The magic and fantasy aspect is on the fringes (so far) so all readers that typically swear off fantasy as a rule... this is the exception.
Lots of twists and turns that had me squealing out loud. My husband, who is also reading, but is well behind me (I'm caught up, he's on book 2 or 3 maybe) keeps firing filthy looks my way saying 'gah! don't tell me! " (I get a gold star for not revealing a thing despite my practically exploding with wanting to talk about it.) Every single time there came a bend in the story, where he could either have done A, B or C...George would find a way to have to plot go tearing off after possibility X, and leave me reading my eyes into bloody mush trying to keep up! Fantastic - thoroughly enjoying it and I literally cannot wait for the next book.
Thank the lord for miracles- the HBO series should hold me over for a while.
Comparisons to Tolkein are surprising accurate. It's like a Tolkein book with sex and violence. The first book is the real blockbuster. The alternate world is fully populated with its own turns of phrase, customs, etc. The characters are vivid and you get so invested, you enjoy all the rest of the books and read them like satisfying popcorn. However, it is ultimately escapism, not literature so I can't give it the 5th star even though I devoured the books as fast as I could read them. The fantasy aspects are very light in the beginning but get increasingly heavy as the series progresses (to the detriment of the series, I think as the books are best on character and plot and not so strong on the fantasy or novelty). Like Tolkein, the characters are so numerous you will find yourself referencing the guides in the back to keep them all straight.
I believe this is one of the 2 or 3 best Fantasy series ever. It's got a great story, with sub-plots, and fantastic characters who the reader will actually care about. Also, Martin has chosen a unique way of presenting his story; he doesn't just lay out normal, numbered, progressive chapters. In fact, the "chapters" aren't numbered; instead he gives us each section from a different character's view-their speech and their thoughts. It's extremely effective because we gain a much better understanding into that person. This historical fantasy should be read by anyone, even those who don't think they like what they think of as fantasy.
The books started out pretty good. A nice light read, but after the third book, I feel he's just dragging it out because he spent so much time developing all the characters in his D&D games that he can't let them go, no matter what. They're an addictive read, but it feels as if he's abusing my attention and inability to not finish a book. The cast of characters is staggering and often unnecessary. Great writing style though, and very entertaining. It's almost impossible to put the books down, though I do get weary of reading them.
Loved all the books thou Game of Thrones was the best then probably A Dance of Dragons. Even thou it took a while to get thru all five I have fallen in love with the series. Can't wait for the next one!
fantasy, but with character twists. the characters that you think are main, may not be. the ones you think are bad, you will eventually like. will the meek inherit the earth... erm... land?
Halfway through the third book in the series -- I'm getting them from the library through Overdrive, and each one is so long that I don't finish it in time, and have to reserve it again. They're incredibly bloodthirsty, and Martin has no problem killing off his main characters, but they're page turners. Using E. M. Forster's classic definition of story vs. plot (in his "Aspects of the Novel" -- required reading for any fiction writer), the Ice and Fire books are pure story. You read them to find out what happens next. And for that, they can't be beat.
Im taking a break from "Lit-ra-chur" by finishing this dragons-and knights series. I checked the kindle verstion out from the library, so I have 2 weeks to read this 1040-hardcover-pages book before it vanishes.
What great, complicated intrigue!? What monsters! Both human and non- ! This series totally transports the reader to an amazing world!Right up there near Tolkien & Robert Jordan!
