The second book in the Witchs' Brew Mystery series is as much fun as the first.

Phoebe Winchester has inherited The Earl's Study, a book store and tea shop, from her aunt Eudora who was a witch. Phoebe has discovered her own witchy abilities and she is beginning to come to grips with what she can do.

In Death by a Thousand Sips she discovers a dead body at an auction - or at least her cheeky ginger cat Bob does. That part involves bloody paw prints! Phoebe has to call on her old friend and private investigator, Rich, to help her prove she did not commit the deed herself.

This is a fun mystery with some great moments when Phoebe's magical powers kick in. I am already looking forward to more magic and maybe a little romance in the next book.

Death by a Thousand Sips is the second book in the Witches Brew Mysteries, It takes place in the town of Raven Creek. Phoebe Winchester is the main character who inherited her bookstore and tea shop as well as a Victorian house from her aunt Endora who was a witch.. She later finds out she is one also. She also inherited a cat named Bob. Her friend, Amy owns the Sugar Plum Fairy Bakery. Honey is also a good friend who owns New Moon. She is also a witch. Rich Lofting is a PI who was a childhood friend and now maybe boyfriend. His brother, Leo owns the grocery store. All of them know that she is a witch. Rich Lofting is a PI who lives over her shop and maybe boyfriend as well as his brother, Leo who owns the grocery store. He and his brother made a promise to Endora that they would watch over her. All these people know that she is a witch.

Daphne, a student works part time at the store along with Imogen Prater her full time employee. She shows Phoebe an ad about an auction and sale at Weatherly Manor. Unbeknownst to her Bob sneaked into her car which she discovered while driving to the auction. She leaves him in the car when she gets to her destination. She meets Madeline Morrow who is running the sale and her assistant, Fanny Houseman. Madeline takes her to the library to look at the second hand books and paperbacks. She decides to bid on them and wins bid.

While at the auction Phoebe sees Bob come in the room. She leaves to find him. She finds the cat on the second floor and when picking him up she notices that he has blood on his paws and lower body. She follows the floor prints and finds Madeline dead and calls the police. Patsy Martin and her partner Kwan Kim arrive.

This is here the story takes off with so much going on that I can't put it all down on paper I will leave this to the reader to enjoy up to the exciting climax. I really enjoyed this story and look forward to the next book in this series.

Thank you NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for this ARC.

News of an estate sale sent Phoebe Winchester to a nearby town, hoping for a chance to bid for the huge collection of books, which would stock her bookstore and tea shop, The Earl's Study, for sometime to come. Leaving her two helpers to run the shop, as well as leaving her cat Bob behind in the shop, was the plan. But Bob had somehow snuck into the car - his presence was not unwelcome, but could be awkward. The estate agent showed her the book collection and Phoebe hoped the bidding wouldn't go too high. After she secured the collection as the highest bidder, her delight turned to horror when she discovered a dead body upstairs in the library.

Being a suspect meant Phoebe was determined to prove her innocence, as well as discover the killer. With her good friend and private investigator, Rich Lofting, helping out - reluctantly it must be said - Phoebe quite obviously came close to the solution, as she was threatened. Would she discover who the killer was, or would it be her last effort at being an amateur sleuth?

Death by a Thousand Sips is the 2nd in the Witches' Brew Mystery series by Gretchen Rue and it was quite entertaining. Bob is adorable - his picture is on the book's cover - and his constant presence in Phoebe's life is cute. There wasn't a lot of "witchy stuff" in this episode but what there was was fun! I'm looking forward to checking out #3 when it's published. Recommended.

With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

Phoebe Winchester inherited a nice bookstore and tea shop—the Earl’s Study—from her Aunt Eudora. Phoebe also inherited Bob, the bookstore tabby cat, who travels back and forth from the Victorian home they share with Phoebe. Eudora was a witch who could make special tea blends for customers, and her niece is worried about whether she can carry on her Aunt’s work. Attending an auction at a large estate to bid on a huge lot of popular fiction books, Phoebe is horrified when Bob’s bloody paw prints lead to an upstairs library with a dead body in a pool of blood! Who killed the auction coordinator?

This story moves at a nice pace, and characters from book one return. Amy, the baker; Rich, a P.I. and possible romantic interest; and Honey, a fellow witch are the ones I like. There is humor, and the Washington State setting seems peaceful. The plot is plausible, and the story is entertaining, although I liked the first book better. There didn’t seem to be as much mystery in this one. I noted the overuse of the word, “smirk” which was annoying. I like that Phoebe is going to have cats in the bookstore area that are up for adoption, and I enjoy lovable Mr. Loughery, an elderly man who comes every day to read, drink tea, and pet Bob.

The author drops clues throughout the plot line as to the killer, and once all the puzzle pieces are connected, the reader can see that greed was the motive. A nice, entertaining witch cozy mystery.

I honestly reviewed an unedited digital arc provided by NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books. All opinions are my own. Thank you.

If you like a bit of the paranormal mixed in with a cozy mystery, you’ll enjoy Death By A Thousand Sips, book two in the Witches’ Brew mystery series. Phoebe, recently divorced, inherited her beloved Aunt Eudora’s Victorian mansion and business in a small town in Washington State and moved there. So now she is the owner of a combined bookstore and tea room. Eudora was known for her custom tea blends, and was rumored to be a witch; luckily she left the recipes/instructions for those tea blends for Phoebe! It turns out that Phoebe does have some of her aunt’s uncanny abilities; Phoebe has the ability to momentarily stop time, but she hasn’t figured out how to control it yet. In this story, it came in handy during a car crash but Phoebe couldn’t call up the ability at another point in the story where it also would have come in handy.

The mystery this time concerns a murder at an estate sale that Phoebe was attending in the hope of buying a lot of books for her store.

Her cat, Bob, is a major player in this story. He has a talent for getting into a bit of trouble, but he is a super-sweet kitty.

I’m a tea lover, so the special blends had me salivating, along with the descriptions of Phoebe making her treats for the store. There are some yummy-sounding recipes included at the end of the book, including how to make your own sour dough starter.

It’s been a while since I’ve read book one, so I can confidently say that this would work fine as a standalone.

Thank you to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for the opportunity to read a review copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

A fun, witchy murder mystery set in a quaint small town in Washington state.

Description:
Phoebe Winchester is back on the case in Raven Creek when a body is discovered at an estate sale in Gretchen Rue’s second book in the Witches’ Brew mystery series, perfect for fans of Laura Childs and Cleo Coyle.

Ever since she moved to Raven Creek, Washington, Phoebe Winchester knew she would have to grow accustomed to having a lot on her plate. With a dash of magic, a pinch of sleuthing skills, and a spoonful of friendly assistance, Phoebe needs to uncover the killer to keep Raven Creek safe once again. But if she doesn’t—will she find herself in even more hot water?

My Thoughts:

This book was lots of fun with Phoebe learning to be a witch and also sticking her nose into police business when there's a murder. Apparently in the earlier book she had gotten herself involved in a murder as well. In this book the murder happens at an estate sale, and there are several avenues to investigate to find the truth. I liked the character and found her cat, Bob, adorable. Bob seems to have his own agenda. I also liked the paranormal aspects. I'm wondering if there will be something in the next book about her nemesis's nephew she's going to rent property to for his candle shop. I'll be looking for the next book in this series since I enjoyed the characters in this small town. I assume the love interest will develop more as well as maybe the antagonism with the one person on the council who causes problems for Phoebe.

Thanks to Crooked Lane Books through Netgalley for an advance copy. This book will be published on September 5, 2023.

“Dead people have the best books.”

QUICK SUMMARY
As the second installment in the Witches’ Brew Mystery series, Death by a Thousand Sips had a lot of promise, but lacked some of that same charm from the first book. The mystery wasn’t nearly as interesting and the world-building went from being insightful to overwhelming, but nonetheless this book managed to keep my attention.

Another wonderful installment of the Witches' Brew Mystery series, and I am seriously loving this cast of characters! In Death by a Thousand Sips, Phoebe is getting used to being a shop owner and learning more about her magical abilities as she gets thrust into yet another murder case. This time, our buddy Bob the cat is a bit more prominent in the story and as a cat lover, I was extremely happy about that. Phoebe never had a cat until she had to take care of Bob, and now she MIGHT just be turning into a crazy cat lady. She'll get there... 😉 The pacing was fast, and I loved getting to know the characters a bit better, along with the surprising conclusion of the mystery.

Kristin Price narrates the audiobook once again and once I loved her narration. Her voice and mannerisms go perfectly with Phoebe's character, and she's honestly just really pleasant to listen to. I felt like this book was over in the blink of an eye and I found myself wishing it had been even longer! While the whodunnit isn't the most shocking thing in the world, it did manage to surprise me, and I think if you are a fan of cozies in general you will just be along for the ride. I can't wait for another installment, and I recommend reading these books in order, so you don't get a bunch of spoilers.

It's turning spring in Raven Creek, Washington, and Phoebe Winchester has weathered her first fall and winter as owner of a tea shop and bookstore and she has settled in to her new home. When she heads off to an estate sales thst has a large lot of used popular fiction and paperbacks thst would sell well in the bookstore, she discovers, rather Bob her cat discovers, a dead body. Phoebe feels compelled to do a little sleuthing so she won't be suspect #1. Meanwhile, we get the everyday flow of life there and that is just charming. Really fallen in love with this series!

Dollycas's Thoughts

Phoebe Winchester is settling into her new life in Raven Creek, Washington where she is living in a Victorian manor and running The Earl’s Study, a tea shop and bookstore she inherited from her Aunt Eudora. She is also gaining knowledge about her new magical powers.

When Phoebe learns of an estate sale selling a wide variety of books she is curious and hopeful that there will be books she can add to the bookstore's inventory. After winning the lot that she wanted the day takes a tragic turn when she and the frisky feline, Bob find a dead body in a small alcove. Detective Patsy Martin arrives on the scene, sees Phoebe, gets her statement, and tells her not to leave town. She knows she needs help to prove she is innocent again so she asks/convinces her childhood friend, now a private investigator Rich, to give her a big assist even though she sometimes forgets her own name when she is around the hunky investigator.

Can they work together to clear her name and solve this case? Will it take a little magic? or just some great amateur sleuthing? Or will her confidence in her abilities put her right in the path of the killer?

____

In this second Witches' Brew Mystery, the characters are emerging in wonderful ways. Phoebe is finding her place in Raven Creek and her magical gift is more known. It comes out at very opportune times, she still needs to learn how to control it. Thankfully she has her delightful friend Honey, also a witch, to guide her. Her friendships with Leo and Rich are so much fun. The childhood friendships have grown and while the guys had made a promise to Endora to watch over Phoebe and they take that responsibility seriously, their friendships are organic and Phoebe and Rich's relationship is becoming something more. I love the banter, sass, and good humor between them. Amy owns the bakery next door to The Earl’s Study, and she and Phoebe have become great friends. Imogen and Daphne both worked with Endora and have stayed to work with Phoebe and help her learn all there is to know about the place but they can't make the special teas that Endora did. Another thing she needs to learn.

The Earl’s Study has a very special customer who is truly a friend. Mr. Loughery. He is an elderly man who comes in every morning for tea and to read his latest used book purchase. Across from him in the other big leather chair by the fireplace is his buddy, Bob, the cat, Endora's cat, now Phoebe's. He stays for the day, sometimes napping just like Bob, and always ready to give feedback about new recipes being tried out in the kitchen. If he is late Phoebe, Daphne, and Imogen worry. They care about him and he cares about them. Phoebe has a loving idea in this story. It made me like her even more.

I love the way Ms. Rue sets a scene. Her words aptly describe each setting so you can envision each place easily. In this book, we go to the old Weatherly mansion and one room would have definitely be my happy place.

"Belle from Beauty and the Beast would want to marry this room."
Yes, the room was filled with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves "positively groaning under the weight of hundreds and hundreds of books."

Ms. Rue has written a very twisty mystery full of red herrings. Phoebe goes through a lot trying to piece all the clues together and she goes a little rogue when she thinks she has everything figured out. She had a huge surprise. I was thrilled because my theory was right even though I doubted myself once or twice. The reveal wrapped up the mystery nicely but was mild as far as showdowns are concerned.

Death by a Thousand Sips was a fun entertaining light paranormal mystery with appealing characters including the charming Bob, a small town setting, with bits of magic, humor, and romantic tension. I look forward to reading The Grim Steeper when it is released in September.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Thank you to the Crooked Lane Books and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC.

“Death by a Thousand Sips” by Gretchen Rue the 2nd instalment in the "A Witches Brew Mystery" series. I loved this book and totally added the series to my favourite witchy list!

Phoebe Winchester is back on the case in Raven Creek when a body is discovered at an estate sale in Gretchen Rue’s second book in the Witches’ Brew mystery series, perfect for fans of Laura Childs and Cleo Coyle.

I liked going back to Raven Creek, Washington and visiting with Phoebe and Bob at the Earl’s Study.
We start to get a better understanding of Phoebe and her inheritance with all it entails. She has a good core group of friends as well as a possible romance in the works. I really like her idea of having a cat shelter located in the book store for older cats that have been in shelters to long.

It was entertaining, full of twists and turns and I didn’t completely guess whodunnit until Phoebe did.

Plus all the descriptions of the teas had me wanting a hot cup of tea or an ice tea and one of Phoebe’s sourdough toasts (luckily there are recipes in the the back of the book)

I highly recommend this series to all my cozy loving friends and I can’t wait for book 3 to come out!

Death by a Thousand Sips is a great story by Gretchen Rue.
Phoebe is a fun character, and her personality shines through in this book.
Anxious to attend an estate sale to hopefully add stock to her book store, she has no idea of the things that are about to happen.
The estate sale organizer seems cold and aloof, but Phoebe doesn't think on it too much, she's there to bid on books, and nothing more.
When the organizer is killed, Phoebe becomes a person of interest, so she turns to those around her for help trying to piece the puzzle together.
Her cat, Bob, is adorable and his quirky antics made me laugh out loud.
I'm excited to see how the series continues, and I'm happy to recommend this book to other readers.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of the book.

This is my favorite series right now! Phoebe has inherited her aunt's home and bookstore/tea shop in the Washington (state) suburbs. (Her aunt was also known as the town's local witch, so maybe Phoebe inherited more than meets the eye from Aunt Eudora.)

I love the recurring characters in here, including Phoebe's employees at the shop, her orange tabby, Bob (who communicates like one of our former cats), Honey, the owner of the local 'new age' shop, the 'knit and sip' ladies, Mr. Loughery, Rich and Leo, etc. If you've ever wanted to own a book / tea shop, there is a lot of behind-the-scenes action in here, too, which I've been really enjoying, esp. since Phoebe wants to be able to make their unique tea blends just as powerful as those made by Eudora.

I read a good series more for the recurring characters than the mystery, but I always enjoy the mysteries here too. The magic is whimsical, as Eudora only ever used her powers for good, and Phoebe follows in her footsteps. The blending and infusing of magical tea actually makes me want to become a tea drinker. I'd buy their Count Your Sheep blend, for insomnia, for sure!

This series is still being written; the fourth book was just released. I want to thank my local library for buying this series in both print and CD format (and for putting my name first on the list for the CD copy they just ordered, per my request). A good local library system is priceless. So glad I found this series, highly recommended in both print and CD format.

Buckle up - we are diving into the newest book in the Witches Brew series.

PROS
* Great [if WILDLY stupid in this one] MC [Phoebe], and a great supporting cast. I really like all of them. Leo is particularly adorable.
* Books. The Earl's Study [WHO would not want to sit in a comfy chair there and read and then browse and absorb the book love?]. The libraries at the auction [I may have actually swooned].
* Bob the Cat. I love him. He is the heart and soul of these books.
* Mr. Loughery. THIS is how you write a "senior" character and it is such a joy when he is in the story, even just as he naps with Bob. He is a delightful way to honor the older generation and the books are so much better with the addition of him. I can only hope he stays in all the books to come.
* ALL. THE. BAKED. GOODS. OMGOSH. I think I gained 5lbs just from reading. Add in the special lunch toast and I did spend a lot of the book both hungry and drooling.

Unfortunately, for me, the cons list is longer and it still makes me sad to have to write all of this [I had such HIGH hopes after book 1].

CONS
* Only ONE use of magic in the WHOLE book. One. The book suffers from this. The first book was filled with magic and fun and it was greatly missed.
* Another reviewer said this and I realized it was the very words I was looking for - this book was totally bogged down by minutiae; there is a LOT of blather [see a couple bullet points down] and repetition [a lot] - we are NOT five - we all know about her aunt and the house and the rest of the inheritance and we do not need constant reminders [there were over 8 references to this in the book] of it. Once at the beginning is enough to remind those who have read the previous book and enough of an explanation for those who have picked this up as a standalone. Also, we didn't need the constant reminder that Phoebe found the body. Seriously.
* The title is extremely misleading. While it didn't ruin the experience for me by any stretch of the imagination, I DID keep wondering when it would come into play and it just never did and I will admit to a little bit of disappointment. That is such a great title to completely waste that way.
* Did I mention that there is not nearly enough magic??
* The MC's complete disregard for others and herself and her willingness to put herself in extreme danger that went above the normal MC "stupidity" in this regard and it was very frustrating to read.
* I love a good descriptive book, but sometimes less is more. Seriously. WOW.
* The MC making herself the "suspect" when there is absolutely no reason for her to do so [and gives her, in her mind, the reason she needs to sleuth]. This was a totally absurd premise and really insults the reader [as we know she is absolutely NOT the suspect].

I loved the first book so much and was so excited about this one and to have so many things that just didn't work for me [though I didn't quit and I never felt I wanted to skim pages, so that is something right?] was very disappointing. And while most of the mystery WAS an actual mystery to me [I find that I have a harder time figuring stuff out when I read these at 5am and still in sleep-mode! LOL], there were parts I had figured out and because they are so thinly veiled within the story, the whole mystery fell rather flat for me [].

I will absolutely read book 3 should there be one, as overall, I really like the MC [when she is not doing stupid things] and the cast of supporting characters and how they all interact with each other and I hope that if there is a book 3, it is much more like book 1 and full of all the magic and murder and mayhem and fun that that book offered.

Thank you to NetGalley, Gretchen Rue, and Crooked Lane Books for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This series has the best characters! The main character owns a combination tea shop and bookstore. Phoebe is a wonderful character who has recently found out that she is a witch and is still getting comfortable with her newfound part of her personality. She's off to an estate auction to pick up some books for her store and of course her sidekick, Bob, an orange tabby finds a dead body. Pheobe's curiosity once again finds her at the center of the mystery, but she may become the next dead body if she isn't careful. The plot was fun and fantastic with the perfect twists and turns to the story to keep you turning pages and on the edge of your seat. I love the friendships she has formed with her neighbors and of course an incredibly good-looking private investigator as a good friend doesn't hurt! I absolutely can't wait to read what comes next for these characters!

Death by a Thousand Sips is the perfect cozy mystery to curl up with on a rainy afternoon. You can sip your tea or coffee and enjoy.

This is book two in A Witches' Brew Mystery, and Phoebe Winchester is back. This installment begins with life back to normal for the citizens of Raven Creek after the events of Steeped to Death. Phoebe and her cat Bob are getting back to normal while she runs The Earl's Study and practices her witchy abilities.
That is until Bob happens upon a dead body, and once again, Phoebe finds herself investigating.

This series has everything you could ever want in a magical, cozy mystery. There are plenty of twists, lots of new friends, a curious cat, delicious sounding recipes, a budding romance, and a little bit of magic.

Phoebe will do whatever it takes to solve the crime and protect those she cares about.
I can't wait for her to be on the case again.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Phoebe Winchester lives in Raven's Creek, WA. She owns a tea/ book shop that she inherited from her Aunt Eudora. She attends an estate sale to buy some popular fiction books. She sees Bob the cat sauntering around the estate and decides to follow him. When they happen upon the body of the estate sale manager. She decides to investigate. She didn't know the victim and she's not the prime suspect. The police and Rich tell her to butt out.

At first I was kind of annoyed by Phoebe butting into the investigation. But she redeems herself in the end. I'm excited to see what else happens.

I received a free copy from the publisher through Netgalley and am voluntarily reviewing it.

When I was deciding on my next read I looked over my pile of review copies and promptly picked up this one, which was literally the one with the most far away due date, but I knew I wanted to read this book. And I was correct, this book was like the perfect fit my reading mood and I thoroughly enjoyed this second Witches' Brew book.

Phoebe is a bit more settled in her new house, she's gotten the hang of the day to day work at her bookstore and café and she's doing well settling into the small town. I liked how this book takes place months after the first book and I enjoyed seeing how Phoebe was doing now. This book had such a cozy vibe and I really enjoyed reading about Phoebe's daily life, her work, her house and her cat Bob. She also is a witch and there's some magic sprinkled throughout the pages, which I think worked well here. I liked the ways it popped up here and there and how she used a spell to help with the mystery.

The mystery had me pretty stumped, I couldn't figure out who had done it and the clues take some time to accumulate. I felt like I was missing something and even though Phoebe knew she was getting close, I felt like I wasn't close at all to figuring it out. I had fun seeing it all play out and how Phoebe gets involved. I liked how she was mostly smart about investigating, gets backup when she can and when she gets into trouble tries to be more careful. Even the final confrontation she handles pretty well even though I thought that wasn't the smartest plan to go there alone. I did find the reveal a bit anti-climactic, there was a twist, but I didn't really like it. And the showdown is not as exciting to read as it's a similar scene that I've read a few times in other cozies. I also felt like she didn't really figure it out until the murderer revealed they were the murderer.

I enjoyed being back in this town and reading about the characters I met in book 1 more. The daily life scenes are definitely my favorite part of this book and it's so fun to read about Phoebe. The cozy vibe is present everywhere and I liked seeing more of Phoebe's friends, employees and even acquaintances.

To summarize: This was an awesome sequel! It fit my reading mood perfectly and had the perfect blend of cozy vibe, fun daily life scenes and an interesting mystery. I really like how cozy this book feels, I enjoyed reading about Phoebe, her store and the town and the comforting cozy vibe it all had. I enjoyed the mystery, but it did have me stumped. I didn't really have any guesses about who had done it as it felt I was missing something. I liked seeing it all play out, but I found the ending a bit anti-climactic and didn't enjoy the twist as much. The daily life scenes are probably my favorite of this book. There's a touch of magic as well and I liked reading more about Phoebe's magic. I like the small town vibe and the cozy book and tea shop Phoebe runs. I already look forward to my next visit to this town!

Death by a Thousand Sips has all of the components of a cozy story you can indulge in while nestled in a soft chair with a warm drink: descriptive paragraphs detailing the intricacies of running a book store/tea shop and feasting upon delectable confections and savory delights. If you are intrigued by these facts alone, then this is a book I would recommend to you.

What I wanted more of in this story was the mystery, romance, and witchy element. If I were to break down this story into four parts it would look like this: 60% cozy, 45% mystery, 3% witchy, 2% romance. I am newer to the cozy mystery genre, but what I am the most interested in is having the cozy interspersed throughout the other elements of the story, not dominating through long descriptive paragraphs that don't carry the momentum this story needs.

The mystery in this book had some higher stakes for Phoebe and I could feel a nice tension and pacing to the story when this plot thread was being focused upon. I adored the first book in this series and was looking for that same magic- I know it is there, it just got bogged down under the blanket of coziness that dominates this story.

I would recommend this book to readers looking for a low stakes read that allows them to sink into lengthy descriptions of food and small town life minutiae.

4.5 stars rounded up to 5.

Thank you Netgalley, Crooked Lane Books, and Gretchen Rue for providing a digital copy in return for an honest review

I didn't read the first book but it was easy slip into the series. Very classic cozy mystery but in a good way. Fans of Cleo Coyle will enjoy this one, including the recipes in the back.

Phoebe was fun to learn about and get to know. Aged right with life experiences. Cute nods to a bookstore and tiny cafe owner without being obnoxious. Like discussing popular certain books without title references.

A bit of Cabot Cove and Stars Hollow in the best way of small towns. Maybe add some Samantha Stephens.. The low level magic enhances the storyline.

Great side characters and settings. The friendships and foundation building towards creating a new life feels authentic.. Phoebe fits and appreciates her team's different skills. Love her newer plans for the store.

I guessed the ending and mystery early on but I didn't take any points away. The journey and clues made it fun to follow along. Nice nostalgic factors without detracting.

The only parts I took off points were for plot repetition (inner thoughts) and the romance. Romance wasn't the problem so much as expected future conflicts. Both easily course corrected in the next few books

Highly recommend for cozy mystery readers. It's a fun, quick read. Perfect vacation or beach bag read. Can't wait to dive into the next one.

This is the second book in the series, but I had no problems following along with the storyline.

What drew me to the story was how the protagonist owned a bookstore/tea shop! It's set in Raven Creek, Washington, where Phoebe Winchester inherited the bookstore/tea shop and her aunt's Victorian home. Bob, the cat, was an extra perk! Pheobe learned that jokes about her aunt being a witch weren't farfetched, and much to Pheobe's surprise, she is a witch also.

Interested in getting more books for the bookstore, Phoebe attends an estate sale. Her stowaway cat, Bob, didn't remain where he was supposed to, and Phoebe had to go on the hunt for him. To her horror, Bob leads her to the body of Madeline, who works for the auction. Pheobe is panicked that she may be a suspect, so she decides to try some magic on herself and enlist the help of Rich Lofting. Someone else feels she's a little too close for comfort, putting Pheobe in danger.

The story was engaging, and I loved the paranormal aspects. I really enjoyed this cozy mystery!

I received an advanced reader's copy and voluntarily read and reviewed this book.

Very fun cozy and a great follow up to the first in the series, which I also enjoyed. I love some details for visualization but this seemed overly bogged down with minutia that I found myself just skipping over about halfway through the read. Love the characters in this series and am enjoying the rescue cats - as long as they don't get put into dangerous situations :) I was so happy to see recipes for the great food in the book were provided. Fun series that I am looking forward to next installments.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for allowing me to read an advanced copy and provide my honest opinion.

I really enjoyed book 1, and I think I liked book 2 even more. Phoebe owns/runs The Earl Study, and it sounds like a place I would love to visit. Books, tea, & yummy pastries. I love the community and friends that she has, and I really enjoyed that the cops were not dumb or mean. Phoebe also has help this time from her handsome PI friend, which I think was a smart move and made things even more interesting. I am eagerly awaiting book 3! (Pre-ordered!) Oh! && I thought the narrator on the audio did a great job.

This was book two in the series. I really enjoyed book one, but this one left me a little flat. It was okay, and I finished it, but a lot of the "sparkle" that made book one an enjoyable read was, I felt, missing from the second book.

First off, I found Penelope a bridge too far on the "annoying, clueless, buttinsky busybody" scale. Yes, I understand that the majority of main characters in a cozy mystery ARE going to be on that scale. I accept this, and sometimes the main character in a cozy is written such that their busy-bodying (yes, I know that's not a word, oh well) actually makes them endearing and/or likable if it's done well. I didn't feel that with Penelope in this book.

The mystery wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything particularly unique or special. It was adequate.

Overall, there was just nothing about this book that really drew or held my attention. It's fine, but I probably won't go out of my way to read future books in this series when there are so many cozy series' out there to choose from. You really need to have something different to grab a reader in this genre and I simply didn't feel book two in this series had that.

Setting the Scene: Phoebe Winchester is settling into Raven Creek, her late Aunt Eudora's home, her tea and book shop, Earl Gray's, and her secret role as landlord to most if the downtown properties. The magic is taking a bit more work, but there is progress. Phoebe also has friends she treasures, and there might even be a slow burn romance in her future. For now, she is excited to go on a short road trip to an estate sale/auction to replenish the shop's used book supply. The last thing she expects to find is a dead body, specifically, the body of the woman in charge of the sale and auction. Does Phoebe's recurring presence at murder scenes place her at the top of the police suspect list? Fearing that will be the case, Phoebe enlists the assistance of her childhood friend, former cop and current PI. At the same time, her meddling may put her at the top of the murderer's list.

What I Thought: I enjoyed this book. I like Phoebe, and the characters are well developed. The light paranormal touch is interesting without overwhelming the story. At the same time, the description of the estate sale/auction and the work around Eudora's house are details that ground the story and characters in reality. The mystery is solid, and there were enough suspects and red herrings to keep me guessing. My one complaint is that there really was no reason for Phoebe to interject herself into the investigation. The police investigator knew her. She was never a serious suspect in anyone's mind but her own. The police are competent, and Phoebe had a major TSTL moment. I stand by my initial statement that I enjoyed the book, but Phoebe needs better reasons to insert herself into future investigations, not to mention better decisions.

Phoebe Winchester has been the proud owner of The Earl's Study, a book and teashop in Ravens Creek, Washington, since the death of her Aunt Eudora, the previous year. She's now getting the hang of most things, although hasn't yet been brave enough to replicate her Aunt’s special blends of tea. Eudora, unbeknownst to most people, was a practising witch as is Phoebe, with both very good at keeping that quiet.

When a nearby house clearance auction is advertised, Phoebe knows she has to go check it out. After finding a fabulous selection of books to bid on, things start to go downhill as she also discovers a dead body. With the police considering her a suspect Phoebe begins her own investigation but, even with the help of longtime friend and local PI, Rich Lofting, she soon finds herself in far greater danger than either of them could have imagined.

Book two in Gretchen Rue's Witches Brew Mystery Series is a fabulous read, and I loved it. There is everything you could want in a cosy crime story, an idyllic setting, new business, an interesting feline friend, and a will they/won't they romance, alongside a main protagonist who is a witch!  All of this is added to a murder mystery, which was fun to unravel and had both likeable and unlikeable potential suspects throughout.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, Crooked Lane Books, but the opinions expressed are my own.  This is a great read that is easy to recommend.

Death by a Thousand Sips the second in the Witches’ Brew series by Gretchen Rue is a delightful and engaging follow-up to the first book. Phoebe, owner of the bookstore/tea shop The Earl’s Study, is sourcing used books at an estate sale when - you guessed it - she discovers a dead body. Phoebe is once again off on an adventure that is filled with intrigue, humor and hints of magic.

This is a mystery filled with clues, suspects and unexpected twists. The author seamlessly weaves together elements of a traditional cozy with a bit of magic and witchcraft in a way that allow readers to lose themselves in the story. The characters are fun, quirky and relatable. (I reviewed an advance reader copy and all opinions are my own.). This is a must-read for anyone who loves charming cozy mysteries with a hint of magic.

I really enjoyed this second book in this series following Phoebe wants again as she runs her store and helps solve a mystery that she was witnessed to. In this book she attends a state sale and with the help of her cat bob comes across the body of the person who is running the estate sale. I have to say I'm very envious of her magical skill because I broke my elbow late Last year and it would have been really handy if I could have stopped that from happening. It's a great cast of characters I really enjoy All of them And seeing her relationships grow with people who are in the town is great. We learned some more about the magic that exist within this realm and it's really cool too. Thank you Net galley for the chance to read this advance copy.

I am loving this series. As a native Washingtonian myself, all the PMW references are super rare and fun for me to read about.
My complaints about this book is that having finished it, I feel like there are several things that didn't get wrapped up and I'm left wondering what's going to happen with them all. Also, I want more magic!! I felt this way with the first book also, expecting this one to be absolutely full of it. I am DYING for Pheobe to explore and use her powers!
I love this series and can't wait for a third book!
