysteries, Chandler always includes a bit of romance, which rarely come to fruition until the very end. Although I these romances are very sweet, it bothers me that just as the mystery is solved and the danger has passed, the heroine realizes that she is in love. The validity of these romances has always been a little iffy to me, but I can’t deny that Dark Secrets 2 as a whole is incredibly enjoyable to read.
I recommend Dark Secrets 2 to those who enjoyed Dark Secrets 1 and Kissed by an Angel, both by Elizabeth Chandler, Possessed by Kate Cann, and Dark Visions by L.J. Smith.
The book dark secrets is a very good book it is two books in one and I loved it. it brought you in it when you stared to read it to you could not stop it drew you in. in the first book there was this girl trying to figure out who killed her sister and she was going to acting school where her sister was murderd ansd when you find ouit who it was you will be shocked i rthink the author did a good job on how they set up the book. the secound book there was this girl kate that her friend had died in the pond by the house her dad worked for and she is trying to figure out who killed her and now ios trying to do the same to patrick
If you want a mild mystery story, this is the book you should read. It has two stories in one book and I love the way it was written, it gets better every page and it makes the readers feel like they are detectives. It was unpredictable just like the Dark Secrets 1, mysterious and thrilling.
Try reading her novels, it's really good. :)

REREAD...I love the dark secrets books by Elizabeth Chandler and I had forgotten the plot to both these stories as it’s been years since I last read them. I love the way the book is written and I enjoyed reading these stories. I highly recommend them ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
mendapat buku ini seharga 19rb di PERIPLUS thanks so much, peri pada saat mid-year sale.
may contain spoilers: 1st story "no time to die"
jenny datang ke semacam perkemahan / akademi or whatever yg di khusukan untuk remaja yg punya bakat seni. entah musik, gambar, but esp.acting. disana dia mencoba mencari pembunuh saudarinya, liza. sebelum liza meninggal, dia meninggalkan pesan yg intinya bahwa sewaktu kecil dulu liza pernah melakukan suatu tindakan yg amat sangat buruk (tidak termaafkan) & bahwa dia lagi deket dg seorang cowok cakep bernama michael (liza manggil mike). jenny mencurigai beberapa orang yaitu michael sendiri & salah 1 cowok yg terobsesi ama liza (sorry i totally forgot his name) tapi ternyata semua di luar dugaan. gak cuma ada 1 pelaku tapi 2 & ke 2 orang itu berhubungan dekat sekali. kadang alurnya agak lambat tapi lama-kelamaan juga semakin keren & kept me turning on the pages. jenny is determined, sweet & brave. ada saat dia merasa bersalah karena dia suka sama mike krn dia tahu bahwa liza suka bgt (di tulis di pesan bahwa dia & mike saling jatuh cinta) itu bikin si jenny merasa pikir 2 kali untuk ngedeketin mike. but again semua itu ternyata tidak seperti kenyataannya. mike mike mike <3 meski tidak di sebutkan secara explisit seperti apa rambutnya tapi ku rasa dia punya rambut polem & berwarna hitam, mata biru *drooling* & total sweet. sayangnya dia gak kebagian banyak scene disini *bete* tapi setiap kali dia muncul pasti bakal bikin aku 'aweeeee'. paling suka waktu scene jenny & mike latihan adegan di 'midsummer night's dream'. jadi mike natap jenny dg mata biru cemerlangnya yg menusuk & jenny cenat cenut XD (yg baca juga ikut cenat cenut). overall, bener2 bagus, keren & suspense-nya bikin aku rela begadang sampe jam 1 pagi but really its so WORTH IT !!! end of 1st story's review.
2nd story "the deep end of fear". honestly i like the 1st story better than this. dibuka dg scene kate kecil sedang 'dilarikan' oleh ke 2 ortunya naik mobil. entah untuk alasan apa, aku ndiri juga gak jelas sampe skg. pokoknya ortu kate ketakutan banget. beberapa tahun berlalu. ayah kate udah gak ada sedangkan ibunya pergi ninggalin ayah sama kate tanpa penjelasan apa-apa. nah kate melamar pekerjaan sbg baby-sitter untuk anak cowok bernama patrick. a rich boy. ngenes banget waktu baca apa yg dialami patrick. imagination friend and stuffs. semua yg dialami patrick pernah terjadi sama kate waktu dia masih kecil & teman imajinasi patrick juga ashley yg sama. si ashley ini bener2 PSYCHO. dia suka banget blg 'i dare u' blah blah blah hanya untuk meliat temennya menderita. gregetan ndiri waktu baca & pardon me, aku seneng banget dia mati (oops). pokoknya si kate ini ngerasa bahwa si ashley kembali lagi dari alam baka. akhirnya dia berusaha untuk menemukan pembunuh ashley sebelum keadaan patrick jadi makin buruk. (sumpah ngenes abis). enuf said ya.
demikian review amburadul dari saya tapi harapan memberi gambaran bagaimana buku ini. RECOMMEND & 5 DOUBLE-CHOCO STARBUCKS :D ciaoooooo :*
No Time To Die I personally did not enjoyed this book very much. If i had to rate it seperately i would have given it 3 stars. Overall it was fast paced, and the ending was really surprising.
The Deep End Of Fear Loved Loved absolutely LOVED this one! This book hooked me up from the start and i read it in one sitting. It was far more enjoyable than No Time To Die. The ending was AGAIN "WOAH" REALLY REALLY AWESOME! Though it was a little bit longer than the previous three books i never lost interest in it! I would give this book 5 STARS!!!! *****
I enjoyed reading the second story, The Deep End of Fear. It was more exciting than the first one, No Time To Die. It was a bit draggy though in the middle. But the ending was fine. I didn't expect the twist in the end. I just felt eerie when I read the last two chapters since I had a dream about it... well, it was close to the one in the story, before I even got to that part. It was like having deja vu.
Supernatural, horror, suspense, drama and love story all in one book. :D.
Going into a elizabeth Chandler book this time I felt a little more prepped, like I knew what was coming. Nope. I had no clue. Both these book surpassed my expectations and I LOVED IT SOOOOOOO MUCH! Yeah a crap review but I don't feel like it, lol.
The Deep End of Fear is a book by Elizabeth Chandler. Mary Claire Helldorfer is a children and young adult’s author. She was born in 1954, Baltimore, Maryland. The Deep End of Fear is a murder mystery, a bit paranormal. When Kate’s father dies, he requests to have a ring returned to her childhood home in Wisteria. Kate goes back to her childhood home where there was a fatal accident. She takes a job as a tutor/babysitter for a little boy named Patrick. She gets introduced to Patrick and he was showing her his toys when he introduced his imaginary friend, Ashley. Ashley is her deceased childhood friend. Kate tries to push away the horrible memories of the estate, Mason’s Choice. Patrick does dangerous things that 7 year old Ashley had done and told everyone “Ashley” dared him to. Patrick “plays” with Ashley, a deceased member of the Westbrooke family. Kate doesn’t expect Patrick to have an imaginary friend named Ashley, oddly similar to her dead friend years ago. Creeped out, She ignores it but things get way too unlikely to be coincidental. She realizes she’s in danger and has to figure out what's going on before it’s too late.
The author makes it so that a lot of people are suspicious, so I couldn’t pinpoint who the killer was and because of that, I was surprised who was involved. The author made some people very suspicious and then threw another one in, I expected there to be one person involved but apparently not. One person was the brains of the work, someone did the actual work, and someone only did one crime, trying to poison someone. It triggered me alot when I found out who the killers were. The Westbrooke family always chase after their father’s money. They are always mean to Patrick because he’s the father’s favorite.
I loved the book and I would give it a five. If you like murder and suspenseful stories this is definetely a great book. I highly recommend you to try it. This book reminds me of Natasha Preston, but her books are a bit less paranormal than The Deep End of Fear. They both are murder mysteries. My favorite parts are with Sam and Kate , Sam shares something with her that connects to Kate. Sam’s dad died in a ditch because he was investigating Ashley’s death. Kate Venereli’s mother was suspected of killing Ashley so when Sam found out about who Kate actually was he turned a bit cold to Kate. Is it believable? It is a bit unrealistic. Ashley’s cat coming back to the estate? That was a bit unrealistic. Especially the seven year old boy, Patrick. He’s lonely and has an imaginary friend, yeah but it’s creepy how his imaginary friend is the dead member of the Westbrooke family. It was kind of easy to tell who the killer is after a while because they were helping the main character which was kind of obvious. The people involved in the crime made me really mad. The twists at the end too. I kind of disliked it a bit how it was a bit unbelievable. Some parts of the story were scary but I could not put the book down. It was a good read, definitely recommended!
This book blew me away, like the previous books in the series , i loved the author for so long time ,i always find myself like a detective ,i was for a moment puzzled ,everyone is suspicious , these four books teach me that the murderer is always the one that you don't believe and always suprise you by how and why he/she did the crime , this is the thrilling, amazing mystery that i was searching for it; for i long time . i do recommand this book for you if you are a fan of mild mysteries. NO TIME TO DIE: this first story , jenny is gymnast and hates acting due to fright stage , she takes the decision to go to Wisteria in order to enroll in the drama camp where Liza ;her sister studied and murdered in it , while being there she was haunted with a lot of visions that were strong clues , that helped her decipher the enigmatic death of her sister , taking action , she was about to be the next victim. i loved the plot but the thing that wasn't developed as i expected is the relationship of the main character with Michael (i guess this is how his name is written i'm fimiliar with Mike hhh), it was for me insane , he loved her before seeing her (sorry!!! but this is silly); but i l still loving the story by the way . THE DEEP END OF FEAR: (i want to scream AAAAAAA!!!) this second story talks about Kate a teen girl of 17 years old that decide to go to Wisteria in order to return a ring as her father requested before dying , but by stepping in the Westbrook estate to do the task , all the horrible memories of the past come back ,the ones that she stuggles so hard to bury them , because they were associated with the death of Ashely, her best friend of childhood twelve years ago. Signed as a tutor after, of Patrick a westbrook child of 7 years old , she faced fatal events that were about to drive her to death , these events hold strong proofs and informations about the killer of Ashely about the leaving of her mother and the investigator that was flollowing them( OPSS i guess i begin making a spoilers HAHAHHAHA)...... i enjoyed this book more than the previous ones , i love the main character , the confusing dark story ,i loved that focus wasn't on the romance but on the case ,i loved Sam too .and how the friendship between him and kate in the whole story , this book worth a re_read . i enjoy the book and i highly recommand it.
This young adult bind-up contains books 3 and 4 of the Dark Secrets series. In "No Time to Die", we follow a girl attending a theater camp where her sister died. The mystery of her death remains unsolved, but a supernatural mystery - and a love triangle - complicate things further. In "The Deep End of Fear", Kate returns to the Westbrook Estate where her friend Ashley drowned many years before. Tutoring the young Patrick, she starts to fear the possibility of dangerous family dynamics, and even the paranormal. Will she suffer from another loss? Or will she be the one to die this time?
Both of these books are best described as enjoyable, but not particularly memorable.
The atmospheres in both stories were definitely creepy and tense, which was a major strength. Overall, the characters were interesting, likeable, and made me want to keep reading. However, the second story felt way too drawn out, and at times quite boring.
I appreciate the hint of romance in both stories, although the first story had a bit more romance than the second. I like that there was a paranormal or supernatural element to both mysteries, however it wasn't too intense or overpowering the "real life" mysteries that the characters faced. It was very balanced.
I think that the reveal of the first book's villain, and their motives, was a bit too unbelievable for me. I also found that there were some annoying cliches, such as the whole "villain explains evil plan to the hero" trope.
Overall, these books were interesting, but I'm not interested enough to keep them in my book collection. I recommend this for fans of Elizabeth Chandler's first two Dark Secrets books, and for those looking for a short mystery.
NO TIME TO DIE Jenny is devastated by the recent death of her sister, Liza. Looking for a sense of closure, she secretly signs up for the drama camp where Liza died.
the non-stop action in Chandler's mystery/thrillers have kept them my absolute faves amongst the genre to this day. every character lends into the mystery and the eerie prose keeps me hooked on each word. a special fave: Chandler's protags are always level-headed (often holding jobs, making friends, connecting with parental figures) while still snooping for clues.
this particular mystery held more than a few twists right up to its end. i thought i knew who the Bad Guy was and then i doubted myself all over again. a book i couldn't put down until its explosive end.
IN THE DEEP END OF FEAR After her best friend, Ashley, drowned at Westbrook Estate, Kate vowed never to return. But now, twelve years later, she is drawn back to the house and that fatal icy pond.
i absolutely adored the little boy, Philip, that was centered in the mystery in this story. having worked as a nanny (a role our protagonist, Kate, fills in IN THE DEEP END OF FEAR) i connected quickly with a lot of the work Kate did. that emotional connection made it even harder to fathom the cold attitudes of Philip's family, and the circumstances surrounding Ashley's death.
i didn't like the love interest in this book as much, though I never pay much mind to the love interests in Chandler's mysteries. (they don't play a huge role.) the ending was satisfying and unpredictable, if a little in-line with Chandler's typical format.
First and foremost, I enjoyed this part of the story of the book. I especially enjoyed the cute and sweet interactions between Jenny and Mike. Of course, it was unusual at first that Mike was being weirdly affectionate towards Jenny, since it was stated in the beginning that him and Liza had some kind of a relationship. As the story progress, I had an intuition that Liza had a one-sided love, that Mike had no feelings toward her. I was happy when Jenny and Mike finally got together.
Oh, and Brian felt off to me and I decided that I did not like him. I was annoyed when his character and intention was revealed. I hated how nonchalant he was being in the end. Him and his father could piss off.
Deep End of Fear:
I disliked this part of story of the book. I tried to like it, honestly I did, but it bored me as it progressed. I did not understand what was going on with Patrick and he kept behaving unusually. It got to the point where I got tired of reading his unusual antics. Of course, that was one of the important parts of the story, but it took long to get to the revelation. I ended up breezing through the storyline/plot towards the end, that I had forgotten what actually happened and why did it happen. Forgive me but I could not give the story anymore chance. I basically dnf-ed it…?
note: the only reason I gave the rating a 3 was because I really enjoyed reading the third storyline/plot of the Dark Secret series.

No Time To Die: The reveal of who the killer was actually surprising because most readers assume its one character but it happens to the other, and the suspense leading up to the moment was actually really good. I appreciated the fact that the author could slip in a romance without making it too cheesy or pull it away from the plot, especially since the protagonist tried to clasp her feelings for that person since her late sister used to "date him".
The Deep End Of Fear: AGAIN, the freaking killer(s) always shock me. It was actually really surprising because it made me forget my surroundings and I screamed in Honors ELA and all my classmates looked at me, so I explained that I had just found out who the killer was and they all laughed. In this story too, the protagonist keeps pushing the love interest away until the mystery becomes solved. In this book though, I couldn't pinpoint a direct suspicion, and because of that, I was two-fourths surprised about everyone involved. THIS IS A SORT OF SPOILER, SO BEWARE: Since one was the brains behind the operation, one did the dirty work of killing Ashley, one did the dirty work of trying to hurt Kate, and one only committed one crime, trying to poison Kate. BUT STILL, I WAS TRIGGERED...
I liked the first story, No Time To Die, not because of it’s cliche summer camp plot but how the writer incorporated the “psychic” aspect between the sisters. I think I read a similar plot somewhere but that’s what captured my attention. And also the love triangles were appreciated!
Before I even get to the half part of the second story, I already had my suspects. Although the writer did a good job in making the reader suspect every character, one still may notice differences that’ll make the pieces fit in the later part. I feel like the spark between Kate and Sam were just additional recipe to spice up the story but for me, the real love story is Katie’s love for Patrick. I would love to know how their story, Katie and Patrick’s, ended but I guess the writer wanted the story to end on a romantic note. Overall, the second story got me in circles haha because surely, you’ll doubt every character.
No Time to Die: 3.6 stars. This one was pretty good. Jenny goes to a Theater Camp where her sister went the year before and where her sisters murder took place, going under a different last name so no one knew who her famous family was or who she was as well.. She needed to find out what happen. To say there was a lot of characters in this story is putting it mildly, I have to say the best part of this story is trying to figure out who-dun-it vibe.. you just did not know and to find out who did it was a surprise. Never did guess right. Over all good fun read.
The Deep End of Fear: 3 stars. I really don't have anything to say on this one except is was ok. lots of characters and to many murders to keep up with, to be honest got bored on this one..
I would recommend all the Dark Secret books. My favorite was the Kissed by an Angel and the first Dark Secrets book over all fun reads and for ages 14 yrs and up.. Gina Clabo
This series has been quite interesting! With each story slightly connecting to the others instead of being completely intertwined.
No Time to Die follows Jenny as she returns to the drama camp where he sister had recently died. Hoping for closure, Jenny meets many people who knew and adored Liza. Someone isn't telling the entire truth, and Jenny has no idea the danger she has possibly put herself into.
The Deep End of Fear introduces us to Kate, a teenager who is going back to the place of the untimely death of her younger friend, Ashley. Upon returning to the Westbrook Estate, also known as the scene of the crime, she is greeted with an unanticipated coldness from the people who once had employed her family and shown her love. Patrick, the new child of the house, has taken a liking to Kate but something isn't quite right. There's an eerie feeling in this place, and somehow it's all pointing back to Ashley.
I really love Elizabeth Chandler’s writing. I was captivated by both stories, and I like that they are set in the same place and have some overlapping characters and places.
I think I liked the ending of No Time to Die more than The Deep End of Fear. I was left with several questions at the end of The Deep End of Fear; the mystery was solved, but I would have liked a longer picture of the aftermath. It wrapped really quickly. That’s one thing I didn’t love…the entire thing is solved in the last 10-20 pages, really quickly. Which is exhilarating, but also kind of hard to keep up. And in The Deep End of Fear, it was kind of obvious that she was trying to tie all the loose ends; characters were just explaining what happened in a matter of fact way. That put me off a little.
But overall, I really enjoyed them! Elizabeth Chandler has a talent for building suspense and keeping you guessing until the end.
I liked the first story, No Time To Die, not because of it’s cliche summer camp plot but how the writer incorporated the “psychic” aspect between the sisters. I think I read a similar plot somewhere but that’s what captured my attention. And also the love triangles were appreciated!

Book 1: A girl who is upset about the death of her sister signs up for the drama camp where her sister last attended to snoop around and see what she can find out about her death. I liked this one's murder mystery element.
Book 2: A girl is struggling with memories of her friend that drowned. I think it is weird that both of the second stories in each of these books revolve around drowning, but really drowning has to be one of the most terrible ways to die so it gives it an element of fear that you may otherwise not have.
I like this series much better than I did the angel series by this same author, that is for sure. I like the paranormal/murder mystery aspect of the stories. Not too bad.
I feel like the dialogue was a bit more stilted in this one than the last, but that may just be because I was constantly being pulled away from the book while moving to a new house. Maybe if I head read through the way I usually do, it wouldn’t have been so bad.
One thing I think is so sweet and precious is that each one ends with a kiss between the main pairing. Absolutely adorable. It’s starting to show how young the audience it’s written for is, though, and I think I would have had a hard time getting through it whether I was moving or not. I think I’m just a bit too old for these at this point, but that’s not a mark against the book.
Overall, very good, very sweet, and I hope my kids are readers so they can enjoy these someday.
I don't know if I actually ever enjoyed these books? It feels like the beginning of a story with A LOT of plot development and then it just ends. I will say that I enjoyed The Deep End of Fear a bit more than No Time to Die. I just hate that in Dark Secrets 1-4, the murderer admits EVERYTHING within the third to last chapter. It's just very unsatisfying to read 200+ pages and then the reveal is just HA I DID IT. I can't even say these are truly enjoyable anymore...but I will be reading The Back Door of Midnight. I'll save Kissed by Angel for another time because that was truly my BOOK. Also Ms. Chandler likes slight almost incest.
The plot is not bad at all. The last story really got me spooked from the beginning til the end. In total, I have read 4 of the author's stories and I can safely conclude that the beginning and plot twist are the strong points, but not the ending. All 4 stories have sucky ending. It doesn't make sense and too short. Anddd it left some matters hanging, not that it's important but still. In a way, it's like reading short stories.
I’m not a massive fan on books that are scary, or ghost stories. I’m a little scary cat, I’ll admit it but, the dark secrets series I love. The perfect amount of creepy and ghosty added with mystery. Both of the stories was so capturing, I just had to see how it ended. And considering how short they were as they had to get the story moving, I fell in love with the characters and felt what they felt. Definitely recommend and can’t wait to read the final one.
Finally finished reading a book I bought more than 10 years ago. I would say it’s more suitable for a teenage kid to read (as I was back then). I did not really enjoy the first story of the book(I would rate 2/5) however I did on the second story(4/5). The author did a great job on keeping the readers on their toes. The romance part was a little awkward for both stories though, it just felt forced and unnatural but then again this is not a romance novel.
