By turns poignant and funny (or both), these are memorable, entertaining, well-written short stories from the small press, Main Street Rag.

While all the stories have extremely well-drawn characters, the character that has gotten under my skin is Mrs. Kobayashi from "The Books of Austen and Bronte" by Christopher Bundy. I have continued to think of her.

I enjoyed every story; only one seemed to go on for a tad bit too long, though it, too, had a great main character, along with an impeccable sense of place, as they all did.

This is the first of 3 fiction anthologies I have edited, and I definitely "earned my stripes" and learned along the way. The theme turned out to be somewhat limited, as I read submission after submission, but I think it made for a stronger anthology in the end. From the US to Asia, these stories about small towns and the quirky people who inhabit them will leave the reader with a unique appreciation for this threatened lifestyle. A collection to enjoy and ponder.
