As a technical writer, I needed a reasonably up-to-date book about XML. I need to know enough about the uses of XML but not so much about any one particular use example. I'm about 2/3rds of the way through and I can tell you this is a goodie. One of the ways I judge a technical volume is by the size and scope of the index, because I need to be able to locate information quickly -- this book has a nice fat index. It is accompanied by a CD with XML-related utilities. Read this if you need to understand the use and rules of XML but don't want to be overwhelmed by case studies.

I have yet to read a really great book on XML, but if you're looking for an intro to XML then you could do worse than this book. It will get you introduced to the concepts and even how to weild them in some interesting ways, although I think if you're really interested in XML then possibly Docbook might be a better entry point. Could be just me but I find the abstract concepts in this book a little hard to follow even now, and I'm not too bad with XML and XSL.
