I had the opportunity to visit with a friend and check out a few boxes of children's books she had kept from her childhood and her son's. The books are quite old and many are out of print, so it was a wonderful chance to revisit with some stories I read when I was young and to discover others I'd never seen before.
A counting book about a duckling who wanders from home trying to find someone who will walk with him. After a long search through some classic farm animals, he finally finds his family... ducks who want to walk, too! Great illustrations and a good introduction to counting and farm animals for toddlers.
I remember my sis and I had a copy of this book, so I know I've read it (probably a couple hundred times), but I'll be damned if I can remember a single thing about the plot or main character. This one was not a favorite.
I expected more from this book; I just think the story could have been better. Fuzzy duckling meets different animals (in numerical order - ex: 4 noisy turkeys, 5 white geese), but no one will walk with him. Finally he finds his family and falls in line with the other ducklings.
Review: I rate it 5 stars because of its educational value.
Summary: the fuzzy duckling goes on a walk straying from his family, he comes upon different animals throughout his walk asking if they want to walk with him. A pig then say you might want to get home because it's supper time. The duckling finds himself lost until his mother and other siblings pop out behind a bush. he get in line with all the others and they go home together to have supper.
Although it's a small book, it has counting number, different animals, and the pictures are very detailed in each page.
I read this book over and over every night to my oldest son. To this day, I can still recite the story by memory. I now have 2 copies waiting for when my sons have children of their own
This may possibly have been the first book I read on my own at the end of first grade, when I realized I could read on my own. After that I never stopped.
This book in a new paperback would cost $53.93, if used paperback it would cost $0.01. if you buy a new Board book it would cost $0.14, if used Board book it would cost $0.01. On Amazon.
3* writing - the sentences do not flow as well as they could, however the pictures are lovely and the story is perfect for my 18 month old. He likes it quite a lot.
“The Fuzzy Duckling” by Jane Werner Watson (Little Golden Books) Sweet story about how “... no one would come for a walk with the fuzzy duckling. So on he went, all by his lone.” - - -
I’ll start by saying that the reason I rated this book a 4/5 stars instead of 2-3/5 is because of the beautiful illustrations all throughout. I chose this book as an example of a counting picture book and while the story did count 1-10, I found the rest of the plot to be a little boring. This fuzzy duckling goes out for a walk and asks the various farm animals he passes along the way if they’d like to walk with him, to which all these animals decline. Eventually, he comes across 8 pigs who tell him he’d better go home soon for supper time. For a moment, the fuzzy duckling becomes lost and cannot find his way home until the mother duck with her 9 other ducklings find him. They then return home for supper and the fuzzy duckling remarks that this is the best way to go for a walk— with his family. As I mentioned before, the illustrations in this book are beautifully done in what I believe is water color paint possibly. These illustrations enhance the book even more than the story does in my opinion. The colorful and soft appearing animals draw the reader (and I could imagine the little listeners too) into the book and make the story more engaging to read/listen to. I just wish the plot were more creative or unpredictable. Not a bad book, just not a great one either in my opinion.
A lot of little Golden books haven't aged well, but this one about a little ducky who goes out on an adventure is truly a classic. So many fun things to see, and at the end of the day, one mama duck patiently waiting.
this is a cute children’s picture book about a little duckling who tries to find other animals friends to go on a walk with him but then ends up getting lost on his way home.
