About the author

Euclid (Ancient Greek: Εὐκλείδης Eukleidēs -- "Good Glory", ca. 365-275 BC) also known as Euclid of Alexandria, was a Greek mathematician, often referred to as the "Father of Geometry". He was active in Alexandria during the reign of Ptolemy I (323–283 BC). His Stoicheia (Elements) is a 13-volume exploration all corners of mathematics, based on the works of, inter alia, Aristotle, Eudoxus of Cnidus, Plato, Pythagoras. It is one of the most influential works in the history of mathematics, presenting the mathematical theorems and problems with great clarity, and showing their solutions concisely and logically. Thus, it came to serve as the main textbook for teaching mathematics (especially geometry) from the time of its publication until the late 19th or early 20th century. In the Elements, Euclid deduced the principles of what is now called Euclidean geometry from a small set of axioms. Euclid also wrote works on perspective, conic sections, spherical geometry, number theory and rigor. He is sometimes credited with one original theory, a method of exhaustion through which the area of a circle and volume of a sphere can be calculated, but he left a much greater mark as a teacher.

Ова књига је савршенство. Заправо, дупло савршенство. Али је истовремено и једна трећина савршенства. Из чега би неко могао да закључи да је ова књига заправо 2/3 савршенства, али то не би било тачно, јер она је двоструко савршенство. Као и 1/3 савршенства. Али назирем да сад већ почињемо да се вртимо укруг, па ћемо да брејкнемо ову петљу и скочимо на сљедећи пасус.

Дакле, зашто је ова књига савршенство? Уопште нема потребе да се бавимо утицајем Елемената на развој свеколике данашње науке. Такође нема потребе да наглашавамо, мада ћемо ипак нагласити, да је ово уз Библију вјероватно најважнија књига коју је човјечанство написало. То је све лијепо, али није пресудно. Оно што јесте пресудно јесте управо сама чињеница је ово оригинално излагање еуклидске геометрије, која је једна од најљепших ствари на свијету. Постоје многе лијепе ствари на свијету, а међу њима свакако најљепша је лијепа жена. Лијепа жена је љепша чак и од лијепе сарме од раштике са павлаком. Али ако постоји нешто што по љепоти може да се приближи лијепој жени, то је ван сваке сумње еуклидска геометрија.

Нажалост, као што сте примијетили, овде сам приморан да наводим ову квалификацију "еуклидска", а разлог томе је што су у посљедњих неколико стотина година (а нарочито почевши од почетка 20. вијека, кад су открили ону некакву теорију релативности) тзв. нееуклидске геометрије постале много популарне, што је заиста несрећан сплет околности, јер је то обично глупирање и пресипање из шупљег у празно. Тј., да будем прецизан, све то лијепо може да се сведе на ствари које већ постоје у еуклидској геометрији, али је формулисано тако да буде ружно, одбојно и да се сваком иоле пристојном човјеку диже коса на глави. Не кажем да су нееуклидске геометрије ружне као нпр. теорија мјере и интеграције или функционална анализа, али нису ни далеко од тога. "Кроз сваку тачку ван праве пролази бесконачно много различитих правих које се не сијеку са том правом" и гомилу сличних неподопштина чућете од заговорника нееуклидских геометрија, нарочито од теоретских физичара и других који се баве практичним примјенама те несретне теорије (тј. теорија, пошто их, авај, има више), а то све се једноставно објашњава тиме што под правом они не подразумијевају праву праву већ нешто сасвим десето. Прц.

У сваком случају, дакле, еуклидска геометрија (тј. ако мене питате једино што има право уопште да се зове геометријом, мада ме вјероватно не питате) је лијепа сама по себи, а нарочито лијепо је то изложено у овој књизи. Кад кренете од дефиниција и оних неколико основних аксиома и постулата и онда гледате како вам из пропозиције у пропозицију пред очима ничу разноразни троуглови, квадрати и други паралелограми, па затим кругови и сл., како се развијају и објашњавају њихови односи и особине, па то је буквално као да посматрате рађање и развој неког комплетног организма. Има тога наравно и у другим дисциплинама, али ова књига је све то започела, а осим тога друге дисциплине су много ружније од еуклидске геометрије (изузимајући донекле апстрактну алгебру).

Најочигледнији примјер савршенства и љепоте ове књиге смјештен је на сами крај прве књиге, у маестралном доказу Питагорине теореме у коме је некако кликнуло и посложило се свих претходних 46 пропозиција те књиге. Нажалост, ову мисао не могу да развијем, јер то излази из оквира једног обичног ривјуа књиге.

Други разлог зашто је ова књига савршенство не односи се на саму књигу већ на издање (што ће рећи да сам починио гријех еквивокације или како ли се већ зове оно кад исту ријеч користите за двије различите ствари). Наиме, Томас Хит, енглески лорд и мастер старогрчке математике, тако је ревносно приступио свом послу да се то ријетко виђа било гдје. Књига садржи обиман предговор (150 страна!) са разноразним детаљима што о самом Еуклиду, што о његовим сљедбеницима и преводиоцима, разноразним различитим преводима књиге, уметањима, избацивањима и сл., а онда и обимну (прилично филозофску) расправу о значењима појмова који се користе у књизи, као што су "дефиниција", "аксиома", "постулат" и сл. А то је тек почетак. Буквално свака дефиниција, аксиом, пропозиција и остало детаљно су искоментарисани (при чему коментари некад иду и на по неколико страна), на многим мјестима наведени алтернативни докази и сл., најкраће речено - по мојој слободној процјени, Еуклидовог текста овде има неких 20%, док је остало дјело Томаса Хита. Књига је опскрбљена свиме што је потребно да би се Елементи разумјели и смјестили у данашњи контекст (иако је стара преко сто година!). Наравно, у свакој књизи мора да буде понеки недостатак или грешка, па тако и у Елементима (што не умањује чињеницу да је у питању савршенство, а ако мислите да је то контрадикција, можете да скочите у језеро) и све је то лијепо објашњено овде, али уз дужно поштовање према генијалном аутору књиге, а не као неке тамо модерне будале (као нпр. Леонард Млодинов) које се усуђују да критикују дјело и човјека коме нису достојни обућу да понесу.

Једна малецка илустрација Еуклидове генијалности, коју математичари могу да прескоче пошто већ знају (наиме, пети постулат). Дакле, међу постулатима у првој књизи налази се инфамозни Пети Постулат, који каже отприлике сљедеће: Ако права линија сијече друге двије праве линије тако да је збир унутрашњих углова са једне њене стране мањи од два права угла (тј. од 180 степени), онда се двије праве линије, ако се продуже довољно, сијеку на тој страни на којој је збир унутрашњих углова мањи од два права угла. Ово звучи много компликовано, али значајно губи на компликованости ако се нацрта на папиру. У сваком случају, математичари који су услиједи послије Еуклида сматрали су да нема теорије да ово може да се сматра постулатом (јер постулат је нешто што се узима без доказа као полазна претпоставка, слично аксиоми), већ да може да се докаже уз помоћ осталих постулата. Те су то и покушали. И нису успјели. Па су онда покушали опет. И опет нису успјели. Па су покушали опет. И тако је то трајало цирка двије хиљаде година док коначно нису сконтали да им је посао узалудан, тј. да је пети постулат стварно постулат а не теорема. Нажалост, о истом трошку су креирали нееуклидску геометрију :-(

Коначно, разлог зашто је ово само једна трећина савршенства је што је у питању тек први од три тома комплетног издања. У овом првом тому налазе се само двије Еуклидове књиге, због обимног предговора који сам раније споменуо.

Иако сам иначе врло задовољан својим студијем, сматрам да је велики недостатак наших професора што не само да нас нису тјерали да читамо класичне књиге које су писали сами велики математичари (не мислим за оцјену, већ онако нешто као лектира или сл.), већ нам нису ни скренули пажњу на њих или препоручили да их прочитамо. Али ако погледате биографије великих математичара (а исто вјероватно важи и за велике научнике у било којој науци), видјећете да су се они служили углавном оригиналним дјелима. Један од њих (убијте ме, али не могу да се сјетим ко, можда Галоа или Абел) је рекао, отприлике, "не желим да учим од ученика већ од учитеља". Све у свему, било који математичар једноставно нема апсолутно никакво оправдање за непосједовање ове књиге у својој библиотеци, осим наравно ако је љубитељ геометрије Лобачевског или функционалне анализе или тако некакве абоминације. Без увреде.

Segundo Aristóteles a matemática surgiu com a tentativa dos antigos egípcios de resolver problemas práticos. Os primeiros registros arqueológicos indicam a existência universal do uso de números para registro e comércio mas somente com os gregos esse estudo se tornou sistemático e científico. A distribuição de Pareto, a proporção áurea e as fórmulas de Leonhardt Euler fazem parecer que os matemáticos decalcam suas normas, abstraindo-as diretamente da natureza. Uma verdade parcial. Aqui no ocidente o estudo dos Elementos de Euclides há milênios educou gerações de matemáticos cuja reflexão sobre o texto é a fundação dessa ciência. A presente edição, traduzida e comentada por Sir Thomas L. Heath não esconde o que há de histórico, lógico, filológico, filosófico e científico por trás da abstração final.

Com um preâmbulo que perfaz metade do primeiro volume, onde são discutidos os outros trabalhos de Euclides, a filologia do texto, os comentaristas gregos e Proclus(o mais famoso) e a geometria euclidiana no mundo árabe; somos contextualizados com os temas que serão minuciados em cada axioma, postulado e proposição. Na Proposição 2, por exemplo, "to place at a given point (as an extremity) a straight line equal to a given straight line", somos introduzidos ao método da casuística matemática onde os comentaristas se assemelham mais a jurisconsultos ou escolásticos que a geômetras. Já no Postulado 4, "that all right angles are equal to one another", entramos na seara da matemática avançada onde não apenas as figuras mas até o espaço mudam e as linhas não se cruzam sem se tomar por subentendido os princípios da continuidade, imutabilidade das figuras e homogeneidade do espaço. Há nesses comentários, onde cabível, uma profusão de discussões e provas paralelas, complementares e posteriores de matemáticos desde as fontes pré-euclidianas, passando pelo primarismo escolástico, desenvolvimento moderno e reformulação pela geometria contemporânea.

Também à linguagem dirige-se atenção: mudanças etimológicas importantes como a dos termos gregos para "ponto", por exemplo. Conjectura-se que por influência platônica o termo στιγμή (donde estigma, originalmente uma mancha na penugem das aves), usado por Aristóteles e geômetras anteriores, foi substituído por σημεῖον (sinal, signo) que Euclides, Arquimedes e outros tardios usaram.

Nunca me deti na razão das construções frasais dos enunciados matemáticos: "suponha...", "uma linha é descrita...", "seja um triângulo de dimensões..." etc. Frases construídas em grego no imperativo perfeito passivo na terceira pessoa do singular ou plural. Não é preciso dizer que a força da expressão é quase impossível de traduzir. Veja, para aduzir um caso, o imperativo passivo do indicativo na terceira pessoa do singular de "santificado seja o teu nome" da oração do Pai Nosso, ἁγιασθήτω τò ὄνομά σου. É notável o elegante e quase universal uso dessa construção em Euclides: κύκλος γεγράφθω ὁ ΒΓΔ"seja desenhado(descrito) o círculo, aquele BCD; ἐπεζευχθώσαν εὐθεῖαι αἱ ΓΑ, ΓΒ "unam-se as linhas retas, as CA e CB".

Para aumentar a minha satisfação, como estudante também de grego, a própria tradução é comentada. Porque sem as figuras os enunciados muitas vezes são de difícil compreensão, não apenas por que da existência de termos intraduzíveis mas principalmente dada a aparente obscuridade do texto. Ao pé da letra a Proposição 7 traduzir-se-ia:

"On the same straight line there shall not be constructed two other straight lines terminating at different points on the same side, having the same extremities as the original straight lines."

A linguagem elítica e vaga, embora confundisse o comum dos gregos, bem como nos confunde hoje, era a fraseologia tradicional dos geômetras, presente em textos como os de Aristóteles e Apollonius. Por uma questão de clareza a tradução insere novas palavras quando necessário:

"Given two straight lines constructed on a straight line(from its extremities) and meeting in a point, there cannot be constructed on the same straight line(from its extremities), and on the same side of it, two other straight lines meeting in another point and equal to that which has the same extremities with it"

Estou particularmente fascinado pelos comentários dessa edição, mas àqueles que querem uma edição enxuta dessas notas, mesmo com prejuízo da proximidade com o grego, mas sem perder a clareza, podem contar com o trabalho de Simson,(mais propriamente uma paráfrase, digo sem demérito) que traduz:

"Upon the same base, and on the same side of it, there cannot be two triangles that have their sides which are terminated in one extremity of the base equal to one another, and likewise those which are terminated at the other extremity."

A nata, a meu ver, é o trabalho filosófico/científico em cada passo dos Elementos. A exposição dos axiomas como os "primeiros princípios" aristotélicos e sua distinção dos postulados e noções comuns. Também o detimento com que é avaliada a propriedade lógica de cada definição, bem como a discussão de definições paralelas e respectivas propriedades. A abordagem de temas polêmicos como o status categórico dos ângulos, os "Grenzbegriffen" (ponto, linha, plano e ângulo de 90°) e a influência da filosofia platônica no esboço geral da obra é feita sempre com ousadia e clareza.

Enfim, obra é maximamente recomendável a todos que buscam uma ferramenta perfeita ao aprendizado completo das artes liberais.

How does one give Euclid anything less than five stars? Truth be told, I've put this aside for awhile. Not having the time to read the Elements other than now and then, I found it increasingly more difficult to follow the proofs in the later books because I was not remembering the proofs in the earlier books upon which the later proofs rely. But as I would say to Euclid if he were here, "It's me, not you." I'm looking forward to taking this up again from the beginning when my schedule permits reading it more frequently.

A book of some of the basic, but important mathematical propositions of Euclid. The formatting for the edition I read could have been a lot better though. Having all of the pure text in the beginning would have been better. The associated notes like the biography of Euclid or the explanations of the propositions afterwards would have been easier to read, which is what a lot of translations for older books do.

While the commentary throughout exhibits some fantastic insights, the curious reader may find themselves less interested in the simplicity put forth by Euclid and more focused on dissecting the extensive tangents of Mr. Heath. Regardless, the general content is still very much in tact and solely focusing on it will no doubt reveal much to any reader of any mathematical background.

I actually only read the first book which was long enough! The whole book was just logically proving propositions and math equations. It mostly deals with the complexities of triangles and takes you from basic math all the way up to parallelograms. It took me two months to get through it because the language is a little difficult to understand and it's math for goodness sakes!

The Elements is a very dense text about the vagaries of the history of Euclidian geometry. I was initially under the impression that this would be an in depth treatment of the math itself, but it's much more of an historic and almost philosophical account of how The Elements were assembled.

Much of the deconstruction is very interesting as it compares myriad definitions of the very basics of geometry. For example, a source believed to be Euclid said a line is made up of a collection of infinitely many points that extends to infinity while Appolonius said it is the path traced by a single point moving in one dimension.

It's very interesting to see the train of thought but it's not as mathematically enlightening as I thought it would be. My hope was that The Elements would be a sort of skeleton key to the fundamentals of geometry — some bedrock to reinforce my understanding of everything Euclidian. Well, it hasn't been quite that, but it's fun none the less.

Euclid's influence is both unfortunate and undeserved. While much of what he puts forth in this book has been regarded as crucial to the creation of modern mathematics, in truth it is a poor substitute for the Conics of Apollonius and the works of Archimedes. At best this book is like a pistol--it has a few uses, but should always be respected as somewhat dangerous, and kept away from children if possible.

It is important to note that mathematical rigor is not the same thing as truth. Though Euclid excelled in the former, many of his ideas can safely be abandoned to pursue the latter.

I read half of this book simply to teach myself how to follow an air-tight deductive argument (and believe me, I'm still learning). Math isn't my strongest subject, but I was genuinely astounded when I read the first proof (an equilateral triangle); I just sat there staring at the pages wondering how this man just proved the thing exactly as he intended. For my simple mind it was deceptively simple yet profound. 99% of people will be bored by this book, and even I dropped it after a while, but it was foundational at the point in my self-education when I needed it.

Heath's notes are extensive and excellent. In the notes to any given definition or proposition, he gives the whole range of commentary and mathematical development from ancient to modern (and not just western commentaries either). And most importantly, he gives both the Greek and the English, including the Greek of the commentators!

In many ways, this is the perfect book: affordable, extensive and useful scholarly apparatus, original language alongside decent translation, readable fonts, and helpful diagrams. I need to get the other volumes.

Although I do not personally enjoy geometrical proofs, I thought it was fascinating to know how Euclid has influenced Western Civilization. All of those philosophers who based their thought solely on reason were wholly influenced by Euclid's concept of proving something only if it is 100% certain. Even for someone who does not truly enjoy geometry, Euclid is an important read because of his tremendous influence on Western civilization.

This is the book that made me fall in love with mathematics. If this was what was taught in schools, our education system would be all the better for it.
