As someone who learned how to program computers when I was a child, I loved the idea of this book when I saw it at a favorite book review site. I think it failed on execution, though; a child could still certainly get a lot out of it.
The execution problems are essentially twofold. I think the author talks down to children or tries to be too funny. Perhaps both. But whatever type of tone he is trying to convey just doesn't work. The more serious problem is that parts of the book are aimed directly at the child and other parts are directed at an adult who might be helping them. This is actually great, but the author makes no transition between these two sections. For instance, the single introduction starts off talking to the child programmer, and in the next paragraph with no transition whatsoever starts talking to the parent helper. The author could have given two introductions and marked them that way, like “Introduction for the Future Programmer.” Or something along those lines. And then do the same throughout the book. It was a bit jarring to read along in the “hey, kids” tone he was trying to keep up while talking with the kids and then to switch without any sort of transition at all to a straight-up, serious section meant for adults.
Aside from this, the content itself is fascinating. When I learned to program back in the 80s on a Commodore 64, I wouldn't have been able to imagine what the new programming world could be like for children. Scratch looks like it's a lot of fun, and it certainly looks like it teaches good programming principles. If you have a young child who's interested in learning how to program, this could be the perfect gateway to future programming.
