This book started out strong with the various archetypes. But once that section was over the book descended into a clichéd and generic self-help book that did little more than peddle all of the online classes and products the author sells on her site.
My husband challenged me to read this book because I too often stay within my genre comfort zone. So I used my hard-earned Amazon rewards points to purchase this book. I even took the time to listen to some of her podcast episodes (with the same name) and took the assessment test.
The assessment test proved to be spot on for me. It even addressed some of my struggles about wanting to write again. She nailed it…I’m a procrastinating rule follower who wants to please people…which basically means that I dream up all kinds of fabulous ideas and then freeze up.
I appreciated Part 1 of the book (the first 7 chapters) which gave insight on the fear archetypes. Reading them caused me to change up a habit or two and implement a bit of her advice. However, being completely honest, I was not blown away with anything she had to say. I’ve read a lot on personality types and she pretty much reiterated what I already knew about myself.
I moved onto Part 2 and Part 3 and that’s where I broke up with this book. Please don’t send me DM’s trying to change my mind. I’ll be brief and just mention a few of my concerns. It’s a book telling you how you can do it. It’s motivational and inspirational and makes you just want to get up and DO IT NOW! Scared or not! But when you start taking the book thought for thought, that is when my Bible filter kicks in and gets all gunky.
Are big goals nice? Sure! But we don’t NEED them, we need Jesus. Sometimes we don’t do the big things because God keeps the door shut, not because we don’t have the right plans or kind of goals. Sure it’s fun to dream big…but what about God’s plans? Do our plans line up with His, or are we just marching our own little bossy way forward? And when you or I are feeling purposeless, it’s not a sign of needing dreams and big plans…it’s a red flag that our eyes are off of Jesus Christ. I could go on. And on. But I think you get my point.
I know this book has great appeal and intrigue. But instead of dreaming big, let us delight in the Lord together and He will place His plans for our lives on our hearts and minds. He is good. Follow Him and He will show you great and mighty works! They may not always look fantastic to us...but that’s a whole other post!
Instead of reading #DoItScared I suggest reading #Flourish or #Awe or #FreshWindFreshFire for starters.
I honestly didn’t know what to expect from this book, but it was so good! One of my favorite business books I’ve read in a long time. The fear personalities at the beginning was so so helpful for me!!
3.5! Loved the first section about fear archetypes. I'm such a personality junkie I loved how fears have a "personality" too. She did a great job diving into fear types and what it is that makes leaving our comfort zone so hard. Great steps to take to overcome fears. The second part of the book was motivational speaking, and success stories, and blah blah blah. 😄
I know everyone says there are no new motivational/self-help books but geez, this book was 50% other people’s ideas (far better stated in the books in which they originally appeared) and 50% the author’s “inspiring” story and advertising for her many products and services for sale. And don’t get me started on the white privilege in all the books like this that posit, “just don’t be afraid and keep going and you can have absolutely everything you want, no one and nothing can stand in your way!” Truly disappointing read.
So, I was a little not in the mood? for the tone of this audiobook as I was in a really black place when it started, but, damnit if it didn't help. I've done the online assessment and I really do think there's a lot here to absorb that's above and beyond the standard self-help book, so, I'll be moving it to my shelf of the best ones I've read so far.
I actually really enjoyed this book more than I thought I was. This book was a gift from my mom, and when I initially saw it, it wasn’t the kind of book I’d pick up for myself. However the way she explains the fear types and ways to get passed fear, it made so much sense. If you want a good book about dealing with different types of fear then this is the book for you.
I enjoyed the first part of this book explaining the different fear archetypes. The second part of the book was pretty inspiring and feel goody.. but it didn’t resonate with me that much. I couldn’t put my finger on why but some parts felt a just tiny bit privileged.. or the tone just didn’t sit 100% with me! Still listened to the whole thing though! I would rate it a 2.5 if we could give half stars!
I’m not an avid reader of self help books but I enjoy this author’s podcast & thought I may enjoy the book. I picked up the audible version & thought overall it was a bit generic. 3 stars.
"I have loved every thing I have encountered from Ruth Soukup and was excited to see what wisdom I could glean from her newest book. I was a bit skeptical since I did not think fear was holding me back from doing anything. Boy, was I surprised when my fear archetype was revealed and when I stopped to think about it, it was totally right on. There are elements of fear that prevent me from taking action.
What I loved the most was that not only does this book help you identify your fear archetype and explain both the positive and negatives aspects of it, it gives you action steps to help reach toward your goals anyway. Do It Scared.
I have been through some challenges in my life and have spent the past six years doing a lot of focus and research on the idea of gratitude and the positive impact it has on your life I was thrilled to see the importance of practicing gratitude recognized and encouraged in this book.
Some of my favorite quotes:
""Action is the antidote to fear."" ""The best part about practicing gratitude? It leads to instant happiness."" ""Creating a life you love starts with appreciating the life you have."" ""The secret to success . . is that as long as you keep taking small steps in one direction, you'll get there eventually"" ""Just as courage is a muscle that gets stronger every time you exercise it, so it is with gratitude""
No matter what you are facing in your everyday life, no matter how big or small you consider your goal, this book is a must read. It helped me identify positive action steps I can take toward reaching my goals and offers encouragement along the way.
I only read the first chapter--"the archetypes" and that's it. That's the only good thing about this book. It's too basic. What set me off is the non stop promotion of the authors website. For example: you need to answer a test from her website that would be able to acquire your email address and automatically added you to her email list. This should be an Ebook then.
This book have all the recipe of what I do not like in a book. I'm not really a fan of self help books who talks about the author's story a looottt. It's all "I" than "you" as a reader. Plus the nonstop mention of "working moms" in EVERY CHAPTER!
If you are a beginner and a mother then I guess this book is for you. However if you are an advance reader and you want more, then look for another book (psychology books, Jim Rohn books or any more notable authors).
From the on-line quiz to the final page, this book is both character-revealing and motivating. First, you take a quiz that identifies your fear archetype(s). Then inside the book you read the chapter that explains how that fear might manifest (this can be surprising), the possible benefits of this fear, and the possible ways it is holding you back. Finally, Soukup gives strategies to overcome the fear. The final two parts are action steps and mindset you need to meet your big, scary goals. For stories of real people doing it scared, check out her podcast too.
I really enjoyed this book and gleaned a lot of information about myself. I recognize a lot of patterns and can relate to being a rule follower. I will definitely keep this book on my bookshelf to reference often.
Lots of takeaways. I learned my fear archetype (People Pleaser) and ways to dream big and find the courage to achieve my dreams. It'll be a challenge for sure but I'm willing to do it...scared. :)
An okay self help book. Some good ideas and thoughts on overcoming fear/reluctance on completing various things. I don’t think anyone has solved the dilemma on how do you motivate someone or oneself to achieve something. The book like other self help books does provide some ideas for everyone on how to overcome challenges on completing things.
Audiobook: love the energy of this book! I have always been a “play it safe, follow the rules” kind of person. This makes me believe if I have a good idea - go for it!
Started out a little slow for me, but after getting past the ins and outs of the fear types I found it really motivating! Excited to try some of the things she talked about!
Do It Scared by Ruth Soukup is an amazing playbook of how fear is entangled in our everyday thoughts and life. It is a heartfelt look into the life of a successful business woman who is bearing all her fears and failures for us so we can learn beside her how to overcome them. Through years of research she developed Fear Archetypes and an assessment that allows you to truly see how your own fears could be holding you back. I didn't want to believe it, but she was right...I'm a rule follower. After reading this, I could see how this has held me back in the past. Now, I'm aware and can make better decisions. This is more than just a book, this is a program in itself prompting you to achieve the best you that can be. People Do It Scared, but do it! This book will help its readers achieve their wildest dreams and aspirations, even in their fear.
Long story short, nebiju sajūsmā.
That being said, pāris atziņas izvilku, tādēļ gluži 1 zvaigzni nelieku.
A few pages in, I wasn't sure I was going to like this book, but let me just say: push on! It has really helped motivate me to re-evaluate my goals for the coming years, and I am not someone who is prone to making vision boards or the like. But the message of the book is both so simple and yet profound: figure out what you want, and just do it. Keep doing it. And every step actually does bring you closer to the life you want. It sounds so, well, self-evident, but so often my days are spent on the urgent tasks, not the important ones that will move life in epically-cool new directions. And so maybe that's more what my take away was: we need to focus on what is important, even if that means that all of the to-do lists tasks don't happen.
The book itself is broken into three chunks, and the first focuses on personality archetypes, and while they were accurate descriptions of personalities, I've read enough other books that I didn't need these chapters, nor did the section feel like it actually fit in with the rest of the book. But then again, I am a sucker for thinking about personalities, and so it was still fun enough to read. Although the push to take a personality test on her website did give the section an overly sales-pitchy-y feel.
BUT I kept reading on, because I really liked Ruth Soukup's other book, Living Well, Spending Less: 12 Secrets of the Good Life, and so figured it was worth pressing on. And after the first section, the book becomes so great! Sure, in some ways it is just another motivational book about how to create a life you love, but at the same time, the way that she talks about how our thought patterns and actions intersect and can be tweaked is brilliant. It is written with a great mix of insight and humor.
The take-aways I liked the most were her call to think about where we place the locus of control of our life and that the more we foster an internal locus, and take responsibility for all of the things that happen in our lives (whether it is something we caused or can control or not), we can move forward in strength. I also sort of thought her distaste for SMART goals was funny - and she does have a point!
Overall, if you are looking for a book to reinvigorate you and make you think about setting big goals for your life, I'd highly recommend this book.
Do It Scared, the latest book from Ruth Soukup, is a must read for anyone who has ever felt stuck in life, unable or unwilling to step out of their comfort zones in order to reach goals or find purpose. It is both practical and inspiring. The first part of the book dives deep into what Ruth calls The 7 Fear Archetypes, identifying what it is that may hold people back: The Procrastinator, The Rule Follower, The People Pleaser, The Outcast, The Self-Doubter, The Excuse Maker, and The Pessimist. (I'm a procrastinating outcast...spot on.) After using the tools to identify your archetype and reading in depth about them, part two of the book shows the reader how, once understanding what about your personality may have been holding you back, you can learn seven principles of courage to overcome it. Part two talks of the practical importance of dreaming big ("...most of the time, we're so caught up in the experience of our current reality that we have a hard time imagining anything different...In our mind, our current reality is our only reality."), as well as how to create action plans to dreaming big, and, another favorite of mind, putting blinders on. That dreaming big and accomplishing our goals takes hard work , and sacrifice, and that sometimes the blinders have to go on to achieve that goal or big dream. Finally, the third part of the book shows how to combine the two and put courage into action with your archetype to achieve goals. Part three is filled with things such as creating an action plan, the downside to comparison, and my favorite, forming your own truth club; that is finding people to be accountable to. That it is necessary to find these people who can hold you accountable and that you are willing to be vulnerable with, and hear truth from. I can not recommend this book enough, along with Do It Scared community where you can find weekly encouragement, exercises and your own truth club in helping you to dream big and accomplish big goals by doing it scared. *I received a copy of this book from the publisher to review. All opinions are my own.*
For years, I could never understand why I struggled to move forward on work projects and personal tasks. Personally, I felt that I just needed to stop procrastinating and be better organized. Even knowing the benefits of completing those tasks could result in better income and less stress, I continued to struggle.
That was until I read Ruth Soukup’s Do It Scared and completed the Do It Scared Fear Assessment. My fear assessment was incredibly spot on accurate. It was fascinating to read about the different archetypes and their descriptions and how to overcome them. It was like she was talking directly to me, using examples for which I have done repeatedly over the years. The book is fabulous, well written, and an easy read.
Do It Scared is divided into three (3) segments: 1) delves into the Seven fear archetypes, the habits and behaviors and strategies to overcome the fear. 2) Principles of Courage focuses on changing your mind-set and letting go of limiting beliefs. 3) Action Planning provide steps to dream big and established a balanced plan to achieve your goals.
As an entrepreneur, this book has been a game changer for me. Since Identifying and understanding my top three (3) fear archetypes, I now understand why I have struggled in the past, but also have put actions in place to overcome them. Since implementation, my productivity has increased significantly, I am so much more focused, and I am getting thing done. My big goals are now on track and I look forward to achieving them and setting up my next big goal!
I have followed Ruth Soukup over the last few years reading her books, taking many of her courses, and purchased (and a huge fan of) her LWSL Planner. I find Ruth Soukup to be truly inspirational. I have met her in person and find her to be incredibly real and authentic. She has given me confidence to go after my dreams and provides a roadmap to turning your fears into accomplishments!
Do It Scared helps you identify your fear archetype, see the positives and negatives of the archetype, and then gives you real life ways to over come that fear, or how to work within that fear. Ruth shares in the book her life as a young adult and her ups and downs. This really helped me to relate to her as a real person and also increase my amazement of how much she has accomplished. And she did it all while scared. "Be clear about your why." This is something I have struggled with but Ruth helps by giving direction on how to find your why, what it feels like when you do, and what to do to continue if you haven't quite found your why. This book is going to help me set goals for both my personal and professional life and also define my WHY. I firmly believe it can help you find your why and achieve you goals too!
Was a boring read with a "just do it attitude". I skipped the first half with the fear types because I didn't care. Then I got to page 140 where she talks about regretting abortion and I had to DNF. That was so insensitive of the author that I will be burning this book this winter.
A few months ago I decided that my life needed a change. I’d been opening boxes on YouTube for a couple of years at that point. What started as a hobby of sorts turned into something that pointed out what was missing. I want to turn my hobby into a way of life. I need a fresh start.
I decided to dream big.
I signed up for Ruth Soukop’s Elite Blogging Academy after doing a bit of research. I like that I can follow the program at my own pace. This is quite important considering how busy I am!
As you can imagine, I started getting emails from EBA encouraging me to stay focused and telling me about various extras I was eligible for. Then one day I got an email telling me that Ruth has a new book scheduled for release on May 20, 2019 and would I like to be part of the Launch Team.
Umm… yes, please!
You know how when something is shiny and new and you’re all about that thing for a while? Well, that’s where I am with Ruth Soukup. I haven’t yet run out to buy all her books, but I’m here to tell you about her NEW book since I was given an advance copy to review.
Basically, Ruth is letting us know that doing new things is scary, but we have to do it anyway. That’s what courage is. It takes me back to that scene in A League of Their Own. You know the one. Jimmy Dugan says, “It’s supposed to be hard. If it wasn’t hard, everyone would do it. The hard … is what makes it great.”
So true!
“Do It Scared” is organized in a way that leads you straight down the path you need to take. Ruth starts by telling us how to recognize our fears. There’s actually a quiz you can take (link in the book) that helps you to identify what’s holding you back. A lot of time is spent on each archetype. From pros to cons, no stone is left unturned.
From there, Ruth helps us fight our fears with courage. HA! Just typing that made me think immediately of the cowardly lion. All these references just keep finding their way to my lil brain! But seriously, that’s the great part about this book for me. She doesn’t just say, “Yeah, so … don’t let those fears get in your way.”
No. She gives us solid, actionable goals: make huge plans, listen to constructive criticism, own up to your mistakes, be grateful for what you have. These are just a couple of examples.
Bottom line. I recommend this book. Whether (like me) you are working toward a huge goal and following your dreams or you are floundering and trying to find a way out of a dark place, this book is for you. Each of us has fears holding us back in one way or another. Do It Scared is structured to help you identify those fears and take back control.
I’d love to get your feedback after you’ve read it!
“If your goal doesn't scare you, it's not big enough.” - Ruth Soukup
Disclaimer: I was given an advance readers copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This in no way affects my opinions of this book.
This book motivates you to just jump in and do that thing you've always wanted to do even if you are scared. Do It Scared is a book that tells you to face your fears and shows you how. Ruth built her business and worked hard to establish it despite all the adversities she faced through life and in this book she motivates you to do the same. Based on research Ruth and her team did, they were able to identify 7 Fear Archetypes. These archetypes detail the main fear that's holding people back from achieving their dreams and they are The Procrastinator, The Rule Follower, The People Pleaser, The Outcast, The Self-Doubter, The Excuse Maker, and The Pessimist. You can take a quiz to find out which one you belong to. In case you are curious, I'm a pessimist. What I loved about this book is that it doesn't just focus on the negative parts of each archetype but also on the good traits that these fears cause us to have. For example, as a pessimist, I'm caring and compassionate but on the negative side, I tend to see any hardship as a stop sign rather than a stepping stone. I know it sounds counterproductive but it works. It teaches you to focus on ridding yourself of the negatives while embracing the positives. Another thing I loved is the use of personas to describe each archetype. Instead of just reading about the archetypes, they are brought to life with fictional characters which make them more relatable. The book is divided into three parts. The first part explains the seven fear archetypes, the second part teaches you how you can overcome your fears with courage and the third part gives you practical actions you can carry out to stop your fears from holding you back. This book will really appeal to women, mostly middle-aged women but I feel anyone can read it and learn a thing or few. I'm glad I read it.
Ruth Soukup is the queen of down-to-earth business (and life) advice! In this book she tackles a topic you don't hear much about: fear. Many of us have fears that hold us back or But not all fears are the same and she breaks it down into seven different types or "archetypes". (There's a free quiz you can take to identify what your dominant types may be) She makes a point that none of these fears are worse than the others. Each one offers some pros and cons. Whether it's being afraid of making a mistake, being afraid of what others will think, fear that you are not enough - she breaks each one of these down and then gives concrete examples of how you can deal with these fears.
The book contains two more sections that deal with the Principles of Courage and Courage in Action. She runs through exercises to make the reader dream big - ignoring our standard self-judgement that would send us toward "safe" goals. We are encouraged to set goals that make us nervous and uncomfortable because this pushes us to exceed. As long as we remember why this goal is important, these are the types of goals that make us want to get out of bed and tackle the day. The books also talks about setting goals and breaking them down into a narrowed focus. My favorite quote is "action is the only antidote to fear"! I love how she gives real-life examples of others that have dealt with various fears and problems reaching their goals.
This book is a must-read for anyone that finds they are not accomplishing the goals they want in life. Perhaps it's fear that is holding you back. Or perhaps you aren't setting goals that really inspire you - that follow your "why". As Ruth states, we need to "change the script" - get rid of those beliefs that are holding us back and limiting our accomplishments!
*I received a copy of this book from the publisher to review. All opinions are my own.*
Have you ever wanted to do something only to second guess yourself? Have you ever wondered what you are capable of doing? Have you ever wondered what prevents you from doing what you truly desire to do? If so this is the book for you. Ruth Soukup does an excellent job of breaking down the archetypes that keep us paralyzed in fear and then gives strategies and suggestions for overcoming those fears.
The first section of the book dives deep into the Seven Archetypes which are: the Procrastinator, The Rule Follower, The People Pleaser, The Outcast, The Self-Doubter, The Excuse Maker, and The Pessimist. She provides both the strengths and weaknesses of each type along with suggested careers for each type.
After helping the reader understand their archetype, she then provides 7 tools and strategies for overcoming your fears and stepping out of your comfort zone. Too many of us get stuck because we are too paralyzed by fear to walk out in faith and challenge the status quo. The second half of this book does an amazing job of helping the reader see how to start moving and face our fears head on.
She writes in an engaging manner that makes you feel as if you were actually sitting down having a conversation with her. This book will help you go from fear to faith and go for the "Big" dreams and desires of your heart. So if you are looking for a book to inspire, motivate, encourage you and more, check out this book for yourself.
I know this book encouraged me to think about who I am, what I am afraid of and what I want from life. With a husband who is about 3 years away from retirement, I have big dreams for our future that I want to see come to life. This book is encouraging me to step out in faith and start working towards the life I want.
