Midlife is full of surprises. Not all of them are working for me. At forty-two I've had my share of ups and downs. Relatively normal, except when the definition of normal changes ... drastically. Possibly Four months of wallowing in embarrassed depression should be enough. I'm beginning to realize that no one is who they seem to be, and my life story might be spinning out of my control. It's time to take a shower, put on a bra, and wear something other than sweatpants. Difficult, but doable. With my friends--real and imaginary--by my side, I need to edit my life before the elusive darkness comes for all of us. The plot is no longer fiction. It's my reality, and I'm writing a happy-ever-after no matter what. I just have to find the write hook.
Robyn writes because the people inside her head won’t leave her alone until she gives them life on paper. Her addictions include shoes (the expensive kind), Coke with extra ice in a styrofoam cup, and bejeweled reading glasses. A former professional actress, she now lives in the south with her family and too many animals to count. Writing gives her a chance to have a job where working in her P.J.’s is acceptable. Charming, funny, adorable all rolled into one. I love books like this and for the first time reading a book by Robyn Peterman I was pleasantly surprised.
Clementine our leading lady is a writer, so of course I loved this book, but the adventures are around her magic ability and her family, friends and characters, her book characters are her 'imaginary' friends that are not so 'imaginary' to her because of her gifts.
A fun book full of all the things a fun book should be filled with and I can't wait to get my teeth into the next one, there was a bit of an ending that deserves to be followed through so I'm picking up the next book right away!
The Write Hook by Robyn Peterman 1st book in My So-Called Mystical Midlife series. Paranormal women’s fiction. Cliffhanger. Clementine is recovering after catching her husband “in the act” of having an affair. While the divorce is pending, strange people are invading her house and saying weird things. Trying to write her next bestselling novel is a problem. Friends and family come to the rescue. Some only she can see! That’s ok. As long as her book gets written and her divorce goes through, she’s going to be just fine.
Hysterical, irreverent and laugh out loud antics in this midlife women’s paranormal novel. Witches, magic, and a little bit of weed from Aunt Flip make this a delight to read. I’m so looking forward to the next book - 8/23/21.
“I was officially—on a trial basis—the new woowoo juju wrangler slash magic she-devil slash voodoo hag supervisor.” Excerpt From The Write Hook by Robyn Peterman
It was oh sooo freaking good... So Robyn Peterman announces she is starting a new series and I’m like give me, give me, give me1!!! Buuuuut I had to wait and oh what a wait it was... But then I finally had the book, it was on my kindle, it was downloaded and I got to curl up and read, and read, and read... Do you know what I found??? I found so much awesomeness, loads of laughter and hilarity, I found new and wonderful characters!!! I found a place I want to go back to many times... In other words I found a new book home, I found a happy place where I got to fully enjoy myself and never wanted to leave, even though all my other favourite books would be jealous lol that’s what I found in The Write Hook... An amazingly wonderful and seriously funny adventure...
I’d been seeing magical midlife books popping up over the years and, while they always sounded interesting, there was always a book that held my attention more. I’m not sure what drew me to this one, maybe Clementine being a writer, or her characters coming to life but I’m happy I picked it up. The cast was fun, Clementine’s characters hilarious, and Clementine herself great. I loved watching her roll with the crazy and come out of the funk caused by her cheating ex. I also thoroughly enjoyed the explanations she came up with to explain her tendency to start talking to characters only she can see, or when she was attending a magical support group. This book ends on a cliffhanger, and I can’t wait for the next one. I’m curious to learn more about Clementine’s powers, how she’ll get out of this current predicament, what will happen with the darkness and whatever else the author will come up with. (I’m curious about the lives of the humans and characters alike.) Definitely recommend this one.
Can't believe I just finished this book and it was fun. Not great, but fun. I was enjoying it. Then the author committed one of the most heinous sins, in my mind, that an author can commit against a reader. The book ended with a CLIFFHANGER!! How disgusting is that? Well. Anyone who reads any of my reviews knows what happens now. I will never again buy or read anything with this author's name on it. And I will tell all of my Goodreads friends and other friends what kind of a two- timing author she is. She obviously has no respect for her readers, since she seems to think a cliffhanger is the only way to get anyone to buy her next book. I don't know how this plot ending will resolve, but please know I will NEVER know, and what's more, I don't care.
I appreciate intricate storylines and dazzling, multi-faceted characters. I also have an affinity for the skill it takes authors to develop settings and plots. Many books have these elements and are easily devoured, especially by voracious readers. Likewise, some do not. The Write Hook is one of those books with a few elements that made my reading experience tedious. I struggled to get through this book and only continued reading because of my reading challenge goal.
First, Clementine's cat is called "Fat Stella". Then, she is "Thick Stella". When I first saw "Thick Stella", I immediately went back to make sure that I had the cat's original name. Perhaps a typo? Then, came the stereotypes of her friends. "While Jess was short, dark and delightfully curvy, Mandy was tall like me. She was a striking blonde with piercing and intelligent hazel eyes..." Noticeably, the 'dark' one's description is vague and boring. But the 'blonde' one gets the use of vibrant adjectives. Jess behaves like Clementine's personal assistant and Mandy is a lawyer, wife, and mom who is ready to return to the courtroom.
Another aspect of this book is the cliches: “See ya. Wouldn’t wanna be ya." "Never look a gift horse in the ass." "Cool?” “As a cucumber.” “That’s my name, don’t wear it out." Even the "You're so old that..." Yes, there was a point when Clementine and It became annoying and monotonous.
Dare I venture into the woo-woo juju club? This word is another way to say "magic". The club consists of only women. And there is a 'darkness' coming, yet these ladies do not know how to recognize the darkness. I also do not get the 'catsup' that must be present for the ladies to consume on their meat Twinkies and other foods during every meeting.
There are a few typos that can be easily ignored or make the reading experience more frustrating. The errors may only be in the Kindle Format.
There is some good. For example, Clementine, an author, can see and converse with characters from her books. It's also cool that some of the characters tell Clementine how they want to appear in the next book. Some threaten her, and others act like her stylists and counselors.
Also, Clementine is somewhat relatable. She's successful, smart, financially savvy, caring, business-oriented, and a decent friend. Her Aunt Flip and Cheeto are also a 'hoot'. Definitely characters worth keeping. But I bid adieu to this series.
My new favorite series of Robyn Peterman’s! She really nailed it this time. Clementine is an author whose characters come to life for her. Literally. Lots of fun new characters that only Robyn Peterman can imagine. Can’t wait for more!
So. Much. Fun! This author is quickly becoming a favorite of mine, everything I have read by her has just been so entertaining and just truly so much fun. I can't wait for book two of what promises to be a quirky, fun loving series!
There were a few parts that were cute, with the MC talking to her characters and the little girl. The toddler level cat fight "insult" exchanges I thought would kill me. Then the repetition of certain phrases that make you question why you keep reading. Especially when it ends like that.
The Write Hook My So-Called Mystical Midlife, Book 1
I Picked Up This Book Because: Craving a comfort read.
Media Type: Audiobook Source: Hoopla via HC Public Library Dates Read: 5/24/24 - 5/27/24 Rating: 4 Stars Narrator(s): Hollis McCarthy
The Story: A wonderful world that seamlessly blends magic and the power of friendship with a dash of “crazy auntie” for comic relief. And you need relief when your husband is a dirty cheater, his mistress is out to get your house and suddenly you can see all the fictional characters you’ve created in your time as an author.
The Random Thoughts: “Black and Decker Pecker Wrecker” has to be the best title I’ve ever heard of.
I loved everyone in the book, excpet Darren and Jenny Jingles (Obviously) .
I sincerely need a Cassandra and the gang in my life. Life would never be boring. How awesome would it be to bring to life the characters I like? I liked the powers of the other witches too - Turning into a cat? (McGonagall vibes) , transporting , turning invincible ? Woww
I loved Clementine's sass. Her smack down of Jenny in the salon was so awesome!!! I would have given anything to be there with a pack of popcorn in hand.
I really enjoyed this book, the characters are quirky and we'll written, the story is humorous and has such potential, I am really looking forward to the rest of the series.
If you like a book to end without ending, this is the book for you. It was a huge disappointment to only have half a book. Did the author give up? The next book won’t be released until August (4 months away). It feels like the author or Amazon published half of a book just to meet a deadline.
I somehow feel cheated. I loved the characters and funny, quirky story. But, really!!! What kind of author creates a book without having a conclusion? I’m out.
I’m too irritated to invest anymore in Amazon & kindle-unlimited. This is not the first half done book released just to fill a quota. I would only recommend this book if you can get both books. Most people don’t want to read a book that’s has a plot line that is only 2/3 completed.
This book was a laugh out loud kind of book. Enjoyed it very much, Funny, characters and a good twist to the storyline. I can’t wait until the next instalment.
This relatively new genre of midlife tales has intrigued me from the get go. Midlife character faces some type of life altering situation, and then navigates the road towards an uncertain future. This is where the intrigue sets in. The authors build on that with their own unique writing style and flair. This book one took the unique factor to a level ten! The MC has unique abilities that right now, still hasn’t fully been disclosed. The supporting characters also are unique and both the good and bad apparently gain their “ special-ness” through trauma. I applaud that the MC remains rooted in “ adulting” through every temptation. This book one is golden, I’m hooked, and pleasantly happy to await book two. All my reviews are always voluntarily written.
This book was so kooky and fun that I couldn't put it down! I LOVED the crazy cast of characters in Clementine's life...the real life ones and the ones only she could see! With so many people running around the dialogue and story was nonstop. I laughed out loud at some of the ridiculousness coming out of their mouths. The book really made me think about some of my favorite paranormal authors and what they would do if put in the same situation as clementine, which added an extra layer of funny to the story. The book does end on a cliffhanger of sorts. I was a little disappointed not to get a concrete ending, but I loved everything else about the book so much that I will overlook it.
Once again Robyn Peterman delivers. This book is funny, relatable and has a cliffhanger ending. The characters are all "human " they behave like real people and Robyns' writing is sublime. This is a laugh out loud story and an excellent introduction to Robyn Peterman.
This book was awesomely hilarious. I am in love with this new series. The characters are so descriptive and fun. The 3 best friends relationship is so cool, reminds me of my own 2 bf from high school. The older women are the funniest. Cannot wait for the next book to see what happens next.
The Write Hook is the first book in the PWF series My So-Called Mystical Midlife by Robyn Peterman. This book is laugh out loud funny and relatable with lines such as “Whatever. I had on clean clothes and no hair on my legs. I was winning.” I continually thought about all my favorite authors being barraged by their fictional characters. I also imagined how awesome it’d be if some of the fictional characters I love suddenly materialized in my life. Clementine Roberts created some fun fictional characters and it was pure joy to see her realize that and also question some of her choices. I cannot wait to see how this story gets wrapped up.
I have been waiting for this book to come out. And Robyn Peterman didn't disappoint me. I adore Clementine, her family, and crazy friends. I am absolutely loving the new genre of older female and male characters and their second acts at life. The write Hook is filled with humor and heart and I can't wait for the next installment to series.
It takes only my crazy work schedule to keep me from finishing a Robyn Peterman book in two days tops, and usually within a day. Because this first book of her new PWF series is all sorts of fabu and I was ruing my lack of time to devote to reading!
My only complaint: why did the book end????? I would've taken so much more of Clementine, Flip, Cheeto, gorgeous Seth, the old ladies club, and the awesome besties!
Once again, Robyn Peterman knocks it out of the park!
WOW! What a crazy fun book. Ms Peterman's writing never fails. This book is off the wall. Out of left field. Unique. Whatever you want to call it, I loved it. This story is unlike anything you've ever read and I'm looking forward to reading more like it.
It’s hard to not like any book that comes out of Robyn Peterman’s imagination and this one delivered. Can’t wait to see what happens next. 🤓❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️📚
This is the first book in the My So-Called Mystical Midlife series written by Robyn Peterman. This is a new great series, Clementine is a writer and going thru a messy divorce, she caught her husband cheating her with the “weather hooker”. She also thinks she is going crazy because the characters from her books keep paying her a visit. This book will keep you reading until the end and end up staying up all night reading it. I can’t wait to read the next book in this great series.
This is my first book by the author Robyn Peterman The writer Hook. This book was so much fun to read and I loved all of Clemetines kooky friends the real ones and the ones only she can see. This book had me laughing at so many parts throughtout it. I didn't want to stop reading it. The books ends in a cliffhanger. But on the brighter side I now have something to look forward to reading come August. I cant wait to get my hand on the second book and find out what happens to Clementine and all her kooky friends.
I'm not big on writing reviews but this time I need to. I loved this book. The characters are great and the dialogue is hysterical. I wish I could hang out with the main character, Clementine, and everyone else every day. The only thing I'm not happy about is that the next book isn't out yet. Until then I'll read book book a few times again. It's just that good.
