This may not be a recent publication (indeed it was printed in 1991) but the underlying principles that you see in today's pedagogical books reflect what David Cross describes here. It contains many useful tips and activities, ways of making your own tasks and ideas on promoting the four skills. It's easy to read and presents in layman's terms whilst making discrete reference to ELT standard theory. Cross seems to predict the onset of TBLT, Thornbury's "unplugged" approach and strongly advocates authentic texts and comprehensible input. The technology referred to in the book may indeed be out of date, but doesn't detract as you can easily substitute "cassette" for "mp3" or "overhead projector" for "PowerPoint"!
