Born to non-farmers in a California farming community, Mac Barnett now lives near San Francisco. He's on the board of directors of 826LA, a nonprofit writing center for students in Los Angeles, and he founded the Echo Park Time Travel Mart, a convenience store for time travelers.
As I was reading this my daughter told me to quit laughing. She hasn’t gotten her turn to read it yet, but I’m certain she’ll love it like I did. I feel like I can’t truly objectively rate this just because I love Mac Barnett and Shawn Harris so much that how could I be not be over the moon with it? (Pun definitely intended - it takes place on the moon.) Really though, the adventure in the story was so fun and the pictures made me chuckle. I loved new and old characters.
Read aloud with my kids in preparation for a live event with Mac Barnett and Shawn Harris. This was a lot of fun and we are very excited to see one of our favorite authors in person soon!!
I actually read this on the way to a reading with Mac Barnett and Shawn Harris, and it was hilarious. I love Mac Barnett and Shawn Harris and before I even saw the book I knew it was going to be good. 5 stars for sure. This book was hilarious.
Kids will slurp this story up! It’s a graphic novel sequel as weird and action-packed as it’s pizza series partner. I would do anything to be in the room with these two as they create together… I can only imagine the contagious laughter.
"my reign will not be cut short by soup." pg. 25 moon queen
me and brother were perusing the local library and came across wonderbooks. lowkey both of us were amazed at the progress audiobooks have had, because back in the day you had to borrow and physical and audio copies separately and then also play the cds. this was in all in one special! he borrowed this in his mock-serious way and neither of knew this was the second book in a series.
flashforward a couple days, he read it while waiting during his chauffeur duties and then told me to read it. the read-along mode slayed v hard. we love the voice acting and sound effects. the art is also uber cute, like omg just look at the bunny.
moon queen was obviously my favourite character, like what an icon. the villains were masterful and i was surprised at the bernice ending. very fire twists and turns. first cat honestly does not do a lot so that's lolz.
will have to go back and read the first book now LOL. will only be calling fruits glumpfoozles in the meantime.
This book was the most anticipated book in our household. If given a choice of the next book added to our home library would be this book.
We all really liked The First Cat in Space and the Soup of Doom. It included the main cast of the 1st book with some new faces too. The characters tell the story in a humorous and engaging way that made us want to read it all in one sitting. Actually, that’s exactly what we did! We couldn’t put it down. The illustrations and words were easy enough to be comprehended by my 6 & 8 year old. If your child is not reading on their own they would still be able to enjoy this book if you read it to them.
I want to thank Harper Collins for the chance to read this book, I was so excited to be approved. You made me the cool parent. We are looking forward to reading the next book in the series together.
After successfully saving the moon once, the Queen of the Moon is having a big feast, but her soup doesn't taste quite right. She realizes that it's been poisoned and someone is out to depose her monarchy. She calls upon the only heroes she can trust, and while the First Cat in Space is ready and willing, Loz 4000 had a bad experience and is hiding away in a glumpfoozle orchard. The plot twists as old rivals reappear and unexpected characters pop up in strange places. But if the Queen can't find the cure in time, the moon may just end up in the hands of Bernice!
This book is a whole tangle of silliness, overdramatics, and puns, making it the perfect light read for anyone who doesn't take things too seriously. I loved every page and can't wait for more in this series.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC. All opinions are my own.
I finally remembered to ask the kid what he thought. As always “it’s good.” He liked that when the robot fell down the bottomless pit he was still talking. He did t like Loz being upset that he forgot to pay for the flowers. If he could change one thing it would be to include more of the people on earth. He liked this one equal to the first. When he asked me the same questions I said I liked Loz, he’s my favorite character. And I liked that he and the queen are actually friends now. I did not like seeing Beatrice’s gnarly toenails. I also would add more of the people on earth. I loved the random things the captain (commander? What was he called?) said. Even though I did like this, I liked the first one more
Thank you NetGalley and HarperCollinsPublishers for my ARC!
The First Cat in Space series is an absolute blast—both first and second books do not disappoint. From crazy goofy characters, daring dastardly plots full of adventure, to fun illustrations—Barnett and Harris are the perfect team!
These books are perfect for reluctant readers, fans of Dog Man, or those who just love to laugh—The First Cat in Space will be a favorite for many, young and old.
In book 2, the Queen is poisoned, thus our hero, First Cat, must take the Queen on a journey to save her life! Along the way we meet new characters and run into old friends. Will our heroes find the cure in time?
My students have been asking when book two is coming, thanks to the preview at the end of book one. ☺️ So needless to say, when I saw this on NetGalley, I had to request an ARC! While it certainly won’t make my most memorable list, it has all the components that my 5th grade son and 6th grade students love: engaging illustrations, hilarious dialogue, and random humor that any preteen will laugh out loud at—including, of course, a toenail robot. Fans of Dogman, The Terrible Two, and similar hilarity will be satisfied with this one, and we will be adding it to our library shelves upon its release!
If you read the first cat in space book, then you know exactly what to expect from the second. How ever these books do work as a standalone. I find it funny that the books are about the first cat in space, but particularly this book the cat didn’t do much. There might have been 10 meows in the entire story. In the story, the queen has been poisoned, and she must go find a cure. And the toenail cutting computer is trying to find a new life. This book is full of sight gags, and fun for the age that is meant for it. Fans of Dogman, Wimpy Kid and other like graphic novels will thoroughly enjoy this.
Mac Barnett and Shawn Harris are back with a sequel to T𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘊𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘚𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘈𝘵𝘦 𝘗𝘪𝘻𝘻𝘢. 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘱 𝘰𝘧 𝘋𝘰𝘰𝘮 features the same characters from the first book and the plot is again filled with silly tales of adventure and doom and woe as the Moon Queen and her friends try to figure out who poisoned her soup. I love the illustrations, and while I probably didn’t LOL as much as in the first book, I still enjoyed my time reading it. My favorite character is the worm in the apple (glumpfoozle) wearing bard clothes and singing about LOZ 4000’s epic adventurous tales. 5 / 5 stars because of Harris’s illustrations. 2nd grade +
In the second installment of the First Cat in Space series, the Moon Queen finds herself in jeopardy after eating poisoned soup. In the absence of robot Loz-4000, she turns to First Cat to solve the mystery behind her poisoning and to help her find the antidote she needs to prevent her kingdom from falling into the hands of Bernice. Hi-jinks and humor ensue as the two journey to reach the antidote in time, encountering a diverse group of wacky and wonderful characters along the way. Great illustrations and lots of action and laughs will grab readers and keep them engaged from start to finish.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an eARC to read and review.
This is such an adorable, fun, funny, cute, and exciting graphic novel! It has some serious Dog Man vibes, but there are cats. Also, doesn’t everyone love cats? Quirky, weird, fun, silly, and their crazy adventures. I think all pre-schoolers and all middle-graders are going to love this one. The art is quite unique, I feel like it might be appealing to younger readers who might want to recreate the art in their own style. Bonus points for all text being in caps lock and in an easy-to-read font, making it easier for beginner readers to get through the book on their own.
Day 9 of 10 for Donalyn Miller #bookaday summer challenge Rowdy romp through space to the Land of Heat to find the wizard who knows the antidote to the poison ingested by the Queen of the Moon. Multiple plot lines, with an array of wacky characters of various talents, will make Book 2 of the FIRST CAT IN SPACE series a sure hit. #TheFirstCatinSpaceandtheSoupofDoom #NetGalley. Thank you to Katherine Tegen Books, and imprint of HarperCollins Children's Books , and Netgalley for the digital arc.
‘The First Cat in Space and the Soup of Doom’ by Mac Barnett with illustrations by Shawn Harris is the second volume in the crazy comic series for kids.
When the Moon Queen is poisoned by soup, it’s up to First Cat to help save her. Along the way, and lots of sidebar action like falling pianos, musicals, backstories by secondary characters and a betrayal plot. Will the Moon Queen be saved and can things get even crazier than last time?
This is a funny story, like the first volume. I wasn’t sure how a sequel would be, but it didn’t disappoint. Young readers should love this series.
Very funny story that takes place on the moon. Fruits are Glumpfloozle’s, a toenail robot is a hero and an old desktop computer is the enemy. While it was the second in the series, it can stand alone. Kids will eat this one up. Great for reluctant readers. The snark and humor comes through. I would almost say it’s adult humor, to a point. There’s a few spots when the worm breaks out in song and the authors have provided a link to listen to the songs. I could be convinced to have it on the list.
Just as funny, clever and artistically impressive as the first. This pair are just unstoppable. They are actually doing a local event this week, which I cannot attend and I’m heartbroken about it. Like, I keep trying to make it work, but it just doesn’t. Both my 7YO and I gobbled this up today, separately, and it goes on our shelf for a lifetime of rereads. Already looking forward to the third installment!
Just as adorable as "The First Cat in Space At Pizza". The queen is poisoned with her daily soup and must travel to find a cure before it is to late. All the favorites are back and join in the adventure. Highly recommended and looking forward to The First Cat in Space 3. Thanks to @netgalleybfor the opportunity to read this eArc in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion.
This is a super-fun sequel to The First Cat in Space Ate Pizza - more moon shenanigans, more chaotic fun! I loved the mystery in this one of who poisoned the Moon Queen, and the storytelling is absolutely top-notch. LOZ-4000 returns as the reluctant hero, but I will not spoil the identity of the villain! I loved this one as much - and maybe even more - than the first book!
While my 9 year old argued that there was not enough ‘Earth scenes’ in this book, we tore through it eager to see how the problem would be solved. After being huge fans of the first book as it was written, we were delighted to have another story with a similar feel and even some mystery to it! Great work Shawn and Mac!
I didn't laugh out loud as much as I did with the first one. I missed the general and Mr. Milksop, so I'm really glad they came back on the last page of the book. But it was still a fun story. I hope we're done with the other computer though because he was kind of annoying. Not Loz, but the other one. Mr. DANGER DANGER and You're Welcome.
This was adorable. I loved it and see my middle schoolers loving it too. The story is silly and fun but has enough action you won't get bored. The art fits the story perfectly. I loved it.
what a fun romp!!! the first cat in space had soup this time but hopefully it was pizza flavored. the paneling was so creative and meta commentary in this one got me. loz's facial expressions are so :]
