Locke and Key

Rate this book
Three tales of hunters, vampires, and the colorful lives they lead...

Locke and his partner Key hunt broken vampires—those who did not take well to the changes inflicted upon them, and feast wildly upon the living. They live the life of wanderers, traveling from place to place, putting an end to broken vampires. They rely on each other, partners through and through—until a secret rips them apart.

Preston is a hunter of top vampires, those who have lived for decades, even centuries. It is Preston's duty to keep an eye on these older vampires and ensure they do not break the strict rules by which they live. This duty is easier said than done, when his days are predominantly spent settling the disputes between two vampires with a vehement dislike of each other—but who share a particular fondness Preston.

Trevor has faithfully served top vampire Richard as housekeeper for years, watching from afar as the man he loves notices everyone but the man right in front of him. But then Richard, recovering from a stinging rejection, begins to spend more time with his housekeeper in an effort to get over his heartbreak, and Trevor begins to hope that he might finally get the chance at the vampire he's always wanted.

Locke & Key: 3.25 stars
Locke and Key are partners who hunt broken vampires. But when Locke finds out that Key has been hiding a secret from him, he re-evaluates their relationship and pushes Key away. Truthfully, I want more groveling. Locke is being an ass; to think that Key has never, EVER, betray him the way Locke's previous ex did. Yeah, not enough groveling on my part.

Sharing: 2 stars
Preston has his hands full trying to be a referee between his two top vampires: Alessandro and Preston. I. Don't. Like. Threesome. Yep, more than two people in a relationship is never good for me. Enough reason for my rating, is it?

The Housekeeper: 3.75 stars
Trevor is Richard faithful housekeeper for years, though he years for something more. Unfortunately, Richard doesn't even notice him. Now, this one is pretty sweet. We have pining housekeeper and oblivious Master Vampire. I would give it 4-stars if not for a couple of problems. Richard doesn't really "act" on his feeling until Trevor is basically gone for several days. I wish Richard is the one rescuing Trevor, as a gallant gesture, of showing Trevor how much he means for him. So a bit a let down on that fort. But I guess this is my favorite of the three stories.

So, uhm, how about Billy??! No story of him??

Locke and Key - Vampire Hunters of 'broken' (turned and almost zombie like) vampires. Partners in every way but one until a secret drives them apart and realises what he wanted all along. Locke in grumpy in just the way I like my characters and Key is the perfect foil.
Sharing- Preston is Locke's brother. He is a Hunter of Top vampires, which makes him more of a diplomat than a fighter. Two of the vamps are constantly fighting, until they realise that what they need to do is share. And who they need to share is Preston.
The Housekeeper - Richard, a top vampire, lost Preston to the pair of vampires in the previous story. Trevor, his housekeeper, has been in love with him forever, but Richard barely notices him. A tale of unrequited love and realisation that had me wiping a tear from my eye.

The collection is low/no sex. I really enjoyed all the stories, although Sharing felt like the start of a much longer story. I found myself wanting to know how Preston's family would react.

Locke & Key definitely has all the elements I've come to absolutely love and respect from Ms Derr's works. Sadly, because I've only read some short stories from her recently, I haven't really gotten a chance to appreciate it.

I love that this book, though it has three separate stories, is based in the same world with the same characters. I think partly the reason why I love this is because you kind of get a glimpse of what the characters are like before entering their head and story, so it makes the characters all the more endearing to you.

Like all her stories, the stories are so damn lovable (some infuriatingly so), their romances are funny, sweet and a treasure to read, and they leave you with this awesome afterglow which I've come to compare with the afterglow after sex. Or, after reading a good sex scene, that is, haha.

A collection of vampire stories which reminded me how much I would like to read more Megan Derr's longer stories, not to mention more explicit ones: the three guys from Sharing could burn the sheets, pages and oh, so much more if they were just given that chance. ~_^

Sweet, sexy, uncomplicated, fun collection of vampire goodness. I wouldn't mind reading more about all these characters.

Well damn, accidental re-read. Hard to tell with this author, whether something is new or a re-release. Still feel the same.

July 2018

Didn’t like the first story much. Key was secretive and Locke was already awaiting a betrayal. They were the more childish of the pairings. I liked the Preston story, Richard was a bit of a creep. My favourite story was the third one. The last line made me laugh. Could’ve done with a story for Billie.

About the world-building: Vampires are part of society and are more or less strictly governed. The Hunters are the one policing them and killing those who break the laws.

Locke & Key - 0h 38min - I didn't really like the first story. It just didn't get to me. It wasn't bad, just kinda meh.
Sharing - 0h 31min - this story was amusing, I liked it.
The Housekeeper - 0h 33min - I do like me some grumpy and sulking vampire, even better when sleepy!

It's a solid 3.5 stars, I'm having a difficult time to decide between 3 and 4 stars. The first story might have not been more than three stars, but I did really like the other two.

I love Megan Derr stories but for some reason I held off on this one. While I don't mind a vampire story there are not my first choice. But if Megan Derr were to write more I would so be adding them.

These were 3 short stories that all tied loosely together and were sweet fun and exactly what I love. Misunderstandings, secrets and unfulfilled love. Perfect for me.

My favorite was surprisingly Richards story, but mostly because I loved Trevor.

I do adore Megan Derr and I love when she writes these interconnected stories. I find myself loving the secondary characters once they move into the spotlight more than the original pair.

Plus, this book really got on my good side because lately all of the m/m romance I've been buying end up being written in the first person. This one, thank god, is not.

This is a very quick read consisting of three short stories, all of vampires and hunters. This is a good book for those who like to read about the suggestion of sex, but not the actual sex scenes, although there is kissing, angst and emotion. It was great for a nice short read.

Funnily enough, Locke and Key were my least favorite pairing in this collection...luckily the other two definitely picked up the slack. As usual, though, Megan Derr always provides a sweet and cute read. :)

I think I've already stated somewhere that Megan's contemporary pieces don't work well for me. This one was passable but not really great.
First story left me angry, because Locke proved to be such an asshole it's beyond words. Maybe he did make apologies, but only after Preston forced him to go after Key again. He doesn't deserve the lovely Key in the least. Have I said lovely? I should have said precious, darling, brave Key. Him, I liked instantly.
Second story was more enjoyable and I do like a good threesome, especially since the characters were rather charming. But it just begs for a steaming hot sex scene, seriously. Instead we are left with the info that they "fell to proving just how well they had learned to share." I'm a bit disappointed.
As for the third story... well, Trevor states at the beginning that he's "an unattractive, boring human" and I must say I agree with him entirely. He's just so plain that it's a wonder Richard ever stopped treating him like a piece of furniture. Also, the name 'Trevor' reminds me of Neville Longbottom's pet toad. So basically the main character spoiled this story for me.
Overall, 3 stars for the whole book.

Three short stories - Vampires and Hunters

This is the second book I've read by this author and I enjoyed it almost as much as the first - Wriggle and Sparkle. This book features three short stories that deal with Vampires and Hunters. In this world, vampires have a hiarchy of sorts and hunters are ones that basically keep the status quo. The first story revolves around a hunter and this partner, who is a little more than he's let on. The second story centers on the brother of the first hunter, who is a kind of babysitter for the top ranking vampires, and who finds himself the object of not one, but three vamps that want to possess him. The third story is about one of the vamps from the second story and his housekeeper, who just so happens to be in love with him. All three stories are MM and share snarky banter and a good world building. I really enjoyed these and I'd love for the author to expand them into a full length book. I was quite addicted from the start. Definitely a very enjoyable read and fully recommended.

Three romances set in the same world as Midsummer, but focusing on vampires and hunters in the rest of the world. From hunters for broken vamps to tops looking for a companion these stories have a little bit of work life, and a whole lot of love life. The romances are filled with uncertainty as those involved deny feelings as they face secrets, lies, and games. Each one has its own classic HEA and makes for an enjoyable short read!

I’m going to give all the stars because even though each story had its minor drawbacks, the stories kept me entertained and the MCs were sexy. I would have liked some sex scenes in all the stories as the vampires and their hunters were hot. I still enjoyed all three stories and I always like the short story format. I would read this author again.

Thoroughly enjoyable shorts

A quick fun read. The third is my favorite with a sweet MC pining a after a grumpy vampire. Tied together in the same world with at least tangential connecting characters.

MM paranormal romance with vampires and human vampire hunters who enforce the rules. Three stories with some characters in common. Pretty much everyone acts childishly.
Typos: The usual sloppiness. Sentence fragments, homophone mix-ups, repetition, incorrect punctuation, etc.

See although the first and second stories were fine the third (The Housekeeper) was totally my cup of tea, so why the 3 stars? Well I think that the resolution between Trevor and Richard was hastily done. Richard should have grovel more than just merely explaining that he lied when he said he didn't notice Trevor missing and why he lied.

I hesitated to buy this anthology because it was $3.99 for about 60 pages. In my Nook, however, it was 228 pages and I was quite happy with the length and the price.

Locke & Key: not quite 4 stars. Locke and Key are partners in hunting "broken" vampires. Broken vampires are humans that are changed into vamps but to not make the transition. They are licensed to hunt these vamps and keep them from the population at large. Partners for 5 years, Key does not hide his interest in Locke but Locke has a history of having a partner that betrayed him. As if this isn't hard enough to overcome, Locke knows that Key is keeping a secret from him and can't open himself up to someone who is keeping secrets when the pain of his other partner's betrayal is still fresh. I enjoyed this story and the two characters. The conflict (the secret) was interesting although a little predictable. The ending of the story was a little more rushed than I liked which is why it's not quite 4 stars for me.

Sharing: 3 stars. Preston is Locke's brother and has chosen not to hunt vampires like his other brothers, but to work the more political side of their family "business" and work with top vampires. A top vampire can be more dangerous than a rogue, broken vampire, with the power and influence they wield. Preston's job as a Hunter is almost like a handler. He watches over 12 top vampires to ensure they are not breaking any laws that would result in revoking their licenses. Of his 12 vampires, two in particular give him more grief than the others. Tired of playing games and being treated like a vampire toy or pet, Preston goes off grid and is surprised when his vamps seek him out. This was more of a strange "romance" if you can call it that then anything. I didn't really feel a connection between the 2 vamps and Preston except exasperation and frustration on Preston's part. Yes, he was attracted, but I didn't feel any emotional connection that I feel in Derr's other stories.

The Housekeeper: 4 stars. I thought this was a very sweet story. Trevor is the housekeeper to top vampire, Richard. Trevor, being plain and unassuming, is holding a torch for his boss with no hope of his affections being returned. But he takes comfort in the fact that Richard needs him and he helps to keep Richard's household in order...and if he gets to see a sleepy Richard every morning when all his defenses are down, so much the better. When Trevor takes a needed vacation and is attacked by other vampires, however, he eventually comes to learn that Richard doesn't value him the way he originally thought. This was my favorite story of the series because I love it when the underdog gets his HEA.

This book contains three short stories all revolving around the same world and all interconnecting through at least one character.

In Locke & Key, we are introduced to Locke and Key. Locke is a vampire hunter and Key is his working partner who's the brains of all Locke's hunts. They've worked together for five years and while there's a mutual attraction, Locke is hesitant to become lovers because of his instinct that says Key is hiding something. When Locke finally finds out what Key is hiding, it's enough to make Locke rethink the partnership they have. It takes Locke's brother Preston intervening to get Locke to realize how much of an asshole he is.

In Sharing, Preston has his hands full as a top hunter, making sure all the top vampires stay within the parameters of the rules. While having more than just a few top vampires to look after, his focus is mostly taken up with Allesandro and Trenton because of their childish actions of stealing the others humans. Allesandro and Trenton get jealous however when Richard, another top vampire, tries to make a meal out of Preston. Now, Trenton and Allesandro must learn to share if they ever hope of making Preston someone permanent in their lives.

In The Housekeeper, Trevor has been in love with Richard for almost as long as he's worked as Richard's housekeeper, although Richard barely sees him. While Richard is sulking from Preston's rejection, it brings the two closer together until an incident happens that pushes Richard back to his normal self and back to ignoring Trevor. It takes Trevor getting attacked by low level vampires and then quitting before Richard realizes everything that he's lost.

I really liked all three stories and loved the fact that they interlock. All the characters are very easy to like, even when they act like bastards. While there is no sex in this entire book, there is a bit of kissing and petting but the three stories are so short that you won't even miss the sex because the story drags you in anyway.

If you're looking for something cute, short and sweet, this is definitely something you should pick up. Recommended. [image error]

Locke And Key 3*

Sigh, I don't mind fucked up guys acting like assholes, but I do expect some major groveling and mea culpa galore. Didn't happen.
Locke and Key have been partners in vampire hunting for almost 6 years. Locke's a grumpy butt with a bad attitude but when he discovers Key's secret he's an asshole squared.
A little more backstory would have been good and a hellava lot more groveling was necessary for me to like it.
Key I liked a lot and I want to know where the kitten is!

Sharing 3*

This should have been a perfect story for me. I LOVE my m/m/m stories.
Alas, like the first, it was a little lacking in the backstory and I didn't quite get the reasoning or emotions or logistics.
Preston is cool and I liked the 2 Vamps. But did they just want him because he's a hunter? Or what? And what now?

The Housekeeper 3.85*
This was my favorite of the three stories.
Richard ( we met him in Sharing) is a top vamp and his housekeeper Trevor has fallen for him, but Richard doesn't seem to even notice him.
Unrequited love sucks, and then some.
Like the other two stories in this book. I really really wish it had been longer and more indepth.

The only real thing that disappointed me about this was the fact it was so short :(

The first story is about hunter's Locke and Key (har har) both have been together for five years. Key wants more from Locke, but Locke despite wanting the same thing refuses Key due to a bad partnering experience that lead to betrayal. It happens again with Key but it is more complicated and it had nothing to do with hurting Locke. I loved these guys they were genuine but I did feel like it was all rushed.

The second story is about Preston (Locke's brother) he manages the top-tier vampires. He's more about the politics than the killing. Preston is stuck between two-top vampires who act like babies. However, they stop fighting long enough to realise they love the same man. To be honest I am no fan of M/M/M books. However, I think the author handled them well and it was all so amusing.

The third story was my favourite and I really wanted more. Richard wanted Preston but Preston chose someone else. He's a little heartbroken not so much as his human housekeeper Trevor. Trevor has loved Richard but Richard has never actually seen him. The heartache Trevor went through was so sad. Loved Trveor and this story.

Lovely little collection of stories, though I have to admit I wanted more of them. Would love to see sequels to them. So let's talk about each story on their own:
The first story deals with Locke and Key and to be perfectly honest I took a while to warm up to. I found Locke a bit flat until the story finally got going. His references to another character acting like a girl made me see him as an idiot, which to be perfectly honest he kind of is. By the end though, I found myself forgiving him and I wanted more of this couple.
The second story I really enjoyed the delicious ending to this tale of a clueless idiot, one related to Locke surprisingly and who already appears in the first story. How could I not love the marvelous idiot with not two but three suitors?
And then...
We get to the cherry on the cake, the third story which I absolutely adored. It might have been the human gamer housekeeper in love with someone unattainable. I found this the most romantic of all, in a classic sense. Yet it worked perfectly in true Cinderella manner. I would love to see more of them, definitely my favorites among all the couples in this book.

I liked this collection a lot. I liked the new, fresh take on vampires, vampire-ish things, and vampire hunters. I'm especially fascinated by the idea of diet changing how appetizing a person is to a vampire.

I love Megan Derr collections where the stories intertwine, because by the time the last story comes along, I feel like I already know the characters and I'm therefore more excited to get to read their story.

My favorite of the three was Preston's story. Perhaps because the only thing better than being wooed by one gorgeous vampire is being wooed by two.

I did also really like the sweetness in the first story. Locke and Key are fantastic names, and I totally loved the exchange where they joked about their names. So cute!

Favorite Quote:
"Come on," Key goaded. "We're a regular bad porn joke, obviously it's meant to be."
Lock groaned.
Key just
grinned "Key. Locke."
"Wrong," Locke replied... "We've got two keys and no locks. So shut up."

Megan Derr is my go-to author whenever a book really disappoints me and I need a book that I'll certainly enjoy. Locke and Key definitely didn't disappoint me.
I liked all three stories, especially the first two.
I adored Key in the first story, probably because he reminds me of my darling bias Key from SHINee~

I liked how he didn't forgive Locke right away, but let him grovel for a bit.
While I'm not a very big fan of threesomes, I liked the second story. It was cute, although I really pitied the hunter for having to deal with such troublesome vampires xD
The third was cute too.
Definitely a book I can recommend to fantasy+romance+MM lovers!

I liked the characters in this anthology. Even the vampires, as pushy as some of them were, I actually enjoyed. My favorite of the three stories was the one with Locke and Key. I wish it had been longer, though. A bit iffy on the story with Preston and his two vampire lovers, though. Mostly because you never really got to see enough of Alessandro and Tremont to understand why Preston would want either of them, let alone both. Trevor and Richard's story was cute, but I was actually almost expecting Trevor to end up with Billie instead. It's too bad this was so short as I liked the take on vampire mythology and society in these stories.
