The book is written by 22 MVP, each one of them wrote a chapter. So you don't have to expect fixed standard of writing quality through all chapters.
Some chapters were very solid and useful like the first chapter that was talking about the how to set your environment for the new SharePoint 2010. I loved it because it is one-stop complete reference for every thing about the setup process.
Chapter 18 about the branding was very informative and helpful. Yet it was lacking for many details and leaved me searching for other resource. It was just mind-opening chapter about concept, but not a comprehensive resource.
Eventually, I would recommend this book if you really wanna to read the experience of most valuable people. Only be warned that it is not a complete resource for all topics in SharePoint 2010.

The book skimmed over too much material and too often familiar with the topic. Would have rather seen less topics and more depth or more tips that I can't find on MSDN.

Pretty good prose, easily digested, well apart from the STS (Security Token Service) - oh my god I need a brain transplant to understand that chapter!
