Born on May 6th in St. Paul, Minnesota, Judy Delton lived in her hometown for most of her life. She wrote more than one hundred books for children, including the popular Pee Wee Scouts series, which sold more than seven million copies. Her writing was often compared to Beverly Cleary or Carolyn Haywood for her ability to capture the essence of childhood.
For many years, Ms. Delton taught writing classes in her home. Today, those writers are having their own books published and remember her forthright instruction and critique with appreciation. Many writers have benefited from her handbook, The 29 Most Common Writing Mistakes and How to Avoid Them.
Ms. Delton had four children and decided to quit teaching so she could stay home and raise them. Writing prolifically was her way of supporting her family. She died very suddenly of a blood infection in December of 2001. Her legions of friends and all those she taught were greatly saddened.
There may be a few people scratching their head on why i gave this old and dated book a 5 star rating, but I did it for the way it makes me feel. I am a military brat. We would spend years not seeing family. This book reminds me of when you would show up at grams’ (grandmother to you) and she DIDN’T have all you favorite foods waiting. It was heartbreaking, until you discover that you can make it yourself. That is basically the story of this book, but with a bear and a rabbit. And let me tell you I was 28 before I realized why no one else's rice krispies treats tasted like grams. It's not always the ingredients, but sometimes the way it's made that makes all the difference.
Rabbit Finds a Way is a tale of a slightly selfish rabbit who learns that the best opportunity is the one in front of you and you shouldn't have expectations of others when they have made no promises. Rabbit isn't a VERY selfish rabbit, because he is willing to stop and help a friend and he is really one smart bunny because he solves his own problem! The story is presented in a fable style and the illustrations draw the reader into the story. Rabbit's face has such expressions! I like the drawing style with the crosshatching and close parallel lines for shadows. The details are clever. The drawings are presented on brown background with gray tones, and highlights in green and orange, perfect for a tale about carrot cake!
A book my 6 yr old as well as my twin 3 yr olds loved. A solid reading level 1 book, this cute story keeps all ages engaged with the bright colorful pictures and cute story. A great addition to any children's library.
This was always one of my favorites as a kid, and as an adult I can appreciate the message it shares of self-reliance. I recently found a pretty decent copy to gift to a pre-reader (especially because his dad LOVES carrot cake, and it was a hit.
