E-Myth Mastery

Rate this book

The bestselling author of phenomenally successful and continually vital The E-Myth Revisited presents the next big step in entrepreneurial management and leadership with E-Myth Mastery.

A practical, real-world program that is implemented real-time into your business, Gerber begins by engaging the reader in understanding why the entrepreneur is so critical to the success of any enterprise, no matter how small or large it may be, and why the mindset of an entrepreneur is so integral to the operating reality of the organization, of the small business, and the enterprise. He then covers seven essential skills:

Leadership Marketing Money Management Lead Conversion Lead Generation Client Fulfilment

Each of these seven skills is presented through a specific training module with corresponding tests and exercises that explain the content and principles to be learned, provide case studies and examples, as well as worksheets for applying those ideas to the business. Gerber ties it all together by helping readers put the pieces together in an E-Myth Business, an E-Myth Practice and an E-Myth Enterprise.

This is the book that will show you the difference between being an entrepreneur versus doing a job, how to get money when the bank won't give it to you, how to expand your customer base when big business moves in down the street, how to develop the best people when you can't afford to pay them competitive wages, how to increase the predictability of what your business is able to promise, and then how to keep that promise, every single time, no matter where you are or whatyou're doing.

Mastery is a business development program that helps you turn your company into a world-class operation...into a turn-key money machine!

I didn’t get nearly as much out of this as The E-Myth Revisited. It has a lot more detail about business processes than The E-Myth Revisited. The conversations with Sarah take up too much space and don’t add any value to the business advice. For this reason, I barely read any of Part One.

There’s not much specifically about the Internet, but the principles still hold.

I like Gerber’s statement, “Your business, not your commodity, is your product.” He means that what you truly sell and deliver is the experience of buying from you, not your product/service. That’s why it’s so important to make sure your business runs smoothly.

Below are my notes.

Enterprise Leader
Categorize all your tasks as E (Enterprise), M (Manager), or T (Technician). E work is leadership work; what would be done in a corporate office. All other operational work is M or T work. Organize your day into three segments, and do each type of work only during its segment.

Marketing Leader
Language to use for gratification modes (how customers are gratified):
• For interpersonal (gratified by interacting with people): use language about people and social situations.
• For objective (gratified by objects or data): use language about info, systems, tangibles.
• For introverted (gratified by ideas in solitude): use language about how you'll handle details and make it easy, so they can be free from unwanted involvement and pursue ideas.

Language to use for dominant purchase preference (how customers decide what to buy):
• For experimental (want new, innovative; often interpersonal type): use language about newness, innovation, cutting-edge, first.
• For performance (want reliable, dependable, proven; often objective type): use language about reliability, dependability, quality.
• For value (want best price, value; often introverted type): use language about best price, value.

How to write USP
1. Make it short – a phrase, not a sentence.
2. Keep it a vague enough to leave room for the imagination.
3. Convey a positive feeling.
4. Give it impact, punch, and emotion.
5. Avoid defining product/service as a commodity.
6. Focus on the promise of emotional gratification, the result or benefit, not the technical work for features you offer.
7. Make it consistent with the relative standing, gratification mode, and purchase preference of your positioning strategy.

Positioning statement: more explicit restatement of USP. It has up to three elements:
• Product: identify the product/service and how it's different from competition
• Problem: describe problem, "package" your solution, promise emotional gratification
• Result: describe emotionally gratifying result your product/service delivers.

Lead Conversion Leader
• Customers want your product/service and a relationship with you, because they need your help to make the right purchase decision.
• Be indifferent to the sale, and focus on helping customer make decision. Tell them you want a long-term relationship dedicated to helping them.
• In lead conversion process, repeat the emotional message of your promise that you made in your marketing.

I read E-Myth Revisited and still think it's probably the best small business I've ever read. It absolutely changed the way I looked at business.

This book was as good as the first. It has a lot more practical exercises than the first book and comes along with companion worksheets.

This book gets a lot more granular than in the first book. It covers specific areas of business and how you should specifically behave to improve those areas. It takes a deep dive into what it takes to make your business run world-class.

If you followed everything in the book and did all of the homework you would 100% have a stellar company. It's a lot of work though. Almost an intimidating amount of work.
I have done the E-Myth online exercises (no longer available) and they were labor-intensive. Much like the worksheets that go along with the book. Doing the work is extremely valuable but you have to do the work. I actually never set the time aside to accomplish the work all the way through. I regret that I never did it all but it's hard.

Notes from the reading:

Become world class
In order to become world class you need clarity
You need clarity with yourself. What are you good at? What are you bad at? What do you put off?
You have to be brutally honest always.

To have a world class company you have to become a world clsss entrepreneur. To be a world clsss entrepreneur you have to have uncommon skill. To have uncommon skill you need uncommon practice. You have to commit to practice

Practice is grueling unsatisfying work with no immediate outcome but it is the only way to become world class. Your results won’t be remarkable. You won’t have remarkable results. Eventually you realize you a responsible for practice in order to produce great work. Understand the mechanics of entrepreneurship.

The need for help is endless. “Every time someone asked for help I realized I could never give enough”

In order for your business to change you yourself have to change.

Use creation as expression not as something to define you. Create without need, create out of passion

Purpose is what do I want and what do I get in return for my time and effort. “My purpose is to do and get this or that.”

Stop asking why is this important to and ask do I behave lilt this is important to me?

If there is one purpose it should be not to lie to yourself. Detect the lie and don’t believe them.

Diminish the gap between what you communicated and how they understand it

Money is food. We digest it into things.

This book was not what I expected at all. The first E-myth book was just about systems and processes. This one is about applying mindfulness and the internal journey around stopping doing the "working in" the business and stepping back - but then I think he gets into the systems and processes again after that (I'm only halfway through it).

It's a good approach, I'm looking forward to reading teh rest of it.

It still has the Sarah character and the All About Pies business, but this book is way more in-depth and not written as if for a second grader. Much better to read, although I still find myself skipping some of the passages till he gets to the point.

I'm glad that I read the The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It before this one. It was good that he reviewed some of the principles in that book, such as technician becoming entrepreneur.

I didn't realize there were so many e-myth books that he created.

How did he pass out on the floor at the beginning of the book?

Your small business should serve your life not consume your life.

Entrepreneurship is the power to create but it's created through you.

I recommend reading E-Myth first. But if you did and understood it but need the next step of planning your enterprise then I highly recommend E-Myth Mastery The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It

It won't make much sense at first but you'll start to observe small business owners struggling with the exact issues, same nearly the same things that Gerber outlines in this book.

Plus some of the chapter epigrams are by Christopher Locke, Eckhart Tolle giving the spiritual and counter - cultural foundations that most business books dealing with improving a small business lack. Then on the flip-side it has the super detailed techniques that again most small business books lack.

It goes into the different disciplines that an entrepreneur needs to master to bring forth the vision they have. I was especially inspired by the idea that nearly all entrepreneurs are reluctant entrepreneurs and leaders and how to turn that into an asset.

Technically, yes, I finished reading this book but I'm far from done with it. I've never come across a book that has such detailed explanations and guides for how to run a business and how to be an entrepreneur. While some of the content can be dry, almost clinical, in its approach to teaching about entrepreneurship, there are very valuable lessons contained in its pages. I quite disliked the framing story about Sarah, the owner of All About Pies, who you go along the journey with, but the rest of the content made up for the framing device, which felt forced and had awkward dialogue. Also, the 2004 book is a bit out of date when it comes to Internet marketing (it was published before social media even existed!) but the underlying lessons are timeless. I've already changed my approach to my business, and I hope I can stay on this path to improvement!

I have finally abandoned the book. I didn't get too far into it. I found it to be pretty turgid and overweight with California style meaningless psychology. In my opinion, the book could be trimmed by several hundred pages, and not lose much of its message. I can't remember why I took the book up in the first place. I thought it would help as a business guide, but I couldn't really get to grips with it. The pace of writing is very slow, which I find quite off-putting. I like a book to have a nice brisk pace where I am drawn onto the next page. Instead, with this book, I found myself thinking too much, 'Are we nearly there yet?'

I incredibly enjoy everything Michael Gerber writes however this was the least beneficial product he's put out. All his other books are must-reads. Here are my takeaways from this Read.

Business is meant to serve your life and not consume it.

DISC 2:

DISC 3:

Leaders are always risking themselves on how foolish they could look, this is why they are leaders.

DISC 4:

Your company is a sensory package meaning you must have a system and framework for everything from what the customer sees when they come in to how they're greeted to how their service and followed up with.

Step 2: become the marketing leader where you are able to learn from companies like Starbucks that are Masters in marketing.

Step 3: turn your ideas into visual representations.

DISC 5:

You want to break down the company in two different sections with different leaders and then distinguish the top five outcomes that each person is responsible for.

Venom review each day the previous day's performance. Then what needs to change.

You'll want to have a client fulfillment leader. This person's goal is to design-build Implement and improve the client experience.

DISC 6:

Describe the experience you want your customer to have the minute they walked in the door.

Then go through the process from start to finish.

What must you do for the customer to want to come back and become a client?

What do you want to learn about your clients how will you use that information to help serve them?

Never make the mistake of dehumanizing your customer.

While I would say the “E-Myth Revisited” was one of the most important books I ever read (or listened to, the audiobook was fantastic), this book came way short.

I listened to this one, the same narrator. The first section felt overly dramatic and esoteric. While I can appreciate the author is a creative writer and a poet, it was lost on me what he was trying to say. But then once the book got rolling, it almost felt like I was getting yelled at and thrown a massive to-do list. It went from 0 to 100 fast.

The assignments seem very helpful and to be honest, this book should’ve been two parts - one part the assignments with small explanations and the other part his personal story with his business. It would’ve been short, sweet, and clear. Instead the assignments are scattered among the much less helpful conversations with Sarah.

If you loved the first book as I did, don’t go look for this one. Find the exercises from this, but I would not recommend it. It’s far more confusing and stressful than helpful unfortunately.

Though the writing style of the book was a little too detailed for my taste which bored me a little and the first section of the book was as if i was reading an etrotica. But jokes aside, the book is titled "Mastery" - its supposed to be detailed.

After a long time, this has been one of those books which has pushed my comfort zone even farther and forced me to take not one or two but numerous pages of notes and numerous hours of discussion.

Regardless of your business industry the book will def help you forming systems and protocols for calm business management. The book is idiot-proof.

For anyone who has started or considering starting a business, this is a must read. It really takes you through the process of becomming and staying successful. You have to have all the roles filled, and if it's a one man show, you are the Cast, and you must learn to keep your business alive and running with systems to ensure it doesn't consume your life. When your work consumes your life, it won't thrive because you are only able to maintain your head above water, and not get yourself or your business ready for the next hurdle that most certainly will come your way.
