In terms of practical knowledge (for a beginner/intermediate artist) this text was lacking, but in terms of inspiration and general or theoretical knowledge, it more than made up for it. Pipes covers different mediums, perspectives, and techniques -- what they are or how to identify them, but not necessarily how to execute. Sure, now I know what trompe l'oeil is, but how do I accomplish it? Darned if I can figure that out...

Not only is this an excellent introduction to design, it's one of the best textbooks I've ever read.
