Sara Holbrook has either been eavesdropping in homes with tweens and teens rife with drama, has her own tweens and/or teens, or can recollect with vivid detail those years when a person wasn't fully formed yet and all the trials and tribulations that come with that explosion in growth.

Readers will immediately see themselves when they open I Never Said I Wasn't Difficult.

Safe Inside (hal.48)

The storm
Blew into town
Kicking hail up with it's feet
Turning dust and dirt to mud
And puddles to iced tea

The windows rattled in their socket
but I didn't cry or hide
you can watch a storm
and learn
When you are feeling safe
inside

This book is a collection of poems that are used to express their own personal trials throughout their lives. Have students write their own poems to vent their frustrations. Explain that writing out emotions is a good way to relieve stress.

Sara Holbrook does a great job of writing poems from the point of view of the difficult child who really means to do well.

This book were poems about a boy feeling hurt and sad inside. I could honestly feel the pain in his words, but otherwise, it didn't speak out so much to me...
