Ellen hi Michelle!
Thanks so much for your post -- I hadn't realized til now that you were responding to me. :) I totally agree with your perspective, but apparently we are the outliers.

I just started reading Catharine Willis' The Doomsday Book, and so far it's a magnificent example of a strong female character realistically reacting to being thrown back in time to the Middle Ages. Recommend trying it if you haven't, based on the first 1/4 of it.

Cynthia Blumberg Me too! It's not that I am offended by a sex or a torture scene in a novel, but Outlander just comes across as so self-indulgent.

I am not a romance genre fan, though, so it may be that this is a great novel for the crowd who goes in for the modern romance novel.

I prefer historical fiction like Sharon Kay Penman or Bernard Cornwall or Winston Graham. There are romances and relationships in these novels, but they aren't the central plot necessarily.

Sharon I am so offended that anyone would consider this a competitor to "To Kill A Mockingbird" in the Great American Read. Usually, an even keeled, steady person, I have become physically ill trying to get through this garbage. I kept thinking there would be some redeeming value to compensate for the author's thinly veiled attempt to simply make millions off of voluminous amount of filth mixed in with minimal scraps of historical context and even less accuracy. About half-way through now and this ridiculous series of books will go in the garbage where it truly belongs !!! My hope is that the author is NOT so energized by the monetary success, that she will vomit another lengthy, distasteful piece go trash.
