I'm at a Networking Event--Now What: A Guide to Getting the Most Out of Any Networking Event

Rate this book
Need help to expand your business perspectives? Find employment? Make contact with that one person that can open doors for you? Are you connecting with the right people? Are you or the people you work with somewhat challenged when it comes to networking at events?

'I'm at a Networking Event--Now What???' illustrates that today's social networking environments practically demand that you have at least some knowledge of effective networking practices in order to achieve the results most of us are looking for.
Through this book, you will learn how to make quality connections, cultivate relationships, expand your circle of influence through networking events, and create good "social capital." You'll also find information on networking tools and technology that will promote new contacts and connections.

For some, this book will serve solely as a reminder, but for many, it will offer new valuable insights on what to do, and just as importantly, what not to do while you're out there working hard to maintain good standing within your social networks (on-line or otherwise), and striving to grow and nurture your own valuable social capital. You'll also learn why you might want to consider becoming a "pay it forward" focused person, as well as how to be more memorable. By the end of the book, you should feel empowered to take matters into your own hands and approach networking with a plan to achieve your goals.

As a self-described "networking enthusiast," and someone that knows how to make meaningful connections and cultivate relationships, my friends all said it was only a matter of time before I started writing about this quasi hobby of mine. It also helps that I love hosting great parties and facilitating productive networking events. And then there's the fact that I've been a writer since the second grade when I won a feature in the school newspaper for a haiku I wrote about spring.

Why the focus on networking and LinkedIn? Because connections matter to business development and opportunity creation (my day job), and the whole point of networking is to connect with others by exchanging info, contacts and experience. I believe that beyond self-promotion, networking builds community and creates healthier and stronger business environments. I also believe that just like leadership and management skills, networking skills can be learned which is why I wrote, "I'm at a Networking Event--Now What???" This was my first published book, but definitely not my last. Here's one of my favorite book reviews:

The best tips are after the networking event in chapter 6. There are examples of how to write an email to make introductions to people who have a common interest, yet do not know each other. This has worked four times for me in the space of two weeks. The best part is that once you have made the introduction, then it is up to them to make it work. This is part of Sandy's "pay it forward" attitude throughout the book." - Jim S.

Today, when I'm not writing blog or Facebook posts about networking or hosting webinars about it, I help my clients grow their businesses by designing and delivering engaging social media marketing strategies and successful business development, content marketing and publicity programs. Since 2002, I've been a business consultant and trainer.

I currently live in the San Francisco Bay Area, by way of Seattle this time around (last time it was by way of my hometown of Chicago, IL). I lived in San Francisco 10 years ago after I'd set my sights on living here so I could spend my weekends hugging the nearby redwood trees and during the week work almost exclusively within the innovative and invigorating start up culture that permeates the region. I'm thrilled to be back in the Bay Area and love exploring everything this part of the country has to offer with my husband and creative partner, Keith Kaminski.

I came across this book by accident when I was browsing through the library. I picked it up and read it through in one sitting. It provided a welcome re-introduction to networking that I didn't realize I needed. As I was reading, I realized a few things: I was not taking networking seriously, I was not networking with the proper mindset, and I was not maintaining the connections I do have. Now I'm in a situation where I'm in the job market and I do not have the network I need to find my next job.

This book gave me easy to follow rules so that I can start building a network. As a very introverted person, I avoid any kind of networking event. I appreciated that the author acknowledges that introversion/shyness is a common reason why people don't network, but gives practical, easy-to-follow advice on how to get around these barriers. The book presents the idea that networking should be about paying it forward and looking at making contacts from the perspective of how I can help this new contact, rather than how can this contact help me. It is a novel approach to me and one that has completely changed how I view networking. Before I read this book, I honestly felt that networking was a very selfish and phoney endeavor of which I had little interest in participating. I love the pay it forward approach and the idea has changed how I view meeting new people and even making small talk. I also learned how to prepare for a networking event, something I didn't know how to do prior to reading this book. There are pointers to improve a LinkedIn profile. I also enjoyed reading about some of the etiquette required to properly fostering and maintain connections.

I also have to give marks to this book for presenting all of the information in a very concise and easy to read format. The author refrains from using a lot of business jargon that normally turns me off reading professional development books. She also draws on her own network to add real world examples to the content. I appreciated the links to blogs about networking.

To me, the only drawback of this book is that I think it's too short! I would have appreciated if the author had elaborated more on some topics. That said, I also think the reduced length gives the book wider appeal. If it was longer it might not appeal to novice networkers like me. The author also provides links to further reading throughout the book for those interested. I did follow the links and read further on my own and felt the suggested links were quality choices.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is new to networking or resists networking. I would also recommend this book to people who feel like they don't need to network. When I had a job I felt like I didn't need to network. Now I'm out looking for a new job and I don't have the network I need. I wish I'd found this book sooner.

Anyone who has heard Sandy Jones-Kaminski speak knows that she is an advocate for building relationships. This is at the heart of "I'm at a Networking Event. Now what?". The author inspires a return to connecting over common interests -- by finding them and being interested in the other person first. And the "Pay It Forward" parties are a great idea. This is an excellent gift for the high school or college graduate.
