Tony Buzan was an English author, educational consultant, and pioneer of the mind mapping technique, which he developed to enhance learning, creativity, and memory. Born in Middlesex in 1942, he studied psychology, English, mathematics, and science at the University of British Columbia and later became a graduate student at Simon Fraser University, where he served as the inaugural president of the student society. Buzan was a strong advocate for mental literacy and radiant thinking, drawing inspiration from figures like Leonardo da Vinci and Albert Einstein. He authored or co-authored over 80 books, including the bestselling Use Your Head, The Mind Map Book, and The Speed Reading Book, and gained international recognition through his 1970s BBC series Use Your Head. Buzan co-founded the World Memory Championships, the Mind Sports Olympiad, and the Brain Trust Charity. His legacy lives on through his books, seminars, and iMindMap software.
Tony Buzan became famous after he popularised the mind mapping technique. His spider diagram method is very effective, and it helped me a lot while studying in Medical school. This book will introduce you to his advanced memory techniques to learn and remember more.
So here's what all this book is about: 1- Change numbers to words 2- Use loci or memory palace. Which non is Buzan's invention. All the rest of the book is random list you can make yourself or find on the Internet, apparently Buzan used them just to fill another book. If you are interested in developing your memory I recommend Joshua Foer's Moonwalking with Einstein
'Use your head' is a brief introductory book which explores the possibility of unlocking brains immense potential. 'Use Your Memory' digs deeper by discussing various memory enhancing techniques with examples.
Is it helpful? Definitely. It gives you the basic principles and you can take it forward, modify for your suitability and use them like a pro. It definitely shares knowledge which is worth knowing.
Later half of the chapter discusses the application of the learned techniques in some of the common scenarios (you can skip a few chapter here if you want). Also practicing these techniques is important, more you incorporate these in your daily life more comfortable and fluent you'll get with them and will come natural to you.
I read the Arabic edition of this book. The book is great. However, it doesn't have sufficient exercises. It concentrates on theory and leaves the practice to you. It is divided into three main parts. The first part is a little history and definition and some other basics. The second part is the core and has a detailed explanation of the systems used to memorize things. The last part is a little interactive and talks about applying what you learned to some common problems you face in life like remembering people's names and faces...etc. If you need to really get the real benifit of this book you need to practice all the concepts introduced and don't move to the next one unless you master the previous one. This way, you'll get the most out of it.
In my opinion the first and the last part of the book is what really matters. Although you need the second part in order to master some of the concepts in the last part, but I think you'll enjoy the first part the most, especially if this is your first memory book.
Okay... I will admit I didn't completely read this book... I just wanted to get it off my "currently reading" shelf.
I've read Buzan's books before and I would suggest any or all of them. They are practical and useful. This book specifically teaches memory techniques for multiple situations. There is a diagnosis test, worksheet-like pages and chapter tests. I would suggest buying this book new and in actual book format (NOT on Kindle or an iPad) since there is a lot of fill-in-the-blank exercises. I did not complete the book since I don't have a need for memory techniques right now. However, I will keep it as a reference if I do need it. It is a book that lets you pick and choose which chapters to wish to read or use, and the author himself makes that suggestion in the forward. My only regret is that I wish I would have been introduced to Tony Buzan's work earlier in my life when I was a student. This is a great read for any teacher, student or parent.
The book contains a lot of memory tricks that help to improve your memory. This is my second copy as I put the first down and forgot where. I've had this copy for two years now, so it worked ;)
E adesso come faccio? ==========
My summary : To remember anything but it in exaggeration story , be mindful about it and connect it with your positive memories and peg words like one word containing the first letter of words u want to remember and also mind maps.
———— Left cortex in brain is associated with logic ,words ,sequencing, list but right cortex association rhythm, color, dimensions, daydreaming, spatial awareness and Gestalt (the whole picture), use all your senses and emotions to recall information,1-synesthesia, or the blending of the senses. In developing better memory, it’s important to sensitize and regularly train all your senses, including vision, hearing, smell, taste, touch and kinaesthesia (your awareness of position and movement in space).2-positive images. The brain naturally wants to recall pleasant memories, so do your best to attach positive or inspiring associations to the things you want to remember. 3-exaggeration | The link system will help you remember short lists of items , the more unexpected and abstract the links, the better you’ll remember them| Peg memory systems are useful for short sequences. A peg is a fixed key memory word, which is used to link items| The Roman room system allows you to remember an indefinite number of items, like story | Mind maps , Mind maps increase your memory by simultaneously engaging both brain hemispheres.
Blinks: 1. Your memory is inherently powerful. Your brain stores tons of information, but you just need the right trigger to bring it up. You have infinite amount of storage. 2. Mnemonics are simple methods that ensure excellent memory. They refer to any technique designed to help you remember anything. 3. The most important mnemonics use all your senses and emotions to recall information. Try to exaggerate all the senses when trying to remember anything. 4. The link system will help you remember short lists of items. If you have a shopping list, try to link the entire list with a story that weaves everything together. 5. Peg memory systems are useful for short sequences. If you need to remember a recipe, use the numbers as pegs that match an ingredient in the recipe. 6. The Roman room system allows you to remember an indefinite number of items. Create a room that has all the things you want to store. 7. Mind maps are a useful device for not forgetting your notes.
Read it on Blinkist - I liked several types of memory tricks but the effort of remembering the Roman rooms technique seems like more work than just remembering. Perhaps once rooms are remembered it become easier.
