The "Declaration of Interdependence," composed at the 1992 Rio Summit, is both an enlightening creed and a passionate call to action. This compelling statement of environmental principles progresses through three "This We Know," "This We Believe," and "This We Resolve." In this exquisitely designed edition of the Declaration — produced to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of the David Suzuki Foundation — artist Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas brings this powerful creed to life with imagery from cultures around the world, interpreted through his dynamic Haida Manga style. The Declaration is followed by an inspiring essay by David Suzuki. Then, an epilogue by Tara Cullis, president and cofounder of the David Suzuki Foundation, reveals the history and achievements of the foundation, one of North America's most active and successful environmental organizations.
The Declaration of Interdependence is a poem penned by David Suzuki, and the ideas in it span environmentalism and our relationship with our environment. I think the poem was well written and beautifully illustrated.
The other parts consist of an essay written by David Suzuki and an afterword about the David Suzuki Foundation... so I get the impression that this book was really just printed to... increase awareness??? Not sure. The main poem was nice but I think it would have made a great poster (Note to self: buy poster).
A beautifully illustrated summary of the environmental issues facing the world today and a vision for the future of what we can do as human beings to preserve our planet.
A poetic creed grounding all living entities in a responsibility for the whole, a collective interdependence.
“At this turning point in our relationship with Earth, we work for an evolution: from dominance to partnership; from fragmentation to connection; from insecurity to interdependence”
Well that was an incredibly short read. Such an important and thought provoking piece reminding us of our place within the whole of the earth. I would recommend that anyone read this and think about what it has to say.
