Huda #2

Huda F Cares?

Rate this book
In this laugh-out-loud funny sequel to the graphic novel Huda F Are You?, the Fahmys are off to Disney World, but self-conscious Huda worries her family will stand out too much.

Huda and her sisters can’t believe it when her parents announce that they’re actually taking a vacation this summer . . . to DISNEY WORLD! But it’s not quite as perfect as it seems. First Huda has to survive a 24-hour road trip from Michigan to Florida, with her sisters annoying her all the way. And then she can’t help but notice the people staring at her and her family when they pray in public. Back home in Dearborn she and her family blend right in because there are so many other Muslim families, but not so much in Florida and along the way.

It’s a vacation of forced (but unexpectly successful?) sisterly bonding, a complicated new friendship, a bit more independence, and some mixed feelings about her family’s public prayers. Huda is proud of her religion and who she is, but she still sure wishes she didn’t care so much what other people thought.

In a Nutshell: An excellent standalone graphic novel about sibling bonds/breaks on a road trip. The OwnVoices Muslim-American perspective adds a lot of personal depth. Absolutely recommended!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is the second book of the Huda graphic novel series, and though this continues into the next stage of Huda’s life, the book works perfectly as a standalone.
Huda, who has just completed her freshman year, is taken aback when her parents announce a road trip to Florida. Travelling with three of her four sisters isn’t going to be easy on a 24-hour long journey, but it is a worthwhile sacrifice in order to see Disneyworld. The journey and vacation cover Huda’s relationship with each of her sisters and her parents, her continued struggles over her Muslim identity, and the difficulty of fitting in as a visible Muslim in a non-Muslim society.
Everything about this graphic novel, right from the dedication to the acknowledgements is written straight from the heart. The background to the key characters is provided in Book One: ‘Huda F Are You?’, but we get to know the individual personalities of the Fahmy sisters in this second book.
The difficulties of a road trip, sibling conflicts and connections, parental partiality, religious identity, and social struggles are just some of the themes this book handles. I love how all the topics come out naturally through the plot and don’t feel forced in. While the themes are intense, Huda balances it with plenty of light moments. Her shoulder angel and devil also offer great comic relief.
This book continues the trend from Book One, depicting Huda’s self-identity issues through captions at the base of a statue pedestal. Again, it works perfectly to indicate Huda’s thoughts about herself after that particular event.
As one of the few (only?) contemporary OwnVoices Muslim graphic novels, this series offers a lot of insight into a practising Muslim’s life without going into information overload. Though the author makes it clear that the events are semi-fictionalised, there is a strong undertone of realism to the narrative. The racism, the culturally-offensive remarks, the offhand comments about the hijab and abaya – all seem to spring from real-life occurrences.
The illustrations are in the same style as always. Simple linework, cartoonish expressions, exaggerated reactions – excellent for the story.
All in all, a great continuation to the series. With a balance between light-heartedness and seriousness, this graphic novel highlights several practical conundrums at the personal, familial, religious, and societal level.
Much recommended to lovers of OwnVoices graphic novels. While the book can be read as a standalone, I’d strongly suggest reading the books in the right order as we get to know the family’s background only in Book One.
4.5 stars. *Huda F* thinks this high rating is an April Fool’s prank?
This was a library read. Moving on to Book Three: ‘Huda F Wants to Know?’
I read this in October and forgot to document.
Huda never misses. This is my third read from her and all of them are so good. Laugh out loud funny and relatable. Also I love that there was a we hunt the flame shout-out in here.
I loved Huda F Are You? and the sequel does not disappoint. In Huda F Cares, Huda navigates being visibly Muslim in public and trying to get along with her sisters on a family road trip to Disney World. It's funny and feels very grounded in what young teens in this situation might be feeling. And the sibling dynamics feel spot on- bickering but also love. Definitely a graphic novel worth your time, especially if you enjoyed the first one! I received a copy of this book for review via Netgalley, all opinions are my own.
˚ᝰ "Learn that the real world is not always going to be on level with our beliefs. And that shouldn't stop us from living our lives. It's about enjoying the good and leaving the bad. You don't have to compromise what you care about to have a good time." ˚ᝰ
Did I really just eat up two of her books in two hours?? Absolutely.
I loved the sisters bond in this because I have a sister and even though I might not be her best friend, she's mine and I love my sister so much 🥹 she's my role-model and everything I want to be<3 But she can be really annoying at times and I know I annoy her too 😜 She's been with me at my lowest and my worst, and I've been with her at her lowest and her worst.
AND THE ISLAMOPHOBIA REP👏 ON POINT. THE WAY I'VE HAD THE SAME EXPERIENCES?? Guys touching me and my hijab even though they know I'm not comfortable with it/they're not supposed to, people asking if I'm hot in my clothes, getting my hijab pulled off but then the person who did it is off the hook ☹
AND AND AND THE CONSTANT ANXIETY. Oh my gosh, almost every time I step out somewhere, I'm always self-conscious because I know I stand out because of my hijab and I'm worried people are judging me 24/7- I swear I can feel everyone's eyes on me. I remember on the first day of my new school in 7th, I refused to even look at anyone for a good 4 hours of the day because I was so anxious about the fact I was different from everyone else😭 I'm very extroverted, yes, but new spaces with new people always stresses me out on different levels🙏
The discomfort of having to pray in public was there with me at first, and still sometimes is, I would speed through my prayers and could feel my heart pounding as I prayed to the point where I wasn't even focusing on my prayer because I knew people were staring💀 But my sister (again, another reason why I love her) always prays in public, and she used to be uncomfortable with it too but got better with more and more practice, so since she forced me to pray w her, now I'm okay with it too and I actually love it because I'm praying outside in nature (it's so refreshing), and it shows I can still have a private conversation with God while being in public<3
Another amusing and enlightening graphic novel from Huda Fahmy about life as a Muslim American teenage girl. This one focuses on bonding with her sisters during a family vacation to Disney World. I really enjoy being exposed to this perspective that is so unfamiliar to me, and Fahmy keeps it light and breezy even when dealing with some heavy Islamophobic moments.
just like every other Huda Fahmy book, this made me laugh and tear up and i loved the story so much. as someone who isn't super close with her sister, it definitely made me want to check in on her. the representation is everything to me and there's nothing like it being set in your own home state! ❤️
This was a perfect book!! As someone with three siblings and Arab parents (as well as someone who regularly goes to Disney), I was laughing the whole way because it’s so accurate. I loved Huda’s (the character) growth this book as she navigated what it means to be Muslim in public spaces. Also died at the random Native Deen lyric (fun fact: I saw them open for Sami Yusuf my first and only concert experience)
I was lucky enough to help Huda with this book by going to Disney to take reference photos for her! And can I say the illustrations came out BEAUTIFUL and I can’t wait to see them in a hard copy
I received an e-arc of this title from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Very cute book. Really loving this series. Great set to help Muslim girls feel like there are others out there like them and to educate non-Muslims about Muslim culture, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and belonging.
I was so happy to discover there was another Huda Fahmy graphic novel. Always amusing, this time the family is headed to Disneyworld. Huda must deal with her annoying sisters in addition to her differences as a Muslim-American with the majority of the people around her. It’s funny, and yet eye-opening. Another enjoyable read!
Huda is one of five sisters in a family in Michigan. The sisters are surprised to learn that the family is taking a vacation to Disney World in Florida. Again and again, Huda struggles with trying to deal with her sisters' personalities and she runs up against prejudice and hatred from others and she is forced to find ways to cope with these problems.
An excellent book.
Another funny but heartfelt graphic memoir about the love-hate relationship between sisters and the challenges of living openly as a hijab wearing Muslim in America. This sequel sees Huda traveling to Disneyland with her family on their summer vacation. Huda learns important lessons about sticking up for her sisters and being proud of who she is. Highly recommended!
i LOVE Huda Fahmy's work, she's extremely relatable and super funny! If anyone asks me what its like growing up muslim in America i would point them in the direction of Huda's graphic Novels because it literally feels like she's writing about me. She does a great job of pin pointing universal experiences most brown muslim girls have lived through in America but in a humorous way. This one was great, 5/5 ⭐️
HUDA F IS BAAAAAACK!
"Huda F Cares" is the latest chronicles of @yesimhotinthis - this time, following Huda and her family to Disney World.
Between Huda's fears that her family stands out a little too much, Umm Huda's nefarious plot to force some sisterly bonding, and the awkwardness of praying in public, this graphic novel lives up to its laugh-out-loud predecessors.
Once again, Huda Fahmy demonstrates what it's like to creatively, hilariously, and authentically represent the spiritual struggles, emotional challenges, and daily frustrations of (Western) Muslim life... while uplifting Islam and leaving readers with a sense of love and appreciation for the Deen and being a strong Muslim.
"Huda F Cares?" releases on October 10, so pre-order IMMEDIATELY!!! You don't want to wait for this fabulously funny book!
Great graphic about Huda and her sisters. A family holiday to visit amusement parks leads which her parents hope will help with sisterly bonding initially doesn’t go well. It’s hard to hold onto the things that you believe in when in a world which finds your cultural values weird. Huda has a hard time with her conflicting feelings. This is a fantastic insight into Islamic family life and how the modern world confronts and conflicts with the inherent cultural ways of being.
It’s funny and joyful and inherently good natured. Lived it. Heaps to unpack in here. Must get hold of the first one.
Mini Book Review: Sooo full disclosure I totally thought this was the first book and I did not do my research correctly because this is the 2nd book in the series. But have no fear, the first book is waiting for me at the library.
Now that I got that out of the way, Huda is a teenager just trying to make it through summer. Her parents thought that Huda and her sisters needed to bond so they take a family drive from Michigan to Florida to go to Disney World.
The book explores themes of parent relationships, sister relationships, Islamophobia, and just wanting to belong. I am not familiar with the Muslim cultures so I learned through the book how they pray and the rituals they do prior to praying. Also I love how this book reminds us how the love of reading and books brings people together!
Also the graphics in this are really well done! I love how at the end Huda provided the phases of the draft from the script, to the storyboard and so forth.
Once again a book makes me wish I had sisters! Even though they fought and were annoyed with one another.
I am excited to go back to read the first book and I was lucky enough to have an advance copy of the 3rd book in the series.
PS - Also I love the GENIUS way the author (or her marketing team) did the titles of these books! They crack me up!
This is the second book in Huda series and as usual this too is really good. This book explores the bond of sisterhood, family and the issues that come with being a practicing Muslim when in public. In this book, Huda and her family takes a road trip to Disneyland in Florida. 24 hour drive in the backseat of a car with all bickering sisters has come out really well in the book. The questions that come out seeing somebody dressed totally different than norm or being a practicing Muslim in public is brought out very well in the book. As usual art work is wonderful.
My rating 4.5 rounded to 5*
I could read Huda’s graphic novels everyday forever. I love how she weaves a story with nostalgia and humor. I love seeing her childhood memories in this format and believe anyone who went on family vacations (especially those with sisters) will connect with this story. This is book 2 in her graphic memoir series and I hope we get many more!
My least favorite of all Huda Fahmy's work.
It lacks humor, has minimal plot development, and comes across as rather bland, to be honest.
Was a little confused as I thought Kylie had stood up for Huda each and every time, but maybe Huda felt that it wasn’t enough, which is valid. I still thought that part was super well done.
I loved it! In this graphic novel, Huda, a Muslim girl practices her religion while on vacation with three of her four sisters and parents at Disney World. Huda is the second oldest; there's also Dena the oldest, Lola the cool one, Neda the youngest and Amani who stays back for the Quran intensive. Not only a story about a family practicing their faith publicly, this is a sisters story.
Huda doesn't always see eye to eye with her sisters and is not fully looking forward to spending time with them. Will this vacation help her grow closer to her sisters or create even more friction between her and them? Fans of Raina Telgemeier's graphic novels espcecially Drama will enjoy this.
This is the second installment in the teen graphic novel series inspired by the author's experiences as a young Muslim woman in America - in this case the happiest place on Earth: Disney World.
Road trips and family vacations can test the most tender of hearts. I appreciated the themes explored in this one: Islamophobia, family dynamics, challenges of being a visible Muslim in a non-Muslim country. The illustrations continue to be simple line art and yet somehow capture the mood well
This can be read as a standalone but you'll understand the characters better if you start with book 1.
I love Huda and her sisters 😭 I related to them so much!! when they had to make wudu in the public bathroom omg and you’re scared someone’s gonna walk in and think you’re taking a bath😭 and they’re all so funny omg!! A good sense of humor definitely runs in the family😹 Dena is so sweet for getting Huda a keychain with her name on it!!🥰👯‍♀️ DENA IS MY FAV SIBLING 😼 I LOVE HER SO MUCH FOR STANDING UP FOR HUDA AND DEFENDING THEM AGAINST RHAT JERK THAT CANT KEEP HIS HANDS TO HIMSELF🙄 I hope he learned his lesson. AND I LOVED THE SISTERS UNITING TO BREAK DENA AND HUDA OUT OF JAIL!!
They were so real for being scared of praying in public. If I’m in public it doesn’t matter I HAVE TO PRAY but I have to admit I do be nervous sometimes 😭 like pls I already be getting looks
Huda loves being Muslim, but she can’t help but feel different from everyone else. I definitely feel like this sometimes especially when I was younger. I definetly understand and relate to feeling different especially when you’re at events or amusement parks etc. and you see people doing haram things or wearing clothing that’s like the opposite of you 😭 and sometimes as Muslims we feel restricted or left out because of the things we can’t do but we just have to remember everything haram is a protection and we just have to stay strong😭
I love Huda and her sisters and I loved that the parents took them to Disney so that they could bond and learn to have fun without doing bad things or compromising their beliefs🥰😭😭
Most accurate Muslim representation I've ever read. Absolutely hilarious.
The sibling relationships are so relatable. I have 3 siblings and let me tell you, the fart in the car? Canon event.
You NEED to read at least one of Huda's graphic novels in your lifetime.
I loved when in the end the mom said that she protects them and chooses certain environments for them but they won't live in a bubble forever and the amount of times my parents told us this. Never thought I'd see it in a book.
Also not the We Hunt the Flame fangirlinggg we love to see it
