Hardcover; Fine; Dust Jacket - Like New; Originally published in Ireland in 1934. The novel explores the deep-seated conflicts of the Hussey clan, an Irish middle-class family sturggling with the changing face of their beloved hoomeland." In unread condition 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall
This family saga about love and betrayal bogs down occasionally but the way O'Faolain describes the characters, the richness of the language (some of which I did not understand), the extraordinary ability he has to describe the elements, the scenery, the towns of Limerick and Cork, the tragic twist at the end -- a book well worth sticking to all the way to the end.
I didn't complete the novel, it was a set text on an Irish Fiction module for University. A Nest of Simple Folk, attempts a broad generational novel, while chronicling a broad area, it fails to make characters distinctive and realistic. I think the reason I didn't enjoy this novel because does not match up well the rural and the classic generational mode.
