Identical twin sisters Goldie and Godiva take a wild and funny romp through the glitzy world of TV chefs - in search of a killer. When Godiva Olivia DuBois, a.k.a. G.O.D. – an advice columnist from Beverly Hills – takes her niece Chili to a taping of the TV cooking show Flirting with Food she’s selected from the audience as a food taster – and winds up in the hospital with food poisoning. Chili’s mother, Goldie Silver, an ‘aging hippie’ living in Alaska, already sensed trouble through a psychic bond with her twin and immediately hopped on a plane to California. Together these two wisecracking amateur sleuths try to solve the ‘who’s sabotaging the cooking show’ mystery – with the help of their 80 year old mother Flossie and their Uncle Sterling – both former Vaudeville magicians. Godiva develops a personal interest in handsome Chef Caesar Romano, the star of the show, who just happens to need a new assistant. Chili – already an experienced sous chef – is offered the position but her chance at stardom may be short-lived, because someone wants to eliminate Caesar, the reigning Gourmet Gladiator champion, from the upcoming competition. When this year’s glitzy tournament begins, rivalry quickly turns to murder. Romano is arrested for the crime, and the sisters set out to prove he’s innocent. Can they stir up the cooking pot to flush out the real killer without getting into too much hot water?
Absolutely a hilarious read. Murder, madness and mayhem abounds in this novel, not only the characters for the most part have funny names but the authors game them such wonderful personalities, The story was very well written and easy to follow. I know not everyone has the same sort of sense of humor but if you've ever been a fan of Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance (I Love Lucy), Bette Midler in her comedic roles or Estelle Getty (Sofia from The Golden Girls) you should surely enjoy this work.
This was an interesting book. It was slow to get started because I couldn't keep up with all the characters but once I got into the book it was pretty good. You can't help but love the Silver Sisters (Goldie and Godiva) but their mother and uncle are a hoot. The sisters go to a cooking show where Godiva gets sick after eating some of the cooked meal. Then one of the chef's is killed and Godiva's new boyfriend is the main suspect so they set out to find the killer. The book is full of great angles, a lot of suspects and some crazy antics. Very enjoyable and a great mystery. May have to try reading the next book in the series.
I enjoyed meeting the two main characters, Goldie and Godiva, twin sisters who ended up investigating murder together. Their mom Flossie and uncle Sterling were hilarious when they helped investigate--and they were very sneaky about letting the ladies know that they were doing this, but a piece of evidence that they found turned out to be something key to the case.
The showdown was exciting, and I had never guessed who the killer was. It'll be interesting to see what these two ladies get into next.
This is a fun first in series about a group of eclectic seniors who have more wit than hair. The mystery is a good start, but the humor had me rolling in the aisles it is so over the top funny. The publisher's blurb is pretty good, so no need to recap. Enjoy! Stephanie Brush really gives it the Brooklyn seal of approval while being incredibly versatile in differentiating characters. I got my copy on sale from Chirp.
Loved this book and characters. What fun it was reading about the silver sister's adventures. Their mother and uncle could get into some interesting situations too! Good plot with surprising twists.
Full of surprises and quirky people, you’ll get a laugh out of this fast paced story. Stars of the cast are twin sisters with silver hair and silver tongues. Full of fun and lovely descriptions of food!
The story centered around two TV cooking shows and a cooking contest (like Iron Chef America), with plenty of fun, crazy/zany characters that kept me entertained.
I loved the twin sisters and the interplay between them, and their adorable aunt and uncle (who made me laugh many times -- definitely my favorite characters).
Many wonderful characters in this book.
I didn't, however, find Godiva's love interest very believable. He seemed to be a nice guy, just a bit boring for her, imo. I'll be interested to see if he remains her beau in the next book.
A Corpse in the Soup - Reviewed by Martha A. Cheves, Author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat
Some one is sabotaging the cooking show of America's favorite Chef. Food testers are coming down with food poisoning, the Baked Alaska is blowing up and the paprika is as hot as Hades. But who would do this and why?
When I was young I enjoyed playing the board game "Clue." What made this game so much fun were the characters. So now I want to introduce you to the characters of A Corpse in the Soup. Let's see if you can determine "who done it" in this story of colorful characters.
Godiva Olivia Duboise - writes a syndicated column titled Ask G.O.D. Resides in L. A. And loves to solve other people's problems. Married, widowed, left very rich.
Goldie Silver - identical twin of Godiva. Owns and operates the Silver Spoon Antiques in Juneau, Alaska. Even though she is identical in looks to Godiva she is actually a "mirror" twin. While Godiva's clothes come straight from the designers, Goldie's come straight from the Salvation Army. Godiva has a fleet of expensive cars in her garage while Goldie drives an old clunker.
Chili Pepper - Daughter of Goldie and Red Pepper (Goldie kept her maiden name for the shop). Sous-Chef on her father's Alaskan cruise ship the Aurora Borealis. Gets a call from Godiva inviting her to attend the taping of "Flirting with Food" where Godiva is chosen to be a food tester and ends up in the hospital with food poisoning.
Flossie Silver - Mother of Godiva and Goldie. Sterling Silver - Uncle of Godiva and Goldie. Both Flossie and Sterling are retired vaudeville magicians. And they, like Godiva love to solve other people's problems.
Chef Caesar Romano - Star of "Flirting with Food." Cooked and served the shrimp that put Godiva in the hospital with food poisoning. Swears someone is sabotaging his food. Ends up becoming Godiva's biggest fan and admirer.
Chef Biff Wellington - star of his own cooking show and known as the "Aerobic Chef". Will be competing against Caesar Romano in the annual competition of "Gourmet Gladiators". Hates his competition and swears that he will be this year's winner.
Candy Vanderloop - ex-assistant to Chef Caesar Romano, now working with Chef Biff Wellington. Has a big crush on Romano. Finds out that Wellington is a real pain to work with and for.
Chris Cross - office assistant to Chef Biff Wellington. Has his own problems working with and for Wellington. Teams up with Candy to create their own show.
Now, with names like these you know this is going to be a very funny, entertaining book. But this is also a murder mystery so one of these characters must die. In fact the victim is murdered and found face down in a bowl of soup.
Goldie sums it up quite well with her words... "All I wanted was a quiet buying trip. Instead, my sister gets poisoned, then dates the guy who poisoned her, who hires my daughter, then he gets arrested for killing his rival, we try to help out and almost get carved up by a wacko writer and our savior is a sweet little girl who turns out to be a kamikaze Black Belt. This could only happen in L.A."
This was a murder mystery with the usual suspects with motif, and I did narrow it down to two suspects by midway. But that was okay and didn't lessen the enjoyment one little bit, because there was a wonderful cast of characters with quirky names, and somehow seemed early on to be vaguely familiar.
So we had Godiva and Goldie the Silver Sisters and two senior amateur sleuths; Chilli, Grandma Belle and her brother who were retired magicians; Chilli, Goldie's daughter and assistant chef; chefs Caesar Romano; his rival chef Biff Wellington; Candy Vanderloop, his assistant; Moishe Matsumoto Japanese top chef; Manicotti in charge at Kitchen Coliseum where they were preparing to hold the Gourmet Gladiator challenge. And I wouldn't have minded how many more characters were introduced, because it was entertaining just to see what they would be named.
I'm sure from this you'll see why those names were familiar as did I when I realised this was a spoof on the Food Channel/Masterchef/Iron Chef America. It was a well done spoof too, with plenty of clues, twists, turns, and a lot of rollicking one-liners to keep you laughing out loud. Good plot and wonderful entertainment for a cozy mystery read.
It has always puzzled me why good satirical crime novels don't sell as well as mystery thrillers and romance books. What's wrong with a damn good laugh? This novel is a rollicking, funny, bizarre, witty and thoroughly entertaining story about the world of TV chefs in particular. Those that lord it over the kitchens of our finer hotels, restaurants and cafes are on par with these precious, moody, jealous prima donnas.. I know, as my son was a very talented chef who had the good sense to quit the scene, No corpses in the soup, but psycho chefs were two a penny. Bandage bracelets on the wrists of the very talented yet shy sous chef from slitting his wrists with great regularity was his introduction to the industry. Marijuana cookies to ‘bring them down’ when the bedlam of service was over. Being sent to ‘coventry’ when he wouldn’t partake. Rotten asparagus from the buffet appearing as next day’s soup in the elite restaurant of our finest hotel. I thought he had landed on another planet. So being up to speed with what goes on behind the scenes, I did not find many of the situations as bizarre as other readers may. The writing talent that produced this book lifts it above the mundane as they juxtapose chefs with seemingly odd skillsets; and others that are simply barking mad. Their unlikely sleuth heroines are a delight of eccentric behavior. Hired to find out who is sabotaging Chef Romano’s show, they end up solving the murder of his nasty competitor before the axe falls on his neck and show. It has enough crises, twists and turns and inept detectives to keep the reader involved and laughing, as the sleuths ’idiosyncratic family and friends pitch in to solve the crime. This should do very well as a series if the sequels are as good as this book.
Goldie Silver and Godiva Olivia DuBois may be identical twins with the ability to communicate with one another telepathically, but that’s where their similarity ends. Fashion-conscious Godiva, living in Beverly Hills, writes an advice column called Ask G.O.D. Free spirit Goldie lives in Juneau, Alaska, where she owns an antique store. Godiva takes Goldie’s daughter Chili, a sous chef, to the taping of popular Chef Caesar Romano’s show. Romano asks Godiva to sample the food and she passes out from food poisoning. Goldie flies in to help, and at the hospital, Romano confides that someone is sabotaging his show. Romano offers Chili a job as his assistant, and Goldie and Godiva put their heads together to try to figure out who’s got it in for Romano. When his nemesis Biff Wellington is found with a knife in his back, Romano’s the number one suspect and Godiva, romantically interested in Romano, is out to prove him innocent, along with the help of her sister Goldie and their mother and uncle, two former Vaudeville magicians.
This fun mystery romp will keep the reader guessing while enjoying the antics of Goldie and Godiva, along with their quirky family. The characters are amusing and endearing, and even the dog Waldo has his humorous moments. The plot moves along crisply, offering plenty of red herrings, and is twisty enough to provide a good whodunit. A Corpse in the Soup, first of the Silver Sisters Mystery series written by sisters St. James and Bradner, is a refreshing addition to the mystery world.
In A Corpse in the Soup by Morgan St. James and Phyllice Bradner, Godiva, author of the "Ask G.O.D." syndicated advice column, lures her chef niece, Chili, to her home in Beverly Hills from Alaska, where Chili lives with her mother, Godiva's identical twin, Goldie, with the promise of tickets to some major cooking shows. But at the first, that of the award-winning Chef Romano. But when Chef Romano asks Godiva, as a celebrity, to taste the dish he has just made, she ends up in the hospital with poisoning from bad mushrooms, clearly another piece of sabotage that has been happening to Chef Romano.

This book was a hoot to read. The blurb on the back cover condenses the story best, "Identical twin sisters Goldie and Godiva take a wild and funny romp through the glitzy world of TV chefs - in search of a killer!"
This debut novel is the introduction to a series involving Goldie Silver, an antique dealer in Juneau, Alaska and her sister, Godiva, an advice columnist that goes by G.O.D. (Godiva Olivia DuBois.) Godiva is flooded with mail and needs help...now. Enlisted to help is the twin's 80yr old Mother, Flossie, and their Uncle Sterling also in his 80's. Godiva decides that if her niece, Chili Pepper could be lured to Southern California, she could help answer the mail also. The bribe? Tickets to the famous cooking show 'Flirting With Food.'
Chili is thrilled and flies down. At the show, Godiva is asked to sample the food and comes down with food poisoning. Goldie flies down to help her twin and they all end up aiding the Chef as he is accused of murdering his rival, the Aerobic Chef!
This book is funny. An easy read and kept my attention. We, the readers, are gently led to the culprit.
What I learned from this book is that I can write books people like. My sister and I write the wacky Silver Sisters series. The protagonists are silver-haired Mae West lookalikes with a nose for trouble. Goldie Silver, an over-the-hill hippie who lives in Juneau, Alaska and her twin, Godiva Olivia DuBois, wealthy Beverly Hills widow and advice columnist author of the lovelorn column "Ask G.O.D." When Godiva is poisoned on Chef Caesar Romano's show "Flirting With Food" he flirts with more than food and winds up dating Godiva.
Then, during a major televised cooking contest, The Greatest Gourmet Gladiator Tournament, a chef winds up face down in a bowl of soup, and Caesar is the prime suspect.
The Silver Sisters Mystery series first offering. Well read by Stephanie Brush. I enjoy most anything she reads. This tale is centered around the Silver Sisters.. One lives in Alaska and her twin lives in Beverly Hills. Although identical twins their life styles and personalities are very different. Their elderly, Jewish mother and Uncle live with the sister in Beverly Hills and add fun "color" to the tale. This isn't a "high tension" murder mystery but it was a fun listen.
I got this book to read as an award winner for a challenge i am working on, but alas, the award was in a different category than I needed it to be. Still, I really enjoyed it and can see why it was an award winner... The characters are funny and full of crazy antics and ideas, although the names are a bit too alliterate for my tastes. The plot is well developed and the action, while zany does keep one's interest. I'd definitely read another book or two by these authors...
This is one zany cozy mystery. Quirky characters with even quirkier names, a murder at a chef's cook-off television show and lots of crazy antics by the twin sister amateur sleuth team, Goldie and Godiva, along with all their equally slightly-off-the wall relatives, makes this a light and funny cozy mystery. I have to admit, it was really different and I enjoyed the slight twist at the very end.
Such a fun read. Actually, a fun listen, since I listened to the audiobook.
I especially enjoyed that the story took place in the same neighborhood where I grew up (and the heroines went to my high school) and that the family was Jewish, with the typical lingo, speech patterns, and use of Yiddish terms.
Very Good and Funny. I esp. liked the language and accents used by the reader on audiobook. I love twins and stories about twins so this was an extra fun book to hear. Great mystery as well and the older members of the Silver family are hilarious!
Morgan St. James has written an amusing cozy mystery to say the least. The antics of all those involved had me laughing throughout this mystery. Looking forward to following this author.
