Early one morning, the world ended. The devastating Alpha Event rewrote the very laws of reality itself, transforming peaceful cities and communities into sprawling hellscapes filled with flesh-eating zombies - and worse!
For Daniel, a Zombie Apocalypse couldn’t have happened at a worse time. If he’d been back at the farm, he might have stood a better chance than most. Instead, Daniel woke up in a distant hotel room armed with nothing but a hangover.
To add insult to injury, as he and other survivors shelter for safety in their hotel, Daniel discovers another misfortune. To help guide them through the horrors of this new reality, each suvivor is supposed to have been grafted with an interface - a guide to help them level up, develop their skills, and better understand the world around them.
Daniel’s is broken.
Nevertheless, this new reality has gifted Daniel with other strange, new powers - powers which could enable him to unite what other survivors they can find into a force capable of surviving in this cruel, new world.
Kernal is the first book in the Broken Interface series, set in Alex Kozlowski’s Alpha Physics Universe.
Style. Single third person POV, LITRPG, with gore, adult themes but no explicit sexual content.
Alex first fell in love with both computer games and writing when he was on a scholarship completing a Bachelor of Science majoring in Physics. After graduating and getting a job, I put the whole being a novelist to the side while that pesky thing called life got in the way. A career in banking project managing the delivery of complicated quantitative applications resulted. Very stereotypical; • Boring job as a banker - tick, • Suburban home - tick • Three kids - tick • Two dogs - tick • You get the point. A little thing called a global pandemic then came along and gave Alex a chance to return to his dream of becoming a writer. Having recently read a variety of LITRPG books, it was a genre that he was excited to explore in order to create a world that readers could immerse themselves into. With the familiarity of the gaming world gained from playing WOW, Skyrim, Fallout amongst others, there is simple joy in creating an imaginative magic filled world that is at everyone’s fingertips. In his writing, Alex aims to capture the feeling that he loves of being able to put yourself into a gaming world, develop your character and exploit the rules to the fullest.
While this book starts off with the MC having a one night stand who ends up saving his life by sharing her interface (thus the broken interface) it only serves to explain why there is not a solid foundation between the two important characters. This is also why I would not recommend it to people who would have to explain a one night stand to their children. Other than that I really enjoyed the book, was going to hold off on it since I was not wanting yet another book series in the hurry up and wait stage. But it was 800+ pages how could I just let it sit there.
My one real complaint about this book is there is a chest in the last few chapters of the book, that is not opened before the end of the book. Its like when you have to sit through the cut scene (but one that lasts months) after killing diablo in order to see what goodies (vender trash) he dropped.

The first half of this book was difficult. I was close to deleting it and finding something new. The trap design phase? Awful! A lot of self monologuing with the main character. A lot of the main character explaining what's happening. The whole "show not tell" thing really applies here. I couldn't believe it was the same author that wrote the original Alpha physics series (that I absolutely recommend if you're into gamelit).
Around the halfway point things really turnaround though. I devoured the second half in one sitting, and if I could find the author I would blackmail him into giving me every page of the next book as it's written ( if you're reading this AK, maybe we can work something out ;) ).
I’ve read almost every good of this genre out there, I’m an avid reader and always have been. I came across this genre several years ago and have been obsessed with it since then. I can honestly say this book rates as one of the top of the genre that I have read so far, can’t wait for the next!
I am a massive fan of Mr Kozlowski. The Alpha Physics event series was terrific and is easily in my top 3 series along with the Shirtaloon series He who fights monsters and M H Johnson's Silver fox series. I have finished Kernel and am currently half way through Sprout. I had high expectations for this new offshoot series but am sad to say that i am underwhelmed. I understand that this book series is going in a slightly different direction giving a more in depth exploration of the character relationships and how they develop but I have found myself losing interest during this exploration. Alex spends a lot of time describing how Dan interacts with his bonded pet mouse. An explanation is essential but for me far too much time is devoted to how a greedy mouse repeatedly negotiates for rewards whilst performing acrobatics in superhero outfits. Once again I found myself bored with this detail and skipping these descriptions completely. They lend very little to the story. There are interspersed chapters supplying a commentry from the aliens supervising the Alpha event. To me the dialogue is almost childish which you would not associate with superior alien species. I no longer read them and jump ahead to the next chapter. I appreciate that the author is trying a different writing approach in this series but to me it is detracts from the story. I understand that an amount of explanation is required but for me less is more. As it stands i am not sure if i will continue with this series.
I have to be honest, I had avoided reading this book for quite some time. I didn’t know what to expect from the concept of a broken interface. I remembered, reading a book similar where a characters interface didn’t function properly. It was a good book as well. I figured I’d get the same thing. Boy was I wrong. Without spoiling anything I would just tell you this. This is a long book with depth action good story and pacing. I’ll be the first to admit they do a lot of the same things in this book but it never gets boring. It is nice to see the character grow develop and then you wonder what’s next. This is one of those books for after reading 737 pages. I’m going right to the next book.
MESSAGE TO THE AITHOR
I always write a note to the author as well now this is spoiler, heavy. Man, this was a great book. I didn’t know what to expect, but I loved how you gave us a unique environment for the story to take place in. I’ve read the post apocalyptic LITRPG’s before I’ve never thought once about one taking place in a hotel. I had to completely rethink how battleships work. While on the topic of battles, I do have to say man I feel the characters are a bit under powered here. Even the MC he doesn’t have super strength or super speed he has traps. Don’t get me wrong he got stronger that was great to see, but it felt, a little too lucky for them to even have survived. I mean I just felt like the world was too apocalyptic around them. Like literally, there was no hope. How could they ever get out of this mess. I don’t know how to say it I just think they’re a little too weak. Not that I want them trumps in enemies, but I do want to see them gain some strength and be able to hold their own. I look at the enemies out there, and I just say they’re dead.
Not one of the things I’m hoping to see is that broken interface get fixed. That’s what I think. Really would be nice. Who’s gonna face might be broken but either fix it or let him develop some new interface with his core. Lastly, I thought it was great to see Lost in a story Here people died and see that the MC was affected by it. I know all of the people that died it here got to me a little bit. I wasn’t shedding tears or anything but I saw how dire things were. One final note, I am concerned with so many of these classes people chose that are not combative. I know they’re necessary, but to me when the post pop elliptic things started happening. I couldn’t see why someone wouldn’t choose a combative class now when I find out they got to make a choice. It seems weird very weird that someone would choose to be a cleaner. I could see if it was just thrust upon them but even then I don’t see the use of these classes and why they’re even available not when something can literally kill you you would think only combat classes would be available. Maybe you have the other options as sub classes, but anyway that uses a non-combat class is pretty much dead unless they can get protection. I think it’s a bit of a flaw to be honest. I would choose a combat class and just learn to cook or live in a filthy room. Unless I could see some reason that these non-combat classes can do some extraordinary things. You know like make food for 5000 people from nothing. Yes, something that biblical in nature. Anyway, loved the book absolutely loved it. I’m going to go read the second book and I will follow your Webseries on RoyalRoad. I become a Patreon subscriber when I see more recent postings beyond book 3
I think I really like the writing of Alex Kozlowski.
Maybe it is an Aussie thing, but I have read many Australian authors that didn’t click, but the two series of Kozlowski’s I have read do.
I am not a review that summarises the plot, go read the book and find that out.
This is an engaging LitRPG book, as is the other series, where the RPG bit makes sense in a why the interface is here way that anchors the books better than a “going into the matrix”, or “whisked to another dimension”, or “aided and went for another go round in a magic world”.
I am at the point where I am not sure if this is a Tower Climb sort of series or not, which is good, since I want more than the early LitRPG gave me.
This is good writing with good character development, reasoned goals, and more.
The light romance sub-plots are a relief to ridiculous harem style drivel, or straight line main plus amazingly coincidental alliance building romances with almost telepathic coincidence of goals. I don’t know where the romantic thread will end up, and that’s nice.
Nice bits of tension, unexpected outcomes, side quests, sub plots, fleshed out supporting characters, without obvious tropes (ato me at least).
Very much looking forward to book 2 of this and more from Alex Kozlowski.
Ivey is a hookup. Why is Daniel giving her extra value outside of her abilities?
Ivey was a hookup so why is Daniel treating her like a long term life feature in a romantic fashion? Also whose room was it at the start? It suggested it was Daniel's room. And that it was an expensive hotel which suggests Daniel's farm is crazy successful. I don't want to see Ivey and Daniel together. She's bitchy, I also don't think Daniel and Tamara should become a couple. And I think Tamara and Jayden should reevaluate their relationship and end it mutually. For all his faults, Jayden is just afraid and it's okay to be afraid. He is not a bad person. Daniel should be a bit more compassionate when it comes to being afraid. A right good inspirational talk about fear would and could do wonders for Jayden. Especially if it's backed by a mind resistance trait. Daniel should also be able to repair and fix his interface. There's a lot I have to say. I hope I'm not being too bothersome.
Near completely separate from the other series. Can easily be read without knowing ‘Alpha Physic’ exists, but there is a bit of residual knowledge that helps to fill in things this MC hasn’t figured out yet.
I like an MC that’s not afraid to get his hands dirty, add an author that is willing to kill supporting characters. Keeps the story from getting bloated.
The MC does spend a lot of time in his own head. Some of this can be explained by the Machinations of the secondary MC.
Speaking of the secondary MC, it is both amusing and clever having it be dismissive of humanity while still trying to be useful.
I am definitely going to be buying the sequel. While there was a slow build at the beginning it certainly ended powerfully.
The writing is clean and clear, with few interruptions of the flow of reading. Multiple levels of manipulation occur between characters, enemies, characters and enemies, and a somewhat coherent alien operative. If you hate psycho thrillers, give it a try, anyway. There is a rich tactical and strategic struggle with battles and gory, ultra physical melee slaughter. The hero is such a relief, fallible, utterly aware of his own mistakes and painfully driving himself through a brutal personal growth, yet also determined to save every human he can. I recommend this for adult readers. The combat is gamer level, but the ethical and moral concepts seem intended for mature appreciation.
This one's got a neat twist--the MMC doesn't have his own interface, and the advantages and disadvantages of that are substantial. The monsters, here, are innovative. The trapped in a tower trope is used so well. Character interactions are terrific, for the most part. The exception is the love interest stuff. I know where the author's going with the 'who do I love' stuff, but it feels awkward and overdone and does not make me happy. But the other relationships are great. And to have an actively narcissistic interface PoV? I half love and half hate that one, but it's not boring.
What’s in the chest?!? Really good apocalypse litrpg. Good blend of powerful mc but still only barely strong enough to prevail. The scope of the threat makes the future seem bleak. Be interesting to see how this plays out.
As the title says this is a review for Kindle Unlimited and as such is a reflection of my enjoyment of the book and in no way reflects cost to value analysis.
I loved this book, almost as much as I loved Alpha Physics! The character development and reveal of the dynamics as they form is just so genuine and natural that you can feel where the conflict makes sense and the twists are great. I don't resonate with the main character in this one as much as I do with the other series but it's not a failing of the character but that I veiw the world in a different perspective and I can still enjoy the characters.
I love this genre and am enjoying this story a lot. Daniel is a great character. He isn't OP yet but is headed in that direction. I think Tamara, Dave, Ivey and Jennifer are going to be more important as the story progresses. The new family from the penthouse will be important too. Just have to wait till the middle of February to see what happens next! Alex, write fast! 😀
I realise personal taste will colour my views, but for me, this is a great book with an enjoyable story. Supported by the relationships interplay that elevates it further. The jury is out on the autistic AI and I shall see whether it grows on me. Interesting non the less. I find it difficult to think any reader of this genre not enjoying this and would recommend.
A lot of stuff going on in a small space. Definitely interesting and fun characters. Even if one of them annoys me tremendously, hoping there is a purpose behind it. Anyway, the intro into this universe was neat and a unique take on the “System” initialization. Like the MC and majority of the rest. World building isn’t real fleshed out yet but that is to be expected with the initial introduction to a new series. Can’t wait to start the next one.
I liked this book a lot. It did seem to drag in places though.
I also wanted to smack the living crap out of two of the characters (without giving too much away, Jayden and the AI.) And the ending was just sort of there.
So you may want to wait until more books of this series are available.
I loved everything about this book. The reliability to characters, the amount of detail put into abilities. I love the ability to grow and manipulate wood always wanted it(well plant life but he hasn't got there yet)Especially the consistency with the other series. One of my new favorites I can't wait to read more.
Great start to the next series in the Alpha Physics world. New approaches to the characters, interfaces, monsters and the physical location make this new take fresh and compelling. Love reading litrpg from Aussies about Aussies. And even better it's in Melbourne!
Can't wait for the next in the series. Great job Alex
Alex Kozlowski has rapidly become one of my favorite authors.
This book starts off a new series in his world and it does it with a bang. It's absolutely fantastic, with real characters and it actually delves into some of the mental effects of what happens when your world ends and everything is suddenly violence and destruction.
great start to a new line in the Apolcalyptic Melbourne saga
It’s a litrpg genre but doesn’t get bogged down with reader reading stats. Story flows smoothly with a few interrupting reports from a self grandizing interface so out of touch with the reality it’s imbedded in, that reports are comical.
The first half of the book was a bit painful. The MC was an indecisive pansy and his “girlfriend” was incredibly overbearing. Everything seems to shift halfway through. Not really clear why. But it gets much better.
This one was really good. I was fully engaged the whole time. Excellent writing and exciting story line. (His first series is good too, if you haven’t yet, check it out.)
Dont know how this book got so many high ratings because I could not even get a quarter of the way through it before I gave up on it! It made no sence at all, just not a good book!!
As indicated, I was unsure about this book at first, but then it's subtly became evident. I like the characters and their mix of good and bad. This has a new world with different ethics. I like this book immensely.
The quality of Alex’s writing has improved so much over his books and now combined with his wonderful setting, interesting characters and non-stop action, you get one of my favorite books of the year. Looking forward to book two.
Another great book to go with this growing series! What a great start, already see some possible plot twists. Looking forward to more books in this series!!!! Absolutely enjoyed reading this one.
So, I am really enjoying this series so far. Take a known and throw in a twisted unknown. Makes for a different storyline and feel, but I am enjoying it
This was just a really fun and unusual storyline. There was always a twist so you never exactly where it was going to go next. Looking forward to the next in the series.
I have much enjoyed Alex kozlowski's alpha particle world setting, and was quite pleased to discover that there was in fact another series available to read!
A little slow which is odd considering all that is going on but maybe it’s just the author trying to figure out the pacing. I like the world and the magic system but it all falls a little flat.
