Grades 4-7

There have been a plethora of Sherlock Holmes mystery series aimed at middle grade readers-- most involving a Holmes relative who has inherited the detecting gene. This particular series, based on the original stories, looks like it will be a winner for a number of reasons. Certainly, the graphic novel format may appeal to readers who might not normally pick up a Sherlock Holmes mystery. The authors and illustrator do an excellent job of keeping the original tone and that 19th century feel. The language is accessible without being overly simplistic. All in all, a solid retelling of a classic Sherlock Holmes mystery.

One of the best of the Sherlock mysteries whereby the protagonist gets bested and it has the classic tropes that have been used for mystery stories ever since. Conan Doyle ranked this one in his own top five.

Each player in the story in the story a classic caricature, including the larger than life Wilhelm Gottsreich Sigismond von Ormstein, Grand Duke of Cassel-Felstein and hereditary king of Bohemia.

Most importantly, it's the one with Irene Adler as the femme fatale and she completely steals the show.

A short graphic novel of where Sherlock crosses wits with Irene Adler and loses. However in the overall sense, he does win as Irene assures him that she will not trouble the King of Bohemia any further. Sherlock only asks for the photo of Irene as his payment. It is proof that she got under his skin and he is intrigued by her.

I love the funny and interesting parts of it. I hate how movies completely changed the actual story. I liked it a lot! Great book! :)

Meh. Not a great way to introduce young readers to Sherlock. The plot was weak, Irene Adler seemed dull, and Sherlock lacked brilliance.

A readable graphic novel adaptation of 'A Scandal in Bohemia'. I enjoyed this format, which told the story in a different way which made it all the more entertaining.

It seems that there is no case foo hard for Sherlock Holmes. Especially if you as Watson, the man is a genius if not a little crazy. This particular adventure finds Sherlock and Watson working for royalty. There mission, to retrieve a picture that is being used to blackmail this certain royal member. It seems that many people have been sent in to retrieve this picture and none have succeeded. None of them were Sherlock and Watson though. It would seem that they've never had a target like Miss Irene before.

This was actually a graphic novel version of the original book. This was also the first graphic novel that I've ever read. I liked this graphic novel actually which surprised me. I want to say that it's well written but I don't necessarily know how much of that is Shaw. The illustrations were really well done and made the story that much better. I feel like the pictures told a lot more of Shaw's version of the story than the words. It was many bright colors and excited features that added to the thrill of the mystery. Although at times I imagined Robert Downey Jr. Face I still think that the illustrations were well done. This graphic novel was very interesting to read and I think the perfect one to get my toes wet on.

In this short comic of Sherlock Holmes the clever, antagonizing Sherlock once again stays one step ahead of everyone, or so it seems. With the help of John he searches out the location of an incriminating photograph. This was similar to all Sherlock remakes just simplified to a childish point.
This is a cute, quick read. Since the TV series Sherlock and the Movies Sherlock Holmes, staring Robert Downey Junior, came out I find it hard to be pleased with portrayals of Sherlock Holmes. This book was meant for children and read that way. The mystery wasn't so mysterious and the end of the book had me wanting for a more devious villain. Sherlock's positive outlook is the only thing that pleased me in the end. If it had been longer I probably would have been upset but since it was short and took me a whole of ten minutes to read I would say time not wasted. But at the same time I didn't gain anything from reading it.

This novel is basically a retelling of Arthur Conan Doyle’s short story, “A Scandal in Bohemia.” The story is about Sherlock and Watson taking on a job from the king of Bohemia. The king wants Sherlock to retrieve an incriminating document from Irene Adler. This document can ruin the king’s marriage plans if it is made public. Sherlock comes up with an ingenious plan but things do not turn out the way they expected.

It is an interesting adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock story, “A Scandal in Bohemia.” I felt like it was just a retelling of the story and the only thing original is the artwork. I finished the book in fifteen minutes. I would only recommend this version to those who have already read Doyle’s story. Anyone else who has not read Doyle’s story should not read this first because it will ruin the ending.

This comic book version of Sherlock Holmes was a fast and fun read.
Holmes and Watson take a case to recover an item for the King of Bohemia from a former lover. They use skill, timing, wit, and dress-up to complete the task.

I haven't read Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's version of this story, so I don't know how closely this comic/ short graphic novel follows it, but I enjoyed it! I only gave it four stars because I didn't really like the logic in it, it seemed that the way things unfolded wouldn't have actually worked out... But all in all, I enjoyed this quick and fun read.

“Sherlock Holmes and a Scandal in Bohemia” (On the Case with Holmes & Watson #1 – Murray Shaw)

Great series of adaptations. This one starts them well.

Of Irene Adler Sherlock says: “As she stepped into the carriage, I saw her face. It was one a man might die for!”

“Never before had his cool-headed reasoning allowed him to comment on a woman's charms.”

“Holmes went onto his bedroom and soon returned looking like a gentle, simple-minded country clergyman.”

In this first graphic adaptation of the Sherlock Holmes stories, Holmes meets the clever Irene Adler, one of the few characters (and the only woman) to ever beat the great detective at his own game. I've been impressed in all these adaptations at how faithfully they have kept to the original text, and yet are still age-appropriate and interesting mysteries for kids today.

This graphic adaptation of a Scandal in Bohemia is very faithful to the original story written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It doesn't really supplement the original story in any fresh, new way but I don't think that it is meant to. It's great that a 4th grader can have a fun time reading through this graphic novel and have an exact knowledge of a classic story.

In “A Scandal in Bohemia” we meet Irene Adler. She is portrayed by Rachel McAdams in the 2009 Sherlock Holmes movie. This is a quick three chapter short story that can be read in a a lazy afternoon. The traditional Sherlock character does not disappoint but you do not see much character development in Dr. Watson. Read the book and enjoy a quick visit to 1890s London.

This graphic novel is a fairly good, though simple, adaptation of one of Sherlock Holmes' tales. The language is still slightly formal, but certainly accessible for a younger audience. There is a recap at the end that breaks down how the mystery was solved and there is also a list of other various suggested readings, including fiction, nonfiction and websites.
