I was on the wrong track on my dissertation, and picked up this book to help me figure out what the issues were. It’s well written, easy to understand, and did a better job of explaining the process than my school, committee or advisor did. YMMV on the application given your school’s approach, but it was a lifesaver for me.

It's more American oriented than I expected but it covered all you need to know about thesis and disserations thoroughly. It includes guides for the educator too. However, I did not find it useful personally.
